When one has lived with chronic illness for over a decade, and especially when one does not really relish the thought of any more medical testing, offers of drugs or surgeries, or being labelled as a 'mystery case,' one goes health sleuthing.

This time, I think I came up with something valuable.

Whether or not 'adrenal fatigue syndrome' is real (both regular and functional MDs dispute that), the physiological effects seem to be. Dr. Lam's approach--emphasizing the need to go slow, to be gentle, to look at all aspects of one's life, and to avoid worsening the situation--is valuable advice in many health quandaries.

If you are labelled a 'mystery case' by doctors, are often tired, and understand what it means to 'crash,' you may have adrenal fatigue, whether as part of another disease or on its own. Dr. Lam discusses symptoms, causes, and more in careful detail.

This book may give you helpful advice on topics from food and activity to pharmaceuticals and breathing, as well as the permission to rest.

Although the book is a bit scattered and repetitive, it can be a life-changer. Note that the book emphasizes the idea that for severe adrenal fatigue (if you have it, you will recognize yourself immediately) personalized help may be necessary, and the Lams have a coaching service to provide this.

If you follow the advice in the book, which will require rereading and studying, you will at least be able to implement some of its suggestions to your benefit without accessing the coaching service. There is also a searchable website that answers questions not in the book:

Great information, useful for AFS sufferers as well as practitioners.
Shed light about healing from crashes, as well as reasons for paradoxical reactions to treatment.

I personally disagree with certain recommendations, but resonate with the general theme that each individual is different and requires a personalized therapeutic approach.

Read it, it’s worth your time.

I didn't find this book as helpful for me as was the book Adrenal Fatigue and Central Nervous System disruptions. It gave general dietary recommendations and exercises, but it was too detailed in the beginning of the book. It was interesting, but not for my situation.

At first I really liked the book. However, at some point I got frustrated with the amount of extra verbiage. The book is too thick with non-essential information to be useful to me. Don't get me wrong, there is a great deal of useful information here, it is just buried.
