I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I love this series and this was another awesome read. At the end of the previous books things are left in a perilous position and I was eager to start this one and see how the story continues. This was an amazing read, so many twists and turns and new directions.
The kingdom is on unstable footing after the attack, then there are the Kidaa who approach a border ship were Rhys is, Dressa's wife Lesander whose secrets came to light, Eti and Imorie who are trying to save his family. There is so much going on in this book, it's one of those reads that definitely kept my attention.
I really liked seeing the direction the story took and how all the characters are dealing with everything. I liked seeing it all play out. There is a lot of politics in this book, but it's all very interesting and I like the twists and turns that took me by surprise. This book had some great reveals and the way it ends just makes me wish the next book was here already as I want to know what happens next.
To summarize: Another great installment in this series! There is so much going on and it's an amazing read. I liked the reveals, the twists and turns, as well as seeing everything play out. I like reading about all the characters and the multiple points of view work so well here. If you like science fiction books with intricate plot lines and politics I can definitely recommend this series. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book!
I struggled with this whole series story line. Everything they did was a lie and trick to the kingdom.
As far as the author and writing style, I felt like there was way too much happening in between conversations. It's like someone would take/ask a question and you would have to wade through 5 minutes of internal dialog before they answered.
I feel like I'm just not that invested in the story anymore sadly. This book only started to interested me at about 75%. I just wanted to read about the Kidaa stuff, which I never would have expected starting out with these series, but the rest of the storylines just aren't doing it for me anymore.
I don't like the relationship Dressa and Lesander have anymore, because it used to be light and fun. Now nothing seems light and fun in these series. I was rooting for Eti and Imorie, but they don't really convey happiness either. Maja and Zhang didn't really get any screentime. I did enjoy Iata's romance, but that also didn't get a lot of screentime. I'm not rooting for Rhys and Misha, don't really know why. I just didn't feel it, I guess. And I really don't like the fact that I have to be suspicious of everyone and everything, because everything is mysterious and can be a plot twist. That especially goes for Koldari. There are so many hints that he's evil in some way, but there is no basis for that and does not get resolved at all.
I also agree with other reviews that there was a lot of over-explaining and too much happening between conversations. I feel like I got what I needed from a chapter just by reading the dialogs and skipping all of the thought processes and descriptions of even more new characters and places. It's just a bit too much.
Anyway, it's cool to see that everything is finally coming together, but it's just not that fun to read. Everyone character is constantly stressing and doubting themselves. Would be great if there had been some lighter scenes to mix things up or maybe just less stuff happening all around.
This and the previous book both felt like the writing wasn't thoroughly edited. The overall story and characters remain great, but scenes went too long and even action moments felt slow. There is a lot of detail repetition and a lot of over-explaining on details that are already easy to intuit by the reader. My advice to NC would be to trust your readers more. If we've followed you this deep into the universeyouve created, reward our intelligence by SHARING the story rather than explaining it to us.
We finally get to the 'enemies turned lovers' plot point that was promised! Granted the author wrote in a love at first sight start to Dressa and Lesander's relationship, but it took until this book for me to buy it.
