God, this book was a disappointment. Not just because of the more or less lukewarm ending, or the fact that half the adventure is just not in the book, but mainly because, holy shit, this thing was so fucking racist.

Let’s talk about the good things here first. I still really like the characters. Snow is now basically a superpowered magic weapon, and it’s a look that fits her. Gabe is the leader of an ornery band of angels, and even though he has developed into kind of an ass, he is a really interesting character. I loved Dorian in this, especially because his character just really seemed to come together. Cindy is now a powerful witch, and there is a lot of focus on her and Snow’s friendship – hallelujah!

I loved Abernathy, even though that is just seriously not a name for a dragon; I even thought it was cool when we found out what’s actually up with him. I also liked the whole ‘Let’s rescue mom’ thing, even though the new Big Bad was behaving super strange. I did, however, really like the twist in the whole love-triangle paradigm – this book shows that love evolves and changes, and that that is not necessarily a bad thing.

But the racism. Oh my lord, the racism.

Don’t get me wrong, I do not believe that the author deliberately treated her only non-white female characters like shit. We all have a lot of internalized prejudices, and most of us will at some point realize that the way we think is not as innocent as we believe, and then at least the majority will try and change the way they perceive the world. At least I hope so. I tend to be an eternal optimist about human nature.

However, that doesn’t mean I have to like a book that literally treats their only non-white characters the way Blood and Snow does.

We already talked about Kenmei. He is still a huge cliché, even though he did get some extra layers in the last book. But now I want to talk about the other two characters, the only two girls in the whole book who aren’t literally lily-white.

Mulan and Pocahontas.

First of all, I already said in my first review that Miss Workman does not seem to know the difference between a fairy tale and a Disney movie. Neither Mulan nor Pocahontas are fairy tale characters. Their inclusion in this story was unnecessary from the beginning, and seeing how they were treated, it is just plain insulting to everybody who loved these characters growing up.

Let’s start with Pocahontas, because her plight in this book was a little less horrible than Mulan’s. We are introduced to her as one of the ‘marked’ girls who the Vampire Queen rounded up to lure Snow. She is behaving extremely hostile towards Snow and extremely toady towards the Vampire Queen – she actually begs the Queen to ‘take her body’ as her next vessel.

Can we just sit for a moment and consider how wrong that is in the light of everything white people did to Native Americans, and Native American women in particular? A Native American woman – the only Native American woman most white people are familiar with, mind you – BEGS a white woman in power to TAKE HER BODY. Fuck, it doesn’t even matter that she apparently got tricked by her Hunter into believing she would be the next Vampire Queen once that happened. That actually makes it even more awful. You know, ALL the other Disney Princesses in this book are depicted as sweet and good and all that other sugary bullshit, but Pocahontas is a power-hungry bitch? This is just so disgusting.

But believe you me, it wasn’t the worst instance of this book treating characters of color like something your dog puked out.

So let’s talk about Mulan. My heart bleeds for the Mulan in this book. It’s just so incredibly unfair…
Now get this. We all know who Mulan is, right? A brave, strong warrior woman who went out dressed as a man and SAVED ALL OF CHINA and brought honor to her family. She is amazing, brave, and one of the most relatable Disney characters for girls our age.

And you know what the only thing she gets to do in this book is?

She gets to serve tea to her husband Kenmei and a bunch of white kids.

I don’t even know where to start with that. First of all, of course there can’t be two Asian characters who aren’t connected, also let’s just make them marry each other, right? Then, SERVING TEA??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??? Serving tea and politely bowing to some white kids who are supposed to save the world. Shit.

And to add insult to injury, this wasn’t the worst part. You don’t believe me? Well, the author managed to disrespect her even further. Not just is she relegated to little more than half a sentence in a serving position within the book, but her own husband – the Japanese stereotype guy – does not consider her to be his one true love. You heard that right. He takes Snow back into his memories to show her his true one true love – Au-fucking-rora. Sleeping Beauty. ANOTHER beautiful innocent white girl.

Seriously, you need to read the part to get the idea of just how horrible this is:

“That’s right,” he nodded, and a whimsical smile smoked across his lips. “She loved me, but it wasn’t the kind one feels for their eternal mate. Still, I wouldn’t trade a second of the time I spent with her.”

I nodded, but felt bad. “Mulan loves you, though.

“Oh, yes. And I love her.” He sighed. “Perhaps it’s the heartbreak of a first love, or maybe [spoiler] love different than humans.” He chuckled. “Either way, my heart has always and will always belong to Aurora.” He paused and wiped at his eyes. Was he crying? “It was the love I felt for Aurora that allowed me to break free of the Vampire Queen’s grasp.”

At least Snow has the decency to ‘feel bad’ about this situation. I don’t know if the author does. It sure as hell doesn’t feel like it.

If you can’t treat beloved non-white characters with respect in your ‘fairy tale’ fusion book, please just do everybody a favor. Do not write about them.

1 Star for the disappointing and insulting end of a promising series.

Eh....

I expected more for the last Box set. Snow's indecisive actions pertaining to her one true love was excused (sort of) due to her age even if she hadn't slept thru two years. Her allowing the loves of her life to determine whom her heart belonged to was overlooked by the Author. Once she finally settled on one, I didn't really care.
The ending of this story was underwhelming to put it nicely. The Author left too many unanswered questions. I guess I am moist upset with myself for liking certain aspects of the story enough to keep reading.
While I still believe this story does have an audience (a very specific audience) I am not part of it.
While I will never get the (absconded) time back,
I do find solace knowing I did not pay for the first two Box Sets.

Snow White fan thru n thru!

I am a huge Snow White fan so this retelling had to capture me. It did to say the least, but if this book gets made into a movie n they crap it up like they did poor Twilight. I'ma b the number one person ranting because this book, it was so good, I downloaded all the series of it and am moving on to Cindy's story next, and although I can c there are more books, I know that path was opened by Snow White and that makes me happy because yes she is FIRST and always will be. All hail Queen Snow!

Blood and Snow Book 3

I enjoyed this series. The twist on Snow White is very imaginative. With this book Snow was wrapped up very nicely and I loved the short stories at the end that continued the other characters stories and introduced a new one.

Snow White and 7 Brothers.....

When I started this series it was in the box set of Passion Bites. I had a little trouble getting past the first chapter, but once I did there was no turning back! I loved Snow and the brothers. The way Pop's took care of her and the way the brothers loved and cared for her was awesome. I have to say I thought it would be a clear cut story but this author threw me a few curves! The way she told the story was so cool. I really loved it till the end. There were laughs, tears, anger, sadness...the whole gambit of emotions. Would definitely recommend this for anyone that loves fairy tales and real life. This series had the whole thing and more.

It gets four stars because I was intrigued and could not wait to finish up this story. What a great re-telling of Snow White with a twist. I really did enjoy it and recommend it for those who love fairy tales that are retold.

That said, the ending to this story (since there are 4 volumes in one book) rushed up quickly. I felt like there was so much build up, history, and story to what was going to happen...then it happened in about 4 pages. It was kind of a let down which is why this lost a star.

I loved who she ended up with, but I wish we would have gotten a bit more to the story.

Not your old Snow White

Not your old Snow White

I loved the blood and snow series. it has the perfect twist for my favorite fairytale. The stories are short and perfect for a quick read. They are not like any other books I've read. All the characters are easy to relate to, whether you love or hate them. Human or not this tale of Snow White is easily addictive and impossible to give an inside glimpse on without possibly spoiling the story.

Ughhhh. This was a frustrating series! It didn't end the way I wanted, but I'm not mad. Instead I feel slightly unsatisfied. You know how you get a craving, but you can't quite figure out what it is. So you go in search for what you think it is, eat it, and the craving still doesn't go away. It is like no matter what you eat it is not satisfying enough even though it tastes delicious. That sums up how I feel about this series. It never quite hit the mark for me, but it was damn good anyways.

Well this is over and I finally got my answers! I was surprised at some things for sure. There's more books from this world and of course I'm gonna have to check them out now lol. All in all I really enjoyed these books and I'm glad I read them. Snow was a pretty cool heroine. I'm glad it ended the way it did.

I did really like the out come of these books. I wouldn't say they are well written but the plot and the story line are very interesting. If more editing would have been done in this series then I would have given the books 5 stars each but since you had to do some mental editing while reading I knocked it down a bit.

I really enjoyed this whole series. It's a very entertaining version of Snow White. I like how other familiar characters are also included. There was a lot of action and everything was addressed nicely at the end. The author does have a series for Cinderella but I don't think I will be reading them anytime soon just because I have a huge to read list as it is!

All & all an interesting re-telling of the story but I was very disappointed in the ending. It felt like it was too quick & rushed. And without giving away anything, all I can really say is that I felt the ending was...well...absurd.

These additions to this series were great. I wish there had been more detail, and in the end I thought things were rather too easy. But overall things ended as I liked... or maybe they have just begun

Hard to put down

I really enjoyed this series. I found Snows inner dialog to be irritating at times. However, the story was fast paced and kept me wanting more. I finished all twelve volumes in four days and would have liked for the story to continue.

I hope to see more to the Blood and Snow series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and although it ended well, I could really enjoy reading more. I might just have to check out Cindy's story. What a thoroughly delightful series! Thank you RaShelle!

I went out of town and left my kindle at home and I refused to read on my phone.
When I got home I jumped back into reading Snow. It's a fun read that fills me with joy. I loved the ending and hope there are more books. Enjoy!

Fun read. Moves well. Is interesting.

Definitely a light easy read. The characters are engaging. Rewriting of and interplay of various fairytales throughout the storyline is quirky.
