This is the inspiring story of an African American whose athletic and entrepreneurial achievements -- from being the first black quarterback and head coach in the National Football League to founding one of the first all-black investment securities companies -- were equaled by his courage in confronting racial barriers.
Didn’t know about Fritz Pollard prior to this book but as an NFL fan, history lover and Akron, OH resident it seems like I should have.
I found this book well researched, written, and enjoyable to read.
The book does a great job at delving into Fritz Pollard’s place as an African American trying to negotiate race relations through his academic, football, and business careers.
His life is no fairy tale for sure.
The book is poignant even today as the issue of race still challenges us 100 years later.
Since this book was published, Fritz Pollard has been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. That’s a good and deserved thing.
Fritz Pollard’s story deserves to be known by more people.
Highly recommended to: NFL fans, Brown University (other Ivy League Schools) football fans, Akronites, those with interest in civil rights history.
My cousin John Martin Carroll wrote this book on Fritz Pollard who was a remarkable person and pioneer. Brown University - Rose Bowl (1916), National Football League. He was the first African American head coach in the National Football League (NFL). Pollard and Bobby Marshall were the first two African American players in the NFL in 1920.
This book is so relevant and inspiring it prompted me and my company to buy the license to produce the audiobook so that Fritz Pollard can be a come a household name. Beautifully written and researched with compassion sensitivity and integrity. I absolutely loved it. Pollard should be the history books along side Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson. Carroll has convinced me of this.
