Mikela has done everything she can to gain back the favor of the gods. But when the rest turn their backs on her, the God of Death resurfaces after decades to make her an offer. The risk is a gruesome death.
Immortal Passing is a fast-paced, genre-bending novel that had me sucked in from the first chapter. The world and the characters are so richly described that it’s easy to picture the book happening in front of you. I truly felt as though I was a spectator while I was reading.
The novel had me feeling the full spectrum of emotion - happiness, rage, depression, anxiety, serenity, bliss, shock, disgust, etc. Some events in the book are absolutely brutal while others are beyond heartwarming and wholesome. Despite the ups and downs, Immortal Passing didn’t feel like a rollercoaster; everything fits well together and the story flows smoothly. Ess also wrote just enough to tie up this book at a good place, but also left enough open to interpretation so that they could write a sequel or spinoff if they so choose.
My favorite thing about this book was the platform that it gives to LGBTQIA+ individuals and polyamorous and asexual relationships. These are not the main theme of Immortal Passing, but they do play an important part in the novel. When reading through the different reactions to certain characters’ orientations or relationships, I found myself confronting uncomfortable stereotypes while also learning why those stereotypes were incorrect. I also learned a lot without feeling like I was learning. I applaud Ess for choosing to use this work as a platform for/representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals; writers like them are necessary and do so much to move our society closer toward acceptance and understanding.
In sum, I thoroughly enjoyed Immortal Passing and cannot wait to see what Ess writes next, whether it’s in this story arc or another!
I was given an ARC free in return for a review. Another un-put-downable story by Ess! I was hooked and had to keep reading to see what happened, whilst trying (and failing) to take longer so it wasn't over so fast. The chracters gave off greek gods vibes, which I loved.
This has LGBTQIA+ themes, with non-binary / gay / lesbian / bi/pan-sexual / polyamourous / asexual characters. There is no Spice/Smut. Warning for Majorish character deaths that you want to hate the author for.
