Keeps you on your toes FOR SURE. A siren (Elmira), a pirate (Peter), and a witch (Ophelia) but I got Disney vibes from it all. It was a nice and quick read overall!

This was my very first ARC read & boy was it a good one to start off with! Sirens, pirates & witches!
Dual POV!
When I first started this book it felt very much like it was giving the little mermaid with a splash of pirates of the Caribbean {which I LOVED!!} & as I kept reading it just kept getting better. It was giving me all the feels & I couldn’t put it down!! Such a fun book to read! I honestly want more but it truly was a great read! I will be recommending this book!

If your choices are death or accept a witches offer to become a siren (for life) what would you choose?! Such an amazing story with dual povs. I love that it’s sort of a retelling of the little mermaid but so very different. By far my fave quote is from Ophelia when she calls Peter a poor unfortunate pirate!

ARC review! I thought this was such a cute story! I loved Mira and how she grew as a character throughout the story and how she learn about her powers as a siren. So much action and so much going on which I loved and kept me wanting to read more!

This book will keep you on your toes wanting to know what twist is next. It is so easy to connect with the main characters, and the writer makes the POV changes really easy to follow. I can't wait to see what stories she comes up with next!

3 stars out of 5.

**I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

I'm torn on to give this 3 stars or 4 stars. I'm going to settle on 3 because the writing isn't there for me, and the book has a lot of flaws - or confusion for the reader, but maybe I was always just too tired to keep up. I'm going to give it zero spice - even though it has one karaoke sex scene that does go into a little detail that is probably the sole reason this can't be labeled a young adult or middle school story (okay, maybe not middle school, it does contain violence and bodily injuries - I didn't read middle school books, but I doubt this stuff is in those!).

The story is a dual POV, following the perspectives of Elmira and Peter, young adults who met in an orphanage. When Mira is sentenced to die, a witch named Ophelia swoops and saves her right before the gallows claims her neck. Ophelia turns Elmira into a Siren and welcomes her into her family. Peter, on the other hand, missed Elmira's execution looking for a pearl necklace, and spends the next 8 years as a pirate trying to free Elmira from Ophelia's covenant. The story takes place 8 years after Elmira's execution.

Tropes:
True Love
Happily Ever After
Virgin FMC/Virgin MMC (assumed)
Stand Alone

Let's start with the positive! The story is a "loose" retelling of Disney's version of "The Little Mermaid". I love, love, love "The Little Mermaid". It has a lot of recognizable scenes from the animation, but in different orders. It even has some of the same script, or inspired by. My favorite being "You poor, unfortunate, pirate".

It is a light read, this is due in part because it is fast paced - it seems to span only 3 or 4 days (though I think somewhere the author tells you that there's a large time span, but I'm unsure where the time leap happens). The author's writing style is very light and minimalistic. If you're into that kind of thing - I personally find it a negative - I'll explain why later. However, on the positive note, the light and minimalistic style also helps give it a dose of that fairytale feeling you get when you read The Brother's Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson, which makes the read more fun and whimsical.

It is a short read that you can get done in a day or so, if you're looking for another "The Little Mermaid" retelling. It deviates enough to be it's own, original story, while still paying tribute to all of our favorite scenes.

I do have a few qualms about the story, you may or may not agree with them. They're not deal breaker to ruining a story, they just aren't for me.

First, I've read all of Fergusons books, and she loves to write insta-love stories. I personally enjoy suspense and build up, so this trope is not for me. This book also contains moments of insta-trust numerous times - between the two MCs and between the MCs and people they encounter. It doesn't make sense, where one moment the author is building suspense and then the next the mage is spilling all of the covens plans and recruiting the MC to their cause.

Second, this one is my favorite. I could not take the karaoke sex scene seriously at all. I was laughing the entire time, I had to stop to breath. It was so cringy, for me. It probably stems from the fact that you will not catch me dead singing to anyone. That is reserved for showers when I'm home alone, and solo car rides. This girl, after like two days of knowing Peter since seeing him for the first time in 8 years, asked him if she could sing while they get down and dirty. So the entire time he's going at it - which is her first time ever (and probably his), she's just singing her heart away. I know this may be a common theme around siren books (I read another book where the mermaid lured her lover via song and didn't have this reaction), I just had trouble taking the moment seriously - which stems from the author's writing style. See point three.

Third, Ferguson's voice is very new. She has a lot of writing flaws, which I'll address in point four. She does not detail surroundings or sensory feelings - it's very limited. This contributes to her books being fast paced and light to read. However, it reads like a high schooler trying to write their first love story - which is what affected my viewpoint in point two. Ideally, the story is an epic love story with emotional twists and pulls of being separated and trying to reunite and fight for their love; realistically, it struggles to hit these points. The readers do not get to fall in love while the characters fall in love, they're just told that the characters are in love - which makes it hard to see the characters having any sort of chemistry. They're told that the characters are yearning and aching from separation and their obstacles, but the readers don't get a lot of suspense, struggles, or conflicts to feel the characters aches. It fails to deliver the emotional connection between character and reader. This is, in part, due to the characters already being in love before the story, the insta-love trope, and the insta-trust trope. With this being a repeated theme in Fergusons stories, it's becoming hard to become excited for the romance aspects and instead just read for the unique and creative adventures Ferguson takes you on.

Four,

Overall, I feel like I'm being too harsh. I don't mean any ill intent in my review, and I would say the positives - albeit shortly listed - outweigh the cons. The cons are nitpicky and my personal preference. The story itself is unique and fun, it isn't a stereotypical "The Little Mermaid". While it contains recognizable scenes, it's unique and fresh. Soooo, if you're looking for a new, short "The Little Mermaid" story, I do recommend you give this story a try.

Sentenced to death, Mira an orphan, is given a second chance. A witch offers a deal in exchange for her loyalty and new life. Mira will have a new family and a unique way to live. Surrounded by sisters who love her and work side by side with her, it’s almost everything Mira has ever wanted. What about her childhood love/best friend Peter? Will she ever see him again?

A must read for those who love siren/little mermaid. Such a unique retelling of a classic. Would you take the deal?

I received an arc of this book and I really enjoyed it in the beginning. I love books with a dual timeline and the chance it offers for more character development and was so on board with a little mermaid retelling with pirates and sirens!

About a third of the way through, it fell flat for me. It quickly became an instalove story and lacked what it needed to draw me in more. There needed to be more world building and character development.

If you are looking for something that is ‘but, Daddy I love him’, and nothing more, then you would enjoy it!

I hopped on this ACR read because Leigh Ferguson said "loose Little Mermaid" and "sirens and pirates." She did not disappoint. If you are looking for Little Mermaid, you won't find her here. Leigh uses the 2 ideas of land vs sea and the FMC's voice having power from the Disney classic. The rest of the book.... Honey, it's sirens and pirates. Underwater world. Fantasy and magic. Deals and promises. Elemental magic. Forgiveness and loss. The book keeps you sucked in from the first chapter just wondering what is going to happen next. Until the last chapter where life altering choices are made.
Throughout the book Leigh tends to use cliffhangers when switching perspectives in this book, So be prepared, you can never read "just 1 more chapter." Also, she titles all of her chapters in this book. Her chapter titles provide insight into the information that is going to be given in the chapter. It's beautiful. I also appreciate how she visually distinguishes internal monologue from the narration and/or dialogue.
Leigh Ferguson, if you're reading this I need moreeee! I would love to see more from this realm/universe. Different timeframes, other elemental magic and their covens, other pirates... (hmmm.. what about a Neverland spin-off.....?), or just anything. In the meantime, I am going to order this hardcopy for my shelf and go start reading some of your other books.

Nitty Gritty **** possibly spoilers ****
Characters: I will admit that character introductions got a little overwhelming for the first few chapters. I ended up making a little directory of sorts to organize who's who (but I'm also slightly OCD... so you may be fine!) Leigh does a wonderful job of giving just the right amount of info on minor characters needed for the storyline. Sirens, pirates, customers, sea folk, earth coven, etc. Then for the main character's she dives in deep. Their character development was great around the board; past experiences, relationship/friendship history, why they are where they are now. Plus, the book is written in both the FMC and MMC's perspectives giving more insight into their thoughts.
Setting: So this may be a personal thing but I wanted more time and place descriptions. I know it's a fantasy book so it may not be an Earth location. Whether it is or not, I was just a little lost in the beginning when the FMC gets swept away to another place; is it down the road, across the country, a different realm... The timeframe isn't as important because there is nothing political or historically important mentioned in the book.
Plot: The plot progressed at a good pace and was full of storylines and adventure. I am disappointed in the quantity of the "main battle." There was so much build up and angst that lead to facing the "sea witch" and then it was over in a page or two (hard to tell in pdf version.) Also, I understand why the FMC didn't want to go back to the ocean but I am really disappointed in her choice... I think she could have chose both. She could have had everything she wanted. Family, love, purpose. But with the decision that was made, Leigh did give us a good ending.

What will you not do for the love of your life? A Cursed Covenant is about a pirate serving a witch for years so he can reunite with a siren. This book surprised me in ways I did not expect. Although I enjoyed pirate movies and the little mermaid, I have not touched a book that tackles pirates nor mermaid/sirens. The author did a great job in hooking me with just the first paragraph. this is my first book of her but her storytelling is something that I like and would definitely entertain the thought of reading her other books. The dual POV added a layer of depth that only increased my enjoyment.

Each character were well written and have a certain allure to them making them lovable. The relationships between certain characters are something that you could relate to. The narrative is easily likeable, but, it is too fast-paced. if anything that is the reason I'm not giving this a solid 4-star. I wish it could have been longer or maybe a duology as I think that would have given the plot the justice it deserves.

A story of mermaids, pirates, witches, mythical beings, magic, and much more. If you like the Little Mermaid and Pirates, especially romance this story is for you. It begins with a force in terms of the protagonist of the story as it details every part of his life, especially his magic, Mira is a character with enormous potential that could be developed a little more along with Pete, began with great force but then their development was a little overshadowed. The other mermaids, Mira's sisters, are present in the background of the story but they don't have much to do in the plot, but you can feel the love and concern that Mira has for them, the love between sisters even if they are not blood-related is something that is very well represented in this story. The underwater world was one of the elements that I liked the most, the details regarding the description of the Sea folks, the goddess Moryana is a character I really liked the demeanor and strength that she presented, how she cared and loved her creations that called me a lot, The wave sprites that creatures more beautiful and sweet I loved them.

I loved the idea of this book, a beautiful story, especially since the mermaids are mythical creatures, powerful and above all beautiful. The creation of the music system and the elements that give them their powers are fantastic and well thought out, I would have liked to see more exploration of those powers. As for the love story is very beautiful but I felt it was a bit forced because after not seeing each other for eight years it is very fast for me that one day everything will be again as if nothing happened, but it does not take away that the love between them is beautiful and pure. I really enjoyed the book, if it were a little longer I think the story would have developed much better but overall I found it a well-created world that could have been expanded further for the growth of the characters I was left wanting to know more about what was going on in the story in a good way I loved it a lot because from the beginning I was hooked. I will be giving it 4 ⭐️

***ARC REVIEW***
**Possible spoilers**
The opening line of the book hooked me in. Other than the opening line my favorite quotes are "Peter. I promise to hold your heart. I promise to give you mine. I promise...as long as I am able...I will be by your side." and "Memories are the worse form of torture." In the first quote, you can hear the love and promise and in the second you can hear the sadness and pain.
Leigh did an amazing job at the details of the story, I could picture everything that was happening, and I could hear the emotions in all the character's voices, whether it was happy, sad, anger, heartbreak, etc. The book is a dual POV going between the two main characters Peter and Elmira. The fact that both Peter and Elmira would do anything for each other and find each other every time makes me happy. A love like that between two people is beautiful. The scene at the end of chapter 35 was beautiful! The scene with Mavlo was very heartbreaking, along with the goodbye, and the story ended very beautifully.
I love that the chapters are given a title and not just the name of the character as so many other dual POV books do. The chapter titles come from something within the chapter, usually a quote from one of the characters. I love the short chapters, it allows you to pick up the book and read in small parts when you have a second to read.
This is a standalone book, but I can't wait to see what else Leigh writes.

ARC REVIEW: This was an interesting read. Definitely fast paced and a short story but still good. You could easily pick up on the little mermaid vibes throughout. I appreciated it wasn't an identical retelling and had some twists throughout the story. This story wasn't overly dark or spicy. Also although it is fantasy and has great potential to be a much longer story/series it was relatively short. This is a quick read that could be completed in 1 day. The world building is there, but minimal ( again short novel). I liked our main characters. I would consider this more of a young adult novel. The chapters were short but sucked you in and I think the ending was a bit sad but I can see why the author went that way. Also there were a few instances throughout the book that I felt like I was being told the story versus being a part of it. Overall if you are looking for a quick fantasy read, with the smallest hint of spice this could be a good option.

Magic, mermaids, pirates, and romance. This was an enjoyable and fast-paced read. Mira and Peter were excellent main characters with a pure and believable connection. I loved Malvo, along with a few of the other supporting characters in this tale. Mira is a courageous, strong-willed FMC. As the MMC, Peter does not disappoint; he has conviction, devotion, courage, and determination. Together they will take you through this story of magic, betrayal, forgiveness, love, and family. Possible spoilers (in an effort to provide a little insight into the story): Mira is saved from certain death by a seemingly kind witch, with the stipulation that Mira bind herself to the witch forever. It seems like a small price to pay for life, but Mira discovers life is made up of more than just breath and her savior is not what she seems. Peter has devoted his life to working toward a future with Mira, but soon finds it won’t an easy or clear path, as he might have hoped. If you are a fan of fantasy stories reminiscent of fairy tales, this is a book for you; but, make no mistake, this is not a retelling. It is an entirely new adventure with some parallels to a story we all know and love (The Little Mermaid).

"I once heard that memories are the worst form of torture. I wouldn't know.

Okay the first line of this book had me hooked. Hooked like a fish lol. I honestly loved this book. It was def a fast paced book! Definitely a must read for those who love spend and the little mermaid. Definitely an interesting twist on the classic. I devoured it 😭🥹

The book starts off 8 years in the past where orphan Mira was sentenced to death. A witch appears and gives Mira a second chance. She offers Mira a deal, she saves Mira in exchange for her loyalty. She turns Mira into a siren and is now surrounded by sisters just like her who love her as well. Mira has almost everything she’s ever wanted. What about her childhood love/ best friend Peter? 8 years later her long lost best friend/love has reappeared in hopes to rescue Mira from the sea witch. Does he rescue her?

This tale with lots of twists, pirates, witches, goddesses, and an all too familiar redhead with a fin will keep you enthralled until the very end.

This was so sweet and moving. A lost love, bargains with a witch, and forces beyond their comprehension.

Elmira, or Elle, has served the witch who saved her life for 8 years as a siren amongst her sisters, other lost souls who were saved in the same manner. She left everything behind without a second thought, except for the boy with sunshine hair and hazel eyes.

Peter has been a pirate, using his position to do the bidding of the sea witch he made a bargain with to rescue his love, Mira. 8 years he must hunt treasure for her, and then he may take Mira with him...if she chooses him.

Of course, nothing in life is simple or easy. Mira begins to learn the true nature of the sea witch while also learning that Peter is a very different man than the boy she left behind...yet he is still the same. A promise kept and love held onto, across the world and time, he has come for her.

Can Peter convince her to come with him willingly? Will Mira see the deception in front of her from someone she loves? Find out in A Cursed Covenant.

In a Cursed Covenant, we follow the story of Elmira - a siren, and Peter - a pirate. After Elmira accepts a deal with a witch named Ophelia to evade her death, the next 8 years of her life are spent under the witches command, learning to use her magic - but not to the full extent. Peter, unbeknownst to Elmira, has spent the last 8 years fulfilling Ophelia’s requests in order to free Elmira - but will Ophelia hold up her end of the bargain?

A Cursed Covenant gave off Little Mermaid vibes - and I am LIVING FOR IT. I loved Leigh’s use of a dual POV, and every page captivated me! I loved seeing Elmira grow and gain more confidence. Leigh’s writing style is wonderful, and her descriptions are absolutely amazing. Short chapters made this a super easy and enjoyable read!

At 184 pages this took me just over 2 hours to read. With sirens, witches, pirates and love - what isn’t there to enjoy!

I received an Advanced Reader copy of this book, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

8/10.

Adventurous, tragic and full of magic.

Mermaids, pirates, witches, and magic are always guaranteed to produce a great story. This was no exception.

After accepting the life of a siren to escape death, Elmira has resigned to never seeing her love again. She has found solace in a sisterhood of others like her. After eight years, the boy with hazel eyes and sunshine hair has found her. He is no longer the boy she remembers, but a terrifying pirate.

Told from two points of view, this was a fast-paced read. A small amount of spice, a lot of adventure. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Once Upon a Time, Little Mermaid, Maleficent and any other fairytale.

I was privileged to read this as an ARC reader before it was released and will give my honest review of it!

This book was a loose reimagining of the Little Mermaid. The author is great at creating a mental image, allowing the reader to fully enter her world. In fact, I can envision an expansion within this world leading to other books. The book begins with a lot of descriptive back story and world building. I felt that it moved a little slowly at times, but once the story hit fifty percent, I flew through the book.

I loved the dual POVs from Mira and Peter! The FMC was kind and endearing & I loved how the MMC was completely in love with her and would do anything to get her back. “I promise to hold your heart, I promise to give you mine. I promise, as long as I am able, I will be by your side. I’ll be your promise, forever.”

If you're looking for Fantasy, this hits the mark. If you're looking for a solid Romantasy, you will be missing a fully fleshed out love story and spice. This is an HEA for both main characters.

I loved this book. It captured me immediately with the epilogue, drawing me into the main Character and her Story. I appreciated the characters of Mira and Peter both individually and during different life stages. The supporting characters were all fully developed and unique. I loved the writing style, it was engaging and flowed beautifully. The story carried me along with the tide. There were a few familiar elements from the Little Mermaid and Peter Pan, but it wasn’t a retelling, just little glimpses that made me feel a fondness for the characters and story. I enjoyed the elemental components and was enraptured by the descriptions and insights of life underwater. It was a unique stand-alone novel. I’m so pleased to have been sent an ARC, and I’m thoroughly delighted at both the quality of the writing and the story. I’ve not read anything by Leigh Ferguson prior to this book, but will definitely be seeking out more. Highly recommended!

I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Elmira is about to be executed. She looks among the sea of people for the boy she loves. Instead she is rescued by the witch Ophelia. One life left behind exchanged for a new life as a siren with a life debt. Eight years pass and Elmira and her "sisters" live a good life. That is until the boy she left behind has found her.
Peter, unknowingly to Elmira, has been working to pay off her life debt. A deal made with the witch. The time is up and he wants Elmira to be free of the witch. Ophelia has other plans. Now Peter, his friend Malvo, and Elmira must work to not only free her of this debt, but also to stop the nefarious plans Ophelia has in store.
Witches, pirates, sirens, wave sprites and a spicy scene to boot. A love story with an HEA. The characters made you root for them. Enjoyable read that I wouldn't mind reading again in the future.

I appreciate those rare occasions where you can tell that you will luv a book after the 1st chapter. This was one of those books! I was immediately intrigued as my interest in the story line and characters was sustained the entire time. The love connection between the 2 main characters was also so beautifully portrayed and at times intense. I enjoyed the supporting characters, twists and turns, and moments of heartbreak which added additional depth to the story line. I only wish that there was more background information on the characters. I wanted to see more growth from their journey to the current timespan. However, this was a novella that kept me wanting more in the best of ways. I enjoyed this adventure and felt the connection between the characters. How can you not fall for a love story between a siren and a pirate? The writing was excellent, the storyline engaging, and the characters where interesting. Loved this one!❤️

Mira and Peter fell in love as orphans until the day Mira was to be hung for committing a crime. On that day, she was saved by a mysterious witch who promises to save her in exchange for a life debt. Ophelia turns Mira into a siren and unbeknownst to her Peter has spent the last 8 years trying to find her and working as a pirate to release her from her debt. What will happen now that the 8 years on his deal are nearly up?

This books was okay. It felt lacking. There was potential and I read it all, but it felt like it should have had a love triangle and been pushed into two books. It drove me nuts how flat the characters’ emotions were. You can’t love someone for years, see them again and instantly fall out of love, then back in. A character who was supposedly their BEST friend would die and they’d be over it so fast I got whiplash.

What a great story, a little similar to The Little Mermaid but so much better. I could barely put it down. It has a new spin on magic, sirens, pirates and witches. The main characters were easy to like and developed over the course of the story. They each grew into themselves, especially Mira, no longer a scared little girl but a powerful siren.

The side characters were well developed and had very unique personalities and quirks. I would have liked a little more info on the siren sisters, how they were chosen, maybe a graphic with their hierarchy.

Was a super easy and enjoyable standalone read. Had many twists, you never really knew what would happen next. I recommend

I loved the idea of this book; a loose retelling of The Little Mermaid, but instead of becoming human, she takes a deal to become a siren.

However, this book felt rushed. When I started reading it I felt like I was reading a book from the middle, not the beginning. So much is happening in this book and it’s hard to guess what will happen, but there was not a lot of character development.

The love interest between Mira & Peter felt a bit off for me. They haven’t seen each other in 8 years & yet they’re still madly in love? I would have liked more development between the two, or more build up. I’d of loved to read more about the 8 years spent apart too. I felt like we just jumped in head first with this story.

It was an intriguing idea, I just wish I would have gotten more of it!

Thank you Leigh Ferguson for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Brought together as orphans promising to keep each other safe, Peter and Elmira are separated and have to find each other again. Elmira has traded her life to a witch in a magical contract, while Peter has become a Pirate in order to find the love of his life.

Through the various trials they endure to make their way back to each other, they find out the magical contract they're trying to escape may be harder than anticipated.

"I promise to hold your heart. I promise to give you mine. I promise...as long as I am able...I will be by your side."

If you enjoy quick fantasy reads, this is for you. Told in dual POV, we have magic, wave sprites, mermaids, goddesses and other magical coven of the earth woven together to give us a sweet love story between Peter and Mira.

I received this e-book as an ARC, and this is my honest review of the book.

A cursed covenant was truly a breath of fresh air to read amongst my usual reads. It gives off childhood girl fairytales coming true and gives allll the warm + fuzzy feelings. The dual point of views are not my usual preference but this author made them work. Lots of twists and turns which led to this being a one night read for me.

The promises!!! Y'all so dang sweet + completely swoon worthy. Just the idea that the main characters truly belonging to each other even after the time gap is enough to make me believe in allil the good in the world. Although this won't take the number one spot on my reading list, it is one that I wouldn't mind re-reading. The magic was so entertaining to read also and it gave off Disney vibes! I'd recommend this book mainly to someone looking for a light hearted + quick paced read.
