This is a pocket version companion to Birds of the Indian Subcontinent" covering all the bird species found in India, Pakistian, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and the Maldives. The plates face the descriptions for quick at-a glance reference. This guide provides tables, summarising identification features of particularly difficult groups such as nightjars, warblers and rosefinches."
An ideal beginners guide to birds of India. The distribution maps of birds are really helpful. But it's uniqueness lies in the illustrations, which are crisp and clear than a majority of entry level bird guides. This makes a huge difference while identifying birds either in the field or after a birding excursion. The descriptions are fairly alright; surely not at good as Sálim Ali's in The Book of Indian Birds. My suggestion would be to use this guide for illustrations and distribution maps and Salim Ali's for the descriptions, especially for an amateur birder.
A great starting point for novice bird enthusiasts and great guide to learn about birds of the Indian subcontinent.
PS: The newer edition of this guide, i.e. Birds of the Indian Subcontinent has better description (but not as clear as Salim Ali's in terms of avian behaviour), updated distribution maps, and more realistic illustrations.
