A painter and illustrator who uses photography in his work shows how it can be an invaluable aid, both as raw material and as a stimulus to the imagination. 52 color plates. 150 black-and-white illustrations.
The parts where he writes about working on the images directly are great but a lot of the information is no longer relevant since many people have access to phone cameras and free and cheap photo editing app.
The info about altering a photo and how to pick photos for a painting or drawing are timeless though!
To be honest, I paint from photographs and I got this book from the library. I found it to be not very helpful. Published in 1975, some of the techniques he speaks about are either known or out-of-date. Also, it is not very helpful to be writing about color when most of the illustrations in the book are black and white. There are a few color illustrations, but again, I found them to be lacking. There are probably better books out there on painting from photographs.
