Celtic Knots: The Ties That Bind

Rate this book
After an irate young woman confronts her father and his mistress, the entire family suffers disastrous consequences. Set in Northern Ireland, between two world wars, and amidst violent religious tension, the family deals with personal tragedy, death, betrayal, lust and forbidden love. Their hard-won triumph remains not only a testimony to their love, sacrifice, loyalty, and courageous defiance in the face of religious persecution-the story is above all a testimony of the indestructible Irish will to survive.

I truly enjoyed reading about Irish history and its culture from this book and how religion has been so influential to the people and country of Ireland. I did find Lucy a bit aggravating at times and I could live with that; however, the ending just had me baffled. I wanted to know what happened to this family that I had been reading about. I would love to rate this book higher, but I was too disappointed with the ending.

The author just stops. This book needed at least another 50 pages. She just stops. Not all loose ends have to be tied up but shouldn't there be some kind of denouement? The jarringly abrupt ending colored my pleasant opinions on this sweet, simple book about an Irish family facing hardships just after WWI.

Celtic Knots is a beautifully woven story of the strife of living in Northern Ireland with heartbreaking family drama. A love story that started out on shaky grounds with their differences in religion that didn't seem to stand a chance of surviving. A page turner that I didn't want to put down. I'm looking forward to Ms. Nicholson's next novel!

Great book, very layered content. There are cultural, religious and familial threads that are woven together to form a rich tapestry of the lives of an Irish family in transition...

I truly enjoyed this book, particularly how the author writes in brogue. I often found myself reading out loud. The sisters were so devoted to each other and to family. I look forward to a sequel.
