You have to veer off the beaten track to experience the soul and spirit of "The Land of Enchantment," and no one knows that inside track better than author Sally Moore. Follow Moore along side roads and quiet trails to trading posts and abandoned stone cities, hidden canyons and soaring vistas, Spanish missions and outlaw hideouts. Ten neatly packaged day trips and weekend getaways take travelers and natives to the fabled, infamous, and stunningly beautiful spots, and reveal the tall tales and scintillating stories behind them. Backroads & Byways of New Mexico is the shortest route a visitor can take to exploring like a native, and for natives to delve more deeply into the history and magic of their home state. 50 black-and-white photographs
After my disappointment with the "New Mexico Scenic & Historic Byways" I pulled this book off the shelf and dove in head-on. No disappointment here. Sally Moore does a terrific job communicating much information for each of the ten highlighted trip. From detailed directions to lists of resources, bits of history, attractions, bed & breakfast and lodges, local eateries and shopping the reader can plan outstanding jaunts to fit their own interests and time frame.
I've spent many vacations in New Mexico and have visited/eaten/stayed at many of Moore's selections. Indeed, while I still have more to cover I could check off sites in each of the ten chapters. I'm quite certain that Moore traveled every inch of the roads covered, and experienced the sites herself. This is not a collection of material from other resources. Her book makes a great travel companion for exploring New Mexico.
Although my addition is ten years old, I found the majority of the information still applicable. A few of the business have gone by the wayside but this is still a useful resource.
