Psychology of the privileged? Yep!
Pepper Pace didn’t just write a sci‑fi about aliens she dropped us into a world where privilege struts around blind to everyone else’s reality. The Exchange ceremony? A glittering stage for the wealthy and white, while the poor and marginalized are locked out, erased, or reduced to stereotypes.
What makes this book sing is how seamlessly Pace threads racism, classism, and prejudice into the fabric of her futuristic world. It’s not just about humans vs. aliens it’s about who gets to belong, who gets erased, and how privilege speculates about lives it refuses to understand.
The writing is sharp, the undertones are rich, and the social commentary hits hard without ever slowing the story down. It’s artful, engaging, and thoughtful and yes, I’m already on to book 2

Even better than I remember
The world appears as it quickly moving towards this dystopian future, but unlike Karma and the others, there's no one coming to save us.
Karma has had a hard life and is willing and prepared to do whatever she needs to in order to survive. I probably should say more about the actual book but I don't feel like I can do it properly with spoiling it for someone.
I originally read this as a Vella installment. It was good before but seems even better now. I know what happens but this second read is giving clarity. The author says there are no changes, only edits/corrections, but there are some things that I don't remember. I probably wasn't as thorough on my initial pass. Or the passage of time could be the issue. Usually on a reread I scan over some of the less interesting parts. I have done no scanning thus far. I am very much enjoying it all over again.

This was my second Pepper Pace novel. I now understand I am not the target audience for Pepper Pace. I love a good alien romance and the concept for this sounded good. I know this started off as a Kindle Vella serial, but I had high hopes for this one. I ended up DNF'ing it after 60% into the audiobook. The MFC, Karma, was annoying. To me she felt self-righteous, inconsistent, and intolerable. It appeared she could criticize and judge others, but when her flaws were pointed out she did nothing to correct them. The MMC asked her several times to talk to him or their companion about the correct protocol or help her with something she didn't know about the exchange program. In the 60% I listened to she only did that when it was to her benefit. She reached out to the fellow consorts only get something from them for herself. After that she didn't have much to do with them. I understood she wanted to help those less fortunate, however, she could have learned to do it in a manner that was not going against protocol instead of blaming others for being socially blind. I felt there were several teachable moments for her to explain about humans and Earth, but she just made assumptions. The intimate scenes I listened to before I quit were probably a 3/10 for me.
If you like novels about social injustice, social change, and cultural differences with a smattering of romance thrown in this alien novel is for you. If you prefer alien romance with more romance or erotica, skip this one.

Karma was living in survival mode. Her chance to get out of the poverty she lived by being forced to take the place of a consort was a no-brainer. If she refused, she would be dead, so she leaped at the chance. It was an eye-opening event for Karma. Her mated Galatian consort Rafe Sigur also learned some things from her. They both learned from each other. Rafe learned that the Galatain Consort exchange was riffed with embezzlement and poor management. Karma was just thrown into the consortium and had to learn from the bottom. Her relationship with sister consort Madeline proved to be helpful. All in all, Karma never forgot where she came from and was determined to share her fortune with the poor. But there are many things that both Rafe and Karma have to learn about each other's culture.
NOTE I first read this story through Kindle Vella. I am glad the author is making it available in ebook form. The narrators for the audible book, Simone Rothschild and Steven Jay Cohen did an excellent job of making the story come to life. I'm looking forward to future books.

Looking back, my perspective has changed fundamentally, both in how I see the world and in what kind of content I consume. I can't see myself ever picking up a book like this ever again.
I used to be an atheist. I rejected God because of various things that had happened in my life. When it came to human struggles, injustice, suffering and death, I had my own views on these things. Today, I understand why they exist. Looking back, I don't just find it convincing, I find it almost self evident.
For me, my entire life changed in 2025. I see my life as having a "pre 2025" and a "post 2025."
It all started with a prayer from the Kreupasanam Church. At my sister's request, I reluctantly agreed to pray for 90 days as part of a covenant. For anyone curious, there's a newsletter with testimonies here. The covenant itself is free, and just to be clear, the covenant is with God.
Last year, I also had a supernatural encounter. The covenant brought me closer to God, and shortly afterwards my sister had an apparition of Jesus. Everything that has happened since has only strengthened my faith.
Before this, I was generally supportive of the LGBTQ+ movement. I wasn't an activist, but I also didn't really see anything wrong with it. I didn't think much about the harm caused by abortion. I also had no real issue with New Age practices like witchcraft (mostly wiccan), manifestation, tarot, crystals, dreamcatchers, astral projection or energy healing (which are all linked to the occult and the demonic). I was largely fine with consuming pornography, as well as violence and sex in movies and books (getting into increasingly dark and twisted stories). I had a very "live and let live" attitude towards other religions and sexuality. Hey, if it doesn't affect me and nobody gets hurt, who cares? Can't all things be true? Isn't Jesus, Allah, the Source and the Universe somehow ...maybe... the same thing or leading to the same place?
Um, no.
I've come to realize that just because society tells us something is right doesn't make it right. The Bible warns about this very thing: "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil" (Isaiah 5:20). Just because something has become socially accepted, normalized or even celebrated doesn't mean it IS morally right.
Today, I have a completely different view on all of these things. It's like the scales have fallen from my eyes and I can finally see the truth.
Why?
Because there aren't "multiple" truths. There is ONE absolute truth. There is a moral standard, and that standard comes from God, from Jesus. Reading the Bible has opened my eyes more and more to what is right and what is wrong. Evil exists, just as good exists. Doing, saying, and consuming things that aren’t good for you and that in some ways glorify evil or bad behavior, have a way of chipping away at your core and normalizing it. That includes romanticizing demons, btw. And I really believe that, at the end of the day, it’s just not good or okay. It has this destructive effect on your soul. But more than that, it's a social contagion.
If you're reading this, I hope something in it clicks for you. Or maybe it simply makes you curious enough to start your own journey in search of the truth. Because in the end, that journey always leads to the same place.

Weakest book I've read by the author.
Perhaps because it's originally in serial form and the plot stretched even thinner? The editing is not good, there's lots of typos and errors which I can overlook.
But the author also repeatedly hit me over the head with her messages. The system is corrupt! The rich are greedy and evil! The poor are all innocent and abused! Galatian queens are selfish! Galatian warriors are protectors! It was all just so black and white.

I enjoyed this story very much!
I liked how there was action, suspense, how these characters changed and learned to talk to each other.
How the relationship grew from ritual to real heartfelt feelings for each other. And as much as I didn't like the other consorts, I did like that they became curious and listened to Karma.
Even the theme of racism showed up in this sci-fi fantasy. That surprised me, but when Rafe kind of answered her about it, it actually made sense and sounded so much like today! Actually, the racism was throughout the story! Not just where it was directly brought up.
I look forward to the next books, I hope I can read them all!

I really enjoyed The Galatian Exchange, Book One. The storyline was engaging and well paced, and the connection between Karma and Rafe felt genuine and emotionally grounded. The book includes a moderate amount of sex scenes that add to the tension and intimacy without completely overtaking the plot. The limitations to Karma and Rafe’s coupling was unique in this genre and heightened the anticipation and emotional stakes of their bond. Overall, the world-building and character development kept me invested, and the ending clearly sets the stage for Book Two. I’m definitely curious to see where the story goes next.

Karma Chambers is given a once in a lifetime chance to participate in the Galatian Exchange, not realizing how much her inclusion will change things. Rafe Sigur doesn’t really want to join the Exchange, but his last minute arrival gives him the most unique consort. Their joining is a true revelation.
I like what Pepper Pace is doing in this book because it’s such a marked change from what others have done. Race and corruption are factors in a way other authors generally would not have touched on, and the pacing really works.
If you like interspecies romance, arranged marriage/ marriage selection, and a little bit of intrigue, then this is for you.

This was so fun! I really enjoyed the start of Rafe and Karma’s story. Though Karma’s character felt inconsistent. She was snippy and nonchalant with her consort sisters, but very polite to Rafe, with random tantrums throughout. And yet she was a servant leader. Her character felt a bit all over the place. The world building and Galatian culture was interesting. Some parts moved too fast and lacked detail, others were fully fleshed out. It’s a 3.5 star for me!

I have been waiting for this story and it was worth the wait. Warrior aliens who are given human consorts after years of service protecting Earth and the complicated worlds they come from. Set far in the future, this world has been ravaged by a different alien race and then ravaged by greed. Engrossing reading! Highly recommend.

a refreshing new twist
I love a story that catches me unaware. The Galations is one of those books. The story engaged me from the beginning and I want to know where it’s going. Tge writing is great and engaging. Lots of hot smut and alien sex is an interesting addition. Off to read book 2. I hope it’s out.

This is a great series. I read it on Kindle Vella and just could not get enough of it. Every character played an integral part in the book. The story is told from a variety of POVs, each unique and on their own journey, but it all blended together seamlessly. I can't wait for more to be released.

First read by this author and I can’t be mad at it . Didn’t think I would be into an alien romance story but this is pretty good. I am intrigued and looking forward to what’s going to happen next because Karma and Rafe belong together and those queens need to be exposed along with all the other under handed business going on .

Loved it on vella and now in book form. I realize now that u mughtve gotten all the way to book 3 via vella, but I'm truly enjoying re-reading this story. Deceit, futuristic, alien/human interactions, spice, and people learning about each other...is all I could I want in a book.

Great Story!
This story was great. I was a bit skeptical at the beginning it definitely got better. This story ended abruptly and I hope the next book is about the same characters. Can’t wait to listen to book 2.

Totally enjoyed this book. Karma was given a true backstory so you really understand her. Rafe is a total good guy (alien) who truly is very honorable.

This was an enjoyable read. The characters were interesting, there was an alien culture to explore and just enough romance to keep it spicy. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

So, I think overall I just don’t like an alien romance, it may have to do with the scales and tails. Overall, the storyline was not bad, but I wouldn’t recommend this book.

Interesting erotic sci fi adventure
The worldbuilding is dark. The Galatian warriors are likeable; the Galatian queens are not. Karma is a sympathetic character. Dorf is awesome. I didn't realize all three books aren't in KU, so I won't be continuing the series.

This is a great series. I read it on Kindle Vella and just could not get enough of it. It took a long time to read it all, mostly because it was a serial released weekly for years, but even after 340 episodes and two years of dedication I never got bored or wanted it to end. Every character played an integral part in the book. The story is told from a variety of POVs, each unique and on their own journey, but it all blended together seamlessly. I finished the final episode available on Kindle Vella today and I'm sad that it's over, for now, but I'm excited that the author says she plans to continue the series and I can't wait for more to be released.
