Trembling and choking back tears, I seethed. “Next time you proclaim to love me, do it on your knees or not at all.”

Rating: 4/5
Spice: 4/5
POV: Dual 1st

I am such a big fan of Raven’s writing. Her prose can be so poetic but yet, it is never over the top. And the spice? Whew, it is never lacking!

Hiding her real identity as a half-fae by living on the outskirts of her village, Lilly is on her own after the passing of her father. With a human king nicknamed the Fairy Butcher, she always makes sure her pointed ears are covered. Her simple farm life is, however, disrupted by her discovering a wounded soldier on her land. She nurses him back to health and as he helps her around the farm while recovering, feelings and desire blossom between them. Until the arrival of more soldiers revealed his identity and shattered her illusion of happiness.

Lilly was a gentle FMC with a naivety that spoke of her upbringing. I liked her quiet strength and her willingness to fight for the side of her she has never known. Not an always successful endeavor due to her feelings for Soren, but she definitely tried. I wanted to scream at her a few times to resist him though 🤣

Soren. Ren. The Fairy Butcher. He was a man OBSESSED. Because Lilly was a flower nymph, it made me question the sincerity of his feelings for her. Was it really love or lust driving him? BUT— he did his groveling and that was satisfying to read 😌 A King crawling on his knees? Yes, please.

OBSESSIVE MALE LEAD!! I liked it, even if improvements could have been made with the plot and character development. No complains on the sensual bedroom scenes, it was HOT.

SOREN's reason for waging a war against the fae left me severely conflicted. This isn't my first PNR Fae romance, and I've read dark versions. Frankly, his reason for instigating a war just wasn't strong enough and I'm viewing this from the perspective of thousands of innocent lives compared to one. Unfortunately, Soren's character development left me wanting. Apart from his obsessed behavior, he didn't leave an impression or made me feel like he was wise or etc. No Aura. Just a 2D male who can't let go of an alluring nymph.

That doesn't sound very sexy at all, does it?

As much as I have an obsession kink, I wish SOREN didn't read like a mindless zombie intent on sex all the time. The author should do more research on what hard core possessive, ruthless alpha-holes male leads are truly like. Soren paled in comparison, more like a clinging child to his mother's breast kinda vibe.

LILLY was gentle and everything her nature proclaims her to be. She had spark and fight, compared to SOREN. I liked her.

OVERALL there was plenty of missed opportunities for good angst. This was technically enemies to lovers!! And it came off as just average. Still, it wasn't too bad if you judge it at surface entertainment value.

What started off as a potentially good story started going downhill for me fast.

Some things didn't make sense to me, it seemed like things were added to the story just for shiggles and didn't really fit into the story. The fmc making the mmc crawl to her, her continuously slapping him, her personality from how she was raised and how her character is in the beginning and all of a sudden her personality completely changes, the mmc bowing and groveling to the fae. The story didn't flow for me naturally

I enjoyed reading the story of Ren and Lily and how their tumultuous relationship would end. The story captured how two lives burned for each other and the challenges they faced. Good read.
