What would happen if you sat down to dinner with the likes of Alicia Keyes, Jonathan Safran Foer, David Lynch, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley, Alton Brown, Neil Gaiman, Deepak Chopra and David Foster Wallace? Fascinating conversation, without doubt, and one of the things that all these folks have in common is that they practice gratitude and have a lot to say about it. These thinkers and luminaries included in The Grateful Table make this a thoroughly modern book of blessings, both heartfelt and deeply profound.
Saying grace is one of our loveliest traditions and one that has stood the test of time for good reason - it simply feels wonderful. Whether holding hands and praying to the heavens above or waxing poetic about the bounty of food, these blessings turn any group of people into family, connected by the power of gratitude. Compiled by the editor of and collaborator on the runaway bestseller Attitudes of Gratitude , Brenda Knight has employed the practice of gratitude for years. The Grateful Table is not your grandmother's book of graces. Filled with fresh voices and contemporary expressions, this book of blessings will make every occasion more meaningful.
Such a lovely little collection of beautiful quotes! My favorite was this gem from Og Mandino:
"Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness, and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again."
I'll be keeping this beautiful book by my bedside to remind myself to be grateful for everything that I have every single day. It's hard to stay positive when you haven't had your coffee yet, but this little book is just that good.
I’ll never be done reading this book, and I couldn’t be happier about that. I like to savor one or two quotes from it a day, anymore than that and they start to run together. Hard not to read more than that, but trust me - this one is best one bite at a time !

People always talk about developing an “attitude of gratitude”. Around Thanksgiving people countdown what they’re thankful for on Facebook, at the Thanksgiving dinner table they recount what they’re thankful for, or at the least take a moment count their blessings. Perhaps during Christmas while making charitable donation people spare a thought of gratitude that they’re not the ones in need this holiday season. Yet I would guess that’s the extent of gratitude the average person or family shares in a year.
What if there are was a way to exercise your gratitude muscles on a daily basis? Enter “The Grateful Table: Blessing, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal” by Brenda Knight.
Brenda Knight is on a mission to bring more happiness, more joy, and more gratitude to people’s lives. With her book, “The Grateful Table”, each day you’ll find a different quote from a wide variety of people, ranging from Neil Gaiman to Elizabeth Edwards and Ray Bradbury to Saint Issac of Ninevah. The author hopes you’ll gather around the table and share these daily thoughts until you start to feel that gratefulness every day.
Now as you know, with all things like this, I always check out my birthday for the example to share. So May 29th is “Thank you for the reflection of Your Smile in all we see.” – Kenneth Kurtz.
Who is Kenneth Kurtz? Honestly, I’ve got no clue. I emailed a couple of publicists, they had no clue. Googled Kenneth Kurtz, got a handful of results, none of them seemed right. So dear Magical Buffet readers, if you know who Kenneth Kurtz is, let all of us know in the comments!
Until then, perhaps you should consider “The Grateful Table”. A beautiful little book to help you be thankful all year round.
Just to let you know *I was given a copy of this book to read and review*. This is my honest review.
This book and I have a little bit of a serendipitous meeting. In December I was thinking about what my word of the year should be, and decided on "Gratitude". I then went searching for books on the topic. I saw this book listed on the giveways and entered. When I won, I knew I had chosen the correct word for 2014.
All that said, this is a book of quotes. The quotes are arranged to have one for each day of the year. Some are very short, some are long. Ranging from religious to Pop music authors, they are all reminders to be grateful. I find the quotes very inspiring. I have read all of them and am now just reading the one assigned to each day as a little reminder to be grateful. I think it is a lovely book.
A collection of thoughts, prayers, affirmations, and graces from a variety of writers, poets, musicians, religious leaders, etc from all walks of life and religious philosophies. I listened to this book on Audible and can't recommend it. The narrator spoke so quickly, and with an over-abundance of zeal, it was almost like she was reading a shopping list under the influence! She went so quickly that it was hard to digest the content. I suggest it would be better to read this material in book format so that you can evaluate what's being said... think about it for a moment.
