"Daddy did it," says seven-year-old Amber Pyle. She's a rape victim, the worst her nurse, Sophia Burgess, can imagine. But, unlike her murdered mother and little brother, Amber might survive. Detective Ray Stone, Sophia's live-in boyfriend, is assigned the case and is more distressed than usual over the hideous crime, but he won't say why. As a former cop, Sophia is suspicious by nature. She may have left the force after getting shot, but she kept her independent outlook, keen mind, and adventurous nature--and she kept her sassy attitude, too. At odds with Ray over the secrets he keeps, Sophia investigates and ends up face-to-face with a murderer.
A former cop and now a nurse, Sophia isn’t happy when her police detective boyfriend won’t talk about his past. Ray has a personal connection to a recent murder case that makes her question his judgement. The deeper she digs, the more concerned she becomes. Did Ray knowingly help convict an innocent man who went to jail for murder? Or was he duped? Later he brought forth a witness whose testimony freed the guy. Now the man is on the loose, and he might have killed again. His wife and son are found murdered and the daughter raped. She claims “daddy” did it. Is the released criminal at fault? And how is Ray’s ex-wife involved? The closer Sophia gets to the truth, the further she pushes Ray away. But if she can’t trust the detective, she can’t be a part of his life. This solid whodunit will keep you guessing until the end.
I'm so glad that I read these books "in order of publication". Illegally Dead to Imperfect Contract to Imperfect Daddy. What a tremendous improvement in writing! After reading Imperfect Contract, I really wanted to spend more time with characters Sophia Burgess and Ray Stone. The 2nd book in the series is very good and does not disappoint! Also to clarify, each book in the 'series' may be read independently as a stand-alone. The copy editing has been addressed which further delights me as a reader and as a former copy editor. Now, I'm actually hoping the author will continue pursuit of her craft and continue with this mystery series. Had I not purchased all three (3) books at one time or read them in this order, I don't know that I would have had the same interest to continue with her work.
