[Siren Classic Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, spanking, HEA] When the elders’ plan is revealed, Dor Murray grabs the obviously confused and enormous guy next to him, figuring the guy could use some help getting out of there… And he could use a shield. Except UPAC screwed up. Surprise, surprise. They let an elephant into the conference, and of course, that’s who Dor grabbed. Now he’s got a massive, but hot, elephant shifter in musth who’s decided Dor is his. Wyatt is oblivious to everything but the gorgeous man in his arms that he wants to claim. The guards are freaking out and Dor is begging him to run. Trying to save Wyatt from UPAC wasn’t the same as agreeing to be his mate. And now Dor has to handle Wyatt’s aggressive, testosterone-filled musth for the first nine days of their mating. Will Dor ever be able to forgive Wyatt for what he’s done when he wasn’t himself? This book is written in first-person point of view. ** A Siren Erotic Romance
Bringing back ‘What’s going on with this cover?’ to give a shout out to this abomination. What. Is. This?
Is the skunk climbing David Boreanaz‘s head or just lightly caressing him? And what in the dollar store font is this? And the title, a skunk and a trunk? So one of these guys is a skunk and the other an elephant? Or was the skunk locked in the trunk of a car? …so many questions.
Also this is a TWENTY BOOK SERIES with each cover and premise more bonkers than the last.
This was book 20 in the "Midnight Matings" series. Wyatt is a elephant shifter who wasn't invited to the conference, but he went anyway he drank four glasses of the spiked champagne that forced the mating heat. Wyatt was very nervous he is shy and was attracted to the cute shifter that sat and talked to him. Dor Murray is a skunk shifter and a lord of his people he uses Wyatt as a shield when all the shifter's start going crazy with lust. Turns out Wyatt is in musth and he claims Dor for himself. This was a good read that I wanted more of I really liked both of these character's a lot. Wyatt's mother and sister have a problem with him being mated to a man a skunk at that. Wyatt is in musth for eight days and with the help of his two friends Emiel and Gawain Dor is there for me. Both of them have been hurt turns out Wyatt is passive and let's his mother and sister run over him and when these two show up on the day that his musth is over they demand that he end the mating they think that Dor is using him for money. Turns out Dor is a Lord and rich on his own Dor let's his mother and sister know that he is not going anywhere and Wyatt threaten to cut them off if they try anything. Emiel who is also an elephant shifter is dealing with his own crazy family they trying to force him to marry a woman even though he is gay. I liked both of the friends in this book Gawain who is not a elephant shifter and is not passive like Wyatt or Emiel finally told Wyatt what he thought of his mother and sister. When his mother tries to kill Dor Wyatt snapped and did what he had to do to protect his mate. The sex scenes in this book was hot and when Dor did that thing with his gland it was hot. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I wish the author would write about Gawain and Emiel. I am looking forward to reading more of this series. I really like this series.
It's like Joyee Flynn went on a vacation and forgot everything she knew about writing. That, or the editors at Siren have been doing a particularly lousy job.
Sentences are all over the place; some are linked together with conjunctions without commas, so you have to read a sentence twice to get what it means sometimes. The writing's much more meh than the older books, and I can't believe I'm saying this - but the villains are even more 2D.
Also, really? Someone pulled the tusk out of an elephant? With his fucking bare hands? What did they use to stick it, sellotape? There's a reason people kill elephants for ivory, and it's not because it's mighty removable like that.
Disbelief + 500
I'm also not sure why anyone would want to have sex for 3 hours, even if they can, because dick burn? Because chaffing? Because ouch??
I never thought that any of these stories could compare to Scales and a Tail until I read this one.
I mean, who doesn't love the idea of the gentle, sweet, passive elephant (unless he's in mating heat or angry) and the lovable, sarcastic, little skunk? Dor and Wyatt are great together and this is a fun story. Wyatt's mom and sister provide the much needed nasty bitches, and his friends the comic relief. All in all a very good read!
Third reread and still just as much fun! (04/17/2018)
A quick easy read. There really isnt alot of story in these books but a lot of sex. This is the story of Dor, a skunk shifter and Wyatt, an elephant shifter. There is a host of sexondary characters from the delightful gouse ates to the hideous relatives. A pleasant way to spend an hour or two.
Wow. Dor’s remarkably sensible and rational. And not whiny. And actually nice.
Since this series is irrational down to its premise, I don’t expect much in the way of making sense. Still, shouldn’t Dor’s claim that the council left him alone because he was just one small insignificant shifter crumble the second he reveals who he really is? (Which apparently is known to all and sundry, so no use trying to pretend the council would be unaware.) Hm.
But yes, I liked that first half, despite the impossibly rough sexual situation. I’m grateful the author did not attempt to make it seem, er, sexy.
When the viewpoint switches over to Wyatt, well… It’s the usual issue with overly modern speech patterns in one so old. (Dor’s stupidly old too, but relaxed speech fits better with his personality so it wasn’t as disorienting there.) Wyatt’s epiphany about his family and his change of attitude come a little sudden, as well. I’m not convinced this really works. But I can roll with it, if I have to.
Just… Please stop stuffing unnecessary like’s and okay’s into your sentences. No man I know would do that. Certainly none over the age of thirty (and I am being generous here). At the very least I’d imagine that if you’re old enough to have crossed the century marker (nevermind millennium) you just don’t affect modern valley girl speech. (Jeez. I feel stupid even putting it like this.) It’s particularly odd when contrasted with the unusual amounts of speechifying in this book.
The love? Well, it happens a bit fast. Again, nothing unexpected with this series. I don’t mind it so much here because the guys are kind of cute together.
Then, blah. That mini-fight is ridiculous. Luckily it’s also brief. Although the D/s thing? Uh. I wish it went out of fashion again and only people who can handle the subject did so. *shrug* Here it managed to be kinda-sorta cute as the game it was. Really more role-playing than anything else. I won’t even address the super-magical and utterly convenient special powers Dor has for sex or why the hell he does not employ them in the beginning when it would have helped him prevent injuries. Nope, not gonna mention that.
In closing? Yeah, for some reason I had fun with this one. Likeable characters (Dor particularly), silly plot, mushy lovey-dovey interactions, bloody vengeance. The ending felt weak. On the whole, though, it definitely wasn’t one of the worst books among this bunch or by this author.
This is definitely one of the more interesting pairings I have come across. An elephant, who is all peaceful until angered, and a skunk, who is a scavenger and used to fighting for himself, make a fascinating couple. Add some of the most typical elements of how elephants live (such as the matriarchal nature of their society, and the bachelors going off to live outside the herd) and translate to humans, or, well, shifters, and you have the background for a very volatile situation.
Wyatt is an elephant shifter. He is very intelligent, hates confrontation, and will fight like a berserker if provoked and to defend what is his. He is also very loving, and even though his family (mother and sister) are trying to terrorize him into sending Dor away, he will not budge on this. he even learns how to deal with confrontations. Good for him!
Dor is a skunk shifter. He is physically smaller, mentally agile, and will stand up for himself before he even gets up in the morning. I loved how devoted he was to taking care of Wyatt, once he understood the situation, and could see how much potential they had as a couple. The little "surprise" he comes up with as to who he really is once pushed into a corner... I loved that. Very well played.
If you like shifters who have to overcome some physical and psychological obstacles before they know how to live together, if you enjoy mates who are very protective of each other, each in their own way, and if you liked the other books in this series, you will probably enjoy this book as well.
I've always said I liked a book in which the MC's undergo some sort of change because of love and this one did have that in it. Dor's spunkiness was something I really respected especially when it came to dealing with Wyatt's evil witch of a mother and sister. I also liked that Dor stood by his mate(who he didn't really get to know until a week after their mating) even though he was exhausted and bruised. Wyatt turned out to be a bit dorky, which I found to be quite endearing and I liked that he was caring and worried about what was best for Dor.
There was one part of the book that I found a bit dumb. The part I'm talking about is the final showdown between Dor and Wyatt's family. I thought
I'm hoping Joyee plans to write a story for both Gawain and Emiel. They both seemed like interesting characters.
LOVE THIS SERIES! We waited soo long for this one I hope we dont have to wait that long for the next one! P.s. All I can say is: Three Hour Sex Scene! Re read Nov 2015 and I still love it !
***zaterdag 27 augustus 2022*** I know I've read this series before because once upon a time I was on binge and read almost everything by these authors. Like everything.
But I also didn't logged it back then and that is bugging me now so I'm adding them based on the one review I did wrote:Fur And Flightless by Joyee Flynn
The premise of this series is so silly I shouldn’t enjoy them but I do. This one was typical, with the desperate forced mating at the beginning and our MCs trying to hide. There was a little dubcon there but not too bad.
There was, of course, instalove. There was also drama and danger and angst and near death and all those things that make me love this series. It’s kind of like my guilty pleasure.
Everyone in the story is male except the evil mother and sister. The other women mentioned were all awful, too. It was so sexist I’m disgusted. But all of the books in this series are that way. That’s another reason it’s a very guilty pleasure. I will continue to read them, too. Bad Kelly.
This book was light and easy to understand. The plot was very simple about big male elephant shifter was very sweet toward his skunk mate. The enemies were only his mother and sister. So no too much drama
As with any long running series, after awhile its a different animal but basically the same thing.. I felt this was not one of them in this case. First of all, elephant shifter, aggressive in musth (new term.. didn't like the name) but mostly pushover any other time hooking up with a small skunk shifter. While the size difference in groin area was something to be concerned about they work it out. Not totally convincing to me seeing as at the beginning Dor is begging Wyatt not to shove the whole thing in cus it won't fit but then later they manage to resolve that issue? And Wyatt's family? Getting mated gave him some balls back to tell them off and change the locks. Though his mother being the main bad guy to overcome was different, it lacked enough...flare?.. to completely pull it off.
All in all, better than average as of late for this series. Would like some more baby stories thou :)
Such a fun series! There are currently 20 books in the series, each book is written by either Joyee Flynn, Gabrielle Evans or Stormy Glenn. They could keep writing more as long as they continue creating interesting characters who shift into all kinds of wonderful and different animals/mythical beings and coming up with unique stories full of romance, crazy drama, angst and let's not forget the very hot sex!
You don't have to read them in order, very rarely are other characters mentioned, but each story is very different and engaging and together they make for a fun few weeks of entertainment.
There is a spin-off series by Joyee Flynn with 8 books out so far called "Unmated by Midnight." I have not read those yet but they are on my to-be-read list next.
Surprisingly not bad. I mean, it's not exactly a masterpiece. These books are pretty formulaic and always follow the same directives but, sometimes, you notice the story you're reading was actually thought through and well written. This was such a case. It's still not great. It's overly simplistic, dramatic and just plain clichéd. But the characters were actually sweet and well put together. They didn't annoy me at all and that's quite an accomplishment with these books. Also liked the support characters a lot. Probably still not ready to recommend this to anyone or even admit I read them but...I was entertained for sure.

This was the latest book that I've read from Ms. Flynn and surprisingly I liked it very much. I say surprisingly, because lately this authors writing has been less than stellar. In spite of the often cheesy dialogue, Dor and Wyatt's story I found sweet, funny and believable in the realm of shifter stories. Both characters handled the relationship as adults, genuinely interested in making the other happy. Dor handled Wyatt's overbearing family without being catty or bratty, or whiny. The climax was, in my opinion rushed through, but overall the story was enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I could've done without some of the sex, but it wasn't bad lol. Their relationship was so sweet and loving. It gave me a cheek ache from smiling. Excellent addition to the series.
I've been really enjoying this series but this was a rather sucky one to end with. I've not bitched about the insta love in these but this one just takes the piss. That Dor had been fucking Wyatt who was mentally an animal for 8 days and still fell in love with him. Nope, not having it.
Any book that has the main character shift into an elephant and kill his own mother by tossing her & then stepping on her deserves 4 stars! This was one of my fav's in the series actually.
