March 30, 2021Quando uma jovem técnica de laboratório é encontrada assassinada no seu local de trabalho, a única pista que a polícia encontra é o bisturi usado como arma.
A investigação acaba por ser entregue à Detective Sargento Kate Hamilton que vê o seu trabalho dificultado por falta de cooperação por parte da equipa do Hospital.
Paralelamente a esta linha de acção ocorre outro crime. Deparei-me, uma vez mais, com um caso em que a sinopse disponibilizada online apresenta menos pormenores que a sinopse do próprio livro físico, por isso opto por não entrar em detalhes relativamente a essa outra investigação.
Achei interessante a ideia de o autor ter criado estas duas linhas de investigação e considero que o motivo por detrás de um dos crimes foi, em certa medida, "compreensível" (salvo seja e se me é permitido tal afirmação, tendo em conta o contexto/tempo em que decorre a acção), mas tenho que admitir que ao ler este enredo criado por Paul Carson senti alguma dificuldade em lidar com/assimilar algumas diferenças de mentalidade da altura para a actualidade, hierarquias, formas de agir e de pensar, etc... Senti que este livro foi escrito "noutra época e noutra realidade", tornando-se, por vezes um pouco complicado digerir alguns aspectos, como se tivesse viajado no tempo várias décadas para o passado.
Tenho consciência de que, provavelmente, se o tivesse lido há alguns anos até poderia ter sido uma excelente leitura mas que, actualmente e tendo em conta muitos outros bons livros que já li (até comparando com outros escritos mais ou menos na mesma altura), esta foi apenas uma história que entreteve. Admito que iniciei esta leitura com elevadas expectativas devido a algumas boas opiniões que ouvi/li mas que, infelizmente (na minha humilde opinião), me deparei com uma história "mediana".
"Bisturi" entreteve, mas não me arrebatou.

Sanırım bu türden kitaplardan çok fazla okuduğum için artık beni yeterince etkilemiyorlar. okuduğum çoğu şeye aşinayım ve türe göre yazarın bize sunacaklarını bildiğim için eski tadı alamaz oldum. Bu yüzden olacak ki bu kitabı da çok sevemedim, zaten yazar ortaya çok iyi bir iş çıkaramamış, bende türe fazla aşina olunca kitaptan zevk alamadım.
Ve şunu eklemeden geçemeyeceğim, kitabın sonu aşk romanı gibi, masal gibi çok fazla pembe, musmutlu idi. Gerçekle bağdaşmayan sonları oldukça itici bulan biri olarak bu kitabın sonunu da hiç sevmedim.
Polisiye-gerilim türü içinde ne en iyi ne en kötü kitaplardan biri. Bu türü seviyorsanız ve gizemin yoğun olmadığı polisiyelerden de hoşlanıyorsanız okuyabileceğiniz bir kitap.

Um policial com bom nível embora com um estilo algo diferente do que podemos estar habituados, pois ao contrário dos típicos livros de thriller e mistério, em que só no final se descobre o "culpado", neste livro, logo no início da história, fica-se a saber quem é o assassino e o culpado dos crimes que vão sendo cometidos.
O rapto de um bébé pelo meio, em que de imediato também se sabe quem são os culpados e como foi elaborado o plano para o golpe, não deixa de tornar a história menos interessante.
Quando li as críticas do livro e descobri que no início se sabia logo quem eram os culpados dos crimes pensei sinceramente que o livro fosse ficar desinteressante, mas fiquei agradavelmente surpreendida, pois o facto de se saber tudo no princípio não tirou o suspense da história.

November 26, 2013The well-worn plot elements and stock characters of Carson's novel are so familiar and utterly predictable, any reader might be fogiven for thinking they'd read this book before. Entertaining enough and even likeable, but a long road to travel for a greeting-card ending. (To the good, reading the German translation expanded my vocabulary of medical terms and useful phrases for kidnapping the newborn children of rich Irish people.)

When a book has 'international bestseller' on the cover it is really disappointing to read just an ok book.
It was predictable and I didn't really like, feel any empathy/sympathy for any of the characters.
You know from pretty much the outset who the killer is and the outcome is very predictable.
But it was an ok read - not an amazing one or great one - just ok.

An ok read, quite boring and predictable from the very start. The plot dragged a bit and u can guess pretty much from the beginning who the killer is.

It's been at least 10 years since I've read one of Carson's books, as they're just not that common here, but may be easier to find in his native Ireland, so for all intents and purposes, 'Scalpel' was like reading something of his for the first time. The interesting thing with 'Scalpel' is that you have 2 major plotlines throughout the book that are loosely connected but really don't have anything to do with each other. In the titular plot, a doctor is hiding a secret that could ruin him and thus utilizes a scalpel as his weapon of choice to ensure that anyone in the hospital who finds out his secret won't live to tell it. In the other, a group of small-time criminals are looking for an easy dollar and a way to make a name for themselves among their peers by upping the ante and kidnapping the newborn baby of one of Dublin's wealthiest businessmen. While the murders in the hospital are heinous, it is the kidnapped baby that holds the public's attention, as this child's birth received media coverage akin to that of a new prince or princess in line for the British throne. Ties between the two stories are small in that the baby was delivered at the maternity hospital where the doctor is committing his crimes, by that very physician himself, but that's about it. The Dublin police force works to track down the criminals for both, but that is to be expected when both are high-profile cases.
I wouldn't call it a can't-put-down read, though I was definitely hooked by the end trying to figure out how the bad guys would be caught. Carson tells readers right away who did the deeds, which gives him the ability to go into the criminals' minds without spoiling any sort of 'guess who' mystery. Having the lead detective investigating the murders be a woman made this book stand out from the many mysteries I read, though she only ended up at the front because the original (male) detective got pulled from the murders by his bosses in order to focus on the higher-profile kidnapping.
Overall a good read, and I'll try to make sure it's less than 10 years before I pick up another of Carson's books.

I wasn't too taken with the book at the start but it improved and I did enjoy it. I felt sorry for both protaganists (there are 2 stories going on within the book and tenously linked) so the author did a good job of creating empathy.
The main stage is the Central Maternity Hospital in Dublin. A set of flawed doctors bring a baby into the world and have to resusitate him. From this tough start the baby suffers being kidnapped and going back to the brink of deaths door again. Meanwhile, one of our doctors has a very dark secret which he kills to protect causing mayhem within the hospital.
Our police force includes a single mother that is tenacious in discovering the truth of the murders and puts her own life at risk to catch the killer.
I found the back stories to really show how nature versus nurture can manifest itself in people. I think that's why even though the doctor was a despicable character I felt sorry for him too after his rough childhood and could understand why he was the way he was though as he was dying anyway I think him killing was unnecessary but without that the story would have been halved and not as interesting. It was nice to read an Irish based story and a new author to put on my reading list.

Não costumo ser grande fã deste género de livros, no entanto quando o comprei na feira do livro, no ano passado, gostei n da sinopse (e do preço)
Por norma não sabemos quem é o criminoso até quase ao último minuto. Paul Carson adopta outra forma de contar a história. Em bisturi sabemos desde o início quem comete os crimes hediondos que deixam chocada e assustada toda a comunidade local.
O autor leva-nos a conhecer os mais profundos pensamentos e desejos de cada uma das suas personagens o quebre leva o leitor a ter em seu poder todos os dados existentes.
Aquilo que poderia tornar-se facilmente num grande bocejo é na verdade uma história viciante que não me deixou pousar o livro antes de terminar a ultima página.
Se gostam de thrillers então está é uma excelente opção para as férias :)

Este é um daqueles policiais que simplesmente não funciona. A fórmula utilizada é diferente e original: o assassino é revelado desde o início da estória e ao longo da sua leitura as suas motivações são desvendadas.
Contudo, o suspense desvanece nesta obra. As personagens são unidimensionais e tão vazias que o leitor pouco se importa com o seu destino.
Esta leitura é um sacrifício, o autor não é capaz de envolver e cativar, e o próprio final é previsível e entediante. Um livro para pôr de lado, sem dúvida.

Una piacevole lettura.
Questo è quel che penso di questo bel mystery scritto dal medico irlandese Paul Carson e ambientato (non a caso) in ambiente ospedaliero. Personaggi ben approfonditi, decisamente credibili e tridimensionali, cattivi (ce n'è più di uno) disprezzabili e temibili e una trama che si aziona come un meccanismo a orologeria fino a collimare in un finale al cardiopalma (assolutamente ben congegnato) nel quale tutti i personaggi incrociano i proprio destini uscendone inevitabilmente segnati.

Quite boring and predictable from the very beginning. There was little-to-no mystery to be excited about and catching the murderer was just a matter of time which made the plot a bit dragging.
