Harper Allen is a Canadian writer of romance novels. She is a four-time nominee for a Career Achievement Award by Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine and her novel Dressed To Slay was named the magazine's choice for Best Silhouette Bombshell of 2006.
Her Irish ancestry lends them a touch of Celtic mysticism, while her work as a reporter in the criminal court system gives her books a darker edge, first and foremost each one is a story about a man and a woman falling in love and holding on to that love. Her characters have always been real people with real flaws, desperately struggling to find the love that will redeem them - and for that Harper need look no further for inspiration than her own life.
Harper grew up in a blue-collar motor city, and with comments such as "Does not play well with others" on her grade-school report cards. Underneath the motorcycle leathers and the rose tattoo, beats the heart of a true romantic. The day she met the man who eventually became her husband, she told her sister, "I've just met the man I'm going to marry. How long do you think it'll take him to figure it out?" They married, and had little kids, who aren't the first ones picked for the volleyball team. Her idea of a great date with her husband is going to a baseball game. Her idea of a great baseball game is any one in which the Red Sox win.
2/5 These are my notes from the day I ended the book in 2013. The story did not catch me. I skimmed through at times. Kat is one of three 21-year old triplets. Prophesy says one will be a vamp hunter, one will be a vamp, and one will die. Kat knows Megan is the hunter. She believes she is to become the vampire. Jack Rawls has come to kill her. But she hasn't become a vamp yet.
When their grandfather Darkheart revealed to the Crosse triplets that they came from a long line of vampire slayers, they were shocked. He also revealed that one of them would become the next slayer, one would heal vampires, and one would turn into a vampire. Kat Crosse was afraid she was going to be the sister who turns into a bloodsucker. And Vampire Hunter Jack Rawls agreed. Kat asks him to help her find Cyrus Kane, the king of the local vamps, hoping she could kill him and stop the prophecy in its tracks.
I didn't like this book as much as the first in the series. Kat is a somewhat unlikeable heroine. She drove me absolutely nuts when she called everybody "Sweetie". (GAG) I did like Jack...just don't know what he saw in Kat. I was a little confused by the last 20 pages of the book. I'm hoping the next book clears it up for me. My rating: 3 Stars.
Adding a review for this as I've rated it without a review.
A lot of things have happened since. 2014 Was a very hard year for myself so all the reviews are showing up on the same date. I can't explain why they are, if the ratings are justice or accurate I can also not say when I truly read these. I'm just going to say 2014 on the same day added just to keep the year right if not the month...
A second of the triplets, Kat, shares her story and her part of the prophecy. I had trouble getting past the whining of the sisters. The story was ok, the "romance" was lame, and my favorite character was the gay guy.
Harper Allen's writing style might be meant to be cool or cute, but I just find the way Kat, the narrator speaks to be cumbersome and uneducated. The over-use of sweetie et al just turns the whole story putrid. I tried, I really tried but I just can't go on with this. The writing is dreadful.
This book was ok, but Im really confused by the fact that all of a sudden Megan was back with Mikhail, with no explanation, maybe I missed something? But at the end of dressed to slay she loved another guy... WTF?
