Fall in Love #1

Friends Don't

Rate this book
A heartfelt and hilarious romantic comedy, loosely inspired by While You Were Sleeping . As the oldest of three sisters, Poppy Kasper doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t the glue holding her siblings—and their lives—together. So moving across the country to Cashmere Cove, the hometown of her new boyfriend, is completely out of character. Add in the fact that said boyfriend is leaving for a months-long pro-golf tour, and it’s enough to make Poppy question her sanity. But it’s fine. Everything’s fine. She can still be a good sister from a distance, and she’ll keep the spark in her relationship alive with calls, texts, and old fashioned love notes. See? Fine. Quiet and serious Mack Bradley is used to playing second fiddle to his famous younger brother, especially since his own reputation was ruined nearly a decade ago. He’s made his peace with his circumstances, but when his brother begs him to show his new girlfriend the Cashmere Cove ropes, and then ups the ante with an even bigger request to stand in as her pen pal, Mack finds himself thrown into the path of the effervescent Poppy Kasper. She’s his foil in every way…she also makes him feel things he’s never felt before. A summer of pranks, late-night swims, and stargazing finds Poppy and Mack forging an unlikely friendship—one built on laughter and pushing each other to see life in a different light. But when Poppy’s relationship with Mack’s brother unravels, will she leave town? Or is there another reason for her to stay? After all, friends don’t fall in love…do they? (Friends Don't is the first book in the Fall In Love series, which follows three sisters as they find love after moving across the country to the small town of Cashmere Cove, Wisconsin. This is a closed door romcom with plenty of sizzling chemistry and romantic tension, but no spice.)

This was PRECIOUS! As you can expect from the title, this is a friends-to-lovers romance, which admittedly is not my favourite trope—but this was not your typical setup!

Despite Poppy Kasper uprooting her life to be closer to her boyfriend, she must temporarily say goodbye to Holland while he is away on a pro-golf tour. In the meantime, she'll be living next door to Holland's handsome, reclusive brother, Mack ...

I adored these characters and the depth within their own backstories. Filled with laughs and delightful adventures through the colourful and cozy small town of Cashmere Cove, the friendship between Poppy and Mack was simply the sweetest.

Based on the circumstances, this did a really great job at delivering some forbidden-type tension while still keeping the blooming romance respectful, low on drama, and free of cheating.

Eventually delivering some fantastic sizzling kisses, of course! I can't wait to read more from this series.

(heat level: kissing only)

I'm picky about friends to lovers because so often, the reason the two people haven't dated is because "they don't want to ruin the friendship." Blech.

But this book. THIS BOOK. Y'all. It's magical. Sweet, closed door, and everything I need in a rom com. Be ready to read when it comes out this summer!

Friends Don’t by Leah Dobrinska is a cozy, sweet contemporary romantic comedy about Poppy Kasper, the ever-giving eldest sister who moves across the country with her boyfriend only to have him jet off on a long pro-golf tour and leave her navigating a charming small town and unexpected friendship with his quiet, thoughtful brother Mack Bradley, a friendship that quietly evolves into something deeper even as Poppy tries to keep her life (and her heart) on track. It is a feel-good, laugh-inducing friends-to-lovers story set in picturesque Cashmere Cove that celebrates connection, growth, and the very real magic of summer romance.

Right away I found myself drawn to Poppy’s effervescent spirit, the way she juggles caring for her siblings back home with trying to nurture a long-distance relationship that begins to fray almost before it starts, and I loved how that vulnerability made her feel like someone you could genuinely root for. Mack, steady and a little guarded from years of living in his famous brother’s shadow, grows on you slowly, his dry humor and unexpected kindness softening that first gruff impression and making the instant friendship between them feel honest and heartfelt.

The chemistry between these two builds through shared laughter, late-night swims, and stargazing, and the dialogue sparkles with wit and warmth that made me smile frequently and gasp a little in that delightful way only a good rom-com can. While the premise, falling for your friend’s brother could have felt awkward or controversial, the author navigates it with care so the connection between Poppy and Mack feels respectful, sincere, and genuinely earned.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This book made me laugh, sighed with joy during tender moments, and feel that sweet, cozy warmth only a small-town rom-com can deliver.

Poppy and Mack’s journey from unlikely companions to something tender and meaningful stayed with me.

A highly enjoyable sweet romance y’all. I had such a good time reading it and already adore the set-up and characters and am excited for the next book!

I thought Poppy and Mack’s friends to lovers romance worked well. You could see the chemistry from the start and the banter had me smiling. I looove the way heat was included without spice (it is in the sweet category!). I felt this romance and the connection between them. I was just as desperate as them to get to that first kiss. I also liked the way the third act was handled. It came off as a necessity while allowing for growth and new understandings.

The small town plot was one of my favorites. I loved all of the back country vibes and I absolutely loved that Mack was an electrician. Way to show off a career I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a romance novel. There were a few minor plot / writing quirks that I didn’t jive with, but it didn’t ruin the book in any way for me. This was exactly what I needed and I loved Poppy and Mack’s story!

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: very little and light
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a parent (recounted), parental abandonment (recounted), cheating (previous relationship)

I am a self-proclaimed fangirl of Leah’s, but this book blew it out of the water. I could not get enough of Poppy and Mack and loved how bookended the scenes at the beginning and end of the story were. I couldn’t believe this was a new genre for Leah; it all came together so seamlessly and was such a delight to read. I can’t wait to read the next in this series and won’t be mad if some day Mack and Poppy get a second book 😘

Leah Dobrinska has blown me away with this wonderful romantic comedy and I'm impatiently waiting for more in this genre! (Gosh that teaser for the next rom-com was amazing!!!)

The relationship between Mack and Poppy was so fun to read and dream about. Dobrinska has talent in bringing scenes to life and writes in a way that allows her readers feel all the feels with the characters throughout the entire book. From the hilarious open scene to the impromptu kissing session in public, the perfect truth and dare scenario, and the awesome touch of realistic sibling banter, this book exceeded all expectations. It's impossible to pick just one favorite scene and I love how the supporting characters encouraged Mack and Poppy to embrace their relationship and see where it would go.

If you're looking for a change of pace or a fun read to bring smiles and possibly a few laughs, you won't regret reading this book, and you'll have a hard time putting it down too! Get ready to be roped in from the very beginning. 😉

This was actually really cute and enjoyable.
Imo, the cover is super cheesy and screams “amateur writing- you’ll probably DNF!” but I’m so glad that I gave it a chance. It was definitely a fun romance, and I’m going to read the rest of the series.

What I liked:

- The characters were likable and engaging.
- Chemistry was great!
- Lots of swoony scenes.
- Healthy romance.
- forbidden relationship, but no cheating
- worth mentioning: I usually don’t like dual perspective because it often destroys chemistry, but this author pulled it off in this book.
- I actually chuckled out loud a few times. And I’m sure I had a big smile plastered on my face a few times.
- There were some plot lines/obstacles that authors sometimes carry for too long (like the MC mothering a sibling to the point that she uses it as an excuse to push potential partners away), but they were resolved in a timely fashion. In other words, this author did not prolong these obstacles. I liked that a lot!

What could have been better:

- There WAS some cheesiness. The town tradition of pranking newcomers was very cheesy and completely unrealistic, and even WEIRD if you try to imagine it IRL. I’m glad that wasn’t a bigger part of the book. Also, Poppy’s bubbliness was occasionally over the top, to the point where she came off as irritating and socially immature. Thankfully that resolved itself so it no longer happened the last half of the book.

- There was an instance when he preaches at her about how she should live her life (“What you’re doing isn’t living. It’s play-acting at life.”) which I thought was harsh, unwarranted, and completely premature for their casual level of friendship. Thankfully, he backed off and she wasn’t too offended. I was able to overlook this line.

- For the most part, the writing was good. But a few times it was dorky and threw me out of the story. Examples:

“Stop that,” I say. “Your dentist isn’t going to be pleased with you.” <—- this is a man speaking. What guy would ever say “pleased with you”??! Especially to another DUDE?

He rakes his hand through his hair. “Gosh, I think so highly of you, Poppy. Can’t I have another chance?” <——what is this, a grandpa speaking? “Gosh, I think so highly of you”? C’mon now.

Like I said, this wasn’t a constant thing. For the most part, the writing was fine. The style is written in a way where the character is speaking to the reader, ie, “Don’t judge me.” I usually don’t like this style, but it didn’t bother me too much in this book.

Content-
Language- no swearing. Some use of “bastard”
Steam- clean but still had chemistry. Some kissing.
Cover- atrocious
I read this on KU

This is a rom-com and, yes, it’s sweet and funny, but it also has a somber note to it and touches on some difficult and real issues. Both Poppy and Mack have emotional baggage that has to be worked through, and the romance is sweeter because of it.

Not surprisingly, the story is focused on character and relationship development, and is pretty light on action or plot. It’s a little slow at times because of this, but never to the point where I lost interest and considered putting it down. The author really did a great job developing and fleshing out the characters. It’s a touching story, especially for a rom-com.

Content:
There’s no foul language, sex, or violence. The are a couple heated kissing scenes, but they are limited to kissing and holding.

There is a couple that lives together before marriage but it is a toxic relationship and shown in a negative light.

The Lord’s name is brought up a few times (even the Holy Spirit), which I initially thought was used in vain… but after reading it through I no longer believe that is the case. Though I certainly wouldn’t call this a Christian book, the author seems to be writing from a Christian worldview and the references genuine.

GENRE
romcom

CONTENT
-🤬: infrequent language (1 s, 1 h)
-❤️: some innuendo, makeouts
-⚠️: loss of parent (past), parental abandonment (past)

WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO START THIS SERIES?! I loved this story! It was friends to lovers but it had a fresh take— strangers who meet because she is dating his brother, then friends while her boyfriend/his brother is gone and then after she realizes it’s time to break up, feelings begin to build! I loved the writing style and am so invested in the characters. I can’t wait to read Noli and Collin’s story!

Favorite Quotes:
-Let’s just say, I’ve had enough tumult in my life to last me a good, long while. At the risk of sounding like a killjoy, I’ll take boring any day of the week.

-There’s a look in his eyes that I’ve never seen before—from him, or from any man…ever. “You take up the exact right amount of space.”

-But words of gratitude aren’t the same as actions of gratitude.

-“Did he hurt you?” My question comes out in a growl. Poppy might be the most exquisite human being I’ve ever encountered, and so help me, if Holland did something to dim her light, I will personally see to it that he makes amends.

-“I’m so sorry.” I don’t know what I’m apologizing for. But there isn’t anything else to say. We need a new word in the English language that means: I don’t understand why bad things happen to good people, and none of it is fair, and I wish I could make it better, but since I can’t, know I’m here and I feel torn up on your behalf.

-Time: One o’clock. Cause of Death: Hot electrician. His drill. His back. His arms. His mind. Rest in peace, me.

-"...you told me later that whenever you’ve felt lost, or drifting, or like you weren’t sure what to do or where to turn, you’d look up at the sky and feel grounded.” ... “You are my sky. When I look at you, I’m grounded. I know exactly where I’m supposed to be. It’s with you.”

Mack is an electrician. What more can I say? Having written an electrician hero myself and with a brother who is an electrician, I immediately connected with this book. Most of the highlighting I did pertains to that aspect of the story.😄

And Poppy, well she was just downright adorable and hilarious. The relationship between her and her 2 sisters was fun to witness as well.

The storyline was easy to follow, it was a quick read, and was just the lighthearted comedy I needed in my life right now. I'm glad it was recommended to me when I asked for books with the "neighbors" trope.

Disclaimer: There is some mild language used throughout and 1 kiss that maybe got a little too descriptive, but overall it was clean.

This took me a bit to get into because the setup of the book was odd to me. Your brother moves his girlfriend to his hometown and then leaves on tour. He asks you, his older brother, to befriend her and to drive her to have dinner with and meet your family (while he’s not there). Then he asks you to answer emails she will be sending him while he’s away so he doesn’t have to? What!? It was just a weird way to push the two main characters together. It felt very much like the boyfriend was trying to set his older brother up with his girlfriend. Then, Mack (the brother, not the boyfriend) and Poppy (the girlfriend) start using nicknames for each other after knowing each other for five seconds. It was just weird. I feel like the plot would have been fine minus the “boyfriend who isn’t around” angle. It just made Mack and Poppy’s “friendship” feel more like emotional cheating for half the book.

Overall there were some sweet moments, but having Holland’s brother catch feelings for his girlfriend while they were still dating just kind of made me “meh” for the end result. The book was sold as a play on “While You Were Sleeping” but in that situation, Lucy wasn’t actually in a relationship with the brother. ;)

That was so cute, I really needed something like that to ease my stress level these days
The book is About Poppy, who decided to move to a new town to follow her boyfriend of two months, but immediately he goes on a tour (because he is a famous something) and leaves her with his brother Mack, at first they don't know how to act to each other because they practically live in the same house but she is his brother's girlfriend .. soon a sweet friendship blooms between them and that turns into more ..
This is not a cheating book .. I repeat, this is NOT a cheating book, because Poppy was faithful to her boyfriend until the end .. and Mack is the sweetest gentleman and never acted on his feeling while they were on a relationship, the banter between those two was nice and I really liked the overall fell of the book, my only complaint is that the writing style was a bit juvenile for my taste

What a fun read!

I didn’t read the synopsis before starting this book. I felt like I got the gist from the title… yeah, nope! I was not expecting this trope. But it was nothing bad at all. It was so tastefully done and there was zero ick involved.

While I found the MMC endearing from being a swiftie and doing dance workout videos…let’s be honest, in real life that would be a total red flag!

I also wasn’t crazy about the fact that she called him “Big” as a nickname. That made me cringe every time I had to read it. But they were such a sweet couple.

This book is totally clean but had lots of innuendo that felt appropriate to their age and kept the book feeling realistic!

I’ll definitely be continuing the series!

Hearing the hype about this book since it came out definitely gave me fomo for a bit so I was very happy to get to finally read it!!!

I devoured this book faster than our favorite Easter candy. And I’m stoked that I can move right into book two!!!

I loved
*the nicknames and banter
*the summertime vibes (very much needed the reminder that summer WILL come again as it’s snowed all week here.)
*And that as a previous FL and current WI resident I loved the locations … especially having such clear visual of what I think Cashmere Cove looks like. 🌊

Leah started this new series off with a bang!

Oh my goodness, I LOVED this book!!! The snarky banter, the hilarious situations, the pranks, and the small town welcome were just the beginning of what I loved. Add in some fabulous characters that I wish were some real life friends and an absolutely swoony love story and you have another home run story that Leah is gifted at creating. Mack and Poppy are MCs you won’t forget soon and are sad to leave when the story is finished. Holland added the right touch of angst as did the Tricia situation but I loved the depth each of these happening added. Suffice to say, this is the perfect summer read you need in your life right now. Get yourselves to Cashmere Cove, friends; I promise you won’t want to leave either!

I received a complimentary ARC of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

I read this is in 24 hours. And I am not a fast reader.

This sweet romance was everything you want and need in a rom com. Spicy feels, cute quips and quirks, and characters that were hard not to love.

A perfect lighthearted read (that you may buzz right through!), that has the small town charm and just makes you want more! It was the perfect weekend read that I needed. Felt like I was watching it all unfold on a screen.

Eager for more of the spoiler from the back!

Secret pen pals/Hidden identity. Friends to Lovers. Did he hurt you? 😏 Set in Wisconsin. He's an electrician. She works for Parks and recreation. Forced proximity. Nicknames. Grumpy-Sunshine. Nicknames. He falls first. The Tension 🤌🏻🤌🏻 Chapter titles. Meddling family/friends. Ex-drama. Dual POV. Lighthearted pranks.
I absolutely loved this story! It was so sweet. Their relationship had such a natural progression. I definitely recommend it!! 🥰

⚠️ TW: Topics lightly touched and handled with care. Death of a parent (past) Parental abandonment, Toxic relationship (side character)

💕Romantic Content: 3 heavier kissing

🗨Some Quotes:
From my side, Poppy lets out a cackle that could rival the hyenas in The Lion King

"Are you afraid I have cooties?”
I don’t dare tell her that I would gladly take any and all of her cooties, because that sounds weird any way you phrase it

He’s staring down at me as if I’m the most precious thing he’s ever laid eyes on. Like I’m the last sentence of his favorite storybook. His gaze is tinged with both longing and contentment.

If you are looking for a light hearted rom com, definitely give this one a go! Friends to lovers has never been my favorite trope, but I absolutely loved it in this book. The book had the best progression of the two MC relationship. I love Poppy and Mack and their personalities. Their nickname game is STRONG. They are so good for each other and bring out the best in each other too. They are both so selfless! The side characters are very lovable too. I like the community and the setting. It’s made me want to visit the peninsula in Wisconsin! I smiled the whole time and loved the authors writing. Lots of witty lines. So many laugh out loud scenes and really sweet moments too! The characters communicated well and I was never frustrated with them. Don’t worry about a love triangle or cheating either. I can’t wait for the next book!

SPOILERS and book notes:
“Good to know near nakedness and supreme humiliation doesn’t stop my mind from making its cultural references.” I love poppy’s inner thoughts. ““Of course. Be my guest.” Be my guest? Who am I? Lumiere the candlestick? I do feel a bit like I’m melting, so maybe?” This fictional town is located in a part of the country I have never been to before! “destination in northeast Wisconsin. The county spans the entirety of the peninsula that juts out from the state into Lake Michigan. Cashmere Cove is situated on the bay side of the peninsula.” Mack bestows the nickname “Boo” to Poppy Kasper. Mack is a man of few words and delivers things in a monotone voice. He wears lots of baseball hats too. And poppy picks “Big Mack” for him! But she will just call him “Big”. Heck yes this nickname game is STRONG. And I absolutely love both MC for different reasons. I love poppy’s positive look on life! I love what she says: “I hope your day has been good too. If not, take a minute to look up—whether it’s morning or it’s night. It’s impossible to feel bummed out when you’re looking up to the sky.” I love that this is the feeling that she developes for Mack wayyy before romantic feelings: “I feel a tug in my chest as the door swings shut behind him, and I recognize it for what it is. It’s the same sort of feeling I get in my gut when my sisters need me—in those moments when I know I have to step up and go to bat for them.” Bahaha I love this: ““I want nothing to do with getting rabies. Haven’t you read Old Yeller?” “Now is not the time to flaunt your literary superiority, Rose,” Poppy scolds. “I need to focus.”” I love that poppy is so strong and capable. And that her sisters can count on her for anything. But she is also kind and non judgmental. She is strong physically and makes the best out of any sad situation. She took out two bats when they got into her home! Boss woman. I love that Mack says this: “There’s a look in his eyes that I’ve never seen before—from him, or from any man…ever. “You take up the exact right amount of space.”” And space means physically, mentally, and emotionally. All are valid. I love that looking up at the sky is both so grounding to them. It would be a great time to converse with God and feel his closeness. Mack is such a protector. Always looking out for everyone. “Mack reminded me that there’s a difference between what I do for a living and for others and what I do for me.” And then he used a great analogy that reminded me of the New Testament: ““There’s a difference between selfishness and taking care of yourself.” . “You can’t keep burning for others if you don’t add oil to the lamp.” I totally agree!!!: ““I’m so sorry.” I don’t know what I’m apologizing for. But there isn’t anything else to say. We need a new word in the English language that means: I don’t understand why bad things happen to good people, and none of it is fair, and I wish I could make it better, but since I can’t, know I’m here and I feel torn up on your behalf.” This is sooo true!! HAND ON THE BACK: “Why is there something so irresistible about the hand-on-the-back trick? Is this something all men know? If not, they should. Want to make a woman feel like she’s the most priceless thing in the world to you? Put your hand on her lower back. Even better, do it in a crowded room, when other people are around.” “It’s like, with that simple gesture, he’s not only taking care of me but also staking his claim.” “Stake that claim, Mack Bradley. Be the astronaut to my moon.” I like that there wasn’t miscommunication or grudge holding etc. the hug at the end!! And the epilogue proposal. It makes me excited for the enemies to lovers next book! I don’t personally like the cover…. Haha

I adored this story. So, so, so good. I wish there were more than five stars that I could give it. Poppy was so sunny and nurturing. She was so focused on taking care of her sisters. That responsibility had become her identity in many ways. Mack was grumpy on the outside, but a total cinnamon roll inside. He was constantly giving his time and efforts to everyone (being “everything to everyone”), even while being judged and mistreated by so many people in his community. He was so sweet to Poppy. The way their relationship grew was beautiful to follow. The electrician and ghost jokes between Poppy and Mack were priceless. So cute. And the nicknames. So sweet. I think that this book had my favourite compliment ever, when Mack tells Poppy, “ ‘You take up the exact right amount of space.’ “ Swoon. I kind of fell in love with Mack myself when he said that. I liked that there was a lot of time and many interactions for their feelings to grow. So many wonderful moments of friendship. And funny moments. So many swoony moments too. The secondary characters were so great as well. Cashmere Cove is a perfect setting. I was concerned that the whole Holland situation, the emails, Florida, and some other details might become overly angsty, but it actually felt to me like those situations were just angsty enough to be real, without being overblown and overdramatized. I would kind of have liked to see a little more in the way of consequences for Tricia, but what happened was in keeping with Mack’s character. I guess I’m just vindictive, ha ha. The epilogue teases the second book in the series. It was exactly what I was hoping for after the details that were dropped in this book. I’m dying to read it. I’m sure it will be as fantastic as this book. This is a closed door story with some innuendo. The book is mostly harsh language free, but there is one instance. To be honest, it felt a little odd. If the book is harsh language free for the entire book except the one time, why use it the one time? But that’s just a personal assessment. This is a great book! I highly recommend it!

"He’s staring down at me as if I’m the most precious thing he’s ever laid eyes on. Like I’m the last sentence of his favorite storybook. His gaze is tinged with both longing and contentment."

This is one of the most beautiful sentences I've ever read, Leah 🥹

The book begins with Poppy locked outside her new home in a towel.. she's just moved to a new place with her famous boyfriend she's known for 2 months and he's gone on tour for awhile when his brother (her new landlord Mack) helps her get back into the house 🤣

This scene had me rolling right out the gate.

Everyone here knows I love love love a Romcom book and honestly... this is a top-tier book for me! I rarely read books, I'm an audiobook person, and when I say I flew through this... I mean it. I couldn't put it down! I'm not surprised, though, because Death Checked Out by Leah is also an amazing, cozy mystery. If you love Emily Henry or Tessa Bailey, you with DEVOUR this book.

This book has everything I need

-It's an amazing hook
-Developed characters
-great storytelling
-Satisfying wrap up
-endless Taylor Swift references

The grumpy/sunshine friends to lovers trope may be my new favorite combo!

Also....I have been in full-fledged Eras Tour mode, so Mack being a Swiftie made me sooooo happy 🫶

I have never had so much in common with a character than I do with Mack.. he loves Hamilton, does dance fit, and can belt any Taylor Swift song ever created. What more do you need?!

Buckle up and run to your closest bookstore/Amazon and BUY THIS BOOK. It is also on Kindle Unlimited! I was so blown away by Leah's story telling/banter and I am so so glad there will be more to the series! Thank you, Leah, for the advanced copy! I loved every second of it.

I am typically not a lover of the entire Friends to Lovers trope...However! This book has totally changed my mind. Leah Dobrinska did this trope right and to absolute perfection! There wasn't the typical pining after one another unknowingly that lasts forever. Instead they moved from strangers, to friends, to lovers seamlessly and perfectly.

This was one of those books that I just couldn't put down and was such a breathe of fresh air to have a book that I loved and enjoyed every minute of! I am a total fan of grumpy brooding guys and Mack is just written so well! He is everything brooding with such a soft heart underneath all his hard layers. He is definitely one you want to be friends with and have in your corner.

Poppy is such a sweetheart and I love that after years of taking care of her family she finally has someone in her corner to take care of her. She is such the sunshine to Mack's storm clouds and I love how they complete and compliment each other so well. And their nicknames...like the best nicknames for each other and totally one of my favorite things about this book too.

This book made me laugh out loud, swoon, and total feel all the warm feelings. Like truly this book is just the best and I'll totally rave all about it. I'm already wanting book 2 asap and this one hasn't even officially released yet. It is truly that great!

If you want a loose retelling of While You Were Sleeping, flirty banter, grump and sunshine, small town feels, and the perfect summer read totally add this one to your To Read list now...like really now!
