Fact: On July 28th 1952 Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent a memo to his chief scientific advisor Lord Cherwell stating: What does all this stuff about flying saucers amount to? What can it mean? What is the truth? Let me have a report at your convenience. At the time renowned scientist Henry Tizard was head of a classified research group known as ‘The Flying Saucer Working Party’ Established in October 1950 its purpose was to gather intelligence on Unidentified Flying Objects. Their goal was to determine whether or not UFOs posed a threat to the security of the United Kingdom. Tizard believed that Flying saucers should not be so easily dismissed due to the amount of reports flooding in from public and military personnel. The group remained classified until 1991 when a request was made under the freedom of information act, to release documents relating to the FSWP. Fiction: When Chief Scientific Advisor Professor Ralph Frederick is summoned to the Prime Minister’s office his world is turned upside down by an unusual request from the wartime leader. Professor Frederick is tasked with establishing a highly classified researched group whose key function is to gather intelligence on flying saucers. A sceptical Frederick contacts former wartime colleagues and former members on an elite secret society known as the Cambridge Apostles to form a committee codenamed ‘Angel’. With his team assembled Frederick begins to look into UFO sightings and is soon drawn into world of mystery, espionage and a race to develop a technology captured by both the US and Soviet Superpowers. A technology hundreds of years more advanced and a technology which will determine the outright winner of the new Cold War. From the corridors of power in Whitehall, to the sleepy North Yorkshire countryside and finally a Top Secret research facility located in the Nevada desert Frederick’s faith and scientific knowledge are pushed to their limits. In their quest to discover the truth Frederick and his team discover that not all allies are friends, and not all foes are enemies, and that there are men prepared to sell out the human race in exchange for power and wealth. The Angel Committee dramatises UFO encounters of the 50s based on real life encounters and is the first part of a trilogy of novels following the exploits of Professor Frederick.
The author of The Angel Committee advises readers he “has always been fascinated by science and the unexplained” and he “researched a lot of UFO sightings both in the UK and the Unites States of America.” Which probably explains why this reader was left wondering where the fiction begins and where the truth ends in this superior novel…
No surprises then that the amount of detail within its pages is impressive – as are the thrills, mystery, tension and twists.
This is a high-speed story that UFOlogists will love. Better than that: it’s tale that will appeal to anyone who loves a quality thriller (with a healthy dose of science fiction).
I received an electronic copy of The Angel Committee for an honest review. Due to the rough editing of this book, especially grammar mistakes such as missing commas, I am rating this book a three. It was a unique, alternative version of history during the early 1950's. The Angel Committee was formed to track possible alien sightings and substantiate or refute those encounters. Although I thought the concept was unique, I found it hard to follow at times because of the constant changing of time and place. If you are a fan of alternative history and science fiction, you would enjoy this book.
Could not put the book down. The story pulls you in an holds you captive. Already looking forward to reading the next book. Loved the story and the characters were so real that it will be a while before this book is a memory.
6/24/1947 Kenneth Arnold (civilian pilot) observed a UFO while flying over the Cascade Mountains Brian Jones (son) & Edith Jones (Brian wife/mother) were taking a drive & a huge mysterious bright light appeared in the dark. The car quit & then suddenly started up again. Edith had vanished. Brian was interrogated but nothing substantial was ever uncovered.
He wants a new team formed to investigate the UFO’s. Members of the Flying Saucer Working Party committee are: Professor Ralph Frederick (Cambridge); Sir Malcolm Chambers (War office); Sir Morris Stanford (Head of British Intelligence); Air Marshall Sir Ian Morgan (Director of Intelligence Air Ministry); 1st Sea Lord Admiral Anthony Berkshire (Royal Navy); Sir Harold Bates (former scientific advisor to Lord Chamberlin); Dr. Alan Good (Cambridge); Professor Richard Wilks (Astronomer Royal, Royal Observatory Greenwich); Dr. Arthur Lloyd (Oxford, psychologist, Physician to His Royal Highness George VI); & Professor Norman Canning (Bletchley Park). Project Blue Book is headed up by Professor J. Allen Hynek. The 2 previous Flying Saucer Phenomena investigations were: Project Sign & Project Grudge.
A really bizarre event happened to pregnant Edith Jones. She disappeared & then repapered & the baby was nowhere to be found. Later Edith & her husband both died?
The Hammer of Thor (Mjölnir) is being looked for by an exhibition team headed by Professor Ralph Frederick & Professor Norman Canning (60, geology, history). Then there is Mary Trembles, what is her story?
The Majestic 12 Group members consists of: Professor Ralph Frederick (Cambridge), Roscoe Hillenkotter, Donald Menzel, General Nathan Twining, Senator Jacob Barnes, General Frank Stacy, Malcolm Chambers, Morris Stanford, Richard Wilks, & Ian Morgan. Edith Jones will tell her story to the group.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly well written historical true/false sci-fi book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were lots of grammar/typo errors (the author assured me they are corrected), but no repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great sci-fi movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. To be continued. I will have to rate it at 5 stars. Thank you for the free Goodreads; PDF book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
Despite my enjoyment of the story and characters, it was a stretch to give two stars. There are grammatical errors, misspellings, and incorrectly used words on every (yes-every) page!!! At times I was reminded of feverishly writing papers the night before the deadline; no rough drafts or editing. At other times I wondered if English was a second (third? Fourth?) language for the author and he should stick to his native language when writing. That's why we have interpreters, right? I am not normally upset by a few mistakes and I do not claim any expertise in language or writing. There is no need of an expert to find the problems here. This book is the first in a series. Will I reach for book two? I'm a little afraid. Maybe the audiobook?
I received a copy of this book for a honest review.
I like that this book was true to the time. Using the people who were in power at that time in the world part of the book's store. I also like that is look like I was reading a private document about the events that took place. I also like that the UFO sighting and the events were so well written. Enough to keep you wanting more but not so over the top to make you lose interested.
