The history of the Iona Community, including St Colomba's founding of an influential Celtic Christian community on the Hebridean island of Iona in the sixth century, the work of George MacLeod whose inspiration placed Iona firmoly on the Christian map once again in the 20th century and the current broad span of the Community, touching the map of human experience - spirituality, politics, peace and justice - guided by the wild goose, Celtic symbol of the Holy Spirit.
Wonderful story of an island and community I would love to visit. Have been a fan of the band with the same name, who make references to the island of Iona in many of their songs.
Also good honest reflection on community and how various approaches and experiments were made as times changed.
I really enjoyed reading about the history not only of the relatively recent Iona community, but the Celtic roots of the Island and Christian presence and influence for over 1500 years. I have been greatly challenged, and encouraged to seek God’s will and purposes for his Church and His people.
We visited Iona on my first trip to the UK and I became very intrigued by the Iona Community, a Christian spirituality and social mission group that grew out of an outreach mission in Glasgow and now includes members all over the world. The members have to commit to a Christian mission focus, a certain level of financial giving and to going to the island of Iona very so often to renew ties with the community. The community also has created some of the most innovative and beautiful new Christian music in the world through Wild Goose Publishing.
This book is an honest history of the Iona Community. It is very good in giving the sense of history and the struggles of the community to find itself after the first generation under George MacLeod. It does less well at explaining the community in the present.
