Lasting Pride

Rate this book
At almost eighteen years old, Roberta Stanton had grown up a thief, taught by her father, the best in the trade. Breaking into the old brick building was easy, the rewards had been high and she'd got away with it. Or so she'd thought, it had only cost her the lives of seven of her best friends.

Ten years later, now Rob found herself on the other side of the law. Tracking down the thieves of millions of dollars worth of art and getting attacked, was the least of her problems.

Ric Derby has spent his last ten years inventing himself and the Blue Spot, his art galleries. Now with five different "Spots" opened around the United States, he is finally in control of his life. What he didn't expected to find, was his new assistant dead and several millions of dollars of art stolen. But, what really shocked him, is seeing the detective assigned to the case.

Then, they find out the theft is a personal vendetta. Meant to steal everything he's worked hard for and trying to kill him in the process. Even trying to take away something that Ric had just found for the first time in his life, love.

★★★★Lasting Pride by Jill Sanders (The Pride Series Book 4)

I was given this book as a Beta read in exchange for my honest review.

This book is set to be released around Oct 2013.

This was another fine book by Jill Sanders. This is the fourth book in the Pride Series, although it almost felt like it didn't quite belong.

This is the story of Ric and Rob. When Ric's gallery, The Blue Spot gets robbed it's up to Portland's finest to solve the case. While answering questions and showing the police around, he notices a young female officer walking around like she owned the place. But no one says a thing to her, interesting.

Ric is intrigued by this female, but is told to wait for Detective Rob Stanton in his office. So when the mystery female walks in he is very surprised to learn she is the lead detective, Rob Stanton. Well actually Roberta, but Rob for short, named after her father Robert. Ric can not keep her out of his mind.

Rob on the other hand, can't stand the egotistical, arrogant Ric. Who does he think he is? She has a murder/robbery investigation to deal with, and he wants to play games. Rob took an oath to serve and protect and she takes her job very seriously. But is it possible to serve and protect someone constantly without falling for them. Can she leave emotions out of it, and keep a distinct line between professional and personal?

I started this book, not really caring for Ric. I've had mixed feelings for him, throughout the series. He always seemed to have a secret agenda, that just felt shady to me. But I must say I really like him now. He just seems to be misunderstood and misjudged a lot. Hopefully, I'm not just another girl to fall for his charm.

I guess my only issue with this book is that I was expecting more of Pride in it. While we do get a glimpse of Pride and the Jordan bunch, 75-80% of the book is set in Portland. This keeps the story on track, but was a little disappointing. I would have loved to see tons of Pride in the last book of the Pride Series.

Thanks to the author for allowing me another peek at Iian, lol. I know, not even his book, but I still love him. I have really enjoyed the series, and am hoping this truly isn't the end. Although because of the crazy reading order I did, I still get to go back and get more in book 2.

Roberta Stanton (Rob) never had a normal childhood. She was raised by her father who was a thief. She was taught to pick pockets like a pro by the time she was six and crack open safes by the time was ten in less than ten minutes. When most kids her age were in bed asleep she was robbing liquor stores and houses with her old man. It was the only life she knew until the day that one tragic accident took away everyone that she held dear to her but at the same time it saved her.

Ricardo Darby (Ric) on the other hand had everything handed to him his whole life. He came from money and when he first got the idea of starting his own art studio’s he never realized just how popular they would become. With a natural eye for talent, he now owns and operates six art galleries across the West Coast and was more successful than his parents had ever been at his age.

When Ric’s Portland Gallery is robbed and his assistant shot at the scene, Rob is the detective that is assigned to the job. She’s the best detective at the Portland Police Department. They all know her background and where she came from and maybe that was why she was so highly admired by her peers. It’s up to her to help solve the case but neither she nor Ric knew what they were in for. With family secrets being revealed on both sides and both being threatened by someone that continues to evade them, they find themselves together more often than not but Rob is determined to keep things professional between them because you can’t mix business with pleasure.

This book was book four in the Pride series but could be read as a standalone book but I honestly suggest that you start at the beginning and work your way here. You do get small glimpses of past characters from the series and if you’ve read the whole series you will know how they all come together. In this book you also get introduced to other characters that leads to another series by Ms. Sanders called the Secret Series. There are still two more books in the Pride series that I plan to go back and read as well since this series has been added to my list of favorites but first I’m going to read Secret Seduction which is currently free on Amazon and the first book in the spin off series which features Ric’s sister Katie.

While I love all of the Pride books, I think this one is my favorite. It was great seeing Ric again and the mystery that Rob (Roberta) Stanton investigates draws them together in spite of the fact that she has no intention of developing a relationship with anyone involved in an investigation even though he is not a suspect. This mystery one was well orchestrated.

I read a book to break up the series. It seems to me no matter how much you love an author to read a series can sometimes become repetitive. It is the authors POV I fell in love with but in the middle of book 3 I felt like I needed a break. The story wasn’t as impactful to me. I found my way back bc I bought this in the boxed set.

This book takes you out of Pride and to a different set of characters. Ric you will know if you’ve read the others in the series but to the mix enters detective Roberta Stanton. I liked her back story it gave her depth however this book does have several side stories that hit the couple throughout the story and to me I thought it would have been better if the focus remained on just the couple. They have missing art, death attempts, a sister finding her father isn’t who she thought, another learning she was abducted, a cop who’s never depended on others.

The last is a topic that would not be easy to overcome. Trust issues would be understandable as well as just the difference in their day to day lives. A detective and a millionaire art dealer. It just seems the mountain size troubles became so easily resolved and some never came back up. I can’t bring up too much because it would ruin a twist but let me say Ruth Ann got close to her family and roots but then we never hear if there are future plans or even if she intended to bring them into her life.

Even though it was a uneven road I still enjoyed my ride and did get to go back to Pride to revisit past characters. Enjoy!

This started out with mystery, a little thrill and danger which gave it top marks for me. This was more of a suspenseful read that I come to expect when reading or listening to a book. Taking place in the lovely town of Pride that I have come to love with wonderful characters you can relate to that become your best friends. What do you do at a young age when your father is a thief? You become the best of them as he teaches you the life. For Roberta life was not easy growing up she lived a hard life as her father teaches her the trade and then got drunk and beat her. For every goal or good thing that was done he celebrated, drank and beat up on Roberta. This was her life until her early teens when he died, life got a little better for her when she became part of a gang but then they died. We than move on to her late years and all she has made of her life as she meets Ric who owns the Blue Spot art galleries. As they deal with murder, stole art and soooooooooooo much more. Come take the ride that will keep you guessing as to who did what, why and will love come of this mess.

My heart really went out to Roberta aka Rob as she takes you through her childhood to adulthood. Life isn’t getting much easier for her as she finds out who she is and how she came to be. She has come far building a wonderful career for herself in the police department who would have guessed she would have went from being a criminal to protecting those around her. Rob is a down to earth woman who gives so much to everyone. She is smart and sassy not taking any crap from anyone, she teaches young children and gives so much back. I doubt you could pick this book up and not have a strong reaction to her. She brings so much to this story as she helps Ric fight the thieves why they try to stay alive.

Ric well now he is just one handsome down to earth man who wants Rob from the first minute he sees her. After he puts his foot in his mouth things do not go so easy for him. Rob keeps him on his toes as he pushes the line trying his best to get her into his bed. I have waited a long time to read his story. He is about to find out his life isn’t so easy from family drama to women drama. Ric is going to be a character you fall in love with as you wish you could make him yours.

It is always a pleasure listening to an audio from Tanya Eby she puts life in the words the author wrote. Her many different voices are outstanding, it always amazes me that she can remember what voices go with which character throughout this series. If you listened to this series on audio starting with book 1 and not stopping until the last audio she has done all the voices for the different characters keep the same tone, accent etc throughout. If this audio was edited you cannot tell, it flows smooth throughout until the end. There are no background noises, no pauses just very nicely done that will keep you smiling or make you sad as she works her way through the trials each character must go through. I really enjoy her voice as she hits the correct emotion for what is going on in the book. She gives you many different character voices which is easy to tell between the male and females. She really does an outstanding job, I know when I pick up a book in this series she will bring these wonderful characters to life for me. I always enjoy listening to her audios.

The only issue I had with this book was you never knew just what happen between Ric parents but my guess is there is a book out there for his sister which will give me the answers I seek. This was a well thought out plot which has the suspense all throughout the book. Unlike the first books in this series from this author where I felt the suspense was pushed or maybe out of place this one is placed just right giving you an outstanding suspenseful love romance from start to finish. The author gives you humor that makes you chuckle and at times she breaks your heart with the life they have lead or the issues they still have to deal with. I have truly enjoyed this series getting to know the characters and the town of Pride. It is truly a town I would love to live in as the characters take care of their own making all new members feel part of their family. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for the rest of this series. If you haven’t pick up any of Jill Sanders books you really should give her a try. They are all standalone but to get the full impact you really should read them in order.

I truly enjoyed reading this book! The book starts out 7 years before the present and introduces us to one of the main characters. This background is important to understand the present day personality of the character.

The main characters in this book are strong and I felt like I was right there with them in the story. Roberta Stanton aka Rob grew up on the streets and led a hard life. After a gang attacks her "street family", Rob is left alone. But a cop with a kind heart takes Rob in and changes her life. Sergent Johns becomes Rob's mentor and father figure.

Jump to current day. Rob has become a detective on the Portland Police Department. The first case we are introduced to the murder of an assistant to Ric Derby, who owns several successful art galleries.
Ric came from a rich family and Rob hates him because she feels that he was handed everything on a silver platter. At the same time she feels a strong attraction to this incredibly handsome and smart man.

After establishing the background and personalities of the main characters (Rob, Ric and Sergent Johns)the author takes the reader on a wild ride of twists and turns, mystery and suspense. Meanwhile the relationship between Ric and Rob grows as they are forced together working on this murder case.

There are several sub plots that the reader never sees coming but add intrigue to the book.

Romance blooms between Ric and Rob but they both find themselves in danger from unknown men who seem to have a personal vendetta against Ric. There are attempted murders, blown up apartments and both Ric and Rob seem to have targets on their back...but they don't know why. As they work to solve the case there are several viable suspects, all with a motive to kill.

Things become so dangerous that Ric and Rob are forced to go into hiding. Hiding together=romance.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 was because I felt that one of the sub-plots should have been expanded. More information should have be given to the reader.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes contemporary romance with lots of mystery and action. The romance in this book is mild, so if you're looking for hot and steamy and lots of angst then this book is probably not for you.

This was a decent story but, really? Her name was Roberta but she was called Rob. The bad guy who tried to kidnap her was Robbie, the sheriff of Pride was Robert AND Roberta’s father was Robert Stanton. Not much thought given to names in this book. I thought that was just ridiculous.

I was surprised at who was trying to kill Ric but I feel like there were a few unanswered questions overall.

There were several sex scenes but nothing that led up to them, no desire, no want, no feelings, nothing. Just because you put 2 or 3 or 4 sex scenes in a book doesn't make it "hot and steamy." It's the build up that makes it that way. IMO.. There could have been less sex and more storyline.

And there was a little swearing and the F-bomb was used 2 times.

As to the narration: Tanya Eby is one of my favorite narrators. She reads with emotions, most of the time, and her men sound like men. I can put up with anything else but if a man doesn’t sound like a man it’s going to result in a really low score for the female narrating the book.

A romance and a lil mystery all in one. I liked this series. This last one adds Ric to the family that we've been reading about. He is a well off art dealer with many galleries. He has a heart of gold but hadn't met the one. When his gallery is robbed he comes face-to-face with a beautiful detective. They have to deal with each other a lot to solve the crime an as they do, the craziness gets worse and their lives are threatened multiple times. I laughed at the way their story ends...cute turn! So like Rob!

**3 1/2 star rating**
I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book and I think it was well written. I liked how both Rob (Roberta) and Ric were able to come together even with everything that was happening to them. There was definitely some sexual tension through most of the book between the two. :)
My only issue with the book was that I found quite a few words that were spelled wrong. Many of the miss spellings were just an extra letter on a word either was missing or was added. But if that doesn't bother you then you should really read this book!

Great story!
I loved that a former thief becomes a cop and then meets rich art gallery owner and catches another thief stealing his art, while discovery who they really are. Not the usually boring romantic story line at all, lots of twists.

Ok, I really liked the characters a lot. I just feel like this book was shorter than the others and I didn't really like that. I wanted more time with them!!!

SPOILER*******

And then I was confused at the end. Are we supposed to know who Rob went to work for?

Rob came from nothing and Rob had everything. They couldn't be more different, but there is something there they can't deny. When his gallery was robbed, Rob is the detective in charge. She thinks she knows Ric's type, but he is different. As they try to get to the bottom of the mystery, someone is out to get Ric and Rob gets in the crossfire. She finds out that she has a family she didn't know and Ric finds out things about his family that changes everything. Can they find a way to be together?

A mysterious series of thefts and murders has got Roberta Stanton searching for the killer and charged with keeping Ric safe, unless he's the guilty party. An interesting plot with multiple layers of storylines to keep you intrigued and turning pages. A steamy romance with just enough hot sex to please the romance reader while not straying from the mystery layer of the plot. I am a fan of this series and this book just confirms my continued devotion to it!

I'm really loving this series. I was wondering if we would hear Ric's story and what a great match he has in Roberta. Ric's story was interesting with its family secrets that came out. Roberta also had some of her own family secrets which came out. A great read.

"“Mi ero promessa di non farlo,” disse lei contro il suo petto. “Cos'è che mi attira sempre da te?" “Intendi a parte l'omicidio, la scomparsa di opere d'arte da milioni di dollari, il fatto che mi hanno sparato e la tua aggressione?” Ric le sorrise.
Rob rise sotto i baffi.
