I would most definitely utilize this book while teaching children about the various types of weather and precipitation. The book is so versatile in its description of snow and children will gain a simple, yet thorough lesson on what snow is like, other types of precipitation to compare it to and what they can do in the snow. I would pair this book with an activity of cutting out snowflakes for one activity. For another activity, I'd bring slushed ice, small, round (Sonic restaurant-type ice), and water for children to play with and describe and compare them all and associate with weather and precipitation.
#Fiction Children Literature (Illustrated ) Grade Level preschool -1st I find this is a great book for class. Jean Marzollo did a great job of explain the difference between precipitation in the first three pages simply with a repetitive bounce. Deeper in she explains very well the different texture snow can make and what's the best use for them. Which I appreciate, because even I (A person who never seen cover my lawn) didn't know there was wet vs dry rain. She also explains how unique each snowflake, how many sides they have and also the many activities there are available . My Favorite is that there's also a craft activity that kids can participate in. Judith Moffatt use the illustration to give honor to the craft by making the picture look like they were made out of very bold color construction paper. There are many different textures that adds a more realistic vibe and aid Marzollo show how smooth snow is.
This is a good book to read to students if you want to teach them about different types of weather, particularly snow. In the beginning of the book, it goes over some other types of weather that snow is not, such as hale. In places where there isn't a lot of snow, reading this book and talking about it and opening it up for conversation will get the children at least a little more familiar with how it is. In conjunction with reading this book, I would even create an activity where the children can make their own snow, or have them participate in a science project to see how it is made. Those activities would be most appropriate for areas that usually have little to no snow.
The simple illustrations and great explanations make this a good book for children to read. In this book, the children learn about snow and what they can do with it. This is a great book to read to children because it teaches information in a fun and comfortable way. Instead of a lecture, the book explains with words and pictures that are used in a fun and easy way to read. All in all, I would recommend this book to all people that want to teach their children about snow.
