Light in the Dark
(Moon Harbor #1)
Written by: Kate McWilliams

Light in the Dark captured me the moment I started reading it. I felt that I was arriving in Moon Harbor along with Alex. Kate McWilliams took my hand and lead me into a well-written romantic suspense story that brings two people who had a summer romance twelve years ago for a chance to ignite the love that was lost.

Alex Benning is returning to Moon Harbor after being gone for twelve years. The place she first fell in love only to lose that love at summers end.

Sam Waters has only love one girl and saying goodbye to her was the hardest thing he had ever done, but finding out she was back had him ready to win back the only woman he would ever love.

From their first meeting to lunches, walks and Sam letting his heart tell her how he has never forgotten her, we see through their eyes how much Alex tries to fight her still very strong attraction to Sam and Sam lay his heart at her feet.

But the night she hears something outside then sees a light in the shed, her fear and her call to Sam lead us into the dark side of what has been hiding in Moon Harbor. When she allows Sam to read the letter she found shortly after she arrived things begin to happen. By all appearances, her aunt Carol was in danger and now Alex is in danger.

From young lovers to finding each other again, Alex and Sam reignite their passion for each other and it is as steamy inside the bedroom as it is outside on a hot, humid Maine summer evening.

With support from Sam and her new friends, Theo, Rafael, Sara and Ellie, Alex knows that coming home was the right move. She is beginning to trust, which is a big step for her.

Kate McWilliams has given us characters who hold your interest, can tease and torment with the best and laugh and enjoy each others company. Her description of the town makes you want to pack up the car and take a road trip to Moon Harbor. She’s set up the couple that book two in the series will feature and now that we are all acquainted I can’t wait to revisit Alex and Sam and see how our new couple does.

“I needed to keep him at arms length before I ended up at his feet.”

Steamy, second chance romance set in a small coastal down? Sign me up! Alex returns to Moon Harbor after she inherits her aunt’s cottage. She hasn’t been back since that one glorious summer as a teenager, right before her heart was broken. Sam, the heartbreaker in question, is beyond thrilled to see her again and their chemistry is obvious from the moment they see each other again. Alex doesn’t receive a warm welcome from everyone though, and it soon becomes clear someone is after her. But why?

What a wonderful, satisfying book! Alex and Sam seemingly pick up where they left off, and I loved that they were mature enough not to hang onto the baggage of their younger selves. I had no idea where the mystery was going, even though I recognized the foreshadowing of it once I finished. I would’ve liked to have more of this book actually - there were scenes and events that I would’ve liked to see expanded but overall, this is a lovely read and I recommend it!

I was so excited to be selected to read Kate’s debut novel and it didn’t disappoint! I sped through just having to know what happens next.

After the death of her aunt, Alex reluctantly returns to her hometown and comes face to face with the boy who broke her heart and a stalker threatening her family.

It’s spicy and thrilling and I enjoyed it to the very end. Looking forward to book number 2!

Light in the Dark by Kate McWilliams

description

This is the first Kate McWilliams book I read and I have to say I'm really happy with the outcome and also excited with the other books of the series that'll come, specially with all the foreshadowing she put there with the next couple.

Alex just got back to the small town of Moon Harbor after inheriting her aunt's house. Moon Harbor is the only place Alex really felt at home, because she had Sam... They dated during the summer and they were each other's firsts. Alex was planning on making the small town her permanent refuge until Sam broke her heart to join the army. Alex rebuilt herself, became independent, but she never really felt at home. So when her aunt suddenly passes, she decided to go back.

Well, I loved both characters. They really grow up on the past decade and Alex doesn't hold a grudge against Sam. They are adults and they act like it. I also loved that Sam owned up his mistake of pushing her away and asked for forgiveness and another chance without being overly insistent, even when there's someone trying to hurt Alex for reasons unbeknownst to any of them. As the threatening letters start to pile up, Sam decides to take matters on his own hands and find out what's happening once and for all.

Kate did an awesome job by giving Alex friends other than Sam. I honestly dislike when authors isolate the main character in order to make them completely dependent of each other. There's nothing better than a group of friends in books, specially when they all have amazing personalities.

Also, I loved the world building. The whole city and its citizens, along with their businesses are well presented, giving us the impression that we really are living through Sam and Alex, which is something I really like on novels. However, I felt like the suspense building was a bit predictable. Don't get me wrong, tho. It's still really nice, because Kate did great on depicting how stressful and terrifying it is to live in constant fear that something is going to happen, but the outcome was something that I saw coming.

I'm keeping my expectations high for Sara and Theo on the upcoming book. Their banter is TO DIE FOR.

Light in the Dark is a second chance, friends-to-lovers, romance suspense that you'll definitely love!

There is more to this story than a sweet second chance romance, it has a dark and twisted story to unravel as well. I was caught up in these two being reunited, their chemistry and sexual tension continued to build from their first encounter. Just when I thought I was in a comfy point in the story I’d be hit with the darker side within. Which pulled me deeper into the roller coaster ride of emotions and peaks of danger.

Alex has just moved back to her hometown; one she ran from years ago. She left with some painful memories and needing to move forward in her life. I think she did well, she had her own business and is a strong woman, but, despite this, I don’t think she really moved on from her past feelings for Sam. Everything happened so fast, she seemed to fit in perfectly, made friends, and managed to reconnect with Sam easily. Which is a lot in the short time she was there.

Sam still lives in the town, he also has painful but fond memories of his first love. His immediate re-attraction to her was sweet and I felt, more than her, he never really got over their past relationship. I loved that moment when he saw her in the bar how he immediately knew what he had been missing and what he wanted again.

I enjoyed their story so much. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with them in Theo and Sara’s story, Light Me Up. Sara and Theo’s banter and looks are both amusing and steamy; these two will be fun to read about.

Light in the Dark is a second chance at love with a kicker of suspense, and I was all in for it all! Alex has come back to the small town that meant a lot to her after her aunt left a cottage to her, and she really needs a fresh start. Little did she know that she would run into her first love, Sam, and it did a number on her heart because he was the one who got away. Sam is enjoying his single life, but his life is thrown into turmoil when he sees the girl who got away. Their connection is still there, but stronger since they're adults these days as they spend time together. Just when things are heating up, things are popping off, making for a lot of twists coming in hot. I absolutely LOVED this story, and I swear I even smelled the sea air while reading since I was actually experiencing it while reading. I'm telling y'all, everyone needs this amazing book in their lives so they can see what happened & how it all panned out. I'm super excited to read more by this author as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Thought this story was so enjoyable to read! Alex is such a likable character and the protectiveness of Sam is swoon worthy! Together their chemistry was on fire and their story was filled with suspense and drama, I was left wondering what was next. Add in some great support characters friends that are more like family made for a great story!

Disclosure: I received an advance copy in return for an honest review

I'm not a regular romance reader, but once in a while I tend to read and enjoy the genre. As romance stories go, this is a really solid piece of art. The setting is vivid and charming, the characters have humor and tons of personality, and the mystery is perfectly executed. I binged it in a day, and enjoyed every minute of it.

Highly recommend!

The synopsis promised more than the story could deliver. I couldn't get into the story and it ended up feeling more like a chore than pleasure. I think it was all to perfectly tied up for my liking.

I love character driven stories and it fell flat here. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Something about Sam pissed me off and annoyed the hell out of me. The chemistry between the characters felt forced and I didn't feel them connect.

I prefer when the author uses the writing technique show don't tell because it let's me as a reader get the whole experience. I found this story lacking in that department.

The buildup until the secrets were revealed couldn't keep my interest and it felt anticlimactic. I just couldn't get past the things that were bothering me and that took away the pleasure of reading the story. I do believe that readers that can see past the small things are going to enjoy this romantic suspense story, I just couldn't.

I'm so confused

I'm so sick and tired of the trope where girl says no and man says I'm not giving up. No means no.

Slight spoilers

Why in the world did this need to have murder and attempted murder in it? The plot device wasn't even that good. It came out of nowhere. Definitely not something I'd ever read again.

overall a pretty interesting story but also forgettable??? i didn’t really form a connection with either of the characters and i kinda wish we got to see a bit more flashbacks of them from high school but they were cute. also the whole mystery thing was cool but was also very predictable and anticlimactic to me.

I'm teetering between 2.25 and 2.5 stars

If you told me Lucy Score wrote this, I would believe you. It felt so similar to her writing style. Unfortunately... I'm not a huge Lucy Score fan (PLEASE DON'T HURT ME).

Set in Moon Harbor Maine, our perky lead, Alex, moves into her deceased aunt's cottage. She was born in Moon Harbor and left 12 years ago after having her heartbroken by Sam. Sam was in the Marines and now he makes furniture out of wood. He has a gorgeous German Shepherd who honestly should have had his own POV chapters. Alex and Sam rekindle their romance and it's pretty sweet. There was no slow burn, so if you like the insta-love you will definitely like this book. The main plot in this book is that someone keeps coming onto Alex's property and she is getting freaked out. I will say, I was not expecting the turns this book took. It started light and predictable and then WHAM-BAM-BIPPITY-BLAH suddenly there are serious dark undertones!! It was pretty intense.

Admittedly, the book read a bit like a fan fiction but that didn't bother me so much. What I had the biggest problem with is that this book read like it was written by a person. Instead of feeling like catching up with friends and reading up on their lives, it truly felt like I was reading a book and I'm not sure if that makes sense but it was jarring and took me out of the fictional world quit easily. Some of the things Sam said were.... gross and not something a guy would say. For instance, in chapter nine, Sam says, "her dimples slayed me" what does that even mean? Who says that? What? But then in the same paragraph he talks about his thin cargo shorts becoming tight because she is wearing frayed denim shorts. It's just... strange. He talks about her body that if a guy ever said that in real life, every girl would call him a creep and slap him across the face.

Do I recommend? I would have to really know your taste in books and what you are looking for. What didn't work for me might actually be what would make you give it 5 stars. *insert shrugging emoji here*

When Alex moved to Moon Harbour to put down roots, she didn’t expect to run into her summer fling and first love. It’s been twelve years since Sam broke both their hearts but they’re older and wiser and the fire between them has never been hotter. Alex just wants to settle down and see if they can make something work, but the little township is hiding some ugly secrets and someone is dangerously unhappy Alex came to Moon Harbour.

I liked how while Sam and Alex have painful history, there’s no resentment or a secret baby, just an acknowledgment that they were two teenagers who made poor choices. Now they’re together again, they have a chance to build a future, if they can shake the growing sense of threat. It was awesome that Alex put up boundaries around finding her own feet before starting a relationship and Sam not only respected those, he communicated his own as well, even if he did get a tad overprotective.

Backing up the romance are a cast of new friends (some clearly setting up for their own book) and some background villagers, all happily matchmaking Sam and Alex from day one. Now, there are a couple of plot threads that don’t go anywhere (at least in this book) and a few unanswered questions but nothing huge.

It’s low angst, open door, and on the shorter side. If you’re looking for a second chance romance with plenty of sexual tension and a side of danger, this one deserves a look!

Light in the Dark quickly captured my imagination as Alex and Sam reunite after years apart, and still with broken hearts because of the way they parted so long ago. Seconds chances don’t come around all that often so it’s up to Sam and Alex to make the most of finding each other again… or leaving all the pain, and the possibilities in their past and walk away once again.

Their journey is full of tears, laughter, passion… and danger as the past rears its ugly head once again threatening to end that second chance at getting love right almost before it’s begun.

I enjoyed Light in the Dark. The writing is smooth, the plot interesting and engaging, and the characters realistic as they face the past and all of the pain, anger, and truth that it holds. I love discovering new authors, and Kate McWilliams’ debut story (and series) satisfied every need I have for a steamy, romantic suspense story. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next title in this series.

If you love getting to know an author’s work from the very beginning – love a good story with relatable characters – a story that draws you in and doesn’t let go… then you’d enjoy Light in the Dark.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher/blog tour event. The opinions expressed in this review are my own – good, bad, or indifferent. I was not financially compensated for this review and no expectation of a positive review was promised.*

Light in the Dark ☀️
➖rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️’s
➖steam level: 3/5 🌶’s

"All these years spent alone, all this time spent in my comfort zone, and I had nothing to show for it but survival. Survival was something to be proud of, but it wasn't a life."

Small town romances are so so great, but there's something about small coastal town romances that just causes serotonin to seep directly into my pores 😌

Set in Moon Harbor, Maine, Light in the Dark follows Alex as she returns to the town she once left behind. Living in her late aunt's cottage and looking for a fresh start, imagine Alex's surprise when she bumps into her first love, Sam, on her first day in town. Between meddling friends, cute dates, and a suspenseful mystery surrounding Alex's family, this second
chance romance will have you hooked from beginning to end!

My love for Alex & Sam is honestly out of this world. I really liked that despite what happened between them years ago, they didn't have any animosity towards each other when they reunited. You can feel the chemistry bouncing between them from that very first encounter and I honestly just really loved the maturity and communication they had overall. Alex was
also incredibly relatable for me, so seeing her finally find that sense of belonging that she was looking for really warmed my heart!

All in all, this was a really great read! If you're someone who enjoys a little suspense with their romance, then I highly recommend picking this one up! It'll keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time 💗

Moon Harbor #1

Intriguing, compelling, sizzling debut novel that kept me interested from beginning to end. I look forward to reading many more books by this author.

What I liked:
* Alexandra “Alex” Benning: computer whiz, website designer, business owner, inherits aunt’s home and property and moves to Moon Harbor, Maine to see if it is her place to settle
* Sam Waters: ex-military, carpenter, brother, good friend, realizes that he wants to rekindle his relationship with Alex and never let her go
* That the second chance romance is believable
* The way the relationship between Alex and Sam was so comfortable as they rekindled their romance
* Sam’s friends Theo and Raf
* Sara and Ellie, the friends that Alexandra made
* The setting
* The mystery and suspense portion of the story
* That Alex found out who her father was
* The twist and revelations that surprised me
* Reading an enjoyable book by a new-to-me author
* That the author took the leap of faith to write this book and see it published
* Knowing that there is at least another book to look forward to in this series

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are evil people in the world as bad as the ones in this story

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to the author and IndiePenPR for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Dark no More…

Sometimes we find the right person at the wrong time, but this steamy, second-chance romance brings these star-crossed lovers back together again over a decade later.

Alex is a sweet woman who suffers in silence over the death of her mother and the recent death of her aunt. After inheriting her aunt’s home in a small oceanside village, Alex returns to the town where she felt love for the first time. She never expected to run into Sam, the boy who stole her heart over a decade before. And more surprising, she never expected the former military hero, now carpenter, to still harbor feelings for her. Sam was never able to move on from Alex, and once he sees her in a local bar, he’s determined to win her heart again.

The book takes a darker turn when Alex discovers hidden notes her aunt received, stashed away in the cottage Alex now owns. Suddenly this peaceful little town isn’t so quaint when there’s a person who wished harm on Alex’s family. Together with Sam, this young couple digs deep into discovering the ugly truth hidden deep in their town’s most elite.

This was a slow-burn, second-chance, small town, steamy romance packed full of mystery, heat, and suspense. By the end of this novel, you’ll be dressing nautical, house hunting for a coastal cottage, and using a periscope to spot your own Sam walking along the beach.

Fantastic read. My rating is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Rating: 4.5 rounded to 5 stars

Second chance trope isn't one of my favorites, but it worked here. The author was able to show the growth of both of the main characters and how they changed throughout the years. They proved that their first encounter was basically right people at the wrong time and they made it work when the time was right.
I liked the suspense and how it was woven into the story. Don't be fooled by the small town part of the story - it's not that quaint in there. But there are some small town staples like gossip mill, some drama, found family.

I also appreciate

My only complaint is more so related to editing. Some chapters are hopping from one POV to another and I think it should be marked clearly. There is no visual distinction, when such a change occurs, yet it's clearly marked at the beginning of each chapter. Of course, the reader is able to get it after reading the first sentence, but it's such an easy thing to improve that it shouldn't be overlooked.

Where can I find a Sam!!!

I loved this story. I'm not big on seconds chance romances but the blurb got my attention. I'm glad that this isn't one of those stories where the ex's were bitter and then we got over it and fell in love again. Sometimes we make mistakes when we're young I'm glad that they both were able to realize that and then seize the opportunity to be happy when it was entered itself. Alex has spent years building walls around herself and it was great watching the walls crumble because she felt safe finally. Sam, the man who never got over his first love. I love how compassionate Sam was with her. The perfect blend of alpha male and respectful. I also love this little chosen family and I can't wait to see more from them. I read the series out of order by accident and I'm glad I decided to read book one. Both books in this series are awesome. Kate, you sure know how to write a leading man and your leading ladies are phenomenal as well. Read this book! Oh and the spice?! 😏😏 the spice is well done and didn't feel forced. The relationship building definitely comes first and I respected that. Anyway, read this!

3.5 ⭐️- This was a small town, second chance romance that jumped right into the action.

Upon her aunt’s death and inheriting her cottage, Alex returns to Moon Harbor where she decides she’d like to build a new home for herself since it’s one of the few places she holds fond memories of. It also just happens to be where she fell in love for the first time 12 years ago and had her heart broken. Sam has resigned himself to bachelorhood while regretting the “one that got away”. That is until he spots the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen one day at the local watering hole.

I enjoyed the bit of suspense involved with the mystery in the plot. There was a lot of steam and dirty talk here and it works with these characters. The only reason I didn’t give it 4 stars was that I’m not a big fan of “insta-love” whether it’s first chance or second chance and this felt a bit like that for me. Despite that, I truly enjoyed this story and it was an easy read for me. I liked learning about the other characters and am looking forward to Theo and Sara’s enemies to lovers story next!

After her aunt passed away Alex returned to Moon Harbor, the place that not only held her happiest memories but her heartbreak as well, looking for a new beginning. She certainly next expected that the boy who broke her heart would also be there or the danger she found herself in.

Sam loved Alex but when their dreams were taking them in different directions he realized that he didn’t handle it in the best way. He would like to right the wrongs of the past which means not only showing Alex that he is not the same man who hurt her but finding out who is behind the threats against and why before it is too late.

This story finds a great balance between suspense and romance and not only do the characters of Sam and Alex draw you in but there is a great cast of secondary characters that leave you wanting more of this locale and their stories.

Light in the Dark is a captivating novel from Kate McWilliams. It’s a perfect mix of romance and suspense.

After inheriting her aunt’s house, Alex struggles with starting her new life in the small harbour town that holds so many memories and family secrets for her.

Bumping into her ex-boyfriend, Sam, on her first night in town, it brought up a lot of old feelings from her past, but makes her see that there’s still the spark between them from all those years ago.

After uncovering family secrets, Alex realizes that she needs to lean on Sam to stay safe, and uncover the truth.

I loved all the characters in this book. Sam and Alex are such a great second chance romance couple, and they are written in a way that has you rooting for them from the start. Light in the Dark is a page turner, and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

This book was everything you could look for in a grumpy-sunshine second chance romance. I found myself on the edge of my seat multiple times through out the book whether it be trying to solve the mystery of the letters or during the sexy heat charged scenes between Alex and Sam.
Anyone that loves grumpy ex-marine men that are only sweet to their family and love interest needs not look any further. Sam will fit your desires to the T, and Alex is no damsel either.
This book had me turning page after page without regard to the real world. I would reccomend picking up this book and preparing for a wild ride from Sam and Alex to the brief snip-its of Theo and Sara, you will not be dissapointed.
10/10 would reccomend!
I was also a volunteer ARC reader for this book, but this is my honest review.

Beautiful Story

I loved everything about this story. The second chance at love and the mystery of Moon Harbor. Sam is such a gentleman and protective soul when it comes to Alex. She is a warrior who has had a tough upbringing and has not let her walls down. Getting to see that side of her be expelled and brought down is amazing to read unfold.

Things take a wild turned when Alex comes back to her hometown after her aunt passes away and she inherits the cottage. A cottage that contains note threatening letters and come to affect her security. Sam is a retired marine, now a carpenter who has not opened himself to settle down and be emotionally available for someone until his highschool sweetheart comes back. He is determined to do anything to her her back and keep her safe. To not repeat his past mistake and truly be the one for her.

Steamy, small town suspense

Full of sweet and sexy moments and seaside small town vibes, this romantic suspense will keep you reading as you ebb and flow between wanting to figure out the mystery and wanting to get to all thos gorgeous steamy scenes. Sam & Alex's chemistry pulls you in from their chance re-encounter many years after their love first fell apart. Seeing Alex's hesitation to jump into a relationship and Sam's patience as she found her footing made them an easy couple to root for. The underlying mystery gave me some modern day Murder She Wrote vibes and I loved every second of it. If you love romantic suspense, especially set in a small town, you'll love this book!

Alex moves back to the town she was born in after her Aunt passes away and leaves her property to Alex. Alex runs back into her old bf, Sam, and they rekindle their relationship. But there is a secret that is threatening to be broken. Will Alex be able to handle the truth?

This was a fun read for my first Kate McWilliams book. The story was a little predictable, but Kate was still able to keep me hooked throughout! I wish we had a little more background into the time Alex and Sam had together when they were 18, but there was enough given to still follow the plot. The ending had a nice little twist with the who done it. It was a fun read and I am super excited to read Sara and Theo’s story next!

Kate has knocked it out of the park with her debut novel. I can be a little picky with the books I read, and find it very frustrating if they aren’t written/edited well. But Kate has the perfect, modern voice that fits romance books flawlessly. Her descriptions are so well that you can easily picture everything in your head and follow the characters movements. While she does have some of the normal romance cliches, the story flows enough that they don’t bother me at all.

If you like romance, you must read this one. My only concern is now waiting for the rest of the books in the series. Haha!
