Based on the BBC television series, this dramatisation was written especially for Radio 4. "Roj Blake may be gone but the ragged band of rebels he united are still fighting for their lives and the ruthless criminal Avon now leads them against the tyrannical forces of the Federation"--Container.
Barry Letts was a British actor, television director, writer and producer. He was most associated with the television series Doctor Who for many years, with active involvement in the television series from 1967 to 1981, and later contributions to its spin-offs in other media.
Oh, this was really nice, right from the moment the theme song starts. Close your eyes and sink back into your armchair to fully absorb this one, because you've just found a new episode starring the original cast. A BBC radio drama set after Roj has left the Liberator with a plot that is just as quirky as any of the TV episode stories.
A perfectly classic scenario with all the old traps, there's nothing particularly new about it. Avon has an unsettling dream that he feels was too real to be just a dream, so he decides to take the gang directly into the path of danger in search of answers. Slave (Liberator's flight computer) and Orac (the supercomputer AI) are in fine form and you can also expect to "see" Servalan dominating everything in her path.
There is one definite surprise in store, the resolution involves an uncharacteristic decision but I can say no more about that.
I hope to find many more of these (if they exist) because I loved it. Even the actors seemed to put a lot more energy into this than I typically expect from an audiodrama. (I reckon Darrow was quite happy to be the show's lead). I would like to see the stories get a little more imaginative without the constraint of a TV SFX budget. But otherwise, this might be the first time I've 5-starred an audiodrama!
