I liked this book! At first, I thought I should go back and read The Family Upstairs, but The Family Remains has enough references to happenings in the first book to refresh your memory. It was slow to start, but after about 75 pages, I found it difficult to put down. If you liked The Family Upstairs, you will enjoy reading this one, too!

HATED this book and all the people in it. Painful, disturbing, pointless. A mess of a plot, with scrambled time lines played out over 1995, and random months in 2017, 2018, 2019. Looks like an attempt to rescue a weak book by stringing out the reader, and I hated it and wished the author, editor and publisher would show more respect for us. Don’t believe it when you read that it’s a “stand alone “ sequel. I relied on the character list on the fly page the entire way through the book. Will not read more from this author.

Lisa Jewell writes to keep you guessing. Another great read. Apparently, you should read the Family Upstairs first but I had no idea this was a sequel. It stands alone well.

Lisa Jewell once again delivers an absorbing psychological thriller that keeps you on edge until the final page. The Family Remains / The Family Upstairs intricately weaves two interconnected narratives filled with secrets, complex relationships, and jaw-dropping twists.

Jewell's writing is vivid and atmospheric, immersing readers in the dark and suspenseful world of her characters. The story's pacing is impeccable, alternating between slower, contemplative moments and bursts of gripping action. Each character feels deeply human, with flaws and motives that pull you further into the mystery.

While some twists are cleverly foreshadowed, others come as a complete surprise, making it nearly impossible to put the book down. Fans of family dramas with a sinister twist will especially appreciate the exploration of loyalty, betrayal, and the lingering effects of trauma.

Whether you’ve read The Family Upstairs or are picking up The Family Remains as a standalone, you’ll find yourself thoroughly captivated by Jewell’s storytelling. Highly recommended for thriller enthusiasts!

I'd read The Family Upstairs a while back and loved it. Lisa Jewell is a brilliant writer, an author who takes you from page to page so smoothly that you hardly realise you're turning them! The plotting in this book was clever but particularly intricate, involving several groups of characters, each having different connections to the crime that's uncovered and spanning different time periods in which their lives unfolded. It helped that I had read the earlier book, but at times I found the narrative a tad confusing, as it bounced me between different times, different groups, different names for the same characters. As always, they were well drawn and interesting, and the pace of the story kept you reading when you shouldn't be! Four stars then rather than five - the plot could have been less work for the reader - but still a hugely enjoyable read.

The home, even in its dilapidated state, is worth millions. Everything in Libby's life is about to change. A story of two families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

Too confusing. Characters had different names, jumped back and forth. Lucy was marie, brother Henry was he really abusive to phinn or Finn as name switched. Michael married to rachel but was also married to Lucy. Woman’s bones found in old house that eventually Lucy wants to buy when Libby gives her §$ she inherits. No explanation really how that came to be and where exactly that $ came from - grandparents ? And confusing with the Michael/Rachel/Lucy connection and why that was all included. Maybe to show how awful Lucy’s past was?

I read this book after reading"None of This is True" and "Then She Was Gone" and I think this will be my last Lisa Jewell. There's a lot of repetition between the books. Each story is driven by a weird/sad/creepy middle-aged woman who abuses a young girl. Each story has paedophilia and both Then She Was Gone and this book, a middle-aged woman who gets a young girl pregnant because she can't, in order to please her man. I love how easy Lisa Jewell is to read and the stories are interesting, but I just feel like her plotline is overdone now after reading 3 of her books.

I read the first book about a year ago and wished I read the second one sooner. Both tie into each other nicely and you tend to forget important details if not read close in time to each other. The only reason I gave it only 4 stars is because the characters are hard to keep track of in the beginning of each book. The final chapter of the second book ties the stories together nicely for a good finish.

Until I read the reviews for this book, after finishing it, I hadn’t realised that it was the sequel to The Family Upstairs which I read last year. That, in itself, is strange enough. I didn’t remember The Family Upstairs at all. When I read my review I was just very confused about the first book, This book however was much better. It was a gripping story in its own right. It was still quite convoluted, even contrived in parts, but I enjoyed it.

After reading the first book I couldn’t wait to read the second.
The second had lots of twists and turns but I felt it was quite rushed towards the end and that Henry’s character shifted almost instantly, unexpectedly and maybe just too fast?
I can’t wait to read the third book as both books kept me hooked throughout. I just think it’s a shame Henry’s character development changed so quickly considering he had so many bizarre thoughts for a majority of the book.

Took me a while to get into book one but this sequel was a real page turner. You definitely need to have read the first book to understand the plot and it answered anything left up in the air from it. A cracking read .

I actually liked this a lot more than the first book--The Family Upstairs. That was just a bit too weird and creepy and a little hard to believe. This continued the stories of some of the characters, but they were a bit more believable, and, as a result, the ending was much more satisfying.

Another fabulous book by Lisa Jewel. It’s the sequel to The Family Upstairs which I haven’t read but there are enough references to what happened in the house so I didn’t feel I missing out for not reading the first one. It was a great read from the beginning to the end!

I liked this twist complicated mystery. Well written and you like the characters though each and everyone of them is odd. Two mysteries lines are woven seamlessly together.

Listened to the audiobook on both of these books. I feel like they could have been condensed into one novel. Got a little bored in the second one. But still good storytelling overall.

At first I found it a little confusing. It took me a while to put all the characters in place. Then it was such a good read. I loved this book. I was rushing to finish it. So good.
