Flight from Eden: The Origins of Modern Literary Criticism and Theory

Steven Cassedy takes aim at two of the most enduring myths of modern that it is secular, and that it is new and autonomous. He argues that though modern criticism is often forbiddingly scientific and technical, the modern critic remains something of a mystic. Every school of modern criticism—from structuralism to postmodern criticism—rests on a faith in an "Eden," an irreducible essence, a myth, like the common myth that there is an intrinsic distinction between "poetic" language and "ordinary" language. The modern critic attempts to abandon all mystical faith; this is the "flight from Eden." But it is always in vain.

It is traditionally assumed that modern literary criticism and theory came from France, and relatively recently. In fact, according to Cassedy, the entire modern critical consciousness was already formed by the early twentieth century in the minds of writers who were primarily neither professional critics nor philosophers, but poets. Some were French (Mallarmé, and Valéry); others were not (Rilke, Bely, and the Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov). In them we find the same Edenic faith, the same effort to abandon it, and the same failure of that effort.

کتاب «گریز از بهشت» از جمله کتاب های لازم در مسائل نقد ادبی امروز هست. اهمیت این کتاب در ناگفته هایی ست که در کتاب های دیگر نمی توان سراغ گرفت. استیون کسدی، نویسندۀ این کتاب، بسیاری از ناگفته ها را به ویژه در مکتب های زبانشناسی روسی و چکسلواکی تشریح می کند. از حلقۀ فوتوریسم و ساختارگرایی تا فرمالیسم. کلیدی ترین مفاهیم زبانشناسی که در نظریه پردازی های ادبی مؤثر است، در این کتاب تعریف و تشریح گردیده است. از آرای یاکوبسن، شکلوفسکی و مالارمه، هایدگر، پل والری، پل دومان و دیگر متخصصان استفاده شده است.
در مورد زمینه های خوانش، از استعاره، اسطوره، زبان، شمایل شناسی، الهیات، اعداد و ریاضی و هندسه، هستی شناسی صحبت شده است.

شعر نه تنها بر تمامی هنرهای دیگر تقدم دارد، بلکه از تمامی اَشکال گفتار نیز کهن تر است. در حقیقت شعر به اندازه ای قدمت دارد که می توان گفت تقسیم بندی اخیر میان شعر و نثر، از خود شعر برخاسته و به وجود آمده است. این تمایز را می توان دستاورد یک جریان تدریجی در طول زمان دانست که در خلال آن، برخی کیفیت ها از دست رفته است. زبان شعر، زبانی است که هنوز هم سرشار از شکل درونی است، در حالی که زبان نثر، به تناسب از دست دادن شکل درونی، شکل می گیرد. هر چه زبان بیشتر عینیت می باید، کیفیت واقعی خود و شکل درونی خود را بیش تر از دست می دهد. ص 79
