Sister Wendy Beckett--host of the beloved PBS art series--shares her seventy-five favorite works of art, including works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, van Gogh, and Vermeer, among many others.
Sister Wendy Beckett was a South African-born British art expert, Roman Catholic nun, and contemplative hermit who became an unlikely celebrity during the 1990s, presenting a series of acclaimed art history documentaries for the BBC.
I picked up this book thinking that I needed more background in famous works of art. I was not disappointed with the beautiful works chosen by Sister Wendy. There is a wide variety of sculpture, paintings, ancient art and other objects. The short explanations were clear, but i wished for a bit more. Great introduction to classic art.
Not a very heavy tome but instead a run through a variety of Sister Wendy's personal favorite artworks. I enjoyed seeing what she chose and why. I love her observations and the way she encapsulated her questions about the artwork easily and without fuss. I decided to read this book upon hearing of her death. Sister Wendy, you did good work.
This was a beautiful and interesting book. What I like was the entries were her favorites and not all the famous paintings you get in every other book - i.e. the Mona Lisa. No sign of it here thank goodness.
Exceptionally helpful book in helping one cultivate the art of seeing even if her favorite art is not mine. I appreciated all the works included and was blest by her insights.
