After her abusive husband’s death, the Duchess of Gooding has been relegated to Kent’s Row, a place where widows are put out to pasture. Valaria isn’t upset by this. She’s running from her past and happy to be independent and away from prying eyes. And she knows she won’t be lonely after she meets and befriends two other young dowager duchesses who are also residing in the Row. Oh yes, life could be perfect…as long as no one ever finds out her secret.
Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, was best mates with Valaria’s late husband and he mourns his friend’s untimely death. He also finds himself concerned about Valaria, especially when he hears she has been all but kicked out of her home and onto Kent’s Row. Convincing himself it isn’t about the attraction he’s always felt for the prickly duchess, he vows to do what he can to help her.
Of all the people in the world, Valaria cannot let Callum near her. But his honor and decency keep edging around her walls. As does the unexpected desire he makes her feel. Resistance turns to surrender, an affair to something deeper and soon all that she is trying to keep secret will spill out. Will what she’s done come between them and tear apart all they are starting to build? Or could he love her enough to fight for their future and protect her from her past?
This is the first in The Kent’s Row Duchesses Series and can be read as a standalone book.

Jess Michaels is one of those authors I know I will always get a good read. I have read, including this one, 68 of her books. That just seems crazy. She has been one of my favorites for a long time. I don’t think I’ve read a bad book by her. She is one of the first authors I started reading when I got my kindle fire in 2015. I love seeing a new series coming out.
OMG, I loved this book. I loved Callum and Valaria. I loved their story, their personalities, their friends. I even shed a tear or two. The sex was hot and made even better by their characters. I loved the intrigue and it was just an overall great read. I couldn’t put it down. This is going on my list of favorites for July. If I could give 10 stars, I would.
4.5 Stars Valaria, the Duchess of Gooding has been relegated to Kent’s Row after her husban's death, a place where widows are put out to pasture. Valaria isn’t upset by this. as she’s happy to be independent and away from prying eyes. She meets and befriends two other young dowager duchesses who are also residing in the Row. Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, was best friends with Valaria’s late husband Si and he mourns his friend’s untimely death. He also finds himself concerned about Valaria, especially when he hears she has been all but kicked out of her home and onto Kent’s Row. The first in a new series & once again I was drawn in from the start, I loved both Callum & Valaria, both strong characters especially Valaria who had been in an arranged, loveless abusive marriage. He was caring & protective of Valaria so it was difficult to believe he didn’t know Si's true nature when everyone else had an inkling. That aside I loved the couple's rocky journey to a HEA, there were secrets, sizzling chemistry, healing, learning to trust & realising that love existed. My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

After the death of her abusive husband, Valaria, the Duchess of Gooding has been relegated to a section of town called Kent's Row where she befriends two other widowed duchesses. An unexpected friendship between the three begins. Callum Osgood, the Duke of Blackvale, was the best friend of her late husband and he mourns his death, but he didn't know the way Valaria was treated. He has always held a tendre for her, but he could never act on it out of respect for his friend. Once he finds out the truth about their situation, Callum now wants to protect and love her, but Valaria isn't ready and doesn't know if she ever will be. She has secrets that no one can ever find out about, and she must keep everyone at arm's length or else her life could be ruined.
I have enjoyed the last couple of series that I have read of Jess Michaels, but I think this one struggled from first book syndrome. There was a lot of characters to introduce, a lot of plot history that needed to be explained, and I just think it bogged down the pacing a little bit. Did I like it? Yes, but I think there were some issues with it as well. I never really connected with Valaria. Did I feel bad for her? Sure, but I would have liked her to open up a little bit more with Callum earlier on so their relationship could build more. I did like how supportive Callum was to her, and that he didn't judge her when her secrets were exposed. He was extremely understanding.
I think I am more excited for books two and three. She set them up well, and I know that this series will only get better as it goes on.
No Dukes Allowed. This is such a beautiful story. I was my pleasure to have read this love story. A -true -love -story. The romance exposes two souls that so clearly belong together. The story reminds Valarie and Callum that they are free to fall in love with whom ever holds the key to their heart. Good friends reminds them that love doesn’t come easy. If two people such as Valeria and Callum are willing to fight for one another no matter what, then it’s worth unlocking your heart for that person. The writer did a magnificent job of telling a story that touches and warms the heart. The story goes to a place that people protect and hold dear to them. I loved following the emotions and the strong passion that Callum has for Valeria. There are so many moments in the book that Callum fights for Valeria and for everything that she is. I could feel his emotions through the brilliant dialogue between him and the characters. The same could be said for Valeria. I do think that she should have been written in as a stronger character, but I can understand the writer’s reasoning of taking Valerie’s character in the book’s direction. I have to say that you are going to love the love scenes between these two. Talk about hot. Lord, Callum is like a God in the bedroom. These two had too much fun in too many places to list. The characters are marvelous. The writing is perfect. The story is entertaining. And the romance is at a high. I give this story two snaps and a, person one: I want to talk to you. Person two: And I want to lick you. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book for a voluntary honest review
Jess Michaels has written another wonderful story! This story includes two MCs (Callum & Valeria) who are brought together after Valeria is widowed. Valeria’s first marriage was not a bed of roses and after her scum bucket husband dies she is left piecing her life together, learning who she can trust, and learning what being loved by someone actually includes. Callum, Duke of Blackwell, was a friend of Valeria’s husband and he carries a sense of guilt towards Valaria - however, he also has burgeoning fondness and affection for Valaria - he isn’t quite sure how he feels about all these emotions or what he should actually do about them. Watching the growing relationship and building passion between Valaria and Callum was entertaining and fulfilling. I can’t wait to read future books about the wonderful supporting characters included throughout this story! I’m obviously missing something as I don’t get how this book has such a high rating. The writing was ok but so many dukes and duchesses! Literally everyone in the book who wasn’t a servant was a duke or duchess. And absolutely no attempt to hide their affair. And would she have been wearing drawers at that time? And so many “long glasses of whisky”. All niggling things that kept pulling me out of the story.
And I’m usually okay with Insta-love but this was too much - it needed a couple of instances of the main couple actually just talking about their likes or dislikes or everyday things to get to know each other to make it more believable. Instead, every time they got within three feet of each other it was angsty and/or they were having sex (no matter where they were). The scene where they snuck off in the middle of a dinner party with their friends (at their friends house) was super creepy to me, I just kept thinking of how awkward it would be for the friends in the other room. And then his friend to know that they’d been doing it on his couch in his library 🤢.
The fact that they both like to look out the window while they’re brooding does not mean they’re soulmates 🙄. Finally, not only did she supposedly fall deeply in love in the space of I think two weeks, she also made two BFFs. My disbelief couldn’t stretch that far.
Every time I accidentally buy a Jess Michaels, I regret it. I wish Amazon had a way to block authors from being advertised. The story was largely plotless and the heroine was obnoxious.
Shortly after the death of her husband, Silas, the Duke of Gooding, Valaria St. Clare, the Duchess of Gooding, takes up residence in Kent’s Row and immediately meets two other young widowed duchesses who also live on the street (apparently it is a dumping grounds for widowed duchesses). She longs to befriend the ladies, but Valaria has secrets that are not hers alone and can’t risk getting too close to anyone. Especially her late husband’s best friend, Callum Osgood, the Duke of Blackvale. Unfortunately for her, Callum feels responsible for her and wants to help her (and kiss her), so she tries to keep him at bay, but she feels a desire for him that she had never felt. She decides that it is better to keep your enemies close and a secret affair ensues, but soon she is falling for him and knows that if he ever learns the truth, he will hate her.
At first Callum Osgood’s, the Duke of Blackvale, main concern is ensuring that Valaria is taken care of, he feels that as Silas’ best friend, he would want him to see to her needs, but later he learns from his good friend Theo, the Duke of Lightmorrow, that Silas was not the man Callum believed him to be, that he was cruel and abusive to others and most likely to Valaria. Callum is appalled and though he has tried to stay away from her, he needs to know the truth about her marriage. But the truth just serves to make him feel guilty, for not seeing what was happening and that guilt only gets worse when he finally admits that he has always desired Valaria. But the desire is not as one-sided as he believed and they soon embark on an affair, and tender feelings will blossom into love, can this burgeoning love survive Valaria’s secret?
This was a good story, if somewhat predictable, I knew her secret before the end of the first chapter, but it isn’t revealed “on page” until nearly the end of the book, which I felt caused the story to drag a bit. I am not sure I completely believe that Callum didn’t know Silas’ propensity for abuse, it seems a bit of a stretch considering they were “best friends” since childhood and spent a considerable amount of time together, I don’t see how a person could hide their true nature, especially when drinking or that Callum never heard whispers about him. That issue aside, I did enjoy this book, it is filled with secrets, great characters, steamy love scenes, emotional healing, true love, and finally a HEA complete with an epilogue. This is the first book in the series and I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
3.5 stars rounded up. This could have been a 3 star read for me, but I really enjoyed the emotional (as well as the physical) relationship between Callum and Valaria. Callum was the sort of cinnamon roll hero I was in the mood for, and this quick, escapist HR just clicked with me. The storyline focuses on Valaria's psychological recovery from trauma, and in the later chapters there was a heartfelt quality to the author's writing that I didn't sense from some of her previous books.
As for secondary characters, the Duchess of Amberleigh is a scene stealer who I expect will pop up in upcoming entries in this series. Valaria's friends Flora and Bernandette, as well as Callum's friend Theo, were a decent supporting cast (and will feature in future entries).
The weaknesses of this book? Mainly the plot, which is predictable, and the slow pacing in the opening chapters. We know that the MC's are going to get together, so I felt that there really needed to be another element other than sexual tension and steam keeping the storyline afloat. I also didn't buy that Callum was best friends with Valaria's awful husband. It would have worked better if he had drifted apart from Silas over the years, but then Silas had tried to befriend him for his money and status. Valaria had mentioned that Silas kept talking to her about Callum's prowess, which I thought could have worked into some interesting plotpoints early on (was Silas bent on hurting Callum's reputation if he didn't go along with some unsavory plans he and his gross cronies had in store? Or maybe Silas was sexually obsessed with him?).
On the topic of steam, that elevated this book just enough. Jess Michaels knows how to write a spicy scene, and there's something really hot about a sweet guy who simply loves bringing a woman pleasure.
The emotion works, even if the plot sags at times.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary review. Opinions are my own.
Another young grieving widow is taking up residence on Kent’s Row, where dowager duchesses are put out to pasture. Nosy neighbours is the last thing Valaria St. Clare, dowager Duchess of Gooding wants. She wants peace, quiet and a safe haven where she and her terrible secret can be forgotten by society. Instead she’s accosted by two dowagers her own age. They’re friends and want to welcome her. And then her late husband’s best friend imposes his friendship upon her. The man puzzles her. He’s nothing like her cruel and abusive husband was. He stood out amongst his set of cronies. He’s handsome, for sure, but she wants to be left alone. She’s suffered enough.
When his best friend suddenly died in an accident, Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, felt lost in his own grief. Coming up for air, he realises he should look in on the man’s widow. He should make sure she’s settled after being pushed out of her home by the new duke after barely eight weeks. He’s admired her from their very first introduction. Beautiful, regal, but quite withdrawn. Their conversations brief but memorable. At least to him. He offers her nothing but friendship, yet is turned away with suspicion and hurt in her eyes.
Drawn together by circumstance and an invisible thread of attraction neither of them ever dared to acknowledge, a careful bond is formed. Temptation and desire. Is a moment of pleasure worth her secrets?
📚 An original plot about a decent and honourable nobleman nursing a broken and scared lady back to happiness. A suspicious death, mystery, secrets, scandal and a found family of new friends. Fascinating characters in an intriguing and compelling tale of tender feelings, pining, undeniable attraction and lust. I liked it very much and I’m curious about the next books in the series! 📚 Husband’s best friend/widow, pining, steamy, open door, secret romance
Thank you to the author for this eARC! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Valaria, the recently widowed Duchess of Gooding is deeply emotionally scarred by her marriage to the abusive, bullying late Duke, and in general has a lack of trust and faith in men because of the lack of support and care from her father and brothers. The new Duke ousts her from her marital home, and she finds herself on Kent's Row, where apparently Dowagers go to roost. There, the previously isolated widow finds herself making new friends with other widowed duchesses.
But it is difficult for her to open up, especially as she has a large secret to hide.
Callum, the Duke of Blackvale mourns the loss of his best friend, the Duke of Gooding, and finds himself seeking out Valaria to ensure her wellbeing and offer his support. She does not trust his intentions, as her abusive husband's best friend and ally. Callum however, is a good and honorable man who was ignorant of Gooding's true nature. Callum seems to be good at fooling himself, because he has also suppressed his own attraction to Valaria over the years, as the wife of his best friend.
This is an steamy, emotional read about romance, trust, and the development of the friendships of the other members of Kent's Row. Initially Valaria and Callum appease their heated attraction to each other with a secret affair, but that becomes quickly more. It was eye opening for Callum to learn about the true nature of his friend, as his love for Valaria grows, but difficult for Valaria to trust in others, after her experiences, and because of a secret she is hiding to protect herself and others. But Callum works hard to prove that he is nothing like Gooding was, or the other men in her life, and not stifle her or threaten her freedom and safety. it was very emotionally rewarding when she does open up to Callum and her friends, and finds the freedom to love and trust again.
No Duke's Allowed is the first book in The Kent Row series.
Valeria, the Duchess of Gooding is moving into her new home on Kent’s Row. Her husband has died, and the new heir has decided to move her to where widows are put out to pasture. It isn't as grand as her former home, but it is clean. As she approaches her new residence, Valaria meets two other Dutchesses that also live there and are much closer to her in age. They welcome her and hope to become great friends. While she is grateful to meet them, she knows that she will need to be careful to keep her secrets from being revealed.
Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, was a good friend of Valaria’s late husband and he mourns his friend’s untimely death. He feels as if he should help her if needed, believing he owes it to his friend. Callum has always felt something for Valeria but has kept a respectful distance.
Valaria does not want the attention of Callum but he insists on making sure she is well cared for. Valeria puts up the walls she has built to protect her from those that were supposed to care about her but did not.
The couple come to an agreement, but things get out of control and Valeria feels threatened and pushes Callum away. Valeria is fearful the truth about what happened when her husband died, that she will be hated and shunned by all. Will Callum be able to protect her from her fears.
This was a wonderful beginning to a new series. I like the characters and the Kent Row plotline. The story is well written and full of sexual tension as it builds to the reveal as to what made Valeria so fearful. A preview of the next book was included at the end, and it appears that then next book uses some of the characters from the first. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
This book was beautifully written and the words flowed well on the page, but I can't say that it enthralled me. I liked it, but I didn't fall in love with the characters.
The synopsis sums it up well: Valaria is a widow; her late husband was abusive. Callum was her husband's BFF. Valaria and her maid, Fanny, share secrets related to Valaria's husband's death—secrets they keep from everyone, including the reader. The secrecy isn't necessary because it's pretty obvious what happened. Valaria has moved to a row of dowager duchesses (who knew there were so many dukes in England), where she plans to stay in morose shadows. Two other friendly young dowagers befriend her, however, and Callum (another duke) can't seem to stay away.
When Valaria isn't being gloomy, she's busy engaging in sexy times with Callum. At least two of those times are during intimate gatherings of friends, which seems both unlikely and stupid. And when a little suspense is introduced towards the end, the truth is obvious, in spite of a red herring thrown casually in to the mix.
I'd rather have had Valaria confide much earlier in Callum and her friends and then have the book spend more time showing us how well-suited Valaria and Callum are (instead of just telling us so). In the end, I found myself skipping the sexy times just to finish.
I suspect many readers will like this book. Valaria and Callum are both very kind, as are their friends. However, although the story is well told, I won't likely pick up the future books in this series (books that are teased throughout this novel and its epilogue).
I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
No Dukes Allowed by Jess Michaels The Kent’s Row Duchesses #1
Another wonderful book by an expert story teller ~ Could not put it down!
What I liked: * Valaria: young widow, had a difficult husband and marriage, keeping a deep dark secret, has trust issues, survivor of abuse, always a bit taken with Callum * Callum: Duke of Blackvale, was friend to Valaria’s husband, feels an obligation to Valaria, has mixed feelings regarding his feelings for Valaria, really liked him * The chemistry between Valaria and Callum * That the two were mature in their relationship and ability to communicate – eventually * That though abused, Valaria was not broken * The strength of character and will both lead characters exhibited * Finding out the source of the friendship between Callum and Silas * The good friends and supporting characters that will probably star or appear in the next two books: Theo, Bernadette, Flora, and perhaps the duchess of Amberleigh * The protectiveness and caring Valaria showed for her maid – wonder if Fanny will find love, too * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how evil and abusive more than one man in this story was and how laws of the era did not allot women many if any rights – no matter their station in society * Thinking about the stress Valaria must have lived under through much of her life
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I always enjoy Jess Michaels’s books and this one was not an exception! After her abusive husband’s death, the Duchess of Gooding has been relegated to Kent’s Row, a place where widows are put out to pasture. Valaria is running from her past and happy to be independent and away from prying eyes. And she knows she won’t be lonely after she meets and befriends two other young dowager duchesses who are also residing in the Row. Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, was best mates with Valaria’s late husband and he mourns his friend’s untimely death. He also finds himself concerned about Valaria, so he vows to do what he can to help her. This book is emotional, sweet and passionate. I loved Valaria and suffered with her. She is generous and resilient. Callum is so sweet that is impossible not to love him. They are so good and perfect together! All their friends are amazing secondary characters. It’s steamy, easy to read and engaging. I enjoyed this book a lot and I’ll be waiting for the next one in the series!! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A steamy story. I struggled with this one and nearly gave up in the middle. Firstly there are just too many dukes and duchesses, no one else seems to exist. Secondly why are all these dowagers apparently living in one street, which for all the world is portrayed as being tantamount to being sheltered housing for dowagers! I believe the vast majority of dowagers would have had the right to occupy the dower house or at least some housing on one or other of the ducal estates. Yes there will be exceptions, but not a whole street full! Then we have the two main characters. Too much ‘do I , don’t I’ for me. They also go off together at small gathering of friends, which must be embarrassing for all concerned. Presumably their friends pretend not to notice that 2 out of 5 people have disappeared! Then I am sure there would be comments about the duke calling at her house virtually everyday of the week. As she is trying to keep a low profile…..! As for the duke did he really not know what Silas was like. He knew he was a bully at the age of 13, has been a close friend for what must be 15 years or more but never realised what he was like, despite the everyone else being aware how awful he was! On top of this I think we could all see what the big secret was from the beginning, and guess the blackmailer as soon as they appeared. I will try the next one in this series in the hope it picks up.
No Dukes Allowed is the first of a new series from Jess Michaels, and I love the premise, following duchesses who don’t have family on whom they can rely for lodgings, and they’re sent to live in the designated Kent’s Row. It’s off to an intriguing start, with a second chance romance I couldn’t help but root for, borne out of the ashes of tragedy. Valaria is easy to root for, having escaped her toxic marriage to her deceased husband, and while I got the sense right away that their marriage wasn’t a happy one, there were some surprises as to what really went on that caught me off guard, including a plot twist that fed into an external plot point. While I’ve grown a little wary of the abused heroine ending up with her abusive husband’s best friend, because the company you keep does say a lot about you, any concerns in that area were assuaged upon getting to know Callum. He is a genuinely good person who cares for Valaria, from initial concern for her well-being to something deeper growing between them as their relationship continues. This is a solid historical romance read, with the perfect balance of emotional weight and Jess Michaels’ signature steamy romantic touch. If you enjoy sexy historical romance, I’d recommend checking this out!
After her abusive husband’s death, Valeria, Duchess of Gooding, is trying to keep things from the past a secret. That means trying to avoid Callum Osgood, Duke of Blackvale, her late husband's best friend. But while Callum has always felt (and denied) an attraction to the duchess, the tension and steam seems to keep rising between them.
This is the first book in the Kent's Row Duchesses series. Kent’s Row is a neighborhood where widows are "put out to pasture" but a trio of young widows strike up a friendship. There is a clear set up for the two upcoming heroines.
I really like Jess Michaels' writing but the secret keeping in this particular plot was frustrating for me. While I suspected the eventual secret, the reveal took much too long to come out, which cast a cloud over the characters' chemistry. It was an easy read but won't be a lasting favorite like some of her other books. The set up for the next book sounds promising though!
Tropes: Widow, Hero Falls First, Late Husband's Best Friend, Second Chance, Compromised
I wasn’t sure about this book in the beginning since the main characters seemed kind of bland. It took some time to get to know them since Valaria is so guarded and Callum is cautious with Valaria. They are really lovely together as events unfold. There is kindness and understanding besides the spicy romance scenes.
There is a big secret that divides them and so their romance was a little slow. I kind of guessed the secret but I did like the reveal m, how it brings the characters together and how it plays with the end of the story.
My favorite part was the friendship between Valaria, Bernadette and Flora. The duchesses of Kent Row are all widows of different ages with varieties of experience in their marriages and afterwards. Valaria really needed some allies and friends.
I’m excited to see the stories of Bernadette and Flora. I love the fivesome of the duchesses with Callum and Theo. It is a nice group and I love how the events that bind them together. Overall, I enjoyed this book but took some time for me to really get into it.
*Received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This is a story of the Duchess of Gooding who is newly widowed and moved to an area in London called Kent's Row- where widows of prominent nobleman go to live after their spouse passes away. After her husband's best friend, Callum, the Duke of Blackvale learns of her move, he visits her and offers to assist her in anyway he can to make her adjustment to her move/new life easier. The Duchess of Gooding, Valaria, does everything she can to avoid seeing Callum because she fears she will not be able to keep her secret from him. Even as she tries to avoid interactions with him on the guise of her mourning; Callum gets creative and invites 2 other dowager duchesses she has become friends with since moving to her new home and his friend, the Duke of Lightmorrow to dinner at his home. This book was well written and kept my interest until I turned the last page because I wanted to know what secrets Valaria was desperate to keep hidden and why she kept rebuffing Callum's efforts to assist her. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series from this author.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
this was fine, hence the three stars. I just wished it could've been more. the characters, Valaria and Connor, were well-written but seemed to have no build up (to me). from moment one they wanted each other and that was that. I never once believed they wouldn't be together forever, despite Valaria's secret. Which was also very predictable. That in itself is fine, if the story then doesn't take until 80% in to actually tell the secret and have it have absolutely zero consequences. You can't build up to nothing, it leaves readers wanting.
Another pet peeve I had was the name Valaria. I'm so sorry but I hate it so much. I think it sounds like a disease they had in those times and once the thought popped into my head I couldn't take anyone serious if they said her name.
Overall, a perfectly acceptable book, it might just not have been for me. But, when the next part comes out, I will be here, don't you fret..... it looks promising
No Dukes Allowed by Jess Michaels is the first book in a series called The Kent Row Duchesses. There is at least one more book planned and I suspect another one will be forthcoming. The novel focused on Valaria, the Duchess of Gooding and her life after the death of her husband. Valaria is pushed out of the family home and into a house in Kent Row. It is a place famous for all the widows that live there after their rich husbands die. In Valaria’s case, it is a place to hide.
The Duke of Blackvale, Callum, was friends with Valaria’s husband and feels that he needs to help care for her. What he struggles to recognize is that he has strong feelings for her. Valaria is determined to put him off and live a secluded life. He is determined to stay with her, helping her, loving her.
Valaria’s secret could cause a scandal and even legal actions. She is determined to hold the line, but denying Callum is next to impossible. Can her new found friends help her out of her dilemma? No Dukes Allowed by Jess Michaels is a quick HOT read.
No Dukes Allowed by Jess Michaels is the first book in The Kent’s Row Duchesses. I enjoyed the story though I’m still not quite sure how the title fits the story. I will definitely read the next book in the series.
Ms. Michaels did very nice job of creating the setting of Kent’s Row. I’m intrigued by the supporting cast of characters. That being said, Valaria and Callum are definitely the stars of the story.
Ms. Michaels definitely doesn’t hold back on the physicality or steam factor, and I’m here for it! Sometimes it’s easy to rely on the steam factor and not develop the story, but that’s not the case in No Dukes Allowed. Valaria is a sympathetic heroine, and Callum is a very supportive hero. I hope to see more of them in the following books.
I do feel that survivors of domestic violence should know that it is discussed in this book.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for Goodreads. Many thanks to Netgalley, who provided me with this novel in exchange for an honest review, here it is :
I have read several of Jess Michaels's historical romances and she hasn't disappointed me yet. What I particularly liked in this one was it dealt with an abusive marriage, something you don't read often about in this particular genre. Valaria's history reminded me a little of one of my favourite novels, "The tenant of Wildfell Hall". I loved Valaria, understood her diffidence of those around her, appreciated her slow opening to new friendships and even a new love. The only problem I had with her, truly, was her name : I read "malaria" every time ! Callum is a darling of a man, one like we would all love to meet. A faithful friend, if a little blind, and a devoted lover. This is a very good beginning to a new series, I'm glad Jess Michaels didn't give up on writing like she thought she would !
Jess Michaels is one of those authors that you auto buy their book because they are so good. No Duke’s allowed is the first book in The Kent’s Row Duchess. This series follow three widowed duchesses living in Kent’s row. the Heroine Valaria, Duchess of Gooding falling into bed with her late husband’s friend. These two engage to an affair that places Duchess Valaria in danger. The danger is a secret surrounding the death of her late husband. Can love prevail lies of omission and secrets?
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Valearia is a young widow, a Duchess, banished to Kent Row with other widowed dowager Duchess. Her late husband's friend, Callum, is also a duke, and he's been in love with Valaria from afar.
Valaria has a secret about the night her late husband died in a horse riding accud3nt (But it was not what I expected! ). She tries to hide the truth of the abuse and trauma she endured from her late husband but Callum learns how horrible the man had been. Valaria's new friends -- fellow young discarded duchesses -- find out, too. But Valerie has to learn the value of friendship and love.
This is a gender and sexy story and I loved the emotion. Callum is a good man. Valaria deserves to be happy.
Now this is the kind of story I love! It is told with so much heart and passion and it had me in its grips from beginning to end! The characters are something special too with Valeria trying to keep her secret and Callum realising that he has been in love with her for ages. The supporting cast of widows were wonderful and turned out to be true friends. So good to have another beautiful and well told story from Jess Michaels and I am looking forward to the next in this new and exciting series I read an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) supplied by Netgalley and my voluntary review is recorded above.
Love this start to a new series! Valaria was an abused wife, but her husband and she hid it well. Now he is dead and she has moved to a new home on a street with other dowager duchesses. Callum was her husband’s best friend and clueless to his true nature. He’s always been attracted to Valaria and reaches out to help her during her mourning.
They have great chemistry and Valaria struggles to get too involved because of secrets she holds and Callum struggles once he discovers his friend was not what he seemed.
Love this romance and story and excited for Flora and Etta’s stories!
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received this book as an ARC copy and it was my first Jess Michaels book! I am not always a fan of historical romances but Jess Michaels knocked this one out of the park!! I adored Valaria's strength and the way Callum always puts her needs before his own. The spice, the pining, and the intrigue gripped me until the very end. Valaria and Callum's love felt fated and I cannot wait to see the rest of the duchess trio find their happy endings!
No Dukes Allowed is the most wonderful rainy day read that I finished in one sitting. It is light and charming yet deliciously angsty. This book is absolutely perfect for fans of Lisa Kleypas, Sarah Maclean, and Tessa Dare!!
Jess Michaels delivers and emotional read in No Dukes Allowed. Valeria was married to the Duke of Gooding (ironic because he was anything but) and is relieved to be hiding on Kent Row with two other widowed duchess. Her husbands friend, Callum, the Duke of Blackvale (ironic because he's not a blackguard, quite the opposite).
Valeria has a terrible secret because of her crul and brutal husband. This is her redemption story and Callum is definitely a knght in shining armor. I really thought Callum was well written and he had his own arc. Recommend.
