Ahhh, i took my time working through this book in my devotional time and would certainly read it again. It is not your typical one page devotional with a light story based on a single verse, but neither is it an arduous, preachy volume. On the jacket it asserts that "through [Jesus'] names and titles we come to understand more fully how Jesus reveals God's heart to us." I am all the richer for having contemplated on his powerful and personal names, and know that no matter the circumstances, his presence, strength and love are with me always! I really like the structure of the book: a six day study on each name starting with an introduction to the name, three days reflecting on related passages along with relevant and often profound devotionals, a fifth day for reflecting on key promises associated with the name, and additional passages to reflect on over the weekend. I also was challenged by the structure within the daily readings. Here is a sample from the chapter on Jesus, The Bread of Life:
Reflect On: John 6:1-15, 25-66
Praise God: Who is able to take care of all your needs, both physical
and spiritual.
Offer Thanks: For all the ways God has fed you.
Confess: Any tendency to settle for less than what Jesus offers.
Ask God: To renew your spiritual hunger.
I am on to Praying the Names of God by the same author!

"Praying the Names of Jesus" is a daily devotional that lasts for 26 weeks (half a year). The study focused on 26 names and titles for Jesus, so the devotional focused on one name (or several similar names that were being counted as one name) each week.

Each week's study started with a page of information about the name/title and a key scripture where the name/title is used. We're not told which day to read this on, but you could read it on Sunday since there were no devotional entries for Saturday or Sunday. You could also read it with the two-page devotional for Monday, which contained several scripture verses that use the name/title and gave further information about the name/title. It also included a few questions for you to think over.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each have a few verses that use the name/title for you to read and reflect on along with suggestions for prayer based on those verses. The author also talked about how Jesus acted out this title in the Bible and how we can apply what we've learned to our lives.

Friday focused on the promises in the Bible connected with that week's name/title. Several verses were provided and more were suggested for you to look up on your own.

Each day's devotional only took a few minutes to go through. I was disappointed that there were no entries for Saturday and Sunday. Overall, I found this devotional interesting, and it left me feeling refreshed and encouraged.

I love all of Ann Spangler's books, but I especially enjoyed this one. I took my time, savoring each chapter. Not only does she explore the names of Jesus; she also adds background and relatable stories that make those names even more meaningful. You cannot study the names of God/Jesus without experiencing a deeper thirst for Him. I highly recommend this book.

Still disappointed in her writi

I've done three studies by Ann Spangler. I enjoy them and learn from her. But I am continually disappointed that she doesn't capitalize the names and pronouns for God. I was taught even in public school that all names and pronouns for God should always be capitalized.

A Good Overview of the Names of Jesus

The book explores the different names of Jesus each week. It is part devotional and part Bible study. Each week a different name of Jesus is explained. Good resource to have, and a little more in-depth than most devotionals.

I love the format of Ann Spangler books! Praying the Names of Jesus is a six month weekday devotional. It explains a number of the names that reference Christ in the Bible. I love the historical context that Spangler includes. I did this study with some friends and we inspired by so many readings! It lost one star, however, because Christ's pronouns often were not capitalized, which bothered me.

The format is good-- Set up Mon-Fri, Passage to read, and then suggestions for Adoration, Confession, Thanks, and Supplication/Ask. And then she does 2-3 pages of storytelling/insight. Those were okay. I really liked just having that guidance and often would read beyond the scriptures she used.

I love Ann Spangler's books. This was a great way to start my day, focusing on Jesus as he's described in the Bible. I will very likely read this one again - it covers a half-year (26 weeks). Her combined use of Bible and everyday stories make this applicable and interesting.

I went back and forth on this one, liking certain parts and not others. I think parts of it are really well written and really well connected. And yet other parts seemed disconnected from the chapter's focus. Overall good, and I would recommend.

Me:
As the description above states, Praying the Names of Jesus takes 26 names/titles of Jesus designed to take one name and reflect on that name over the week. Each chapter starts off with a brief description of the name for the week. Monday's study is called His Name Revealed and gives background informaiton and a short study; Tuesday's through Thursday's study is called Praying the Name and includes sections for each day on reflection, praise, gratitude, confession, and requests; and Friday's study is called Promises Associated with His Name where comforting promises in Scripture are given for your encouragement and continuing growth of your prayer life.

Praying the Names of Jesus was a really effectve and inspiring book. It was recommended to me by my friend Jennifer along with the companion Praying the Names of God. I haven't had the opportunity to begin Praying the Names of God yet, but based on what I've experienced through this book, I'm definitely adding that one to my TBR list. Focusing on an individual name for Jesus gives us a deeper understanding and appreciation for the magnitude of our Savior. He encompasses so many characteristics and all of them amazing and above our complete comprehension. Anytime we can deepend our understanding of God, we realize how big, magnificient, and great (these descriptions just don't do Him justice) He is. And thus in return, we properly view ourselves in relation to Him, which ultimately humbles us. And as a result of increasing our view of God and humbling ourselves, we draw closer to Him.

Any book that can help encourage and increase our view of God while decreasing our view of ourselves, and therefore, draw us closer to our Creator, well that deserves not just a read, but a study. Check it out, I think it'll be worth your time.

I loved this book--used it for my women's Bible study over the course of (I think) three different sessions--so basically picked & chose different names based on some categories that seemed to coalesce as I looked through the chapter titles. I liked the depth she went into, and the five-days-a-week approach works well & breaks up the reading into do-able segments--also lent itself well to "what will we cover in class". As mentioned by another reviewer, too, I would prefer if the author would capitalize the pronouns referring to God (He, Him) to help "honor" God in our minds as we read--but I don't find that a difficulty myself, just a preference. Strongly recommend this book for those who want to know more about Christ's qualities & work.

This is a thoroughly-researched, incredibly well-written set of devotions that draw one into the heart of Jesus, a little more each day. The author draws on scripture as well as some respected Christian authors to give us a much fuller picture of our Savior. There are probing questions and soul-satisfying answers for every name of Jesus studied through the 26-week journey. Thank you, Ann Spangler, for another amazing, God-honoring devotional!
