S.K. Whiteside is a reader, writer, and lover of all things dark and mysterious. She is a Mythic Fiction writer of Contemporary Urban & Historical Fantasy and most of her stories have a background in Egyptian Mythology with a modern day adaptation and unique twist. As an author her art of "teasing" is precise and her character interaction draws you in and makes the story play out like a movie in your mind. This is a talent that now all authors have, nor will they ever have.
Her debut story, "Fallen", was released in part March 2012 as a teaser to "Morbid Seraphic" her annual anthology with Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly Publishing. Even though it was only part of the story "Fallen" reached Top Ten status on Amazon sparking interest in Morbid Seraphic which later reached #1 in Amazon for Anthologies. Her follow up short story release "VEXED" was released November 2012. "VEXED" has and continues to be an Amazon Top 100 best selling paid Kindle release in three different countries. It served as the prequel to her debut full novel release "Inheritance". "Inheritance" was released June 1, 2013 and within the first week became an Amazon Top 100 best selling Kindle release in three countries simultaneously and going as high as #2 in Canada for two weeks straight. To date (June 25, 2013) Inheritance (as well as Vexed) maintains Top 100 status in at least two countries each between Canada, Spain, The United Kingdom, and the US interchangeably. While her eBooks are presently only available in Kindle her paperbacks are available worldwide.
When she is not writing S.K. Whiteside is a full time Mental Health Therapist. She began writing in Academia but decided that writing about things on the "other side of the veil" was a lot more interesting. Living in the paranormal capital of the world makes it fairly easy for her to come up with characters, many of which are based on of real personas in her life that can't help but carry over into her writing.
Upcoming Releases: "Thicker Than Water" (A Psychological Thriller), and Blood Born, the growing anticipated follow up to Inheritance.
This books starts off with a girl named Tari and her Grandpe,’ or grandpa, packing up to go to an old folks home. The old man and her have a cute relationship, and I really enjoyed the cheeky banter back and forth. I liked how the old man dragged his favorite, old chair with him to his new place. Tari works at a shop where this girl who’s kind of strange gives her this weird pouch full of herbs to help her sleep. When she falls asleep she enters a whole new place. Unsure if it’s a dream or reality Tari is brought to Egypt where a scene unfolds in front of her eyes of two women. Tari is forbidden by her grandpe’ to go into the attic but when something happens she has to break his wishes. She discovers a letter and a stone that has more information about who she truly is.
I thought this book was good. I loved the relationship the girl had with her grandpa and like I said I loved their banter back and forth. It had good characters and some interesting stuff! The reason why I give a four star is pretty much I got lost. When Tari went to Eygpt in her spirit walk it completely lost me. The whole scene made me squint in frustration because I felt like I didn't know what was going on. The author must have did some research, and it kind of feels like she just says a bunch of info. It wasn't enough for me to not like it or anything. It just confused me a bit. A little bit of advice I’d also give the author is lose the hyphens in the book. I think she’s meaning to do dashes, but there are a lot of hyphens. If they are supposed to be dashes I would reduce them greatly. Where dashes are alright, I got a bit annoyed by them all over the place. I thought this book was really good though! Especially if you need a fast read!
Scribe starts off slow, and as it picks up it really sets its own pace. It’s a comfortable read and I really found it enjoyable. I found the dialog and relationships sharp, well defined, and vividly real.
Example: ________________
“It’s like you are oozing magic.”
Tari rolled her eyes. “Yes I am an all-powerful witch,” she said sarcastically.
“No. Not a witch, but something. I can’t explain it. It’s as if magic is your friend,” Ivy continued. She was staring at Tari but not at her. Tari was getting ready to ask her if she was ok when the door to the store chimed warning of a customer’s arrival.
“And apparently Vodka is your friend. You may want to lay off the alcohol home girl,” she ended the conversation to go help the new arrival. ________________
Just perfect. I mean... perfect.
I’m never one to give plot spoilers, and that’s not about to change now, but… the “Spirit Walk” was awesome. Just awesome.
If you are looking for a good short read with a lot of punch, and richly built world with inexplicably deep characters… and a bit of the “magical” about it… Scribe is definitely a good fit for you.
Upon realizing it was a short story I was worried that it would be all action and not give us enough time to get back-story.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had excellent pacing and was never boring. The characters are relatable and well rounded. Excited to read the next installment but brace your selves, the story is addicting and ends with a cliffhanger!
This is a brilliant short that serves as an introduction to the story or plot line! It introduces 4 characters, twomoain protagonists and sets the story in the past -- ancient Egypt and the present -- New Orleans!
This is like a taster at a whine show! Nothing this good can be spit out! But dont take my word for it. Get a copy and read it for yourself!
Scribe is a very powerful introduction to the descendants of the Scribe featured in Vexed. Some of the text from Vexed is included in Scribe and there is absolutely no mistaking that the two short stories are part of one another.
Tari is a snarky character that also has a softer side when dealing with the last relative she has; her grandfather. She has reservations about placing him the Assisted Living Center but knows that this place is what's best for both of them. Only, he leaves cryptic messages regarding items in the attic and then mysteriously comes to her in a dream the same night that he's placed in the home. What follows is nothing short of sad...
...and includes a little bit of intrigue.
Guided by the nurse, Tari is forced to go into the attic to obtain any, and all of grandpa's official documents. That way, when the day comes, Tari is ready and won't have to search while in a much larger state of grief.
Tari wasn't expecting to find a note from her mother explaining her past and what that means for Tari's future.
The short story had a nice pace to it. The building up of this particular part of the Guardian world was done well and we learn a lot about Tari in a very short time. The story ends with a cliffhanger and I can't wait until the next story comes out in this series line.

It's a good story that I wish would have been a little longer, I think it took me about half an hour to read the whole thing. If you're looking for an extremely quick read this book will do the trick quite nicely. I felt the story flowed well and was pretty engaging.
