Encounters: Embodied Practices

Rate this book
In this publication, Lukas Avendaño, Wagner Carvalho, Sandhya Daemgen, Ismail Fayed, Alex Hennig, Raphael Moussa Hillebrand, Mother "Leo" Saint Laurent, Léna Szirmay-Kalos, Thiago Granato and July Weber conduct conversations about embodied strategies of knowledge production and knowledge transmission based on their respective choreographic and curatorial practices. The separation of body and mind, the dualism of thought and action and the notion of a universality of knowledge are encountered here by a plurality of possibilities for knowledge production that emerges with and from the reality of differently situated bodies. "Encounters - Embodied Practices" is an invitation to think with one another as an embodied relationship.

The first chapter "Choreographies of Power" starts with a reflection on the situatedness of Black and diverse identities within the Berlin cultural scene over time. It continues by discussing urban dance practices in terms of their origins in the African-American context and their importance in the struggle for collective spaces for People of Color and LGBTQIA+ persons. The chapter "Choreographies of Togetherness" focuses on questions concerning how to create communion through embodied practices and what it means to share space in regard to the responsibilities that this entails. The last chapter "Choreographies of Knowledge" sheds light on transitory identities in indigenous cultures in Latin America and their potential as a means to emancipation from and resistance to colonialism. Furthermore, the chapter shares a critical perspective on the practice of archiving and the institution of the archive. Introducing practices of thinking with absent bodies across space and time, the chapter closes with two fictional dialogues.
