Monsieur Bihotz, her neighbour who lives alone now his mother has died, is supposed to be her babysitter but Solange has other ideas. There’s really not much scope in her boring village, Clèves.

But who cares, Solange will get to do it, go all the way, whatever it takes.

All the Way is a brilliant and hilarious picture of an adolescent girl.

About the author

Marie Darrieussecq was born on January 3, 1969. She was raised in a small village in the Basque Country.

While finishing her PhD in French Literature, she wrote her first novel, Truismes (Pig Tales) which was published in September 1996 by Paul Otchakovsky-Laurens (POL), who have published all her subsequent novels as well. After the success of Truismes, Darrieussecq decided to quit her teaching position at the University of Lille to concentrate on writing her novels. Her first husband was a mathematician, her second is an astrophysicist. She gave birth to a son in 2001 and to a daughter in 2004.

She endorsed Ségolène Royal's candidacy during the French Presidential Elections of 2007.

Clèves (English version titled All The Way) was the fifth Darrieussecq novel I've read and easily the most explicit and darkly comic. It deals with the sexual awakening of a girl called Solange and that of her young friends, and goes places where most writers wouldn't even dare to go when it comes to adolescent sex, and the sexualisation of children. Not as an uncomfortable read as Lolita, even though this does feature a 'dangerous' close relationship with her older neighbour and babysitter. It's basically a coming-of-age story; about the pains of growing up, but it just happens to have a lot more naughty bits in.

Doesn't at all surprise me that this came out of France, as it's they, more than others, that like to push the boundaries when it comes to taboo subjects in cinema and literature. Had this been written by a more famous writer it would likely have caused wider outrage; especially in the woke world of today where it seems everything upsets everybody - only recently Orwell's 1984 was given a 'trigger warning' in fear that it might upset students for Christ's sake, but I praise Darrieussecq for being ever so frank when it came to Solange wondering about boys' and girls' genitals, experiencing first periods, experimenting with boys, getting damp 'down there', worrying about body image, and finally losing her cherry.

The novel isn't one of Darrieussecq's best, but I quite liked it. Apparently it was written in response to certain comments Nicolas Sarkozy made about literature.

I do not like Darrieussecq books, especially "Truism" one of his first one. A woman transforms herself into sow. Is not Kafka who wants. Ambitious project but which failed lamentably. The promotion of the book was outrageous until shocking some critics (Jérôme Garcin for example).
This one is different.
Soundtrack, new wave 80th. Good.
Topic :the passage to adulthood seen by the girls. it is rather original. But it is raw. Darrieussecq is psychoanalyst. Description is clinical. Sexuality is described unfussy. The pain, lack of pleasure, frustration. The men are loose.It is a bittersweet portrait of generation pre AIDS (mine), of its illusions, failures and cowardices.

J’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer Marie Darrieussecq au Writer’s Festival de Vancouver et je suis tombée sous le charme. Mon père et moi avions beaucoup aimé Truismes mais je n’ai rien lu d’elle depuis. J’ai donc acheté Clèves, un roman sur l’éveil de la sexualité d’une jeune fille, Solange, dans les années 80. Je n’ai pas été déçue! Le langage est cru, il y a des moments difficiles mais la justesse du ton ne ment pas – je ne me souviens pas avoir lu quoique ce soit d’aussi franc et direct sur la sexualité d'adolescente. Solange et ses amies semblent ne parler que de « ça », veulent faire « ça » et, éventuellement, certaines font « ça ». Comment trouver sa place dans cet univers d’adultes –mère dépressive, père absent qui s’exhibe en public et voisin payé pour veiller sur elle-, dans ce corps qui change –quoi faire avec ses mains- et avec toutes les voix qui l’assaillent, la sienne en particulier. Solange n’a pas froid aux yeux et elle est prête à beaucoup pour devenir adulte. Sa naïveté et son impatience de connaitre la passion nous font craindre pour elle. Les temps sont différents – pas d’Internet, pas de cellulaire - mais l’adolescence se vit dans la même urgence de passer dans cet autre monde, celui de la liberté. Le roman est une suite de courts paragraphes qui donnent un rythme et un ton particulier à la lecture.

Solange is een meisje dat thuis niet veel aandacht krijgt. Zoals veel meisjes kijkt ze op naar haar vader, een egotrippende vrouwenloper, maar die is er zelden. Ook haar moeder, die in het dorp een winkeltje uitbaat is er niet vaak voor Solange. Ze werd opgevangen door de buurvrouw en haar zoon, na het overlijden van de buurvrouw door de zoon.
Het verhaal van Solange begint als ze in de laatste jaren van de lagere school zit en loopt verder tot ze ongeveer 15-16 is.
Solange zelf is de vertelster, niet in de ik-vorm maar in de 3e persoon. Het zijn haar gevoelens en gedachten die de lezer verneemt.
Als kind is ze niet erg gelukkig. Ze wordt gepest in de school. Ze is al heel jong erg geïnteresseerd in sex. Ze droomt er van met een jongen naar bed te gaan, haar maagdelijkheid te verliezen. Ze wordt vaak gekwetst maar kwetst zelf ook om haar zin te krijgen.
Het boek deed me wel wat aan mijn eigen vroegste puberteit denken, alleen was ik niet zo erg met sex bezig. Maar de onzekerheid, de omgang tussen meisjes die zich willen bewijzen, zich stoerder voordoen dan ze zijn, hun smachten naar liefde en uitkijken naar volwassenheid, dat alles was heel herkenbaar en invoelbaar beschreven.
Het was het eerste boek dat ik van deze Franse auteur las en ik wil nog wel verder met haar werk kennis maken.

Some books are harder to review than others and ‘All the Way’ certainly falls in the harder category.

This is the story of Solange’s sexual coming of age. It is told in three parts and while you might think that it gets easier to read about her dreams, fantasies and actions as she gets older, it didn’t quite work that way for me. In fact, there was a lot in this story that really disturbed me. That is significant because I read a lot of erotic books covering a range of topics and rarely find myself wanting to look away from what the author is trying to show me.

Solange’s story is told in three parts: Getting It, Doing It and Doing It Again and follows her from age 10 until a few, unspecified number of, years later. Solange is the daughter of a father she hero worships but who is rarely around and appears to be having affairs. Solange isn’t really aware of her father’s escapades although his behaviour does manage to embarrass her at times. The girl’s mother doesn’t seem to play an active role in Solange’s life. She is around but appears to be suffering from depression and migraines; something that appears to be connected to the photo of a young boy she keeps on her bedside table. With her parents being less than present in her life, much of Solange’s care is left to a neighbour, Monsieur Bihotz.

The reader follows Solange as her body and her interests change. She evolves from an innocent and happy young girl into a sex obsessed teenager with little to no guidance and guessing her way through discoveries and experiences. Everything the girl thinks she knows has either been found in an encyclopaedia or picked up from girlfriend gossip and neither can protect her or those around her from the devastation her transition will cause.

This book managed to disturb me on several levels. In the first part of the story the interactions between Solange and Monsieur Bihotz gave me the creeps. While it is never suggested that the man abuses Solange, the descriptions of him tucking her into her bed and, especially, the fact that the young girl can describe his penis in various states of arousal really got to me.

“He has two dicks. The one for pissing and the other one. The other one is much bigger, the colour of a turkey’s comb, like the canna lilies.”

In the two subsequent parts of the story Solange is a few years older, although the reader is never told exactly how old, and throws herself head first into a sex obsessed world. It was her desperation to experience everything as soon as possible that really got to me. On the one hand I was very impressed with the descriptions of all the insecurities teenagers go through when it comes to relationships and intimacy. On the other hand the way she throws herself into everything is so far beyond my level of experience that it shocked me to the core. It might have been easier if Solange’s age in those later years had been specified. Because the reader is only told she is a few years older than 10 it is up to them to imagine whether she is say, 13, 15 or 17. The fact that everything described in this book might have been happening to a girl aged only 14 made this a hard read.

Having said all of that, there were a few things I really admired about this book. The story is told in a rather fragmented fashion, jumping from thought to thought. Of course, that is exactly the way the teenage mind works and while it made the story a bit hard to follow at times, it also meant that the reader never had the opportunity to forget that they were living inside a teenage mind. The selfishness of teenagers and their capacity to make everything that happens about them was brilliantly portrayed, even if it made Solange a very hard character to like on occasion. I was also really impressed with some of the descriptions of Solange’s changing body.

“Her nipples feel like they’re on fire. As if two eyes were opening in her chest, agonizing, blind and exposed to scrutiny.”

Just as there were one or two times when her emotions struck a chord.

“Oh, to be a child again. When she was little, the external world didn’t seem to weigh so heavily on the surface of her being.”

Maybe this was such a hard book to read because it is too realistic. It brought back memories of all the insecurities, confusing longings and pitfalls of adolescence with too much clarity. Some of Solange’s thoughts and experiences were so recognisable they might have been written about me. That combined with the fact that a lot of what she actually experiences goes way beyond anything I encountered during that time in my life may well explain why I feel so ambivalent about this book. One thing I do know for sure is that I’m happy I don’t have a teenage daughter living at home. I think this story would give any parent of a teenage daughter nightmares – even a mother who was kind of wild at that age herself.

Over all I would call this a very explicit, at times shocking, coming of age story written by an author who has an exceptional insight into the teenage mind. The writing in this book is brutally honest and at times poetically beautiful. This is the sort of book that will shock and disturb many because it shows us a part of the teenage experience we would rather deny. I defy anybody to read this book and not walk away from it with strong feelings. Whether those feelings are positive or negative very much depends on the sensibilities of the reader in question. This reader finds herself both impressed and disturbed.

Lu rapidement, difficile de le lâcher, bizarrement!
Touchée par cette description de l'entrée dans le "monde adulte" d'une fille, proposée ici.
On y retrouve cette volonté d'exister, qui passe par le désir des hommes.
Cette volonté d'être une "grande", une "femme".
Entrer dans l'âge adulte en tant que fille, c'est être en proie au désir d'hommes plus âgés, aussi...
Cette violence que représente l'entrée dans ce monde pour les filles dans la société patriarcale dans laquelle nous vivons.

Review : Marie Darrieussecq (Bayonne, 1969) schoorde zeer hoog met haar debuut Truismes (Zeugzoenen in Nederlandse vertaling), een roman over een vrouw die langzaam in een varken verandert. Ruim een miljoen exemplaren gingen ervan over de toonbank en de vertaalrechten werden aan zevenendertig landen verkocht. Sindsdien geldt Darrieussecq als een van de origineelste en opmerkelijkste schrijvers van Frankrijk. Solange neemt ons mee in de verwarrende wereld van een pubermeisje. Het begon al op de basisschool met de toespelingen, de spelletjes, de handtastelijkheden. Het' doen, en de strategieën en verleidingstactieken die daarbij horen, is voor Solange en haar vriendinnen al op tienjarige leeftijd een grote obsessie. Haar ouders zijn bijna altijd afwezig, en op school is iedereen geobsedeerd door seks. Zes jaar later is Solange een aantrekkelijke prooi voor de jongens en mannen uit het dorp. Marie Darrieussecq laat zien hoe pubermeisjes zelf hun seksuele escapades ervaren. Een verfrissend nieuwe blik op het Lolita-thema Die behoefte om er bij te horen, leidt tot haar eerste seksuele ervaring, met een oudere jongen, die ze op een feest ontmoet. Marie Darrieussecq beschrijft het leven zoals het is, direct, rauw en zonder franjes. De aaneenschakeling van losse impressies, dagboekfragmenten, definities uit het woordenboek en flarden dialogen monden uit in een fascinerend, maar ook intreurig portret van een meisje dat losbandigheid met vrijheid verwart. Clèves' luidt de oorspronkelijke titel van 'Solange', naar het fictieve dorp in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk waar het verhaal zich afspeelt. Marie Darrieussecq (1969), knipoogt met deze elfde titel naar de klassieker van Madame de la Fayette, 'La Princesse de Clèves', over de driehoeksverhouding van een jonge gehuwde vrouw in de 16de eeuw die ontdekt wat hartstocht is als ze op een andere man verliefd wordt en zich in het klooster terugtrekt. Solange is een ontnuchterende schets van hoe de wereld van een puber er zou kunnen uitzien als ze niemand heeft om op terug te vallen.

En bok som osar av sex. Hela bokens handling handlar om huvudpersonens sexuella handlingar eller tankar. En Lolita som upptäcker sin sexuella kraft , som utforskar sig själv.
Boken hade kunnat vara ok om det inte hade varit för språket, det finns de som tycker språket är vackert och poetiskt men för mig var det bara rörigt.
Jag hade svårt att förstå vad det var jag läste, händer detta nu eller är det bara tankar och fantasier .

Cela fait longtemps que j'ai lu ce livre, mais j'avais été frappée qu'enfin un écrivain s'attache à décrire la sexualité des jeunes fille, de vouloir le faire jusqu'à le faire et regretter parfois...
Ce livre est très dur et je comprends que certains sont choqués. Pourtant la langue est belle et vraie et ce roman reste vivant dans ma mémoire comme serait une cousine éloignée qu'on a longtemps enviée, et pris en pitié mais aussi aimée.

Une étoile et demie, allez, je veux bien. C'est une suite de clichés, sans aucune espèce d'originalité, ou même de crédibilité. Si ce roman a pour but de rendre sa place à la sexualité adolescente féminine, je suis pour à 100% - mais l'exécution laisse grandement à désirer. Loin d'être révolutionnaire, ou même originale, sans aucune nuance ni aucun réalisme, Darrieussecq écrit une sexualité soumise, stéréotype, dont le seul but semble être celui de choquer. De plus, si ce roman se veut véritablement une réécriture de La Princesse de Clèves, je dois avoir raté quelque chose...

Prinzessinnen schildert gnadenlos das sexuelle Erwachen eines jungen Mädchens. Der Schreibstil ist dabei sehr sprunghaft, ein Absatz zur ersten Regelblutung, der nächste über ihre Eltern und im dritten eine abstrakte Beobachtung zu ihrem Nachbarn. Am Anfang war ich kurz davor das Buch aufzugeben, weil es mich so verwirrt hat. Am Ende konnte ich darüber gar nicht mehr klagen. Habe mich wohl reingelesen und es mehr als wirre Teenagergedankenfetzen aufgenommen. In denen wird übrigens kein Detail ausgelassen. Es wird gerieben, geleckt, geritten, gestopft, menstruiert, masturbiert und noch viel mehr. Einerseits erfrischend ehrlich das alles mal beim (mir oft zu derben) Namen zu nennen, andererseits ist es erschreckend, was die junge Solange so alles erlebt. Beinahe jede sexuelle Zweisamkeit, in die sie gerät, hat irgendetwas Unangenehmes an sich. Sei es der Junge, der sie immer nur anruft, wenn er “Bespielung” braucht oder die Beziehung zu einem deutlich älteren Mann. All das wird schonungslos geschildert ohne je zu werten. Letzteres hat mich auf dem falschen Fuß erwischt, denn manchmal war ich verunsichert, ob die Autorin hier wirklich eine traurige Realität zeichnet oder das Ganze doch eher für normal hält. Wahrscheinlich will sie schockieren und auf etwas hinweisen, aber gerade bei so extremen Situationen hätte ich mir ein klärendes Nachwort gewünscht.

Kann man lesen, wenn man mal wieder ehrliche, extrem direkte Worte zum Thema Sex möchte und sich nicht von einem flatterhaften Schreibstil abschrecken lässt. Außerdem gibt es ein wenig französische Meeresluft zu schnuppern.

Beautifully written, I'd have given it more stars but I can't say I liked it. It's one of the most disturbing and depressing books I've read in a long time. I wonder how French men feel about this portrayal of themselves as self-absorbed sexual harrassers and abusers? Set in the early 80s in a tiny provincial tourist resort, its narrator is a young teenage girl, obsessed with losing her virginity and dieting and lacking any kind of self awareness. Strangely it confirms every worst prejudice one might have about French attitudes to sexuality; particularly its arrogant sexism. Interesting that the original title emphasises the town and its attitudes. The English translation is without irony, called "All The Way" with a picture of a very pouty sexy girl on the cover. Sigh.

Délicat.
Drôle.
Très descriptif et un peu décousu, déconstruit.
Des fois on dirait un rassemblement de petites images, comme on voit des bouts d'un film quand on avance la bobine très vite.

C'est une écriture qui parait avancer vite, et tous les blancs qu'elle saute c'est à vous de les remplir pour pouvoir la suivre..
Ce qui, pour ceux avec l'imagination fertile, laisse une appréciation particulière.
Des fois ça joue presque à saute-mouton.
