“Show yourself, or I shall remove your hood after I’ve removed your head,” he hissed toward the black cloaked figure standing before him. With its dark hood hanging low and hands locked together between loosely hanging sleeves, its shoulders began to shake with low, rumbling laughter. Jagged lighting forked across the sky as the rain intensified. Large drops of water sizzled against Eric’s sword as he held it out wide, waiting for his answer. Eric’s threat had been no threat at all, and he didn’t plan to wait much longer.
“Who am I?” came a shrill hiss that didn’t match its low booming laugh at all. “Why, don’t you recognize me? After all, our hearts beat as one...Eric Aethello.”
“I will not ask you again,” Eric growled, pointing his sword toward the dark specter. Flames pulsed angrily across his blade. Raindrops sizzled into nothing before ever touching the flame as Spark pleaded, begged, to be fed.
“Oh, but I’ve already answered you...Gate Keeper. Is that not what they call you? Is that not the lie you’ve been told by so many?” Eric slowly lowered his sword, keeping his eyes glued to this specter. “Do you still not know who I am? Then perhaps your eyes will see the truth where ears have failed to hear it.”
Jeff Gunzel grew up in Chicago Illinois. Even though he now lives in Westminster Colorado, "Da Bears" will always be a part of his soul! He eventually graduated from Devry University with an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics & Computer Technology. But his first love will always be writing fantasy novels. You can blame that on years and years of playing Dungeons & Dragons.

I dread doing reviews. I just don't know what to say. I wish I could just say good, bad, or awesome and oh that is exactly what I do. Seriously this series is great and it just gets better and better. Thank you for your stories, please keep them coming. ☆☆☆☆☆
Who is Kelus? Everyone loves a cliffhanger! Relationships are developing nicely, and there are many new adventures on a distant shore. I'm jealous of Eric's new pet.
once again, another story that I really liked. our heroes travel from Tramerria to an island far away. the island is suppose to be where the evil persona will attempt to crossover to this earthly plane with the intent of killing all humankind. the heroes are tasked with stopping him. the sea travel does not go as expected. they are all separated and must survive the best they can. Eric is captured by a giant bird lizard as food for her baby, Addel is physically transforming into something other than human, Jacob is trying to help her maintain her humanity and Jade is captured by local villagers and becomes a slave to Nima (one of the leaders and prodigy in the village). none of this is as threatening as what else lives on this island: the rolling death of the "bouchards" and the crazy-sadistic-demoni- humans Zhou and his sister Marita; these two consider themselves the ultimate power and rulers of this island. they take great pleasure in cruelty, torture and killing. our heroes are their next target. will the heroes be able to regroup in time to save one another and fight the evil that's coming? this book, like the others, is not well edited. but better than the first. the lack of editing did not bother me because I like the series that much! good read for older teens and adults. note to author- the cover and title is a little confusing as there isn't anything about any lost empire throughout the whole book. I guess the implication is the island they're on is the lost empire. perhaps it would have been better to have this title and cover for the next book in the series. I do love the cover. I think a good cover will draw readers in but it's storylines and good editing that keeps them. next time, spend the money on an editor rather than a graphic artist.
Eric has a mission, so along with Jade, Jacob and Athel, he embarks into a journey of discovery, not only about his feelings for Jade and his friends but also what it means to be Gate Keeper.
New enemies, new friends and new lands to explore. Full of mystery and suspense and wonder - perfect fantasy. Fabulous characters, descriptions, plot and battle scenes, alongside magic, myth and wonderful sense of place make this a highly recommended series.
OMG! why can't it be just one book? but even then I will want more from this writer. The characters are beautifully written you don't know what's next but when it comes you think yea that so perfect. I want to know what happens with Jason. I'm most definitely getting book 4.
Mr. Gunsel's novels are seemingly growing shorter each time I read one. Furthermore, I'm noticing an increasing number of typos. This saddens me as I think if the books were joined into one, it would be a fabulous novel.
A little slower to start than the other books but the excitement picks up to an AWESOME climax. Again no disappointment. I'm ready to read the next one!
