Another funny set of stories about Down Girl and her friend Sit along with a few appearances from Here Kitty Kitty. These books are easy to read and move along quickly. Kids will be laughing the whole way through them at Down Girl's antics.
A humorous easy chapter book told from the dog's point of view. Also a fun book to read aloud. Young readers especially enjoy the time that Down Girl runs into a rabbit while camping and thinks it's a squirrel.
The second book in the series, Down Girl continues his adventures. In this easy chapter book Down Girl drives a car, visits the beach, goes camping and has to deal with The Lady in the White Coat. Told in first dog narrative, Nolan brings to life a dog’s thoughts and reasoning. Black and white illustrations on almost every page add an added touch of humor. Although younger children may not grasp all the situational humor of the story they will nonetheless enjoy these simple and silly stories.
This was an excellent chapter book for younger children to read because there are still pictures throughout, and it wasn't too challenging of a read while it had elements that children would find fun to read about.

Kids who love dogs and outdoor activities will love this chapter book from the dog's point of view. Especially those kids who have naughty dogs will get a few giggles.
I love Down Girl and Sit. They are two dogs that live in neighboring houses and this is a collection of stories about them, as narrated by Down Girl. Down Girl lives with her master, Rruff, and loves it when they go out for a drive. In the first story, Down Girl and Sit and their masters go to the beach and get into all sorts of mischief. They get pulled over on the way because Down Girl keeps kissing the back of Rruff’s head and he keeps swerving into traffic. While at the beach Down Girl and Sit manage to get the car stuck in the sand, roll in some terrible smells (delightful!), bury a ball that belongs to someone else, and eat their masters’ doughnuts. Later, Down Girl and Rruff go camping together – with similar results (bad), and finally Down Girl has to go to the vet. I laughed continuously as I read Down Girl’s tales. They will make perfect sense to any dog lovers, and young readers will enjoy the hilarious places Down Girl takes them. If you aren’t giggling at some point, you’re doing it wrong!
Excerpt: We hadn’t gone very far when I saw Here Kitty Kitty. Here Kitty Kitty is the cat that lives behind me. I don’t like cats. They never stay in their own yards. They are very sneaky and they touch all my stuff.
I leaned into the front seat. I started barking at Here Kitty Kitty.
“Down, Girl!”
Ruff elbowed me, and I fell off my seat. I’m sure it was an accident. I didn’t want Rruff to feel bad about it, so I put my paws on the back of his seat. I kissed him.
Rruff slammed on the brakes.
“Down, Girl!”
He can call me all he wants, but I’m not going to join him in the front seat. It would be rude to leave Sit. (pp. 4-5)
Lucy Nolan, Down Girl and Sit, vol. 2: On the Road (Marshall Cavendish, 2005)
For some reason I didn't have it marked down on the TBR sheet that On the Road was book two of a series, so I read it without reading #1. Which I find annoying, but On the Road is a good enough stand-alone that if you (or your kid) hasn't read the first, it won't be a big deal. Down Girl and Sit are dogs, who assume those are their names because that's what the human who own them say to them most (Sit is Down Girl's next-door neighbor). The two of them are off for a car ride into the country that turns into a camping trip. Funny, unexpected, and kinda sweet. Will definitely hold the interest of beginning readers, and has enough slyness to keep the parents going through the inevitable repeated reads at bedtime. Recommended. *** ½
I read this book to my daughters and they did not get the humor. By the time I had finished the book, I realized that it is referential humor, like Family Circus, and requires that you have seen dogs doing these behaviors for years and know perfectly well why they do them and can then appreciate the humor in a different motivation being supplied.
I know that was all very abstract. Sorry. What I'm trying to show is that this book will only appeal to readers who are far above its stated reading level. It is not the direct humor that elementary readers enjoy.
But as Marshall Cavendish has purchased many of these from Nolan, perhaps readers are buying it in droves and young children can handle high-level referential humor.
This is one of a series of books by Lucy Nolan about Down Girl, her master, Rruff, and her friend, Sit. Down Girl is a dog who tells about her adventures from her perspective. These books are funny! In this book, Down Girl and Sit go to the beach and drive a car, Down Girl and Rruff go camping and meet "the scaries squirrel I have ever seen", and Rruff takes Down Girl to see The Lady in the White Coat. No matter what kind of trouble Down Girl gets into she always puts a positive spin on it. --ML
Hilarious story about 2 friends, Down Girl and Sit, dogs on a quest to keep squirrels and a cat named Here Kitty Kitty out of their yard and from touching their stuff. Told from her own perspective, Down Girl's dream is to live in the car. After many adventures, her dream finally comes true as (much to the dismay of her master, Rruff) they spend one glorious night in the car. My son laughed out loud at this book and it was fun to see him get some of the erroneous observations made by the main character.
Ok here is where I start reading tons of children books! Of course it is for school! I try to read the Blue Bonnet books to my class and this is the first one so far! I have to read light hearted since one of my students mom has a brain tumor!
Funny little book about a dog told from the dog's point of view! Funny how he viewed things so differently than his owner. My kids all seemed to enjoy it and lots of things to write about it!
This book is the blubonnet winner (yay!) and it was soooooo cute and good. I lurved it and it only took me around five minutes to read. It was sooo funny and I liked how the "owner" also told her "down girl" ans since he always said that she assumed that was her name! And she kept getting into trouble with her friends, but they thought they were being perfect little dogs. Just saying—you should read it if you have the chance!
Great second addition to the Lucy Nolan Series Down Girl and Sit! A Very funny book written from the perspective of the dogs Down Girl and Sit Who are Best Friends and about their adventures on the Road with their masters !
The adventures of a happy-go-lucky Irish Setter (Down Girl) and her best friend (Sit) continue with this breezy stand-alone title. Down Girl provides a "dog's-eye view" of car trips, beaches, campsites, and the mysterious Lady in the White Coat. Copious black-and-white illustrations ensure that the text will not overwhelm new readers.
For some reason these children's books are very humorous to me. Maybe because "Down Girl" reminds me so much of my dog, Zek. Story is told from the dogs perspective and the author does a great job of capturing a dogs personality and making it great fun. Highly recommend this book to children who love animals.
I absolutely love this book. It's a great, fast read for reluctant and slower readers. I really love how Lucy Nolan uses the character names in the dialogue of the story. Some of my students have mentioned that it's hard to get used to reading names like Down Gir, Sit and Ruff in dialogue.
This series is so cute and funny. I think this was my favorite of the three. The POV (from the dog!) is so spot-on. Great choice for reluctant readers.
