This book was given to me oh so long ago by a teacher. She was my first grade teacher, my 5th grade teacher, and ultimately my high school teacher for Honors English, Literature, and Creative Writing. First she loaned me hers, which I kept until well after graduation. Then I was given my own. There are quotes, poetry, prose, prayers and inspirational notes - for every subject, situation or feeling you can imagine.
This book has very sentimental meaning for me. One of my favorites is, "Sermons We See." Another is, "The happiest heart that ever beat, as in some quiet breast. Who found the common daylight sweet....and left to Heaven the rest."
On a whim one day, I picked this book up from under a glass on a coffee table that had been there since my parents passed away. A page per day helped to get my day off to a positive start. My version of the book was a Christmas present from my grandmother to my mom in 1963. Many of the readings were he, his, and him versus today where books are written gender neutral but I just translated as I read to make it more meaningful to me. The thoughts are timeless by some of the best known writers, poets, thinkers, politicians, spiritual leaders, and philosophers throughout history.
"Into my heart's treasury I slipped a coin, That time cannot rust Nor a thief purloin; Oh, better than the minting Of a gold-crowned king Is the safe-kept memory Of a lovely Thing."
I had given this book to my mother many years ago. After she passed, my brother had it and then passed it on to me. It is not only a treasure of prose and verse, but because my mother wrote little notes about some of the passages and underlined others it is especially "golden" to me.
A wonderful grouping of scripture, poems and sayings from many people. If you like either then you should definitely read this book. It comes in different colored covers. The content is still just as meaningful. Check it out!
This is a charming book, old fashioned in format and delightful to hold and read. The words are inspiring, humorous, rich and full of wisdom and it did my heart, soul, and mind to read them.
My Best Friend Forever for about 60 years, recently found this exact copy of the 1939 Leaves of Gold in a second hand shop and sent it to me! I have always loved the book, but never owned my own copy. The book is gorgeous, but the literary works contained within are indeed golden. Brings me tears of joy as I thumb through the pages and read my old favorites. These were my grandmother's and mother's favorites as well! Classic.
There are some amazing snip its and poems in this short book. I have enjoyed thumbing through it and reading the poems, thoughts, quotes, and words of wisdom on so many different topics! Some are dated, but are still applicable to everyday life today. I really recommend this to anyone and everyone.
I have the 1951 version and I love it. These pages were put together perfectly to encourage as well inspire people about life. I have no idea why this book didn't come into my life sooner.
I have this beautiful collection. It was given to me back in 1989. It's still just as lovely today. The man who gave it to me passed long ago, but this collection is timeless.
I. paid for this book to be mai!ed to me not put here in Goodreads. It is a favorite and physical copy is lost.....hence I wanted this mailed to me.....clear yet ?
Wonderful book - classic - beautiful and out on display. Used - inscription from a grandmother to her grandson "may God bless you good and keep a hand on your shoulder always" made the book even more special. Reading to inspire, knowledge to re-read over and over again. Highly recommend.
