Thank you to Valentine PR and Skye Warren for the arc!
This book had a little bit of everything. There was a suspenseful element that had you wondering why this Cirque de Miroirs wasn’t all that meets the eye, and why our fmc, Sienna, was so standoffish.
I think that this book could have benefited greatly from a longer start. We immediately jump into things, which does a great job of drawing you in and making this mysterious girl intrigue you and wonder what all is going on in her town.
A lot of the dialogue felt very stilted and unnatural and there were at least two points in the book where I was flipping back a page or two because it felt like I had missed something in the text that could explain why we were talking about what we were talking about. There was even a point where I had wondered if they had forgotten to add a page or two into the arc.
Logan, our mmc, fell very flat for me. He was meant to be mysterious, but rather than feeling like that i felt like he was very one dimensional and really only thought of her as hot and for some reason wanted to house her?
The story goes on with Sienna having some trouble in her very small “everyone knows everyone” type of hometown and Logan is meant to help her escape that whilst also explaining to her that bullies are everywhere. Part of what adds to this is it seems like nobody at this circus likes her and they all want her gone for one reason or another, and it did make me wonder why not a single person there was friendly to her.
There was a lot of repeated information throughout the book that I think was meant to serve as reminders to the reader, and maybe the issue is that I read this over 2 days or maybe it’s because the length is pretty short, but I found that I didn’t really need these reminders and was wondering if there was an error in the text.
Logan’s dirty talk to Sienna seemingly comes out of nowhere and I unfortunately didn’t feel much tension. Logan would say outrageously sexual things to Sienna what felt like out of the blue and Sienna’s responses rather than feeling like banter felt more dismissive. Which would make sense if she was genuinely not interested in anything, but then they’d be doing sexual things and it felt like a double take moment for me where I was like, “When did THIS happen?”
This book ends on a cliffhanger that felt very far fetched for me. I’m all for farfetched billionaire cinderella stories, but somehow in this middle of nowhere on a long road these people happened to drive past at the exact right time.
Overall, there was a story there full of mystery and intrigue, but it didn’t hit home for me. This is one of those books that if someone asked me to share my thoughts I’d have to say it wasn’t for me. I’d like to think that maybe I just missed something here. Maybe misread an important paragraph that would’ve made it all make sense. But unfortunately it came across as discombobulated and unsure.
I would’ve liked to see more of Sienna and her role with the circus, and maybe manage to make one friend (besides the grumpy cook). And more of Logan honestly, it feels like he really only popped up at very random times and we didn’t really get to see much of why Logan cares for her.
