Ο Καμιλλέρι περιγράφει τη νεότητα, την ανακάλυψη της σεξουαλικότητας και των μυστηρίων της ζωής μέσα από το μικρόκοσμο ενός επαρχιακού μπορντέλου που παραπέμπει στις "Θλιμμένες πουτάνες της ζωής μου" του Γκαμπριέλ Γκαρσία Μαρκές, καθώς και στο γνωστό διήγημα του Γιασουνάρι Καουαμπάτα "Το σπίτι των κοιμισμένων κοριτσιών".

About the author

Andrea Camilleri was an Italian writer. He is considered one of the greatest Italian writers of both 20th and 21st centuries.

Originally from Porto Empedocle, Sicily, Camilleri began studies at the Faculty of Literature in 1944, without concluding them, meanwhile publishing poems and short stories. Around this time he joined the Italian Communist Party.

From 1948 to 1950 Camilleri studied stage and film direction at the Silvio D'Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts, and began to take on work as a director and screenwriter, directing especially plays by Pirandello and Beckett. As a matter of fact, his parents knew Pirandello and were even distant friends, as he tells in his essay on Pirandello "Biography of the changed son". His most famous works, the Montalbano series show many pirandellian elements: for example, the wild olive tree that helps Montalbano think, is on stage in his late work "The giants of the mountain"

With RAI, Camilleri worked on several TV productions, such as Inspector Maigret with Gino Cervi. In 1977 he returned to the Academy of Dramatic Arts, holding the chair of Movie Direction, and occupying it for 20 years.

In 1978 Camilleri wrote his first novel Il Corso Delle Cose ("The Way Things Go"). This was followed by Un Filo di Fumo ("A Thread of Smoke") in 1980. Neither of these works enjoyed any significant amount of popularity.

In 1992, after a long pause of 12 years, Camilleri once more took up novel-writing. A new book, La Stagione della Caccia ("The Hunting Season") turned out to be a best-seller.

In 1994 Camilleri published the first in a long series of novels: La forma dell'Acqua (The Shape of Water) featured the character of Inspector Montalbano, a fractious Sicilian detective in the police force of Vigàta, an imaginary Sicilian town. The series is written in Italian but with a substantial sprinkling of Sicilian phrases and grammar. The name Montalbano is an homage to the Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán; the similarities between Montalban's Pepe Carvalho and Camilleri's fictional detective are remarkable. Both writers make great play of their protagonists' gastronomic preferences.

This feature provides an interesting quirk which has become something of a fad among his readership even in mainland Italy. The TV adaptation of Montalbano's adventures, starring the perfectly-cast Luca Zingaretti, further increased Camilleri's popularity to such a point that in 2003 Camilleri's home town, Porto Empedocle - on which Vigàta is modelled - took the extraordinary step of changing its official denomination to that of Porto Empedocle Vigàta, no doubt with an eye to capitalising on the tourism possibilities thrown up by the author's work.

In 1998 Camilleri won the Nino Martoglio International Book Award.

Camilleri lived in Rome where he worked as a TV and theatre director. About 10 million copies of his novels have been sold to date, and are becoming increasingly popular in the UK and North America.

In addition to the degree of popularity brought him by the novels, in recent months Andrea Camilleri has become even more of a media icon thanks to the parodies aired on an RAI radio show, where popular comedian, TV-host and impression artist Fiorello presents him as a raspy voiced, caustic character, madly in love with cigarettes and smoking (Camilleri is well-known for his love of tobacco).

He received an honorary degree from University of Pisa in 2005.

Le vicende di un ragazzino e dei suoi amici, nonché quelle della variegata umanità di un angolo di Sicilia, che ruotano attorno a un rispettabile bordello prima e durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Una piccola sorprendente storia e un Camilleri frizzante e in piena forma!
Consigliabile ai reduci da letture insulse e/o pesanti.

Στέκομαι στα υποκοριστικά του Καμιλλέρι : πόσο όμορφα και ανάλαφρα ηχούν! Ο Νενέ, ο Τζουτζού, ο Τσίτσο, ο Μινικούτσο και η Λούλλα. Αέρινες μορφές που μπαινοβγαίνουν στην πανσιόν και τριγυρίζουν στη Βιγκάτα και τη Μοντελούζα.

Pues no sé como llegué a ésta novela distinta de dicho autor ,pero debo reconocer que me ha encantado ambas cosas ,su cambio de registro, esta ocasión en su edad más madura, Camilleri se retrotrae a recuerdos de la infancia en los años 40 y 45 de la Italia siciliana. Estamos en los años inmediatamente anteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sicilia. La pensión Eva es un cruce de caminos para todo tipo de clientes. Quien hace peticiones extrañas y quien nunca es suficiente, quien se enamora y quien le gusta simplemente mirar. La habitual variedad humana en la que entran incluso los más pequeños, los que se destetan, los que fingen ingenuos y los habilidosos hasta que ... llega la guerra, que todo lo distorsiona y lo silencia todo. Entre los desaparecidos, partisanos, desertores y prófugos llegan los estadounidenses, pero solo quedan escombros de la pensión Eva. Lo mejor ese regusto que te deja por esa prosa sencilla pero a la vez elegante notándose el cariño o yo así lo percibí del autor escribiéndola. Pudiendo hasta vivir y oler el aroma de una muestra representativa de Italia y una época transcurrida entre alegrías y tristezas, todo perfectamente sazonado con la magistral pluma de Camilleri.
PD: "La guerra había terminado, parecía acusar a distancia que tal vez nunca había estado realmente allí. ¿Quieres ver que lo habían soñado? "

Di gradevole lettura, anche se un po’ slegato, nel senso che in pratica si tratta del racconto di singoli episodi o fatti che hanno come filo conduttore questo piccolo casino di Vigata, ai tempi del fascismo. Si legge in un paio d’ore e, a suo modo, non è neanche male.

"Die Pension Eva" ist eine kurze und eher leichte Geschichte, welche der italienische Autor Andrea Camilleri mit 80 auf das Papier brachte. Mit einer undurchschaubaren Mischung aus eigenen Erinnerungen und Erlebnissen, Erfindungen und möglichen Realitäten beschreibt er das Leben in Italien in den Vierzigerjahren, inmitten des zweiten Weltkrieges. Der junge Nenè versucht zwischen Faschismus und tödlichen Luftangriffen sein sexuelles Erwachen auszuleben, bestenfalls in dem Puff "Pension Eva". Dass dabei nicht alles gut gehen kann, das versteht sich von selbst.

Als kleine Lebenslehre aufgebaut, ist diese Geschichte ein merkwürdiges Ding zwischen ernsten und schweren Kriegsmomenten und humoristischen Sexualerfahrungen, ein Büchlein, das erstaunlich schnell die Stimmungen wechselt und dabei doch funktioniert. Zwar würde man nach der Lektüre gerne wissen, wie viele der Geschehnisse wirklich wahr sind, Camilleri wird dies aber nicht mehr erzählen können. So bleibt eine gut geschriebene Begegnung mit dem alten Italien, eine fast romantische Perspektive auf die dunkle Zeit.

Me sorprende que Camilleri escribiera una novela tan floja, inocente y poco original como esta a sus 80 años. La historia la hemos leído mil veces en otras novelas: despertar de la sexualidad de un/unos adolescente/s, burdel de barrio y escenario de guerra o posguerra. Solo que aquí los personajes son superficiales, las diversas historias personales se nos presentan a modo de catálogo, sin que haya conexión entre ellas más allá del burdel. Se me ha hecho una lectura aburrida. No me ha dicho nada.

Non è un libro sul commissario Montalbano.
Non è un giallo.

La protagonista vera e propria è una pensione, che ospita un bordello, con le sue storie di donne che ci lavorano e uomini che lo frequentano.

È uno spaccato di vita italiana a cavallo della seconda guerra mondiale, che si intreccia con la vita e le fantasie di Nenè (che è Camilleri stesso?).

Rigorosamente nel dialetto di Camilleri.

Delizioso. Ancora una volta il gran Maestro mi cattura pagina dopo pagina, mi rapisce con le sue storie particolari, che solo la sua voce sa raccontare.

La pensión Eva nos adentra en el inicio de la sexualidad en la etapa de la adolescencia. Nenè el protagonista de este libro se aventura a experimentar el sexo y el amor de la mano de su prima. Basado a finales de la segunda guerra mundial, cruzaremos la puerta del prostíbulo que le da nombre al libro, la pensión Eva, en el que Nenè y sus amigos nos hacen disfrutar de anécdotas vividas allí dentro y de las mujeres que trabajan. Libro corto y ameno, con una narración impecable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ho scelto questo romanzo di Camilleri , da grande ammiratrice delle varie storie del commissario Montalbano, proprio perché volevo tastare lo stile e la capacità dell'autore al di là di ciò che [mi] è più noto. Assolutamente non delusa, anzi. Audace e diretto, scorrevole, interessante. Particolare non solo la scelta del luogo di ambientazione, ma soprattutto il tempo : sul finire della seconda guerra mondiale.

I did not like the mixture of lite and war-torn trauma.

I did not like the translator's weird efforts to render dialect using misspellings and other weirdness (querque, every time, ridiculous).

I particularly did not like the continuous, casual sexism that took for granted that men are entitled to sex and that women exist solely to provide it for them. Perhaps the lowest point was when they all got naked with the prostitutes and rode them like horses in a joust. I think it was supposed to be funny. It wasn't.

Camilleri kindly and elegantly whispers to us the coming of age story of a young man and the development of his sexuality in the backdrop of conservative old town in rural Sicily before and during WW2. Nenè as a young teenager understands there is a great mystery that he is not privy to and that it has something to do with women and a hotel which seems to be forbidden and shredded with mystery called: Pensione Eva, which was a brothel. Even the name of the hotel is evocative, reminding us of Eve, the first woman and by many defined as the temptress of Adam, but also the most innocent woman that ever existed that without any malice was naked and wanted to eat the apple of knowledge; Eva/Eve in her simplicity wants to recall to memory the idiosyncrasy between simple and innocent sexuality and image of a temptress. It is interesting to note that brothels were legal in Italy at that time and quite regularly frequented by all layers of society, so while the culture was very conservative the presence of a local brothel was simply the way of life.
Nenè's research for the big secret nobody wants to tell him develops in an early sexual game with his older cousin and then with an experience with an older woman. By this point the idea of what was the business of Pensione Eva becomes clearer and being able to become a client of Pensione Eva becomes his pubescent dream but he is not legally allowed until he turns 18. What is very interesting is how clearly the frustration and curiosity of this young man of a different era is but also how delicately and cleanly it is portrayed as natural curiosity and not as a morbose obsession or a perversion; this is very different from how we portray sexuality these days.
The story develops when one of Nenè’s closest friends' father buys the Pensione Eva; Nenè and his friends not legally allowed to be clients instead come up with a way to talk to the young ladies. Every Monday it was the day off of the brothel and of the ladies that worked there so Nenè and his friends would visit them to eat together and talk while bringing wine and food. This ritual became more important than their desire for sex, which never happened, because they started knowing the stories of all the young women that arrived every 15 days at the Pensione Eva. Each of them with a story behind them, with a personality and desires of their own, so getting to know the lives and work stories of these ladies became a study of humanity for these young men. Each of the stories of the sex worker are meaningful even if narrated lightly for a summer read. The backdrop of the war gives a note of realism to a tale that could have been of any era before our current one, the bomb, the refugees, the Germans and the Americans, they all played out in a theater of life that felt very human. These young men eventually have to leave this town and grow up, the war will finish and bring horror and destruction to all the ways of life.
This story is meant to be a lightweight but meaningful tale of a different time and how sexuality developed in young men; it also portrays women as full round human beings. Where the story is still wanting, but intentionally given it wasn’t the intent of the book, is in describing the horrors of trafficking, poverty and war, but not all stories should.

Gradevole con la giusta punta di ironia. E intorno all'ironia e come si presenta penso ruoti molto la sfumatura più intima e autobiografica del romanzo.

È un percorso lungo da spiegare...



Meno disincantato rispetto ad altri romanzi di Camilleri in cui, solitamente, i personaggi e la storia sembrano avvolti da una patina di fiabesco, seppur mai mancano di realismo e crudità.

Ho sempre avuto la percezione che questa "carta velina" di fiaba rimandasse ad una appassionata curiosità dell'autore per i luoghi e i volti della propria infanzia e giovinezza. Con un delicato distacco racconta numerevoli sfaccettafure dell'umanità (come cosa dell'uomo): con lo sgudrdo ammirato e il candore come un antropologo che, affascinato, narra della propria esperienza da osservatore interno con lo stupore e la voglia di stupirsi di fronte ad un qualcosa di altro e sconosciuto.

Qui no. L'impressione è stata di affacciarsi ad un romanzo in cui questa impostazione è un po' persa. Lo stile è riconoscibilissimo, la caratterizzazione e la lieve punta di ironia ne sono lo zampino. Ma c'è anche un punto di vista più intimo, meno distaccato, con una parvenza di tratti autobiografici.

Alla pensione Eva le bombe sono bombe e i personaggi ci sono sotto. Ad aiutarli c'è solo l'ironia. In questo senso, l'ironia non ha il solo peso di un artefatto stilistico dell'autore. Diventa, piuttosto, un atto consapevole degli stessi personaggi di fronte all'impotenza più totale.
In questo senso, a mio parere, emergono tratti autobiografici: questa ironia mi è parsa molto più intima e concitata, molto più rappresentativa di quello che è (o è stato) un modo di Camilleri per fronteggiare il dolore, piuttosto che un mero vezzo stilistico.

Scuola di vita

È quello che mi aspettavo. La pensione Eva, come tante ce ne sono state, più romantica dei bordelli occulti e trasferiti all'occasione direttamente presso alberghi e dimore di potenti e danarosi come accade oggi, più sincera e genuina perché semplice era la vita e il tessuto sociale di quei tempi. Siamo negli anni immediatamente precedenti la seconda guerra mondiale. Sicilia. La pensione Eva è un crocevia di ogni genere di clienti. Chi fa strane richieste e chi non gli basta mai, chi si innamora e chi gli piace solo guardare. La solita varietà umana nella quale si inseriscono anche i picciliddri, quelli da svezzare, quelli fintamente ingenui e quelli scafati finché... non arriva la guerra, che tutto stravolge e tutto silenzia. Fra scomparsi, partigiani, disertori e fuggitivi arrivano gli americani, ma della pensione Eva restano solo macerie. Forse gli rimprovero un finale un po' brusco, o forse è soltanto che ho perso d'improvviso dei compagni di viaggio e questo, a volte, è difficile da mandar giù.

Un altro libro carino di Camilleri che colpisce con il suo solito umorismo siculo e l'abilitá di delineare volti e persone che puoi vedere, sentire, quasi scherzarci.
Bella l'ambientazione dirante il conflitto bellico della seconda guerra mondiale, con la difficoltá di trovare il caffé, il pane, con i bombardamenti e i rifugi.
Storia di un bordello di paesino, storia di ragazzini che vogliono provare il sesso, storia di prostitute che vengono da ogni parte d'Italia e si portano dietro le loro storie tragicomiche abilmente raccontate da Camilleri nel mezzo del libro.

Un Camilleri desconocido que a sus ochenta años se da el permiso para escribir una novela completamente distinta a los demás. Sin crímenes ni investigaciones. Una pensión en un pueblo recondito dónde mujeres de paso le alegran la vida a varios hombres que quiere saciar su sed.
Dos adolescentes amigos, junto a un tercero que es hijo del dueño de la pensión, descubrirán en despertar sexual.
Décadas más tarde, luego de que la guerra destruyera la vida de Miles de familias, los dos amigos se vuelven a reencontrar aunque la pensión y el pueblo ya no sean lo que alguna vez fueron.

Very entertaining read
