Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales, Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps. Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.
Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him, leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having her feel the hurt of being left…again.
Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv--and himself--enough to play the possibilities?

Small-town country girl Calisa Rhose has been writing since she was a teen in Oklahoma. It wasn’t until 2005, while living in California, that she realized if “they” can do it there’s no reason why she couldn’t write and get published, too. That realization began her journey into the world of publishing. After a cross-country move with her husband and their three grown daughters (plus families) back to her home state, Calisa dove into her writing. She joined RWA and the local chapter OKRWA. Since that day she has been more determined than ever to see her name in lights. She intends to nurture others and continue to grow as an author. This is a great story with engaging characters! Conner McKay is a helicopter EMT with a deep fear of emotional involvement. He was abandoned as a child, then later his wife left him shortly after their daughter was born. It’s no wonder the guy has trust issues. Rather than allow the same hurt he’s experienced to happen to his young daughter, Janna, he’s built an emotional wall around them, refusing to let anyone get close.
Enter Vivian Dane, a veterinarian who soon has Conner reexamining the way he’s chosen to live. The attraction between the two is immediate, but change isn’t something that happens overnight. Viv, in turn, has emotional bruises of her own thanks to parents who never understood her desire to be a “pet doctor”—something they consider beneath them (they’re world renowned wildlife vets).
I enjoyed the story and the up-and-down conflicts between Conner and Vivian. The romance was sweet, beautifully written and worked on an emotional level that allowed me to bond with the characters. I felt for Conner as he waffled back and forth on whether to risk his heart and allow someone else into Janna’s life; for Viv who’d already suffered the rejection of her parents and didn’t need another emotional blow from the man she’d given her heart to. As for Janna, she was the perfect balance of childhood innocence, loving daughter, and delightful manipulator! Bravo to the author for a well-told tale!
I love romances with children in them. They add such sparkle and sweetness. Little Janna provides this effervescant thread in Risk Factors, a fabulous read, tightly woven with strong characters and deep emotions.
Connor McKay, in his struggle to overcome his childhood abandonment issues, devotes himself to his daughter. She satisfies the needs of his heart. His job as a Medi-Flight EMT Paramedic satisfies the needs of his mind. But when he meets the person who might satisfy the needs of his body and his soul, he balks. After all, his own Mother left him after meeting a man. He will not share himself with anyone but his daughter.
Viv Dane is the new veterinarian in town. She has abandonment issues of her own. When she meets attractive Connor, she is alternately put-off by his scowls and charmed by his smiles. Yet she can’t resist him—or his daughter. The author weaves this emotional push and pull so well, your heart actually begins to ache for them. In fact, you want to step between them and ask if they truly intend to throw away a good thing like this. But we don’t need to, for like the old saying, “…and a child shall lead them” Janna does it for us. She’s wisdom in a small package, that one. Risk Factors is a heart-warming read, one that will stay with you long after the words, “The End.”
Risk Factors is not only a story of a romance, but a story of love. Well plotted and extremely engaging this novel is more than your typical romance, it's full of vivid images and a story so engrossing that I couldn't put it down. The author, Calisa Rhose, has a great handle on her characters' personalities and uses them to tell a lively and creative tale of perseverance, and love. The characters are memorable and realistic. I could easily bond to them, especially to Vivian. Here’s how Connor McKay sees Vivian first: "A woman sat flat on her fanny, legs stretched out on either side of a Husky looking dog.” And how Vivian Dane, a veterinarian, sees him: "tall, handsome, and ripped, with a startled golden gaze." Connor’s typical male attitude that only his is the best solution to problems and only his point of view is right, hides his emotional hurt after being left by Janna’s mother, Robin. Both he and Vivian come laden with their own worries, failures, disappointments and mutual emotional bruises. Sweet Janna, Connor’s daughter, and Skittles the pet are characters that create a perfect equilibrium in the story. Funny and mischievous they come to counter balance the deep emotion quakes Connor and Viv pass through. How I loved Janna’s words to Vivian, “Bye, Doctor Dane. Thank you for helping Skittles. She said it really hurts.” “Did Skittles happen to tell you where the pain is?” - Skittles being a skunk! As always, I don't want to go into details about the story, as I hate spoilers, but it was good, really good. I didn't mind following the multiple characters, they were interesting, even with all their flaws. The characters are very human like you and me. I’m fed up with the feisty heroine and the brooding hero. Here you meet real people with their desires, dreams, flaws and accomplishments. There was just something about the Calisa Rhose's writing style that slowly sucked me in. I highly recommend this book to every fan of clean, sweet romance.
I loved the twist of having the heroine, Viv, be a Veterinarian. Many of my favorite scenes in this book are the ones where Viv takes care of her animal charges. But Viv came from distracted parents who gave all of their attention to their exotic animals on foreign soil, and she has had to live with that gaping wound all of her life of not feeling wanted or good enough.
Connor is a hunky EMT, a former foster child, and single father. He is a hero on many levels, beginning with his job where he saves people and does heroic things on an almost daily basis. He is also a devoted single dad who comes as a package deal. Whoever he gives his heart to will have to love his daughter, Janna (Jelly bean) as much as him. He won't risk his daughter's heart to be broken by anyone ever again - especially since his wife had abandoned both of them.
That’s where the love story steps off and gets interesting watching each character work through their issues, battling their full-on attraction to each other, and finally overcoming all obstables to let love into their lives again.
I recommend this tenderly written romance by Calisa Rhose for those who like a good love story and for those who like a touch of EMT adventure and veterinary medicine in their books.
Anyone who knows me, knows my fascination with helicopters. I dreamed of being a helicopter pilot when I was younger - a midst the rage of new adult hormones and the desire to do something significant with my life. No, more than that - profound. And exciting and different than your normal nine to five office job. And I wanted a career where I helped people.
So, the hero, Connor, got me right from the start. Not the pilot of the helicopter, but still so dreamy as a first responder, a Medi-flight nurse. Miss Calisa got that right. For who among us doesn't adore a man who would give his life for another? Not many could do that job. He is also a single father with the love of the cosmos for his daughter. That touches my heart immediately as I have two wee sons of my own. And I think this is an important factor that we need to remember about books. There will be elements with the story that we identify immediately with because of who we are and what is in our life at the moment.
Risk Factors is a touching story, full of heart. It is real life about the complexities of a relationship when working around children. Many can relate to this being single parents. How do we find love again for ourselves, yet always put our children first? I believed in this partnership immediately. I wanted them to be together - to love, to become a family.
But I have yet to say anything about our heroine, the lovely Vivian, who also has a job worth applaud, as she calls herself, "a pet doctor." For many of us, our pets are part of our family, and the kindness she shows her patients is beyond compare. Viv navigates a rocky relationship with Conner with a grace and goodness that I doubt I could esteem to in a lifetime. Even with her own baggage from the past, she is still a woman that I admired and could relate to.
Miss Calisa is a prolific writer, imagery and introspection both, with a feel in the book that she may have lived some of the scenes herself - it felt that close. Wonderful descriptions and words. My favorite? "Connor laughed. The slow, husky sound curled Viv's toes several times, like one of those party favors that rolled tight, and then straightened with each breath." Just lovely.
This is a small town, medical romance with interesting and complex main characters. Both Connor and Vivian have deep emotional fears and find it hard to connect and open themselves to relationships. However, they know in their hearts it is time to take a risk and let someone in.
Connor, a busy EMT, is a single-father and always puts his daughter's needs first. But Janna is not at all spoiled, just well-loved and the center of his universe :D Seeing the way Vivian interacts with his daughter and how she seems to 'fit' with them, leads to some soul-searching and emotional courage.
Vivian, the new vet in town, has put all of herself into her new clinic. As an adult, she still carries the pain of a neglected childhood, and the sting of being a constant disappointment to her parents. It's great to witness her letting go of her need for acceptance from them. Connor's devotion to his daughter is a strong attraction for Vivian, and she wants to give him the kind of adult-connection that he has stopped looking for, but greatly deserves.
If you like very accessible heroes and sweet-but-deep romance stories, I can guarantee you'll enjoy Risk Factors and want to read more of Ms. Rhose's books.
Fun, light romance and a recommended read. Characters were believable, the story unique, the intimacy written with just enough detail I didn't feel like I was in the middle of a "how to" manual, and the technical writing accurate. Gold star for research. A character flaw I found, personally, not in written script, is I would have liked to see Vivian with more moxie. Yes, she had insecurity issues, but Connor treated her like crap more than once and when he came groveling back, I wished Vivian would have seen past her want to get in bed with him, and kicked his ass to the curb. He need to be knocked down a few pegs and humbled. Her accepting his sanctimonious and judgmental outbursts played in direct opposition to her need to prove herself independent. In the end, redemption is made and I got my warm fuzzy HEA. Another great read from Rhose.
This is a delightful story with characters who will pull at your heartstrings. Connor is a single father who has issues from being abandoned as a child, and Viv is the local vet who comes to his rescue when his daughter's pet needs medical attention.
Viv too has abandonment issues, but together they might just be exactly what the other needs to work through it all.
This was an emotional story with a twist I didn't quite see coming, and I thank the author for such a fabulous read.
I received this book free via publishers in exchange for an honest review. I don't gush and give false praise – I don't believe that helps readers or authors so what you read is what I truly feel about a book.
I'm a sucker for romance, good escapism form the world for a while and I need a happy ending. Being an animal lover too this book attracted me. Viv the vet – lovely lady and I felt for her with the upbringing she had, on the surface Idyllic but as often happens dig deeper and you see the public face her famous caring exotic animal vet parents wore didn’t match up to a caring upbringing for their only child, who strived for their affection and approval. She's become a vet too but as she doesn’t follow them into treating exotic animals they are quite disparaging about her profession. She's taken over her uncles practice when she meets the delicious Connor. Single dad he'll do just about anything to keep his daughter happy including backing off a promising romance if he thinks it will adversely affect his daughter Janna. Though his love for her was clear I could have kicked him sometimes as he was so obtuse and determined to see only his point of view and not consider he could be wrong. An arrogance if you like born from his determination to ,make up to Jesse the fact her mum left them when she was just a baby.
Viv takes a lot from Connor when I’d have been telling him to get lost – she's lovely but a bit of a doormat at times....she needed to have more respect for herself instead of excusing Connors actions because she understood his need to protect Jesse. I enjoyed the romance between them but to be honest it was a bit lightweight for me – I need more ups and downs, high and lows, the contrasts of angst and triumph. Tears even but this didn't do any of those for me just sat middling along annoying me when yet again Connor was disrespectful to Viv in his actions of not his words. I'd have enjoyed it more if there were some out and out arguments, some bitter separations and the consequent making up instead of just Connors hot and cold action and Viv just taking and excusing it. Still, thats me and others like less drama and more softer romance and if that’s what you like then this book delivers a good four star read but not for me.
Stars: At 153 pages for £3.39 I think it's a bit overpriced and not great value unless you love the story and read over and over, I didn't :( I liked the characters though, and understood why they acted as they did but wanted Viv to have more backbone and stand up to Connor which would (IMO) make him respect her more. For me the romance was ok but too gentle to be great so only three stars from me. Nothing wrong with the book – just not to my taste.
I really enjoyed reading Viv and Connor's story. Viv's a veterinarian and Connor's an EMT. They both have interesting jobs that show up on the page in a realistic way showing Calisa did her homework. The high-stakes medical jobs also lend dimension to Viv and Connor's romance.
Both Viv and Connor are dealing with family issues that keep driving them apart despite a passionate attraction that keeps yanking them back together. Viv is sweet and compassionate, a little clumsy, and a lot damaged by parents who pretty much ignored her while they focused on their careers as high-profile wild-animal rescue workers. Connor is hot, emotionally damaged from his ex-wife leaving him and abandoning their baby for "greener pastures," and utterly devoted to his 7 yo daughter, Janna (Jelly Bean). Janna is so much more than an addition to the story. She's super cute and plays a vital role in Viv and Connor's romance.
Risk Factors is a sweet read with lots of excellent emotion and real-world pet and human medical emergencies. There was high drama and some steamy-but-still-sweet physical romance. I highly recommend Risk Factors for fans of sweet romance, romance with a kid in the story, and romance centering on characters working in the medical field. It's the perfect read for those who like small-town contemporary romances, too. There's just so much for everyone in this sweet read.
Connor is the paramedic on a medevac helicopter. When he is called to a horrible accident that included a cattle truck he meets the new vet Vivian. Though when they meet they feel an instant connection they don’t know who each other is. After their initial meeting they are each struck by the question of finding out who the other is. Though Connor wants to know who the mystery woman from the accident is his dedication for his daughter is all-consuming. So, when his daughter’s pet skunk needs a vet his mystery is solved and his problems only begin. Connor fights his attraction to Viv and Viv feels the need to prove that she is perfect for him and his daughter. It becomes an ongoing tug of war between Connor’s feelings for Viv and Connor’s dedication to his daughter. Can Connor find a good balance or will a good woman slip through his fingers?
This was a sweet love story. I really liked Connor and Viv. I thought they were very likable. My favorite had to be Janna, Connor’s daughter. She was so fun and loveable. Though I really enjoyed the love story I got a bit frustrated with Connor’s constant negative reactions about anything that Viv would say. He was overly sensitive for most of the book. I also thought that it was a good move in adding in Viv’s parents and her relationship with them. It really gave her depth and an added intricacy. Overall, I thought this was a good story even if Connor was a tad bit annoying at times.
No RISK FACTORS When Choosing This Heartwarming Tale! I loved this story! Connor was a sweetie, and even though he was hot and cold with Viv, it was still believable. We don't always act in a predictable manner, especially when our hearts are involved. The interplay with Janna and Connor was heartwarming and the interactions between Connor and Viv were hot! I love that he was an EMT, strong, but caring, prrrowww! I enjoyed reading this and was really rooting for this couple to get together. I found it hard to put down the further in I got into the story.
