Underworld meets Vampire Diaries in this forbidden love, rivals to lovers, high stakes, slow-burn gothic contemporary fantasy romance.

A SINISTER DARKNESS BREWS, SOWING THE SEEDS OF WAR. AND AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL IS A YOUNG WITCH WILLING TO RISK IT ALL TO SAVE THOSE SHE LOVES.

When a mysterious crow crash-lands through Avery Jaxon’s Brooklyn apartment window, awakening the elemental magic dormant in her veins, Avery soon discovers her entire life has been a skillfully woven lie, and that even her new avian friend holds secrets of its own, including the answers to her shrouded past.

But pulling back the veil is only the beginning. An ancient prophecy has been set in motion, thrusting Avery into a centuries-old supernatural war between witches and vampires.

Seeking to harness Avery’s rare and ancient power, the most notorious dark arts witch hive in the world is on the hunt to find Avery before she’s captured by Kane, a vampire sworn to protect humankind from the next Spirit Marked—a foretold witch with such immense, raw magic, it will threaten to destroy all life on Earth.

Now, to save humanity and protect her friends, Avery must learn to control her potent magic, all while building an alliance with the warrior vampire sent to seize her. Their destinies are more entwined than either could have ever foreseen. But despite the magic that binds their paths and the enigmatic attraction growing between them, Avery struggles to trust the man born to be her enemy.

However, Kane’s not the only vampire thirsting for the honeyed taste of Avery’s blood...someone else also seeks to wage a war against her heart.

In the end, Avery must not only grapple with the painful truth behind her family’s past, but she’ll need to accept the journey laid out before her. For not only do the lives of those she loves depend on it, but so do the lives of every mortal and immortal creature alike.

A Dream of Blood and Magic is a gothic urban fantasy romance that completely took me by surprise. im not a big fan of urban fantasies but the setting worked so well here. this book really does have it all : rivals to lovers, multiple povs, forbidden romance, high stakes, elemental magic, vampires, witches and so much more.

“I want you more than is safe for me to admit. My self-control is on a precipice, my honor ready to burn to cinders… all because of you.”

Avery is an orphan who has no idea of the powerful magic that she holds just under the surface until she gets sucked into an age old rivalry between a witch coven and a vampire family. i simply adored Avery and her sass, despite her strong emotions and impulsive tendencies. she felt so real and relatable because of that though and i just wanted the best for her. i was obsessed with the world building too, the author took so much time to flesh out the backgrounds of the characters and this new way of life that they’re living in a way that felt fresh and new in a genre overflowing with similarities. the other two perspectives— Kane and Azrael (vampire brothers) had me fighting for my life in trying to guess who would be the love interest and i honestly still don’t even know for sure, but sparks were flying and im simply dying over here 😮‍💨. my only complaint is that the ending felt a bit abrupt compared to everything that came beforehand but it didn’t bother me enough to hinder how i felt.. need book 2 nowwww!!

side note - for my animal lovers, the fmc also has two familiars: a crow (kind of?🤭) and a fox🖤

many thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing Co-Op for the arc, all opinions are my own.

"My self-control is on a precipice, my honor ready to burn to cinders... all because of you."

Hypnotic and mystical, 'A Dream of Blood and Magic' stands out as a gothic urban fantasy with a rich noir atmosphere.

Introducing a vividly dark, skillfully crafted world steeped in magic, where the protagonist finds herself deciphering lucid dreams and communing with elemental spirits as she navigates a volatile supernatural path.

The writing style is particularly engaging, balancing immersive descriptions with story progression and natural, fluid dialogue. Occasional spice is executed with finesse, enhancing the romantic tension. Paranormal dark-fantasy aspects are elegantly integrated throughout, with exhilarating action scenes and moments of mild horror.

A significant strength of this novel lies in the intricate characters and their respective relationships. The dynamic between the heroine and her spirit guardians injects a unique and hopeful dimension into the story. The deliciously forbidden, slow burn romance is equally satisfying, unfolding with nuanced suspense.

The emotional core of the novel centers on Avery's tumultuous quest for self-discovery as she navigates a warring world. Surreal and intriguing dream sequences deepen the mystery, drawing readers further into her story.

Overall, 'A Dream of Blood and Magic' is a captivating and enjoyable book, offering a distinctive blend of gothic romance, strong character building, and an enchanting atmosphere. While the ending feels somewhat abrupt, the plot consistently provokes curiosity. A compelling read for those seeking a fresh and engaging urban fantasy experience, this novel leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. At times, I found the pacing a little slow, but as the end approached and more information was provided, the reasons because clear - this book plays a major role in preparing us for what is to come in the series. There were a couple of very well done action sequences as Avery causes a few catastrophes as she is coming into her power. Each of these is triggered mostly by fear or moments of great duress. This takes me to the magic system, which we are mostly introduced to in this instalment since most of it is accidental on Avery’s part. I believe the next book will really gives us a more in depth feel for the entire magic system as we experience Avery growing into her power.

As for the other characters… I want more Shadow (here’s hoping), Pyra, and I can’t wait to meet the other Spirits. Kane is a very intriguing potential love interest. We are promised much more for that and I can’t wait. The other side characters provide us with an ever darker side to the story - really hoping there is some recompense there.

I recommend this book to people that enjoy a slow burn paranormal romance that is primarily character drive in the first book, but with the promise of even more action to come.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Kingdom of the Wicked, this was not. I was so eager to dive into this world, but the writing style quickly dampened my enthusiasm. It felt like a relentless info-dump, heavy and suffocating. The male characters presented as one-dimensional jerks, and I couldn't find a reason to root for anyone. After several attempts to push through, I reluctantly threw in the towel at 35%. A disappointing read.

This. BOOK.

This is an intoxicating blend of gothic contemporary fantasy and supernatural intrigue that fans of Underworld and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will just LOVE. This urban fantasy romance immerses readers in a world where witches and vampires are embroiled in a centuries-old war, with Avery Jaxon at the heart of a looming prophecy as the chosen one.

After the childhood loss of her parents, Avery has been alone save for a friend and roommate that she met in foster care. When her dormant elemental magic is awakened, she is catapulted into a labyrinth of secrets and finds herself in the midst of an age-old supernatural conflict. The story is rich with twists and turns as Avery struggles to navigate this complex world with everyone hunting for her. Luckily, she has some elemental spirit companions to help her out. LOVE them!

Boothe has wonderful world-building, creating a vivid and immersive setting that blends our mundane world with the dangerous supernatural one. The stakes are high and the action is plentiful as the story keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Avery is a relatable and strong protagonist, grappling with newfound powers and the weight of her destiny. The vampires and the elemental spirits are complex characters. The chemistry between the romantic pairing is palpable, with banter and tension that makes me REALLY eager to get my hands on the next book. The supporting cast, including both allies and villains, is well-fleshed out, making their stories just as compelling as Avery's.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book is how it balances plot development with character growth. Boothe doesn't rush the relationship in this, allowing it to develop naturally amidst the chaos of the unfolding plot. And we get to know these two and the supporting cast well before the romance starts. Fans of slow-burn romances will appreciate the build-up and the early tension between these characters.

While the majority of the book is well-paced, the ending feels somewhat rushed. The big discussion near the climax, which should have been a pivotal moment, seems neglected and lacks the weight it deserves. I am eager to see what happens next, but I think this scene should have been given more time and more discussion rather than a summary of what was discussed.

Olivia Boothe has crafted a story with great characters, a gripping plot, and a richly detailed world that will leave fans of dark fantasy and supernatural romance craving the next book. Highly recommended.

I couldn’t put this down! Can I declare from the beginning that I am team Kane!!! The shower scene for the love of god! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.
I love how we are on this awakening with Avery and we witness her coming into her elemental powers. I think the way Olivia incorporated Dream walking and the other dimensions is fascinating. I like learning about the past and present and I’m so sucked into all timelines. I need book 2 now so I can find out if one of my favorite characters is saved. This book has Is vampires, prophecies, elemental powers and hot sexual tension. Read this book! You won’t be able to out it down. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey it took me on and I want more!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Avery has been labeled trouble and delusional since her childhood when she was shipped off from one foster home to another. Over time, she learns to keep her visions and weird sketches to herself until she finds CJ - an orphan just like her. Now they live together as roommates and best friends, accepting each other's bizarreness. However, when Avery's magical nature finally reveals itself to her in full force, the world she knows changes drastically.

Trigger Warning~ blood, gore, violence, death, human trafficking, explicit scenes, kidnapping, and past trauma.

Though the story is quite complex, the intricacies of its world are fascinating. The world building is wonderful - I enjoyed reading about the different realms and how the witches came upon this realm of Earth.

The characters are beautifully described, their personalities and backstories neatly explained in the first-person point of view and from the perspective of either Avery, Luther, Kane, or Azreal.

New concepts of this world were explained clearly, such as dream walking, sylph, Strigoi, etc. I admired Avery a lot. Her loyalty to her friends and her determination were very inspiring. The missing pieces of the past and present connected quite interestingly, adding to the mystery of the plot. Without the full story, I'm not yet sure what to think of the vampire brothers. The other witches all seem untrustworthy and very cunning - .

It was a very compelling and thrilling novel. I loved reading and immersing myself in this world of supernatural creatures filled with love, betrayal, and magic. I am very excited for the next book in the series, and I highly recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal romances with darker aspects.

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews of this.

The story gave me similar vibes to Crescent City – it's complex, and you need to pay attention. The slow burn kept me engaged, although I had some questions along the way (possibly due to my own lack of focus).

The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Avery's character resonated with me; she's relatable and self-aware, often acknowledging when she's making questionable decisions.

Kane and Azrael are intriguing, though I had some trouble following Kane's character development, particularly regarding his feeding habits.

Azrael's anger and trust issues are understandable, but I'm still getting to know him.

Loved Shadow and Fox, the familiars. Shadow it still my favorite.

The world-building is rich, with vampires, witches, and multiple realms. I'd love to see more exploration of the side characters and their interactions. The magic system is fascinating. I'm hoping for more backstory in future books.

Overall, it's a well-written, slow-burning story with a lot of potential. I'm excited to continue the series and see where it goes!

Received this copy from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story quite a lot and truly enjoyed the writing as well. I cannot tell you how many times I've rolled my eyes at the romance and romantasy books I've read over the years with the trite story lines, plots and phrases. I found this to be refreshingly not so! Ms Boothe has a knack for choosing her words wisely and not falling into the pit of mediocrity (a big plus in my opinion). While there is the often used 'immediate attraction of opposites' aspect of this story, the authors ability to convey its subtle, and not so subtle nuances effectively was....again....refreshing. And, I happen to like the struggle of resisting/fighting attraction in stories as it provides great tension, but not at the expense of explaining WHY it is so. Ms Boothe does explain why and that it is tied to the lore of the story. Now I am upset at having to wait for the next book.

I have read the author's debut romance duet and loved it. And so far, I am liking this one as well. Book 2 promises to be very spicy and if this book is the precursor of what is to come? I'm all in. Bring it on, sister!

A Dream of Blood and Magic had so much promise- I wanted to love it, but not enough happened and we didn’t get enough answers for the amount of build up. There was also very little character development/distinction between characters for an initial fantasy book. The world building and magic was so intriguing, enough to keep me reading- but the book ended without much answer or reward and felt like it needed more wrap up.

The author states this book sets the scene for the rest of the series, and I am curious to see where it goes- but think maybe some of the rest of the series should have been included in this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Underworld meets Kingdom of the Wicked in this forbidden love, rivals to lovers, high stakes, slow-burn gothic contemporary fantasy romance. A SINISTER DARKNESS BREWS, SOWING THE SEEDS OF WAR. AND AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL IS A YOUNG WITCH WILLING TO RISK IT ALL TO SAVE THOSE SHE LOVES.
This book was for sure a book that gave me vibes of a lot of other books. Such as:
•Forbidden Romance
•Chosen One
•Reincarnation
•Basic World Building and Character Development
We meet Avery. A woman who finds out her whole life has been a lie and that she is at the center of a war between a centuries long war between witches and vampires.
The multiple point of views of this story outside of Avery for sure gives this story a more well rounded story.
Avery as a central character for sure has her good and bad sides.
On the good side, she has this rare and ancient powers that makes her interesting on her journey to understanding them.
The bad side, she is a pretty character development that is pretty much paint by the numbers. And her journey outside her powers can be sometimes cringy. In the sense that it drags and becomes repetitive to the point where you wanna skip forward to get to the meat of the story.
Her romance kind of confuses me CuaSe you think it’s one guy and two min later it could be someone else. And both guys are also not as engagement and interesting as wish they were.
The storyline is pretty standard with her journey of harnessing her powers and the war that she can’t help but be involved in.
Overall this book is about a 3 star read for me.
Basic, nothing extraordinary and all around forgettable story that I won’t be interested in continuing since this book is seen as the launch of a series.
But like I tell everyone, don’t let my review dissuade you from reading this book. Just cause it didn’t click with me, doesn’t mean it won’t click with you.

Thanks to the folks at NetGalley for a copy of this book. My review is a honest reflection of my feelings towards this book.

A Dream of Blood and Magic

Yes! This was fantastic! From the moment I picked up the book I was captivated by this world of vampires and witches! I loved the story and adored the characters!

Avery was a down to earth girl who was easy to root for. She was swept up in a world she had no understanding of and only sought to do her best to survive.

Kane was a determined morally grey vampire who was doing his best to prevent further bloodshed. There’s still parts of his past that remain a mystery and I look forward to uncovering more of them!

I enjoyed the other POVs throughout and other characters as well! Shadow is one of my favorites and I hope we’ll see more of him!

I highly recommend this especially if you love multiple POVs, enemies to lovers, magic, familiars, found family, vampires, chosen one vibes, forbidden love, forced proximity, high stakes, ancient prophecies, and so much more!!

3.5 ⭐️, but rounding up for goodreads

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!!! honestly, I was expecting a simple vampire romantasy.. but instead I was thrown into an extremely intricate urban fantasy world with vampires, witches, humans, magical creatures, and several different realms 🤯🤯

This story also picked up so fast and stayed fast the entire time I was reading it, which I really appreciated 🙌🏽🙌🏽

The only negative aspect I have about this book. Is that as a romantasy book, there was very little actual romance in this book. BUT, the way this book was written set us up for an exceptional romance story within the next several books. This is an amazing slow burn and the burn has barely even started, so I cannot wait to see what this author does in the next book 😝😝

That’s all for now bookies, enjoy your read!!!!

This book is essentially fuck everybody but Avery, Shadow and CJ. Kane did redeem himself at the end, but not that much.
The tension between Avery and Kane tho... Let me just say, when they'll fuck, it'll be glorious. Too bad this is a slow-burn romance.
And now I have to wait for god knows how long for the sequel?! You can't do this to meee.

I received an ARC of this beaut from StoryOrigin.

This book had me feeling all the feels.
A tale of vampires, witches and spirit guardians.

I can fully admit the fact that I am now addicted to this lusty series, it's like fantasy smut crack.

The depth of the worlds weaved here are intense, with sweeping between realms in sleep and capturing glimpses of history during different POV, helping to build up an sizzling slow burning romance and still, after devouring the whole book I'm not closer to having all the info, this is going to tantalise the mind in the same way SJMs books have done for me.

I adored the spirit guardians, the humour in how they react and fit in the world, being neither human nor animal, but having a grasp of human instinct. TWATWAFFLE. Had me in stitches. My favourite cuss word as a kid.

The broody vampires, are drool worthy, will be interesting to see how those relationships develop. I'm all in for Kavery. ❤️🧛🏻‍♀️

The witches are super bitches. And the HUGE reveals near the end of the book were gobsmacking. I'm still reeling. Tryna get that empathy under control right now 😂

I am really looking forward to book 2. Like seriously, Kane & Azrael might haunt my dreams if I don't get another fix soon.

There's so much more I could say, but for now, I'm just going to say, shower scene. The aftermath is fantastic.

This book had me on the edge of my seat, sighing, laughing, eye rolling, holding my breath and lusting after 1000 year old fictional vampires. What a delight.

This book gets all the stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Gonna recommend to all the steamy, smutty fantasy fans. It is mostly close encounters, few background descriptions at the 1/3 mark, slow burny mostly until the shower😈, but Boothe says book 2 will kick up the heat. I for one, can't bloody wait. 🌶️🌶️🌶️

A Dream of Blood and Magic is the first book in the Spirit Marked series by Olivia Boothe. A Dream of Blood and Magic pulled me into its depth from the first page and never let go even after I read the last page.

A Dream of Blood and Magic is told from several different points of view. I like getting the story through more than one character’s eyes. I feel as if I get more of the story that way. I also think you get to know the characters better that way as well.

After saving a child from getting run over by a bus things change drastically for Avery. How she saved that child she has no idea but it is about to turn her life upside down. A war between witches and vampires and an ancient prophecy puts Avery Jaxon in the middle of everything.

A Dream of Blood and Magic is filled with magic, magical powers, ancient prophecies and so much more. I truly enjoyed reading the parts where Avery began using her powers. I especially loved watching her discover her powers and what she could do with them. The descriptions were written so well I had no problem picturing it all in my head as if I was witnessing all of it.

The many twists and turns kept me hanging on for more. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough as I raced to the end to see how it was going to end.

I can’t wait to see what awaits us in the next book in the Spirit Marked series. I want to know more about Avery and her powers.

If you like reading about vampires and witches, you will love A Dream of Blood and Magic. Grab a copy of A Dream of Blood and Magic today!

Okay. I don’t even know where to begin with this review except to say that I have read this 4 times in the past 2 years and know that I will read it again for the rest of my life.

The world(s) that Olivia created genuinely are so thought out and in-depth and we didn’t even see the full depth of it in this book. Vampires, witches, elemental spirit guides, and other worlds… I know we haven’t even scratched the surface. And it truly blows my mind to think about the worlds she created.

I adore this story and I cannot wait to see where it goes in the future. The characters are so deep and beautifully crafted and feel like genuine people with genuine conversations and problems. The story begins immediately, sucks you in, and then drags you along whether you’re ready or not (so be ready).

For those who are looking for spice, trust me when I say it is coming. This book is the framework for an incredible world and relationship. The smut girls will have their moment!!! This is the building block for a rivals-to-lovers romance that we will not be disappointed in. She knows how to write spice.

Oh how I wished this book was for me.
Vampires, witches, ancient secrets and world building?! It was all the right things for me. But, I struggled with it.
Cons for me was the parts of the book that were slower, moved glacier slow. I didn’t really like the FMC all too much. But aside from that, the parts where pacing was fast I was enraptured and completely lost in the world. I really like Azreal character a lot, His POV was always my favorite when I came to it. I am giving this a solid 3.75 because I just know that someone else will fall in love with this book.

Olivia Boothe's A DREAM OF BLOOD AND MAGIC is an urban fantasy that's giving UNDERWORLD/ TRUE BLOOD vibes. Be sure to take a shot every time I say, "vampire" in this review! If you like vampires vs. witches, dueling (sexy) vampire bros, a crow companion that turns into a hottie, and a mortal coming into her witchy powers...you'll probably enjoy this one. The atmospheres are lush and you find yourself from the snowy streets of New York to violent vampire clubs, and even Scottish castles inhabited by a bunch of crabby (and very sexy) vamps. AND after 500 years, an ancient vampire is awakened - the drama of it all! There's a very sexy vibe to this book without it being overtly sexual. Sure, you get a hot vamp jerking his meat in the shower, but as Boothe promises...the second book is going to be much spicier. So if you're looking for an ultra steamy urban romantasy, this one might leave you a bit parched.

I wish that there was slightly more character development and that some of the story wasn't as repetitive. Boothe sometimes tells instead of shows and I was left wanting a bit more as there's not much resolution at the end, except for a typical blood oath/pact...because of course there is. It does feel like I've read this story before, and it certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's still a quick, digestible and fun read. And if you like the first book, it's only the beginning of the Spirit Marked series, so more crabby vampires to come! Special thanks to the author for sending a physical copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

Some quotes I jotted down that remind me of when I also let things slide because a man is fine as hell:

"He was literally about to kill me, and all I could think about was how immense he was, and how horny he apparently made me; meanwhile, he could’ve literally crushed me if he wanted to… "

"Yet I’d allowed him— a complete and utter stranger— to disarm me, and expose my vulnerabilities with barely an effort except displaying his big muscles and pretty face."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️

This prologue of this book had me hooked from the start. The back story was interesting, and I was thoroughly invested in this world, characters, and magic. The 5,000 year time jump into present day New York in our world was a little bit jarring after that.

The beginning of our actual story was a little bit of a slow start. There were different types of supernaturals to learn about, as well as factions within them that I wasn’t fully invested until about 20-25% into the book. Once I had my bearings though, I couldn’t put it down and read the whole thing in one sitting.

I found the different POVs to be really well done. I honestly wasn’t sure who I’m supposed to be rooting for (other than Avery and her spirit animal things) for pretty much the whole book. I know I definitely do NOT like Luthor, but I still don’t know about Kane and Azrael. I feel like they both could go in either directions as characters and I like that I was kept on my toes the whole time and likely will be into the next book as well.

The author is definitely setting up a love triangle here, or possibly even a square, or maybe just straight up why choose. I honestly can’t tell you which of the men she may end up with (I vote all 3!) but there’s some tension and things mentioned with 3 guys and I’m excited to see where that goes. There’s not really any romance or spice yet, but there’s some pretty good banter and some scenes that let you know the spice will definitely be good when we get to it in later books.

So far we haven’t learned too much about the side characters, but the baseline is there and I’m excited to learn more about them.

I wouldn’t say it ends on a cliffhanger, but it ends right before we’re about to get so many answers and I hope book 2 comes out soon!

Overall I really liked the book and will definitely be continuing the series.

5 stars - a slow burn urban fantasy with vampires and witches.

Averys life is turned upside down when a bird crashes through her apartment in Brooklyn. As her dormant witch magic awakens, she is thrust into the long standing feud between witches and vampires. Avery turns out to be a special witch called the spirit marked, who can unlock a portal into the witches original homeland but in doing so, cause irrevocable damage to our world. The witches have also freed a decades old Vampire Azreal who was captured by his brother Kane who Avery has been unexplainably dreaming about. Tensions fly when Avery and Kane meet.

I absolutely loved this one - the world building and plot was phenomenal and captivating. A slightly slow start but once it got going I was hooked and it was hard to put the book down. The romance is slow burn and only begins to heat up towards the end of the book as the author teases more tension in book 2, that I can’t wait to get my hands on.

I felt Averys confusion and heartbreak as she learned more about the true world that had been hidden from her. I loved her relationship with her spirit guardians and I hope we get to see more of shadow in the next book.

Mostly dual pov between Avery and Kane but we also get to see Azreals pov which I enjoyed and I have the feeling her will be more ally than enemy in future books.

Would highly recommend for fans of serpent and the wings of night or kingdom of the wicked.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the cooy of the Ebook.

An ancient prophecy looms and a powerful magic awakens, with Avery Jaxon somehow at the helm. Orphaned at a young age, she’s learned to fend for herself and not to trust easily. Vivid dreams and visions haunted her for years and she tried unsuccessfully to piece them together to solve her parents’ mysterious deaths.

Now in present day New York City, her life and fate seemingly converges with two ancient and powerful vampire warriors on opposing sides. As Avery learns of the longstanding war between witches and vampires, she must choose a side and whom to trust.

Tropes/themes:
👀 Multi POV
🌙 Vampires vs witches
☝🏻 Chosen One
🚫 Forbidden Love
🫂 Forced Proximity
🔥 Slow Burn Tension
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Found Family
🚪 Portal Magic, Elemental Magic, Bargains
🐦‍⬛ Spirit Guardians (familiars)

Avery is headstrong and fiercely loyal. The story explores her vulnerabilities and understanding of her circumstances while introducing different types of magic and vampire lore. I especially enjoyed the spirit guardian (one in particular 👀) and the banter throughout.

Kane is a brooding tortured hero and Azrael is ruthless and cunning but seems to have a soft side. Not me lobbying for a why choose 😂 (I totally did). The tension between Avery and these males radiates and builds with each encounter. But betrayal, heartache, and loss are at the forefront of their minds.

I am excited to see where the next book takes us as alliances shift and more secrets are uncovered!

Huge thanks to the author for the ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review

🩸You’re in for a slow burn!

“So, when you touch yourself tonight, when you bring yourself to a shuddering release, think of that—of how fucking hard you made me, Avery. And about how leaving you at your chamber door tonight is going to feel like a thousand sun-scorching deaths.”

She’s promised us more spice to come and I really hope it delivers because that was such a tease.

This book was all about world building, character development and scene setting. I loved the intersection of urban fantasy with potential fae portal Romantasy tropes. The elemental guardians absolutely SLAP, one of my favourite parts - my boy Shadow better be back soon!

There was loads of action, the plot was well paced and we reaaally got invested in the villains of this story. How much do we all hate the witches and Luther?! For real.
The only part that fell a little short for me was the anticlimactic ending after so much plot fueled action throughout the rest of the book. The tension was high for sure, but the peak of the book was just a conversation which felt…understated, for lack of a better term.

I can’t tell where this series is going, which honestly is pretty exciting - so many unanswered questions to keep you guessing and who knows what romance narrative is going to happen. Is it a love triangle? Am I sick and twisted for hoping for a reverse harem with two brothers? Are they actually even blood related or just vampire brothers? Maybe that makes it perfectly fine…I actually don’t care, please give us the RH we all deserve!

This is an intoxicating gothic contemporary fantasy that I know will be even better during the reread & that this is just the beginning of an amazing series. There is A LOT of complex world building in this book - I’d say the first half is totally world building and you’ve got different realms and portals along with MULTIPLE POVs and about a dozen characters to keep track of. If you have the patience I’d highly recommend taking notes as you read this one… there’s a lot of information to absorb.

Avery’s POV was my favorite for sure - I loved learning about what she had been through and my heart truly felt for her. The last 20% of the book felt like it went by so fast and the ending had me wanting the sequel IMMEDIATELY. We are definitely being TEASED with a satisfying enemies to lovers that I’m already impressed with.

This book was incredibly well thought out and beautifully written - I would HIGHLY recommend this to lovers of Crescent City, From Blood and Ash, Serpent & Dove, and Heartless Hunter. Vampires, witches, magic all around — this is going to be one epic series. I’m ready for more smut, Olivia!!

Than you so much to NetGalley and Three Brothers Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest feedback. I am totally invested in this exciting series and I’d love to read more from Olivia Boothe.

I may be in the minority not falling over themselves for this title but I do think it shows promise.

Balancing a hearty premise and loaded lore, “A Dream of Blood and Magic” throws a lot at the wall and somehow manages to make a chunk stick. With setting up the mythology of our creatures of the night and wicked witches we shift between the last and present to unravel a tale that also sprinkles in some elemental magic right on top.

The characters were interesting and I sympathize with Avery as she struggled to come to terms with it all since I too had trouble but her friends along the way were some of my favorite additions to the story. Our vampires are curious and lean more towards that of Interview with a Vampire than Buffy with their bloodlust at the forefront and almost all snark is missing. Not sure what it is setting up romance wise but I’m indifferent enough at this point to make a call on who or what I wish to see win out in the end.

It was a quick read with lots to find enjoyment in but plenty of questions and a real worry that by time the sequel comes around I will forget a majority of what I’ve read today but only time will tell!

*special thanks to the publishers and netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for a fair and honest review*

This was such a fun paranormal contemporary romantasy! I had such a great time reading this book. Thank you, Olivia and RR Book Tours for sending me this ARC.

Allie is living with her best friend that she met while they were in the system. She has visions and dreams of far away places and other strange things. This book has witches, this book has vampires, and they're all after Allie, who supposedly is going to have this immense power that will save the urban world. She ends up with a familiar type friend to start helping her with her power as it comes to her, and you fall in love with him. He's so great.

Kane is our broody vampire in the urban world trying to help it the best he can while his brother is entombed. He's trying to help keep Allie out of others' hands and Allie eventually figures he's the best of all the evils. She's familiar with Kane and his brother from her visions, so she feels like she knows them a bit. There is so much building and going on with this book. I can't wait to see where it goes. Just a heads up. It is an incredibly slow burn and the love interests aren't going to be with each other until the next book.

Tropes:
Vampires x Witches
Chosen One
Forbidden Love
Rivals to Lovers
Forced Proximity
