Honeymoon for One

Rate this book
There are worse things in life than getting dumped at the altar. Like being accused of killing your fake husband in a third world country where you can't speak the language, for example.

When Lizzie Mancini booked her honeymoon to the secluded Blue Bay Beach Resort on the small Caribbean island of Camus Caye she thought it would be relaxing to spend the week at an isolated couples-only retreat. But that was before she knew she’d be honeymooning sans groom. Touring alone, dining alone, and worst of all, having to explain to the resort’s thirty other guests why she was staying in the bridal suite alone—Lizzie was dreading it. But it still beat the alternative, eight more days hibernating in her empty apartment feeling sorry for herself.

Then Lizzie meets Michael, a gold-chained antiquities dealer who offers to play her husband for the week no strings (or sex) attached. The plan works perfectly until Lizzie spends the night with scuba instructor Jack, and Michael’s body washes up on Blue Bay’s pristine shore. Lizzie quickly becomes Polizia Nationale’s number one suspect and the only way she can prove her innocence is to solve Michael’s murder herself.

For me this book is a great idea which didn't quite translate to the page as well as it should have. Lizzie goes to a couples only resort with a fake husband and then is accused of his subsequent murder. She's thrown into a cell, she escapes, finds a turtle, and goes on the lam.

There are some really great comic moments in this book, but it never really captured my imagination. I didn't like the hero, he was a complete ass-hat. To be honest all the men in this book are brainless idiots. The heroine was a bit quirky, which works for me, but to be honest I found her best friend more interesting.

2.5 stars. I picked this to read because I needed something that was mindless and fun. Unfortunately Honeymoon for One was a little too mindless. The protagonist and her best friend were just so dumb at times. Lizzie didn't seem to have much backbone. She did whatever everyone else pressured her to do, except when they were actually giving her good advice and that didn't happen too often.

I made it about a quarter of the way through this book and I'm telling you, it's hard. It's actually really funny and light. My problem is the main character. I have a hard time wanting to read about an adult making so many stupid mistakes...over and over again. If I were her friend, I would want to shake some sense into her. Hasn't she learned anything in life? Doesn't she know what could happen? Doesn't she have a built is you-know-what meter? Obviously not, or we wouldn't be reading her cringe-worthy, but kind of funny story. Mine was blaring the entire time. And I didn't like her basically locking on one man that she was determined to have. Didn't she have morals? Cute guy at honeymoon resort? She didn't think he'd seen her "type" many times before? She needed to call her friend and get a lesson on self respect.

I'm not sure if I'll finish it or not. I'm thinking I will because it was funny (chick-lit) but not right now.

There were some funny moments in this book, but the heroine and I didn't get a long. She was silly - I like silly, but I also like a heroine to be smart. She had very dumb moments, to get a laugh...that didn't work for me.

I also didn't love that she was left at the alter and a few days later is lusting after a beach boy.

Jane, her best friend is a great character that I enjoyed. Stopped reading around 60%...just wasn't for me.

I liked the way it was written. opening in the middle of the story, the first half is retrospective and the second half details how she gets out of her predicament. it was a bit confusing and by the tine I got to the bed, I didn't really care who killed Michael, I finished it last night and I know I read who killed him but couldn't tell you. to be honest, I can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to go for this in the first place,

Hmm. I could have sworn I'd read something else by this author, but nothing's showing up as read. Odd, that. And after this one here, I find it likely that I probably won't be trying another. Well no matter - my fifteenth Chick Lit book, and first by this author. Previous chick lit book review says that one is the 13th and the ones before that seem to line up. But this is the 15th one I've marked read. Not sure where the miscounting started.

From start to finish, I couldn't stand Lizzie Mancini. Not only super naive, and gullible, she also seemed to make the stupid decision almost every single chance she could. She didn't necessarily come off as stupid. No, more like she just didn't actively use her brain when it came time to actually make decisions. I'm probably the last person to say this but . . . she really is the kind of woman who needs someone next to her guiding her through life. Because, as I said, she's a bloody stupid decision maker.

Granted, I already knew this going in. That she was naive, stupid decision maker, etc. My eyes were open. I expected someone like that. I just also expected other things. Like, say, humor. Or, at the very least, romance. Sure, Lizzie was panting to fuck everyone around her, but that's not exactly the same thing as romance now is it (also, panting for, is not the same as actually doing)?

So. Her fiancé breaks off their wedding the night before (I think I recall it was the night before). So, she goes on her trip by herself. Because, gosh darn it, she did a ton of research and she just deserves to go. Not completely an out of the norm type response. I'm sure many go on the vacation anyway. But, even putting that down as a - maybe not stupid, maybe not naive, it still lead to everything else.

Being friendly with a man she just meets at the airport. A man she had no attraction to at all. Who she allowed to pick up her bag, and rolled her eyes at her friend when her friend reminded her not to allow that (you know, that 'not allowing strangers to touch your bags' thing). Apparently she can't say no. She's friendly, can't really fault her for that. She's a little too naive and gullible to be so open, or to allow herself to be so open, but can't fault her for being friendly. But. Even though they didn't have seats together on the plane, they end up sitting next to each other. Even though she wanted the empty row. And sleep. But no.

Then she agrees with him, this super creepy stranger, who gives off vibes of being a criminal to her friend Jane, to pretend to be a married couple at a resort. Because it'd just be couples there. You know what I noticed? No one would have given a fuck if she had just gone by herself and admitted everything (dumped, etc.). But, meh.

Then she meets some guy named Jack. The 'scuba boy'. Who she promptly thrusts herself at. And moons over. Good god, didn't she just have her heart broken? Oh, wait, 'fuck it out of her system, like men do'. Right, sorry.

Then there's Jane. I figured she was the smart one, what with her watching out for her friend at the airport. Almost successfully cock-blocking that 'drug dealer looking guy', and keeping him off of her bag. She made some other relatively smart comments near the beginning of the book. But every comment, thought, action, after that was down-right on the level of her friend Lizzie. Heck, occasionally she led Lizzie into stupid situations.

Now all of that could have been hilarious. I mean, there seems to have been the potential here for hilarity, action, and mystery. But . . .. The plot, despite being lead around by someone making stupid decisions, was coherent enough. The writing wasn't that bad. But every character annoyed me greatly. There was no humor. There was no romance, just a constant lust for a one night stand.

This was not a romance. This was not comical series of funny bad decisions. This was just tedious. To a certain extent, going in the way I did, I kind of expected a Lucy Ricardo bouncing around from one bad decision to another while creating much laughter and humor along the way to finding her Ricky. That'd have been great. Wasn't that either.

There were some vaguely cute moments with Fred the turtle, but that was basically that. Considering that the little helpful tip says that 2 stars means 'okay', there's no way I can mark this book as okay. So I'm actually breaking out a brand new shelf just for this book (and, well, any others that might fit later) - the 1.5 star shelf.

As I have stated previously, I am on a mission to travel the world via books & movies this year. Belize is one of my favorite countries so when I stumbled upon this book I figured I would give it ago. Even though she was accused of murder and the story gets a little crazy this book is making me itch to get back to Belize.

The second reason this book sucked me? That cover. I would much rather be doing that than working claims. Just Saying.

The brief synopsis Lizzie was left at the alter but instead of tucking her tail between her legs like most would do she took off and went on her honeymoon alone. She meets Michael who offers to play "pretend husband" and well when he ends up murdered well that is when the shenanigans begin.

As this is a country I have been to it was nice to hear how the main character wanted to go diving, snorkling and cave tubbing... all things that are worthy of doing in Belize. This is a reason why I love reading books set in a location I want to visit.

I found Liz very refreshing she may be a little naive but at the same time I can't blame her for wanting to have a person play husband at a "couples resort" that plan goes awry when she meets Jack, the hot scuba instructor.

Scandalous you say? Oh that is just the beginning.

Without a doubt I loved this book, I devoured the book in a day. It had a little mystery, a little steam and whole lotta fun. This book was one plot after another

and oh there is a sea turtle named Fred. We all know how I love sea turtles.

The characters were lovable and relatively believable. Where is my trust fund friend though?

Go read this book, really go read this book if you are going to Belize, even though she was in a Belizean jail for a bit you will still be excited about visiting this very beautiful country.

I recommend this book if you want fast fun read, and in the mood to travel to Belize :)

After a five-year relationship and living together for two, Lizzy's fiancé decides to wait until the night before the wedding to tell her he's not the marrying kind. It had taken her weeks of research to find the best place to take their honeymoon. To drown her sorrow she decides she's still going to go and hopefully find herself an exciting one or two night-stand.

But it's going to be awkward being the only single at the couples-only resort. So how incredible that a guy she meets in the airport, going to Belize for business, offers to be her stand-in husband for dinners and sight-seeing, even while staying at a separate hotel. At least until he's killed. The trip kind of goes downhill from there.

Yes, there are lots of red flags (as well as disaster sirens) that should have been noticed by Lizzy when it comes to the things Michael does, but that's part of the story's charm. Add to it a very rich, phobia and conspiracy theory-ridden best friend, a sexy scuba diver/marine biologist, lots of potential suspects as well as motives for his death, an escape from her cleaning-closet jail cell and the need to find whodunit while hiding out, and you've got a humorous chic lit/mystery/romance.

Well after midnight with eyes so blurred it was difficult to read, I had to finish in one sitting what was perhaps the most enjoyable read I've had this summer. The story grabbed me from the first page with its very likable characters, the situations they find themselves in, and not knowing who the bad guy is because there are just so many to choose from. And it seems that no one is quite what you think they are. This is a great book to escape in for a mini-vacation or to take to the beach.

My only complaint is that the main character made a lot of stupid choices and didn't seem very concerned about things which should have set off alarm bells. I know that without her carelessness, there wouldn't have been a story but I still found them really frustrating. Fortunately, they were mainly confined to the beginning.

Apart from that, I really enjoyed it. It was a well written, amusing and entertaining chick-lit cozy mystery with a good plot despite Lizzie's foolishness - or possibly because of her foolishness.

Follow the rules!!!

This story is the exact reason why you should follow the rules at the airport. Don't talk to strange people, and don't leave your luggage unattended. I guess it was good that the main character was gullible or there would be no story. It was annoying to watch her struggle to prove her innocence, but also entertaining.

Hmmm, not sure what to say about this one, on a positive note it was an audiobook and I listened to the end of the book. The storyline was ok but it lacked something and for the life of me I can't think what. Hmmm.......!

Wonderful

It's been so long since I've read a such a fun book. I wish I had more time to elaborate. It's a murder mystery gone completely askew. I didn't read the reviews before getting this book. In so many ways, that made this book even better. I had no idea what to expect. Every bit of the book was a complete surprise. A wonderful getaway and a great summer read. I'll be looking for more books by Beth Orsoff. Bravo!

Honeymoon for One by Beth Orsoff and narrated by Emily Beresford
audiobook review

Synopsis

Freelance journalist Lizzie Mancini was looking forward to her honeymoon at the Blue Bay Beach Resort, but sadly her fiancé broke off their wedding plans the day before. Angry and confused she decides to go on her holiday anyway and along the way meets Michael Garcia, a handsome antique dealer (or so he says). On the plane they decide to pretend to be a married couple (no strings or sex attached) for the sake of appearances as they both have a need to appear to be in a couple.

Unfortunately after a few days of role playing Michael is found murdered and Lizzie, his Mrs, is their first and only suspect. She scrambles to clear her name and battles international intrigue and unexpected romance as she looks for the truth.

Honeymoon for One by Beth Orsoff

Review

I instantly loved the voice and annotation of the narrator, Emily Beresford, as she drew me into the story. Beth Orsoff has written an intriguing and exciting novel. I usually like my stories a lot spicier and this is not that type of story, but I found I couldn't stop listening. I just had to find out what would happen next.

Initially I thought it would be a very predictable plot, and some parts were, but I soon found that the twists and turns and unexpected events kept me wondering what Lizzie's next step would be. For instance, in todays' travel world you don't let a stranger carry your bag for you, no matter how handsome. You don't give that same stranger a key to your room while pretending to be married (he was staying at another hotel because of the no strings, no sex rule).

However, Lizzie gave him all this access and then wondered why she ended up as a murder suspect. However, even though I wouldn't be that trusting in real life, this isn't real life. It's a story and a very entertaining one too.

The conversations flowed easily and I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to listen to, entertaining and intriguing.

Unlike some people it seems, I can kind of see some women being taken in by and trusting perfect strangers they meet at airports who seem really friendly and genuine. The fact is that is does happen all the time, whether it is something small like watching their luggage/allowing them to carry yours, to agreeing to knowingly transport drugs for the right price in an ill-judged snap-second decision. Or, perhaps less frequently, a scenario like this where two people agree to pose as one another's partner/associate for whatever reasons that benefit both parties. So the plot was interesting to me, because I can see someone managing to get herself in this amount of hot water. Unfortunately, I was disappointed about how the author had her go about solving her problems - introduce a rich best friend to throw money at them. Of course. You know, it really would be original if people were to start writing stories about normal people and how they go about dealing with things other than through using unlimited funds. So that was disappointing to me. Plus that the rich-best-friend's character was annoying and contradictory (I could have sworn her prim-and-proper image actually extended to mention of wearing twin-sets at one point, but then suddenly she's some gorgeous bombshell who has all the guys drooling!) Add to that the frequent near-misses/brushes with death etc and yes I do agree that on the whole it was pretty unrealistic. But it was still fun and entertaining enough with all its twists and turns to be enjoyed as a light read, perhaps as a beach read. There may be some sort of perverse pleasure to be had in reading about a holiday-gone-horribly-horribly-wrong as you are smugly relaxing on a perfect one yourself!

Every Bride's Nightmare

What do you get when you combine a dumped-at-the-altar bride-to-be, determined to take her dream honeymoon, an airplane seat mate eager to pose as her husband at the couples resort, a hunky Brad Pitt lookalike who inspires instant lust, and a foreign country where said bride can't speak the language?

You get Honeymoon for One, a delightful blend of mystery, humor, and BFF relationships with a dash of romance tossed in for good measure. This droll mystery, highlighted by a series of unexpected events that complicate an already complicated situation, will keep you turning the pages and smiling.

Maybe it was the tropical setting or the wacky characters. but the book was reminiscent of a Carl Hiassen novel, albeit a kinder, gentler Hiassen book.

The protagonist Lizzie Mancini, the hapless bride-to-be who finds herself un-engaged the night before the wedding, and her best friend Jane Chandler will delight you. I suspect that there's a little Lizzie in all of us.

As for BFF Jane, with her hilarious phobias and a trust fund that enables her to outfit both of them like a covert ops team, well, Jane is an original, and she's laugh out loud funny. We all need a BFF like Jane in our lives.

Going on your honeymoon alone to a foreign vacation spot can be deadly. Lizzie just wanted to veg out and maybe have a couple of one night stands to forget her ex-fiance, however a meetup at the airport with a determined to Michael Garcia, who insists upon insinuating himself into her plans should have been a red flag. After agreeing to let him pretend to be her husband with stipulations, Lizzie breezily attempts to carry out her plans, however when Micheal's body turns up on the beach, fingers start to point to Lizzie as his killer. With a web of lies that had been spun early on Lizzie can't seem to extract herself. Enters her trust fund best friend Jane to the rescue. There were several LOL moments in this fun, interesting, romp as the two of them try to keep Lizzie out of prison in Belize.
I enjoyed this story, there were a couple of unexpected twists, trying to figure out who killed Micheal, who had the "Head", and who could they really trust, as it seemed everyone was into something illegal

I love the characters, especially between Lizzie and Jane...what friends won't do for one another at times! :) The story line was well written, just seemed a bit far-fetched. I don't know of too many women that would meet a guy in the airport and decide to allow him to become her 'fake' husband because she was basically left at the alter by her fiance, and then go to another country for a vacation! It was a good adventure to read though, a diving guy that Lizzie falls for and then she is trying to ditch the 'fake' husband, whom ends up dead, meets another couple and comes to find out that they are undercover, some interesting law enforcement that they have on the island, etc...and then there is Jane, the prima donna that lives on her trust fund that comes to Lizzie's rescue! a great beach read!

Poor Lizzie! She really didn't ask for much, but making one bad decision after another landed in the middle of a huge mess! Things just went totally out of control. Her story drew me in and kept me reading late into the night/early morning wanting to see what would go wrong next.

Lizzie's rich BFF, Jane, was a hoot! Everyone needs a friend like her. Beth has written a wonderfully entertaining story that is full of mystery and conspiracy theories. One of my favorite characters was Fred! Who doesn't love turtles? There wasn't a lot of romance in this story, but I loved Jack! I really liked the part he played in the story; he really wasn't a rebound guy or a one night stand. In my mind they will always be together visiting Fred at the aquarium. :)

Fun cozy mystery. Breezy as...well, the tropical breezes that blow through the heroine's honeymoon for one in Belize. After she's dumped by her fiance the day before the wedding, Lizzie decides not to forfeit the vacation. So instead of a hot, naked body next to her in bed, she's left explaining to authorities about the dead body of the man who was pretending to be her husband so she wouldn't be the only single at a couples resort. Enter sexy marine biologist, Jack, and best friend Jane, who flies in to lend moral support and muscle in the form of an emory board to help her break loose from behind bars. I enjoyed the author's style and the action never flagged. A light read to be sure, but late at night that's all I'm up for, so it was just the ticket.

SERIOUSLY, LIZZIE?,
When LA journalist, Lizzie Mancini's wedding is suddenly cancelled, she decides to take her carefully planned honeymoon to Camus Caye anyway. Her adventures start at the airport bar when she befriends a gold chain wearing antiquities dealer. This starts a series of unfortunate events, which had me wanting to slap Lizzie (often). SERIOUSLY, LIZZIE? Once I got past my urges to smack a purely fictional character and went with the story, I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful novel. Beth Orsoff's style is both entertaining and charming. Her characters were well fleshed (even Fred the turtle, who I am now wanting as a pet) and the plot held many a surprise. A fun read!

Picked this up as a fun easy read. It was funny and enjoyable. Once the plot was revealed it was over pretty quickly which I really liked. No need to explain anything and drag it on.

Really liked the characters, comical and engaging.

The substance to it wasn't rivetting and mind boggling, so that's why I have awarded it 3 stars. Easy read, would recommend to anyone looking to real something relaxing and fun.

I'd compare this to stories by Stephanie Bond, I thought they were pretty similar and both left me with the same taste in my mouth, easy and funny.

Loved it, so funny

An exotic locale, a murder and a best friend to the rescue, what more could a book need? After being jilted the day before her wedding, Lizzie plans to go on her honeymoon to Belize without a groom. An unexpected encounter at the airport leads to a "husband for the trip" unfortunately her groom ends up dead and and Lizzie is the only suspect in sight. Lizzie'sI best friend and huge Law and Order fan arrives to save the day, but her well meaning meddling leads to complications and confusion. I laughed out loud as I read this book.
