A deep and informative study on Hebrews, and also easy-to-understand explanations and comparisons of old and new testament scriptures. It gave me new understanding and appreciation of the writing ability of the author of Hebrews, and also, a great appreciation of John MacArthur's diligence in research.

Initially I thought it was worth only 4 stars but this faithful commentary is so insightful that it deserves 5. Two strengths, among others: The commentator's humility is one and thorough scholarship is another.

It turns out MacArthur had Scripture reform his thinking (semper reformanda or whatevs) -- he once held a wrong view on Christ's eternal Sonship. Just search or go to Grace To you website to see why and how he changed his position on this.

The contents...just to highlight a few things -- his exposition is faithfully contextual. He maintains the interpretive integrity and taught me that this letter to the Hebrews is exactly what it is -- it was written for the Jewish Christians in the 1st century. This context is fundamental to Hebrews chapter 5 and so on. (There is no losing salvation in the Hebrews text; only the possibility for the Jews reverting to Judaism.)

And his exposition of Hebrews 11on the cloud of wittenesses..actually the latter part of the commentary made it very difficult for me to skip sections...

The Lord is kind to have given us (especially laypeople in the pew like me) a faithful expositor/preacher. Praise the Lord.

Bible Commentary I learned so much!

My goodness, I had no idea I would enjoy this study so much.

I've read Hebrews many times before, and sat through more than one sermon series on it. But this commentary opened up so much more of the meaning to me.

My new bible, which I promised myself would not be covered in notes like my last one (making it hard to read), is now covered in notes. Or at least Hebrews is!

I did this one as a personal bible study, not in a group.

Highly recommended!

I think MacArthur makes a detailed and in-depth study of this letter to the Hebrews. However, it is very important to read the introduction in the beginning or you miss out on a lot of what he says about the basis for his interpretations and can lead to misunderstandings. I think he makes a fair and encouraging interpretation of this often misunderstood letter. I feel that this commentary really helped me to learn and grow.

Excellent guide

When things get tough, I always turn to my go-to inspirational books. John's always a favorite. Luke gives me amazing insights into Christ's teachings. And Hebrews? That book is just packed with deep wisdom.

I've probably read Hebrews like 20 times now, and I'm still finding new stuff I missed before. MacArthur's commentary really helps me see things I didn't catch earlier.

It's seriously one of the best Hebrews commentaries I've checked out lately.

Review of MacArthur Commentary on Hebrews

JMAC must quote the whole book of Hebrews as he goes through section by section and gives insight and information. Thoroughly done and much information.

A particularly skewed look at a very difficult letter. There are no signs of careful exegesis here, as MacArthur not only goes for quick answers to tough questions (MacArthur suggests the author of Hebrews must be switching audiences even though there is no internal evidence for this) and makes sloppy mistakes (MacArthur highlights six warnings for believers, even though four are in sections he later identifies as directed towards a different audience). In short, MacArthurs interpretation of Hebrews allows for little grace, instead preferring an interpretation that encourages people to focus on their good works instead of the sovereignty of Gods Wordthe opposite of what the author of Hebrews intended. The best example can be found in MacArthur's summary of chapter three where he suggest that the rest the author speaks of can only be found in rigorous self-discipline and examination and Pharisaical way of following the Law--the very thing New Testament writers, like the author of Hebrews, is trying to liberate Christians from.[return][return]The word study is helpful, though.

Really outstanding commentary on the Book of Hebrews. I used a number of books when preaching through the book. But, this was definitely my most utilized book. I enjoy the classics for sure. However, this one had solid exegesis and I didn't have to fight the language. Considering Hebrews is a deep book, this is an easy read.

I didn't really have any major disagreements with the book at all. MacArthur is strongly sovereign grace and always backs up his points with other Scripture. He is good about sticking with the text and he didn't skip any of the hard passages.

I doubt I'll ever preach through a book without reading his commentaries if they are available.

Just wrapped up leading a Bible study using this excellent guide. I enjoyed how MacArthur would cross reference other scripture passages that related well with the Hebrews passage we were studying each week.

Also, he has thorough notes on each passage printed within each of the twelve lessons. A great tool for leaders and participators alike!
