Comic Book Artist. He studied pre-medicine at the University of Tennessee, and then moved to Aspen, Colorado, and later San Diego, where he taught martial arts, became an award winning water skier, and began drawing comic books. In 1994, he was hired by Top Cow Productions in Century City, California, where he was the co-creator of "Witchblade", a comic about a voluptuous female detective who fights evil with the aid of a mystical weapon that attaches itself to her arm and gives her superpowers. Turner later founded Aspen MLT, a Santa Monica publishing company that created online comic adaptations for the NBC television series "Heroes" and titles including "Fathom", a deep-sea story about a female superhero. He was also a regular cover artist for "Superman/Batman" and "The Flash". Turner's work was in demand for special editions and similar projects, and he drew covers for DC Comics' "Justice League" and Marvel's "Civil War". The milestone 500th issue of "Uncanny X-Men", released in July, 2008, featured one of Turner's special edition covers. He died of complications from chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer he had begun treatment for in 2000.

This teaser introduces the main character Aspen Matthews and sets up a story that has the potential to be exactly my jam.

Well, okay, there’s actually not that much story or even set-up of such in those mere 13 pages, obviously. But Aspen is a marine biologist and scheduled to join a deep sea research facility. And that’s enough to pique my interest.

I feel a bit ambivalent about the art. There are several panels with a lot of nice details and the colors are vibrant. It looks good. But Aspen looks either like Barbie or a sex doll. I can’t decide which. But I don’t like that part of the artwork.

This teaser is not uninteresting. Aspen, the main character, has a very weird body though. Barbie with a surfboard. Nobody stands like that on a beach... plus she doesn’t seem too bright, considering her first scuba lesson. Regardless, the artwork is not bad, the story has potential.

And now, thanks to Dennis, I read this thing again and will continue to some of the sequels. Let‘s see if the story really develops into something good.

A fascinating opening chapter, with Aspen narrating her backstory and current events some, while the backgrounds are a mix of her and some “others” who look human but dress strangely, and seem to live in the ocean depths. And who are not entirely peaceful seeming… This has me very curious to see where it is going to go!

I'm intrigued.

The question I most want answered is "how does Aspen fit all her important organs in that skinny body of hers?"

So far it’s interesting

The art was cool, the beginning seems interesting, and the main seems like someone you want to latch onto. I’d say check it out.

A Modern Classic

While Spawn and The Walking Dead became instant hits, the rest of the creators affiliated with Image Comics created nifty characters with neat story arcs — characters like Gen13, Grifter, Savage Dragon, or the late Michael Turner's Fathom — with tremendous potential.

These characters should've become household names, especially Fathom.

This Zero Issue is a decent intro to the series proper. (I'd love to see a film version of the series starring Rosario Dawson as Aspen Matthews; James Cameron briefly flirted with the concept, but it never materialized. C'est la vie.)

This is the introductory issue for the Fathom comic, currently free on Kindle. I have nothing against female marine biologists going surfing and looking good as they do so, but why make this marine biologist with a mysterious past seem a mere surfer bimbo, and a clueless one in need of rescuing at that? This does not make me want to read on and follow her adventures. The art is detailed, but somewhat lifeless so there’s no incentive there either.

Interesting

This was a fun ride. Anyone who is interested about ocean would agree with me. As a person who used to swim for a long time, I can relate to the first half of the story. This is about a girl who did swimming pretty much whole life. She's an Olympic swimming player, a scuba diver and also a surfer. She's in love with water than anything else
This is the preview for her story of going under the ocean.

Aspen Matthews was in foster care when she arrived on Earth. At age 11.

She only has fragments of her past life—her origins. But she’s always been inexplicably drawn to water, and all things aquatic.

An extremely unusual experience, at sixteen years of age, leads to Aspen’s increased curiosity. And exploration.

Aspen particularly loves snorkeling and scuba diving. After completing college, she has become a marine biologist.

North of the Hawaiian Ridge—building deep-sea habitats…

Aspen’s unique underwater abilities do not go unnoticed.

Interesting artwork.

Cool cliffhanger to end on. Will continue.

I miss Michael Turner and his work.

While I’ve read Fathom (well, the work Michael Turner did on it until his untimely passing), I’d never read Issue 0 - which I guess serves as the prequel to the series. As always, the art is gorgeous, but the story is a bit sparse. To think what he would be up to if he was still around today…

Interesting

Interesting free teaser issue. I don't know if this series is any good, but this does set up what could be a good story.

Bueno, más bien es un 3.5

Los gráficos me encantaron, la historia promete mucho, aunque nos brinda muy poca información, me quedé con ganas de leer el siguiente número.

Fathom #0 introduces you to Aspen a marine biologist who for some reason likes to surf in a g-string. She gets invited to an underwater laboratory where her expertise are needed (not thong surfing that is). This was just a short introduction to who Aspen is, a bit about her past and her strange liking of being in the water. I think I will pick up the next one to see where it takes me!

Comic books are harder to read on my Kindle app than I'd like. Even double-tapping the screen to enlarge a panel doesn't magnify the area enough for these aging eyes!

This intro to the Fathom series was okay. It introduced the character and hinted at some supernatural going-ons. However, it lacked any true conflict.

#2 & #3

included in Fathom vol 1 (collecting just the Top Cow 1-#10) and again in the Fathom vol 1 Definitive (which collects the entire Top Cow run, but omits the Sara Pezzini/Lara Croft stuff, which makes things kinda confusing...)

This first little intro really piqued my interest. Aspen is invited to an awesome underwater lab that is experimenting on some kind of mer-person... i'm intrigued.

Kratučký úvod, niečo ako nič nehovoriaci prológ väčšiny kníh. Viac ako zápletka ma zatiaľ zaujali len brilantné ilustrácie. Uvidíme, či sa to zmení. Vyzerá to tak, že príbeh má potenciál.
