They’re coming. Monsters Three. It’s Monsters Night and they’re after me. One has claws. One has fangs. The third is terror incarnate, and it’s me he’ll claim.
I said the curse. Three names of Blood.
A dedication. A desecration.
Nemmus. Nefarus. And Nood.
I wanted my enemies dead.
I wanted revenge.
It was Monsters Night and it sounded like a fun game.
Except no one is left laughing—no one except the monsters in my head.
The question is, did I imagine them?
Or perhaps… I’m the one who’s dead?
My Monsters Three came for me.
They need my nightmares. They need my rage. They feed on everything that makes me who I am… and now all those who crossed me will pay.
USA Today Bestselling Author J.R. Thorn is a Reverse Harem Romance author. All her books are written in the same world except for co-write books, so be sure to check out the recommended reading order listed above or on the website! (She'll also admit to having an unhealthy obsession with magical tattoos and alpha males.)
3⭐ Genre ~ fantasy ~ monster ~ paranormal Series ~ Monsters Night #2 Publication date ~ book ~ July 23, 2024, audio ~ May 27, 2025 Est Page Count ~ 514 (45 chapters +e) & some bonus scenes Audio length ~ 10 hours 48 minutes Narrator ~ Shane East, Zara Hampton-Brown, Gregory Salinas, Troy Duran, Brandon Francis, Kale Williams, Michael Gallagher POV ~ multiple 1st Featuring ~ arranged marriage, dream realm, vampires, blood, mates, MM, MMFM, reverse harem, why choose, some steamage
I'll start off by saying this is not my typical genre, and I mean all of them ~ fantasy, monsters and paranormal, but I didn't hate it.
Scarlett is forced to blood sign a contract because her mother is ill and her father needs the money the arranged marriage will bring. Cain is the king and a dream eater.
Sabre is a prince in his world and in a secret relationship with Cage ~ both are vampires.
Most of the book takes place in a dream realm. That's where most of the steamage is, too, which did make it somewhat of a slow burn before they meet. It was hard to decipher between dream and reality. I didn't really mind any of the main characters, but I wanted more from them together in the real world quite honestly.
From what I gather some of these characters were introduced in another book, so I hate that I feel like I missed what's the what and who's the who.
Overall, as I said I didn't hate it, and I'm glad I have it a whirl because you never know unless you try. Also, happy I listened because I probably wouldn't have been as interested had I read it as it seems way too long for me.
Narration notes: Whoop whoop for a full cast narration in duet form 🙌 They all did great! Every dual/multi POV audio should be like this!
Series notes: This is a shared world multi author series and I'm not sure how other books in the series tie in. There were some bonus scenes from this author and other author's books. This is in the audio version, not sure if in the book, too.
So it took me a while to wrap my head around what was reality , what was a dream… where the hell they were , and then the book finished…
This was a first for me, I don’t know whether monsters are my thing, even with the vibrating bulbs 😅 It wasn’t bad, but I’m not rushing to read anything similar ya know?
I’m so disappointed that I didn’t enjoy this book more. I love the world and I like the characters, but this entire book is setup for the main characters to get together. They finally meet in person (with literally 20 minutes left in the book) and then it’s all over. I got to know the villain more in this story than I did two of the main guys.
There’s no opportunity for this book to ever be a romance because there’s almost no interactions between Scarlett and the MMCs. They’re fated mates and are feeling attraction because of that, but it’s really unsatisfying because we don’t get to see any real connection or a deeper relationship between them at all.
I also don’t understand how things resolved… there were several big issues that basically ended with “I don’t care about that anymore, let someone else handle it”. I don’t really feel like we got a solid explanation for what Scarlett is, and it seems like it’s pointless that she’s the Sigil? Maybe there’s more books to come that will resolve these issues (or it’s already handled in other series?), but it feels like a cop-out and rushed ending right now.
This book was so disappointing for me. There was no character development, let alone any relationship development. And it dragged that I had to force myself to finish it.. there was sooo much promise and a lot of interesting concepts. It just missed the mark for me.
Their Blood Queen is J.R. Thorn’s contribution to the Monster Night series and is a great, lengthy read❣️
Cain is the Elite King of his sector, when a well to do family asks him to provide blood to approve a blood contract with another Elite family, to merge them via a 30 day courtship. Unbeknownst to Cain, this sets off a chain reaction whereby the female bound to the blood contract is his potential mate😳 But his dream eater is out of control and he knows he will require another one or two mates to help him control his Monster if he wants to be with Scarlett. A good thing Cage and Sabre hear their Sigil’s call from their realm☺️
Scarlett is yet again a pawn in her families dealings and coerced into a blood contract that she doesn’t want to be in, all because her mother has taken ill. But it soon becomes clear not everything is as it seems and her nightmares might prove to be more real than she at first though😉
This story was a little more complex than I expected which took me a little time to get my head around, but I enjoyed it all the same. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review😍
I dual read the book with the audio, and let me tell you, it was perfection. the narrators, there are 8 of them!, were amazing. They really brought this story to life. You had different voices for each character, and even in the chapters, which were multi POV, they each voices their own characters. I loved the immersion.
Onto the story! I loved the FMC. She does what she has to in order to try and protect her mother. The monster MMCs, you get 3, have all been waiting forever for their mate to come along. I loved each of their different personalities. I love the fated mates aspect, the world building. Just everything, really.
This is my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last.
It seems I have a different opinion then other reviews left, and mine may have been different had I read the book vs listening to the audio book. That being said, this is the BEST audio book I have ever listened to. These narrators are the best I’ve heard. Audio books tend to put me to sleep, but with so many different ones in this book it kept me fully invested and involved in the story. No sleeping on this one!
While I wish we had more of their all together story, I’m sure there will be more to come in the next book and I can’t wait to read it!
Holy New Books Batman!! This is part of the Monster's Night series and it's one of my favorite books J.R. Thorn has written. The storyline is really well built and easy to follow, even though it i corporates a few characters from the other books. Looove these mates! Cain, Sabre and Cage have the same kind of dark that has been hidden in Scarlett for a long time. Did I mention that Cage, Sabre and Cain are all vampires?! 🥵
I will mention to check out the trigger warnings, knowing full well that makes this book a ONE-CLICK buy for a lot of y'all, lol. But for those that use and need the trigger warnings, please check them out before you read this book. Yes, there is spice!! It's monster spice.. that should say it all! But there is also a fantasticly written story of 4 people finding what they need in this mate circle, and fighting for it. I loved it.. you should read it. I can't wait for the audiobook to come out! Oh, last note, there is some MM in this one so it's a MMFM reverse harem. In no way does it take away from Scarlett being the focus and anchor in the mate circle, just adds to the dynamics. Okay, now go get it!!
It was just bland, lifeless. I finished it in a day because work was slow, and I just wanted it to be done. I should have just DNF'd. There wasn't a ton of real connection between the FMC and the MMCs. They only meet in dreams, and just for smexing. The setting was vague AF, and so was the descriptions of the MMCs. They have monstrous forms. OK. What's monstrous about them? Their size, skin, textures, horns? Cain is a Dream Eater. OK. What does a Dream Eater look like? Nothing but vague notions about some horns (no placement, color, size), teeth, claws and huge size. Cain could look like Rawhead Rex and we wouldn't know it. I'm literally just imagining him like Rawhead Rex now. I can't tell you if that makes it worse or better. The lack of fleshed out visualizations of the monstrous MMCs feels like a cop out. It feels like the author wrote it, thought, I'll figure out what they look like later, and later never got written in. The only characters that are described in any kind of detail are the FMC and Helia, queen of the Monster City - who's in about 2% of the book. Also, 'Monster City', wow. It all just felt very low-effort.
I did enjoy this book, but I think that I would have enjoyed it more if Sabre and Cage were in it more. They didn't really become part of the story until the last part of the book, and considering that they were two characters that interested me from the moment that they first walked onto the page in Lexi's book, I was looking forward to seeing more of them. Even still, I enjoyed the book, and I thought it was a great, fun time, even if Scarlett didn't think so. I'd be confused as hell in her shoes as well, so I can understand why she thought her mates were just figments of her imagination.
All in all, this series of 3 interconnected standalones was great and I enjoyed my time reading them.
Dnf’d at 61% when 2/4 of the group HANDT EVEN MET YET what is the point of having three love interests if you have no interest in writing the other two lovers? Legit there was a whole chapter dedicated to the bad guy but we STILL have no meeting between the full group 61% in?? I really wanted to like this bc I loved the first one but this get like an overall confusing entry, like all of the worldbuilding for the entire series was shoved into this one book and the plot/love interests are just lightly there to keep it in the romance genre. Skipping to the third hoping it’s MILES better than this:(
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read this on KU while listening to the audiobook, and I am UNWELL! What am I supposed to do with my life now?! I didn't even realize how consumed I was by the audiobook/ebook until I got to the end.
The narrators did such a great job of bringing the story to life, and it felt like it could even be a movie if you let your brain wander just a bit! :D
THEY USED WHAT FOR LUBE?! (iykyk)
If you like audiobooks, dream eater vibes, monsters, Why-choose with MM content included (It was HOT and detailed to the perfect level for me), amazing writing, and voice narration - LET THIS BE THE ONE YOU GET!!!! Check out the content warnings before you dive, but definitely give it a shot. The vulnerability in the characters, even through their 'monster' was perfect and each character was unique. Oh what it'd be like to be loved by them <3
I'd highly recommend an immersive read. I don't know how I waited so long to read this!
Spice: 4/5 Plot: 5/5 Characters: 4.5/5 Overall: Loved it, inhaled it, and I can't wait to see what is next. I will be checking out JR's work because this was truly great. #topshelfsmut
NOTE: I received an ALC and this is my own honest and unapologetic review - Thank you!
I really enjoyed this full-cast audiobook. The use of a full-cast really made it that much more enjoyable and I look forward to listening to these narrators in the future. The book was good. I really enjoyed that the majority of the book took place in dreams and that I didn't anticipate the twist. I also enjoyed the why choose relationship dynamic within this book and how much the monsters worship the FMC.
I received a gifted copy. This review is honest and voluntary.
Zero regrets for popping my monster romance cherry with this FULL CAST audiobook. Apparently this is a part of an interconnected series by multiple authors, my bad 😅 I did not feel like I was missing anything until the bonus scenes though!
If you are a fan of monster romances (or are monster curious) this is a fun one to start with. It is why choose, fated mates, political, and so much! I rated this one 3.5 stars.
"Their Blood Queen" is a vampire/monster paranormal romance that takes place well into the future in a world where humans and monsters co-exist. The characters reference certain villages once being called Chicago and New York, so the reader can only assume that this takes place well into the future anyway. The book also gives off old world vibes. The way to get ahead in this world and eventually rise to the immortality district is through connections and a point system based on offerings to the monsters on what is called Monster Night. The FMC (Scarlett) finds herself being forced to entertain a courtship to form a connection for her family and to save her mother. But what those around her don't know about her is that when she dreams, she is transported to the Dream Realm and has a great deal of power that she has yet to discover. In this Dream Realm, she meets her monsters, Cain, Sabre, and Cage - who know beyond a doubt that she is their mate. Now they just have to figure out how to get to her and for her to escape her courtship. This is a MMFM reverse harem story and there is no other woman drama (OWD) and the book ends in a HEA.
When the dedication is is this fantastic - "You always see through their masks. The men who wear suits and have pretty smiles. But you know what they really are. You don’t just choose the bear. You choose the monster." - right off the bat, you know the author is a girls girl. And it's further proved with this particular quote from the book that really hit home, especially given how shitty everything is right now: "The villages fear the monsters, and the Elites do, too. But I fear men most of all." I think any level headed woman feels this way. I would choose the monsters too.
While this had a lot of great elements; a feisty FMC, "touch her and die" kind of mates, unique monster dicks, decent enough plot with drama and suspense, I didn't like it as much as I thought that I would. The aspect of the Dream Realm versus other worlds versus real life was pretty confusing to me and I don't know that I ever really had a grasp on the different realms and how they got to them. And for a smutty book, it took a very long time for Scarlett's mates to get to her and for the group to finally be together. I would have liked to have seen more of them after all the drama had passed. So for me, this book was just okay. I would still recommend it if you like paranormal romances, just go in with the expectation that you won't see a lot of the group together.
Really wanted to love this book because I love this universe and the story so far, but this one was so confusing. A lot of the time I don’t understand the motivation and then there’s like limitless powers and suddenly there’s not.
There was for me, one psychologically deeply disturbing scene that I had to skip through, but then it was resolved so easily that it was like why did it happen in the first place?
There’s parts that are totally nonsensical and a lot of the book feels like it was written in packets that were than peace together to make the story, but it doesn’t quite transition.
Looking forward to the last couple in the world that I’ve haven’t read and I’m hoping they’re better than this one. I feel like this one could’ve been good, but it just kind of missed the mark.
What a cast - the audiobook is a solid recommend from me as I love all of these narrators. Zara Hampton-Brown is great as the wide eyed Scarlett who is ready to sacrifice everything to help her mother and Shane East is the perfect growly Apex Alpha, Cain.
The narration really made the book for me as although I did enjoy the world building and the courting customs which were a unique idea, I struggled a little with the characters. Scarlett was a good FMC; I liked how she quietly started embracing her darkness rather than being a total damsel waiting to be rescued. Cain was definitely the most developed of the leads while Sabre and Cage felt a little tacked on and I didn't feel that connection as much as I did with Cain: I could easily have seen this as an M/F to be honest. I loved Sabre and Cage's relationship as well as their backstory but felt they were almost an adjacent plotline separate to Scarlett's as they didn't spend a lot of on page time together. I felt I knew more about Edward's character overall; his plotline was one of my favourites as this was a really good twist on the arranged marriage trope. I was rooting for him (until I wasn't) but his mother was awful. Her scene with Scarlett towards the end was hard to listen to and I was surprised that it wasn't revisited towards the end as it was brutal.
The bonus epilogues have set up the next book and although these are standalone stories, they are interconnected with some cameos from other characters. I'd like to go back and read book one as although it didn't lessen my engagement, I wanted to know more about the ones I did meet.
My interpretation of the star system; 3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again 4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series 5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
The third book in the Monsters Night series is J.R. Thorn's Their Blood Queen and it was everything! It's kinda like Bridgerton meets Monster romance. There's a caste society luxurious homes, fancy parties, oh, and marriage contracts. In the previous two books, one centered on a monster realm while the other centered on a village. It's interesting to see things from the Elite City perspective. We get to see how the monster cities are run and I get a better understanding of this world. Man this system is beyond flawed, there needs to be an uprising cause crap ain't right.
There are also a few familiar faces which I greatly enjoyed. This book fills in the gaps left by the previous books. Some scenes in this book were from before the series even started, I got to see how the characters got to the start of the previous books, while also answering questions about a few characters I was dying to know more about, one of those characters being Cain. I thought he was in control and had his crap together but seeing Cain fumble I can admit I was wrong. All the Monsters Night stories converged in this one, and it was awesome.
I've always loved stories with dream worlds and TBQ deliveries. There are dark monsters, sinister shadows, lustful dreams, and more. I enjoy it when the lines between dream and reality blur for the characters. Thorn has created a dark and seductive dream world that I just fell into. The mirror magic was unexpected but I enjoyed that aspect of the story it reminded me of when I was a kid and imagined mirrors were portals.
Their Blood Queen was a dark delight. I freaking loved this book. Heck, I loved this series and I'm hoping I don't have to say goodbye just yet and that maybe more books are coming. One can dream.
Scarlet is bound by a blood contract to marry a man she doesn’t really know. Because of this contract, her nightmares begin to feel more realistic. In them, she meets three new monsters who are all searching for their mates. As things unfold, she becomes conflicted about her own feelings and starts questioning what’s real and what isn’t. Are these monsters just part of her dreams, or could they actually exist?
I listened to this as an audiobook. Thanks to J.R. Thorn and her team, I received a copy of Their Blood Queen to review. I feel like this audio book makes the book much more engaging, as this was a huge strenght to keep me hooked on the story. The voice actors did an amazing job with the characters, and I honestly believe I liked them more because of how well they were performed.
The spicy scenes were surprisingly well done. I'm usually not a fan of listening to that kind of thing since it’s often awkward or poorly written, but luckily that wasn’t the case here. Still, I definitely looked around in the train hoping no one could hear what I was listening to. A monster going down on a human girl in her dreams is not something I want blasting through my headphones in public.
One downside for me was how little we saw of the other two mates until pretty late in the book. The pacing felt off and dragged at times. I would’ve loved more of Saber and Cage. They just didn’t get enough chapters or development compared to the others.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Even though Saber and Cage didn’t get the attention they deserved, the story still kept me engaged. I’m pretty sure I would’ve DNF’d it if I had read the ebook, so I really recommend the audiobook version for this one.
Also, just a heads up: this is part of a multi-author universe. From what I gathered in the bonus scenes, Their Blood Queen is connected to the Monster Night series, which involves other authors too. I haven’t read the others, so I can’t say much about that part, but I think this book stands well on its own.
So to finish of my ramble about this book. I recommend this book for all the monster lovers out there, but also if you appreciate a good acted out book.
4.25 ⭐️ 4 🔥 Paranormal Romantasy Why Choose Regency Vibes Dreamwalkers Vampiric Like Monsters Different Worlds Mates Royal Family Politics Even though this is book 2 of the Monster’s Night series, this is the last one I’ve read. && I saved the best for last! I really enjoy being in this immense universe that J.R. Thorn & Lexi C. Foss have created. Mila Young was also a good edition with her book Their Little Monster featured in this series. Both Thorn & Lexi have other series & books that are in this universe that I have also really enjoyed! This book specifically is about Scarlett, a human that was adopted into an Elite family from one of the villages. Unfortunately, Scarlett’s mother is very ill & this Elite family is on the cusp of collapse & even death in this Elite city. Her father & brother have arranged a blood sworn courtship for Scarlett & the Duke of one of the most esteemed Elite families, that will provide them with the much needed currency & medicine for her mother. Scarlett was actually meant to be a sacrifice for Monster’s Night, since she was born in one of the villages where these genetically modified humans live that are meant to be mates for these monsters. Scarlett is plagued with nightmares & is finding herself in a dream world, with what she believes are figments of her imagination. But they feel so right, while her betrothed feels wrong & seems too good to be true. The regency vibes, with the courtship & politics, mixed with this paranormal/monstrous world they have created kept me entertained & flipping the pages! I can’t wait to see what else these authors bring to this universe!!
Thank you J.R. Thorn for the ARC! Thank you for allowing be to be apart of the Monster’s Night ARC team!
This was such an entertaining audiobook. I loved the full cast narrative. It kept me fully engaged and had me clinging to the storyline.
Our FMC, Scarlett is forced by her father and brother to sign a blood contract into an arranged marriage with a Duke of one of the Elite families. This marriage is to move up their family status and reestablish their wealth since Scarlett’s father pretty much bankrupted them due to her mother’s illness. Scarlett’s recurrent nightmares have her wondering what’s real and what’s not. Then we have Cain, one of the MMC is the king and is a dream eater. The other two MMCs, Sabre and Cage are vampires in a different world. Cain, Sabre and Cage are all looking for their mates. This story is complex with different layers. Some even taking part in dream worlds. I was fascinated by the world building and detail given. Such a unique story.
I was intrigued by the plot as well as all the characters. The author did a remarkable job with her writing which easily immerses you into the storyline. The narrators were phenomenal bringing the story to life! I love this was in duet form. One of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to. 4.5/5
Narrators: Shane East, Zara Hampton-Brown, Gregory Salinas, Troy Duran, Kale Williams, Michael Gallagher, Samantha Brentmoor, and Brandon Francis. 5⭐️
This book was really good, the plot was intriguing, the characters fascinating and the politics were nerve wracking. I will admit that the book felt slow at times but that could just be the fact that all I wanted was to read more about Cain, Sabre, and Cage as well as Scarlette but a good chunk of it is about the time with Edward's family and the political standing and games they had. The characters are what kept me reading because Cain grabbed my attention when I was reading Their Lethal Pet and I just knew I had to read his story. Well worth it as long as you keep pushing through what I thought was slow parts. Also, for some odd reason, I bought the ebook and on the Kindle app you get two extra epilogues but when I read the same book on my kindle paperwhite those two bonus chapters weren't there. Don't know what happened and I only saw they were there by accident.
