League of Slayers #2

A League of Slayers: Diamond Eyes

Rate this book
Like many Slayers, Cash has skeletons in the closet he doesn't want to talk about, but unlike his immortal comrades, his pain is still fresh enough he's not quite ready to move on. He's been using sex to replace the love he lost. He's been using his role with The League to keep his mind of his past.

Sabrina lost her sense of sight in her teens, but she overcame, became independent and lived on, keeping one little aspect of her impairment a secret. With a single touch, she can see the present as if she'd never lost the ability to use her eyes. She can also see the past and the future, making her a hot commodity in the war against evil.

Destiny brings her to The League. Fate delivers her to Cash. But are they both ready for what the deities have in store for them?

I am a married, 33 year old, female, with no children. By trade I am a network engineer with far too many years under my belt. My first book was published in 2010 by Kerlak Publishing, followed by a short story in 2011 through Dreamspinner Press. I don't have any formal training, I simply write what I feel. I have a vivid imagination and love building dream worlds for my readers to escape to.

I recently discovered that I am a hopeless romantic and that usually makes for some very turbulent stories. As most know, love is a mountain and at its peak there's infinite beauty, but it's best appreciated after a difficult climb... that's how I write. The world would be a boring place if we didn't have to fight a little for what we wanted, now wouldn't it.

Some spoilers ahead ... read at your own risk.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story; I know it's the 2nd in a series and really excited about the next one. Not sure where she's going to go, Ari, Bent, Syria ... or a totally new character, but if the first two are any indication, it's going to be a great read.

Cash's past haunts him to the point he refuses to believe in a 'happily-ever-after' or even a 'happy-for-now' life. To him, all life is is hunting demons. I love a troubled soul.

Sabrina could have used a little more fleshing out, but as a young virgin, yeah, there wasn't going to be too much more to her. She is portrayed as fiercly independent, which I totally loved.

I couldn't exactly rate this one a five-star read. I don't really hold it against the author for a couple of minor typos (sear instead of seer really stood out) - we are all human and little things like that are bound to slip by us. And there was a couple of formatting issues that were probably beyond Ms. Cassatta's control as the conversion process to .mobi isn't exactly perfect. No, there were things left out that made the flow of the book come to a stop for me.

The first sex scene between the two main characters (Cash and Sabrina) there was a major sticking point - the author makes a point about Sabrina being disrobed, but nothing about Cash. The guy goes from being fully clothed to naked without a sentence in between. I even read the scene three times to see if I missed something. Now, if this was one of the formatting issues where a sentence or two was lost in the conversion, I do apologize to the author. However ...

Another sex scene between the two later on in the book had Cash slipping off his jeans with no problem, no issues with his boots. The reason this bugs me was that earlier in the book, where he is having anonymous sex with a hooker, it is made perfectly clear Cash doesn't want to take the time (he says 10 minutes - think that's an exaggeration, but still, minutes would be lost) to unlace his boots to get his jeans off. Then suddenly it's not an issue later on? He can slip his boots and jeans off with one fell swoop? It would have been a nice touch for him to be frustrated at not being able to get his clothes off fast enough and his boots giving him trouble, now that he's with his true love, but ... yeah, no.

As a reader, I did feel the whole 'soulmate/romance' thing was rushed. I think it would have been more compelling to have Cash suffer more, resist more ... I actually expected something to happen to keep them from touching. Actually, I expected an antagonist somewhere in the book, a demon to show up to prevent their bonding, maybe one who fed off virgin seers or needed a virgin seer for some devious plot. While there was some conflict (Cash wanting to refuse the inevitable, Ari collapsing after using too much magic), there just didn't seem to be 'enough' like the first book. Sabrina was never in danger, neither was Cash, and I really didn't get the sense that Ari would die, either. The decision for Sabrina to be a seer seemed to be a non-starter either. She made her choices, in my opinion, a little too easily. While I get the whole 'soulmate' thing can be overwhelming, her decision to leave her family behind didn't seem to bother her too much. The author had made a point to have Sabrina remember some of her history with her family, but when Cash came along, it seemed the hormones took over and it was good-bye mom, dad, and brother, hello heavy breathing and sex. More conflict could have made the clothing issues above seem trival and probably would have made this a five-star read.

As I said, I did like the book, I like that she incorporated a character (Deacon) from the first book that played a very important role at the end, but this could have been so much more. This I do believe is a 'novella' - it could have been a novel, a very compelling novel. I still look foward to the next book as Ms. Cassatta has created a rich, lively world with flawed heroes (my favorite kind)and one kick-ass, take-no-bullshit leader (Syria) who I hope gets her own book very, very soon.

I read the first book in this series and was waiting impatiently for this one.

We first met Cash in Aphrodite's Gift. It's where I first decided I wanted to read his story. And Allison didn't disappoint with the writing of this book. We initially see Cash as a young man and find out how he became a slayer. From his own heartbreaking history, he seemed to find his niche as a slayer.

Enter his soul mate, Sabrina. Without giving away spoilers, these two were made for one another. Sure, they have their own ups and downs, what couple doesn't. But they soon discover they were meant for one another.

Grab your copy of the book, go on, get to it. You won't be disappointed.
