Jenn Burke has loved out-of-this-world romance since she was a preteen reading about heroes and heroines kicking butt and falling in love. Now that she’s an author, she couldn’t be happier to bring adventure, romance, and sexy times to her readers.

Jenn is the author of a number of paranormal and science fiction romance titles, including the critically acclaimed Chaos Station science fiction romance series (authored with Kelly Jensen) and her newest series, Ashes & Dust, a spin-off of her fan-favorite Not Dead Yet series.

She’s been called a pocket-sized and puntastic Canadian on social media, and she’ll happily own that label. Jenn lives just outside of Ottawa, Ontario, with her husband and two kids, plus two dogs named after video game characters…because her geekiness knows no bounds.

I really enjoyed Give Up the Ghost by Jenn Burke, even more than the first in the series. Jenn Burke seems to get better and better over time!

Give Up the Ghost follows Not Dead Yet and should not be read as a stand-alone. It is heavily dependent prior knowledge of the characters and plot from the first book, and I liked following the same couple over time for a change.

I loved, loved, loved Wes. I think he is such an interesting, unique character, and that's saying a lot considering I've read hundreds of paranormal romances. I liked his chemistry with Rojas, and though they've had their ups and downs, I think they are a solid, emotionally strong couple. Jenn Burke isn't afraid to allow her characters their insecurities and differences, which makes them feel real.

I also was impressed by the author's plotting. The story moves along at a steady pace, but it will hook you and keep you reading long into the night. I loved the plotting and pacing, and I found the story to be incredibly compelling. I was really busy in my personal life while I was reading this book, but yet I kept coming back for more.

If you like your urban fantasy/paranormal romances to be a bit gritty, a bit sweet, and very, very interesting, you can't go wrong with this series. I can't wait to see where else Jenn Burke takes me in the Not Dead Yet world.

Update September 2019: Audiobook = ***5+++ completely bewitched... umm, or should I say beghosted (?) Stars*** Greg B. once again outdid himself !!!

----------------------------------------------

***4 - 4.5 Stars***

Guess what? I digged this even more than the first book!

Okay, so let me take some notes to put it in a nutshell:
Ähnliches Foto

Secrets, magic with the urge to backfire, a walking dead with anger issues and lots of ghoulies, ghosties and other rat-bat critters that go bump in the night...
Bildergebnis für pouty face gif

Hey now, what's with the pouty face? The only one who gets to make one would be me, since I'm a bit bummed about the missing LOL-moments of Not Dead Yet. But the story and especially Wes and Hudson with their uniqueness, their flaws and rough edges made more than up for it. The relationship development gave me heart-eyes, the character development is fantabulous and I loved everyone of their own brand of little family they gathered around them. The author also gets huge brownie points for adding some diversity to the picture.

And at the end there was a moment of great importance (for me anyway): nope, I don't mean my "nononononononono, this-can't-be-true" thought or my subsequent swooning. But.... NO CLIFFHANGER!!!! ;-) November cannot come soon enough!

As I've mentioned before, ghosts, evil spirits and vampires are so totally not my thing, but I cannot get enough of the universe Jenn Burke creates in her Not Dead Yet series. The first book in this series, Not Dead Yet, was a 5 star Recommended Read for me, and "Give Up the Ghost" follows in its spectral footsteps.

Wes has a secret ... a secret he knows he should share with Hudson. But Wes is stubborn, and at times a real idiot; but then again, Wes knows he's being stupid:
Who the fuck was I? I didn't want to be that person, the one who kept secrets from the people he loved the most, the ones who hurt his friends with his idiocy. But I didn't know how to stop. And if I told the truth ....
Something strange is going on at Aurora House, a LGBTQIA shelter for homeless teens where Lexi and Wes have volunteered. Some of the kids are reporting ghosts, and when Wes communicates with the resident ghosts he realizes something is hinky:
There was something subtly off about Aurora House and its barn. Not on the level of a demon, but something that made the hair on the back of my neck dance the mamba at regular intervals. An atmosphere that murmured of fear and uncertainty [...] It was like everything was waiting for something to happen. No - for the other shoe to drop.
I include the quote above because I love Jenn Burke's writing style. She really draws you in and keep you hanging on every word. I don't want to give a lot of details about the plot - partly because even trying to describe the twists and turns of the plot is just about impossible, but also because the way it all develops is so engrossing and consuming. Wes' secret fuels and influences a lot of the action but there is the deepening of Wes' relationship with Hudson, and we learn more about Michael, Wes' first love. 5 stars and a Recommended Read. FYI - the next book in this series - Graveyard Shift - is coming in November of 2019. Can.Not.Wait.

I really hate it when a person hides all these important things for their partner and then everything blows up in their face.

Entertaining, emotional and a notch better than book 1

Again, I won’t go into detail when it comes to the plot, I’m positive that it’s best enjoyed if you go in blindly. But I’ll spare a few words for the relationship development between Wes, the maybe-god-part-time-ghost, and Hudson, the reluctant vampire-sire.

I’m not a fan of miscommunication, but I kind of understand where it came from, and I loved that it made them both less than perfect - which is more than necessary, considering Wes is almost unstoppable with his newly acquired powers. I loved that it wasn’t all fun and games, and he had his struggles (and regrets) when dealing with everything.

What I loved most of all is the strong bond they built after talking it out, and after… well, you know the moment I’m talking about when you read it 🤐

Another thing I liked: their growing band of misfits 😬

And must of all, ofc: Greg B. His narration is a solid 10/5.

Why not 5 stars then? No idea, is just a gut feeling that the mystery plot l had a few minor holes that could have been solved better, especially as the general idea behind “the beyond” is really good 🤷‍♀️

All in all, still a rec, but keep in mind that you need to read book 1 first before you start this one!

Just as good as the second book! I couldn't stop listening.

The mystery was great, it took a front seat in this book and I was there for it. There was secrets, mystery and magic. So many story lines, getting together perfectly at the end. This time it was Wes I wanted to smack some sense into though, not Hudson.

I don't know what to say without spoiling it, and I sure like spoilers for myself but I don't want to do that to you guys. Just read this series.
I'll give you a warning though, if you are like me you might need tissues.

I loved this book! It was filled with humor, a wonderfully written mystery and lovable characters. After defeating the demon Hudson, Wes and Iskander open up their own PI agency. Evan seems to be getting the hang of being a vampire, Lexi is on board as well but not all is as it should be. The spell that Wes was a part of has changed him so profoundly that he barely controls his magic. He in his naive belief hides this new part of himself from others resulting in consequences of epic proportions. He angers his friends and puts in question his relationship with Hudson.

But what seems like a massive ghost haunting turns out to be an elaborate plan for revenge from the beyond. Carefully executed, it unleashes an angry creature that will not stop from destroying the city of Toronto and all those that wronged it in life. People get killed, property is destroyed, ghosts get trapped and angry, and this time Wes has no other choice but to act if he wants his loved ones to survive. I loved this elaborate mystery. It developed slowly, bit by bit giving me small clues as to what might be happening. Every piece of the puzzle fit neatly until the whole picture was complete.

The end was very interesting. I loved how author made me wonder about what happens next. Wes, I think, despite his belief that he never matured and stayed the same, has changed in many ways. Yes, he had his selfish moments and perhaps small temper tantrums but he was willing to give his all when his family was in danger. Because everybody in the agency have become one big family, and Wes finally have seen that he is not alone anymore, that he is surrounded by people who genuinely care for him. I loved how they helped each other, how they comforted each other, how affectionate they were, even how they bickered - all warmhearted and in good fun. This was a very good book that I thoroughly enjoyed, and highly recommend it! I can't wait to see what Hudson and his band are up to next time! Copy received for my honest and unbiased review

1.5 Liked this even less than the first one.
Willful miscommunication (aka lying) used as the main conflict.
The steam is still nowhere near where it would need to be to make up for that.
I have even more questions about the paranormal aspect than I did in the first book somehow.
Am I still going to finish this series? Yes, I am glutton for punishment.

Wow. Loved book 2 at least as much as book 1!
This is turning quickly into one of my most favourite paranormal series.

For a ‘not-ghost’, and a magical being, Wes is ultimately human on so many levels. He is quite the anti-hero, if I think about it. And I really really rooted for him (again).

Wes has got a secret, a huge one, something he should have shared with Hudson, his ex-cop, vampire boyfriend and his newly acquired family months and months ago.
But Wes’s legendary skill of avoiding unpleasant things and a deeply ingrained fear of rejection (Hudson leaving him before did quite a number on him) keep him from speaking up which leads to some pretty bad decisions.

Which of course blows right up in his face eventually. Tbh, I totally get where Wes is coming from. And considering that Hudson hasn’t been quite an open book himself isn’t helping at all.

So, there are some mega trust issues to be resolved, but that’s nowhere near where the real trouble starts! I couldn’t believe what Jenn Burkes boundless imagination throws at these guys. There is plot twist after plot twist, and I can safely say that I was kept breathless throughout the whole book.
There is no way you could ever anticipate what happens next.

The most touching part for me is undoubtedly Wes’s action about two thirds into the book. After telling us repeatedly what a selfish person he’s always been, he proves himself very, very wrong indeed.
He didn’t need to prove anything to me, btw. I could clearly see his kindness and caring side right from day one! What he does, really tore me apart.

My only minor complaint is that I would have loved to be in Hudson’s head just a little bit. Particularly in the latter stages of the plot.

After the tumultuous, dangerous happenings in this instalment I wonder what on earth Jenn Burke will have in store for Wes and Hudson in book 3!

Immensely looking forward to it!

WOW! My heart is just racing after finishing this story. Jenn Burke has created an amazing world with ghosts, vampires, mystery, hellhounds, magic, and love. Excellent storytelling, romance, and action!

This story continues on from the first book in this series - I don't really think you'd very easily be able to start with this one, so definitely start with Not Dead Yet. Prepare to fall in love with Wes and Hudson, I'm just saying.

I love, love, love, love Wes. I love that he's not perfect, and that he wants to do the right thing, but can also admit to totally being selfish and wanting to survive and make a life and future with Hudson. I love the representation that we get with his character, and I think maybe most of all along with that, I love that Hudson loves him unconditionally and loves Wes for who he is. I love their snark, I love their chemistry together, and I love that they are totally end game for each other and won't let things fall apart like they did the first time around.

I also really enjoy their band of friends - their family. Lexi, Evan, Isk, and some new friends they made in this story. I totally want Evan to find his own HEA, and I love that we touched on the realness of depression - hey, even vampires can battle depression. But yeah, I definitely want happiness for Evan, too.

It's hard to talk about the plot in this story without giving major spoilers away, so I'm not going to do this here. I will say that if you enjoyed the first book, you will love this one. If you haven't read this series, start with Not Dead Yet and prepare to fall in love with the storytelling and characters.

November and the 3rd book can't come soon enough!

Original review (08/2020):
Everything I said about Not Dead Yet can be said for Give Up the Ghost too. The only reason it took me a bit longer to read it is that I realized I'm not a big fan of lying (at least not about really big, important stuff) and the first part of the book is all about Wes doing just that (and being an idiot). But, all's well that ends well and that's all that mattered in the end. I'm so happy to have found this series! 4.5 stars

This one is the sequel to one of my favorite series thus far this year, Not Dead Yet and the first book in the series by the same title. I couldn't wait to see if Wes Cooper and Hudson Rojas could possibly live up to all the angst, action, surprises, and romance that this author delivered as she introduced this unique and fabulous Urban Fantasy world. The answer to that question is "oh yes, it certainly does!" If anything, this book elevated my love for this series another few notches. The events that occurred at the end of book #1 have had some profound aftereffects on Wes which, in turn, were the catalyst for every single thing that happens in this story. So, it is almost imperative that book #1 be read before this one. You know what the old saying is..."anything that can go wrong will go wrong"?? Well, our Wes is at the middle of it all. The author does an outstanding job of coming up with surprises and creative ways to make this world and its supernatural elements feel fresh and exciting, while keeping us on our proverbial toes throughout it all. The truth will always win out, and when it did, it was just as impactful as Wes feared it would be. If it was possible, it upped the angst factor that was already present in the story from the start by about 150%. At the heart of Wes and Hud’s relationship is their past. How they ended decades before, and the lack of any sort of real trust to speak of between them at this stage. This is their second time around and they are still a "work-in-progress". Events in this book bring them closer together in yet another beautifully done romantic turn. You can't help but love them both...each as individuals and together as a couple. I'm anxious to see what form Wes’s magic will take and the effects, if any, it will continue to have on everyone, especially their friends, Hud and Evan. Overall... it's a creative and engaging task of storytelling on Jenn Burke's part. She has helped the characters to have quickly earned a place in my long list of "must read favorites". This is paranormal fiction, with heartwarming moments and beautiful romantic turns at its best.

Audio Review 21Sep2020:

Wasn't a bit fan of Wes' hiding his magic from everyone, especially Hudson, and OMG that section where he mind-fucked Iskander's brother was all kinds of wrong - even if done for a seemingly good cause. And then thinking he'd do the same to Evan! Yeah, at that point I wasn't all that fond of Wes. I could understand his fear of telling his family, but I draw the line at deliberate manipulation. Then again, Hudson had some secrets of his own...not an excuse but blame to be had on both sides. Of course, despite how old they were and how much time they'd been together over the years, Wes & Hudson haven't REALLY been a solid couple for that long. There's still growing pains and that's one of the things I LOVE about sequels - relationship development, melding lives, and navigating the daily ups and downs.

Despite my frustration at the lack of communication and trust, the rest of the story was really engaging. I loved not knowing who the Big Bad was (since somehow I forgot? and was suspicious of Iskander for a short time what with his colluding with Hudson seeming to be a little nefarious) and the impact of magic misuse on both the real world and whatever exists on the other side.

Glad Wes got some closure with Michael as well. That whole section was irritating as well as heart-breaking. Damn, the past sure sucked, didn't it? (I refuse to believe there will be a return to that.)

Also, I guess I never got around to mentioning it in the previous review (seriously, that was all I said?) but that bit about gods and how they got their power was very reminiscent of the Ori in SG1 and I loved it. I'm not religious at all but just as I believe that words have power and speaking them into existence gives them life, I also think that there's some merit to the idea that people/beings also derive power from those that follow them...just look at social media and that whole "influencer" trend.

Oh, and Greg nails the narration. Then again, when does he NOT?

Can't wait to get to the next one.

4.5 stars! Just as damn good as I was told! <3 I complained in an update that I really like Wes but he makes me tired. And he does! But I feel like Wes learned a lot in this book, and he gets that in a relationship it has to be all in or it doesn't work. And that doesn't mean just his romantic relationship. To be fair though, Hudson was keeping his own secrets too but I don't feel like this will be a problem going forward. I'm sure there will be others, LOL.

I love Wes and Hudson together, and I love who they are becoming, together. I love how patient Hudson is with Wes and I really like it that Wes feels safe enough with Hudson to be himself, even if it scares him.

I absolutely enjoy the world and the family that the author has created here. Jenn Burke knows how to keep me interested in seeing where it all goes from here. I look forward to it!

Thanks again to Elfie McElferson for the amazing read, I really loved it. <3

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Give Up the Ghost is the second book in Jenn Burke’s fabulous Not Dead Yet series. The story picks up in the aftermath of the events of the last book, and Hudson and Wes carry over as main characters, so being familiar with the series will definitely enhance your experience here. However, the basics of the world building and past events are explained here if you want to jump right in.

This story builds nicely on the first book, showing clearly the bond that has grown among the team, as well as the commitment Hudson and Wes have to moving forward with a relationship together. The early parts are a little rocky as Wes is keeping a huge secret from everyone, and each time he even considers spilling, things get in the way. I’ll admit, the big secret isn’t my favorite trope, but fortunately Burke doesn’t let it linger too long, and while Wes does have to deal with the fall out form withholding the information, the story moves forward nicely. I am enjoying seeing the relationship between the two men grow, particularly since they are trying again after each was too focused on other priorities to give their relationship a real chance the first time around. It is clear they are committed to one another and that their connection is growing over the course of the book. I also like the found family aspect here and watching them work together with Iskander, Lexi, and Evan and seeing how important they all are to one another.

Audiobook review

I have a confession to make.... I'm seriously addicted to this series and these people. I’ve basically been growling and grumbling at everyone and everything that kept me from this book today. I was that invested.

If for some reason you haven’t read the first book Not Dead Yet you need to go back and do that before starting in on this one. Much of it builds heavily on what happened before and let’s face it, you don’t want to miss out on a terrific book.

I loved the characters of this series and their different relationships. They feel genuine and all of them seem multifaceted and well rounded. All of them have their story, their voices adds flavour and meaning to the story. They are allowed to feel, to react and to, for a lack of a better word, be human. Usually in books only the main characters (and sometimes not even that) have backstories and depth, but here that’s true for all of them. You feel for all the characters and everything going on in their lives.

Everything that happens in this book has a meaning, it brings the story forward, gives you a clue. Some more obvious than others, but that doesn’t detract from the interesting world Burke has created. It hooks you right in and Boudreaux makes you feel like you live in it with Wes, Hudson et. al.

Greg Boudreaux is a master voice actor. He nails every emotion and character in this book; whether it’s Wes’ sarcasm or fear of someone finding out his secret, Iskander’s broken voice or Hudson’s love for Wes. It’s always spot on and just right for the moment. His wide range of voices makes it easy to distinguish between the different characters and adds another layer to the listening experience. I only have one complaint; I miss his impersonation of a high vampire that we got in the previous book, that was truly hilarious. But since there were none in this book to be had, I guess he couldn’t just go rouge and add it in just to make me smile. But a girl could dream right? 

I’ve had such a wonderful time living in this world, and these characters. But you know what the really sad part is? There are no more books published in this series, so from now on it's a waiting game to see what happens next in the lives of Wes, Hudson, Lexi, Evan and the others. I have a suspicious feeling that things are bound to get even more interesting – as if they weren’t already.

To quote my review of the first book, Not Dead Yet, “There was a lot of story and it kept me completely entertained. I was on the edge of my seat, I was laughing, I was sad, I was excited and most of all, I was intrigued.”

I feel the same exact way about this book. This was fantastic.

Following right after Not Dead Yet, you’d like to think this one would have started out calm. Wes and Hudson living and loving, the rest of the gang riding that joy but noooooooo. This started out the opposite of calm, DRAMA!

The beginning was killer. My God Wes. You make me crazy! You make me want to wrap you up and hug the shit out of you! I just had such a feeling of dread at the start and I was not wrong to feel that way. Ugh, the angst, haha!

I just don’t know how to describe how good these stories are. There is so much going on with everyone and it all has substance but it is never overwhelming or too much. Whether is it dealing with the past, depression, PTSD, injury or trust issues, all of it is interesting and each character has a place and matters, they aren’t just extras, they are pivotal to the story. I just love this family. They all have something they are going through and they are so lucky to have each other to help. You truly can feel the love.

So, this went to a whole other paranormal level and it was awesome. No spoilers here. Just know that this amps of the magic and the evil and man, it was good.

The end of this book though. The end just took the entire read to another level. I knew for sure that this was not nearly, to me, as good as the first one but all that went down at the end, well, when I think about the wrap up to this one it just might be.

No second-book slump here!

Give me more! I can’t wait for the next one.

If you like this kind of thing, do yourself a favor and go grab the first book, you will not be disappointed. And if you don’t, you will be.

A disappointment in comparison to Not Dead Yet, which I loved. It took me at least two weeks to finish. The “godhood” aspect of the story was very weak and didn’t work for me. I simply didn’t find much to like about the book. Hoping the next one will be on par with #1.

I'm honestly blown away by the depth of this story and the emotions it brought out of me. I was irritated with Wes, annoyed with Hudson, infuriated with that stupid professor, a sobbing mess at one point and consumed by the love of their little family at the end. And I loved every single minute of it.

I've given this an A- at AAR, so that's 4.5 stars rounded up.

Jenn Burke’s Not Dead Yet earned a place on my keeper shelf earlier this year for many reasons, not least of which were the great storytelling, excellent worldbuilding, memorable characters, snappy dialogue and unusual premise.  Wes Cooper was murdered in 1933 by his lover Michael, but was resurrected by Michael’s sister – a witch.  Somehow, she overdid it, not only bringing Wes back to life, but making him immortal, which changed his life in many ways apart from the obvious one.  He’s made a living as a ‘retrieval specialist’, using his ability to slip between the living plane and the otherplane (which exists between the living and the dead), to sneak in and out of places others cannot access in order to recover items for interested parties.  Witnessing a murder while in the otherplane was the kicking off point for Not Dead Yet, which saw Wes reconnect with the love of his life, detective Hudson Rojas, and then work with him to solve the murder, making some truly disturbing discoveries along the way.  As Wes and his rag-taggle band of friends and allies fought together to prevent a powerful demon taking corporeal form, something even weirder than usual happened to him, and at the end of the story he realised that his (mostly low-level) magical powers had somehow been increased to a massive degree – and he’s not entirely sure if he’s strong enough to control them.

Give Up the Ghost opens some months after those events, and Wes still hasn’t told Hudson or his best friend, Lexi, what happened to him.  It’s not that he’s deliberately holding out on them, it’s just that, what with one thing and another – Hudson’s retirement from the Toronto PD, setting up their new PI agency, settling into being a couple again, Lexi needing to rest following the clean-up after their battle with the demon, and helping their friend, Evan, to come to terms with his part in it – basically, there just hasn’t been a good time.  And now, months later, it feels too weird to bring it up.  Plus, Wes is a master at avoidance and decides he’s better off not knowing exactly what the Crown of Osiris did to him, because that way he can hide from it.  But he’s struggling; not only to keep the secret, but to keep his powers under control and his fears at bay – and it’s taking its toll on him.

A bunch of “weird shit” happening at their local coffee shop is the first clue that something is badly wrong.  Wes, Lexi and Evan arrive to discover the place overrun by imps, who must be coming through some sort of crack or portal into the living plane – but from where?  Imps don’t exist in the otherplane, so they must be coming from Beyond, the place where spirits pass after death and where demons live – but in order to do that, the imps must have been summoned.  But by whom – and why?  Before Wes can contemplate that, however, he and the others must seal the breach – and not for the first time, he berates himself for not coming clean about his enhanced magic, as he instead of doing it himself, he has to channel some of his magic into Lexi so that she can close it.

Wes wants to find out what happened – after all, they’re investigators now, right? – but Hudson insists they’re not the paranormal police and wants to leave it alone.  Things between Wes and Hudson have been a bit on edge for a while; Hudson wants them to move in together (again) but Wes keeps turning him down, scared that Hudson will find out the truth about his magic and everything will change between them.  Even though he’s well aware that his own experience now strongly parallels what happened to Hudson when he was turned (into a vampire), Wes still can’t bring himself to reach out. He’s terrified that Hudson will look at him differently and that their relationship will fall apart. Again.

When Lexi receives a phone call from Kee, a friend who runs a shelter for homeless LGBTQIA teens, telling her that some of the kids there report having seen ghosts, she and Wes head over to Aurora House to see what’s going on. Kee tells them about a mirror that spontaneously shattered, a resident who watched scratches appear on his arm, one who felt someone nudge him as he walked down the stairs… and Wes is immediately on the alert.  It’s not unusual for ghosts to want to communicate with the living, but for them to persist when it’s clear that none of the living around them are sensitive enough to be able to do it?  That bothers him.  He’s bothered even more by the fact he can see ghosts in his normal, human state, which isn’t something he’s ordinarily able to do.

The portal in the coffee shop, ghosts haunting places they’d never been when alive and trying to communicate in the living plane – and then, the appearance of Michael, who is clearly trying to warn Wes about something; all these things point to some sort of movement or tear in the fabric of the boundaries that exist between the different planes.  And the more Wes, Hudson and their friends discover, the clearer it becomes that it’s imperative the breach is sealed once and for all… and that there’s only one way to do that. And only one person who can do it.  But at what cost?

Give Up the Ghost is a terrific sequel to Not Dead Yet, full of all the ingredients that made that first book such a great read.  The storyline is compelling, suspenseful and heartbreaking – I choked up near the end! – the characters are well-defined and complex, with flaws that make them seem that much more real, and the relationships between them are brilliantly drawn.  Wes and Hudson are going through the sorts of teething troubles experienced by many couples, none of which is helped by the fact they’re both keeping secrets; but though things sometimes seem rocky, they’re both committed to making things work between them this time around.  They’re great characters – individually and together – and I continue to enjoy Wes’ very distinctive voice and the way he’s still growing as a character and working to break out of his long-ingrained habit of self-interest. Even though he can sometimes be frustrating, his awareness of his flaws is truly appealing, as is his fierce desire to protect those he loves, Hudson and his ‘found family’.

Give Up the Ghost is a fantastic blend of romance, humour, chills and suspense and is, fortunately, one of those rare sequels that’s as good as the first in the series. Both books are going to be sitting right next to each other on my keeper shelf, and I’m eagerly awaiting Graveyard Shift, which is set for release later this year.

Like 2.25? The mystery element was interesting but the character and relationship arcs were awful.
MC Wes is so full of magic he accidentally mind wipes his friend’s homophobic brother in law. And then tries to intentionally mind wipe another friend who knows he’s extra magic now, which is a wild ass violation.
Everyone is mad for like a week and then like “Communication is important. I’m disappointed in you for trying to fry your friend’s brain” and they are fine.

Then they have a big circle talking about how much they believe in him at the end.

This review is also posted on my blog.

I love a good paranormal story. I was intrigued by the first book in this series, but it did kind of lose me at the end, and I never really felt a connection to the characters throughout that book. I liked them, but it was just an okay read for me.

However.

This book? Give Up the Ghost? This book is ALL THE FEELS. This was was super angsty and had so much anxiety and internal conflict and I LOVED IT.

This characters in this book had a time to actually shine. There's certainly still a lot happening in the plot, but it also backs off a just a little bit to give us a chance to really know Wes and Hudson. Because Wes may be old, but in all that time, he's never had to grow up. He's been living, but only inside the cocoon of what he's comfortable with and never quite stepping outside of that. Hudson, on the other hand? Hudson is an unpredictable variable in all of that.

They've been together once before, and that didn't work out in the end. Wes might love Hudson but the possibility that Hudson might walk away from their relationship again is something that Wes fears deeply.

At the end of Not Dead Yet, Wes gained something unexpected. He has magic and it used to be a manageable amount, but now he has magic that no longer fits into the mental container he used to store it all in. It's draining Wes to keep it all contained and he's rightly freaking out about it. The problem is, he hasn't told anyone about his newfound power because he's scared that'll be the breaking point between him and Hudson, and he likes what they have now. Wes is a ball of anxiety, and while it is frustrating to read that he's choosing to handle everything alone, I get it. Hudson is the first person in a very long time that Wes really feels a connection with and just really loves. And he doesn't want to ruin that because he had been a breaking point with Hudson before.

It also doesn't help that Hudson is keeping secrets of his own. Hudson, Wes, and Iskander, a PI, have started an investigation business and while they've been staying with non-paranormal cases, it was inevitable that things get spooky and involves them anyways.

When ghosts start doing mysterious things and act much more abnormally than Wes is used to, of COURSE Wes wants to get involved. This is where the story starts getting spooky and felt so very intense and stressful. I mean, I suspected before now, but now I know - stories with ghosts doing scary stuff just freaks me out. Especially when I tend to read books in the dead of night. This story definitely dialed up the creepy factor in my opinion. I love it. I probably would have liked it more if I read this in the middle of the day instead.

The story does get a bit weird near the end. It was brutal and a plot twist I certainly didn't see coming, but it also felt a tad bit too convoluted again. I guess I just like my mysteries to be more straightforward? And this wasn't it.

It was lovely meeting some new characters. I particularly liked that we meet a genderfluid character named Kee, who owns a LGBTQIA shelter for homeless teens. They were not as distressed about finding out about all the weird paranormal activity within their home as I would have been.

I loved seeing Lexi again, Wes's witch best friend. And of course, it was a delight seeing Evan again (the vampire who got turned in the first book). Evan is so precious and I hope he can find his own HEA someday.

Something I really love about this series is CONSENT. Hudson always asks and respects whatever Wes tells him. Wes is ace (maybe gray ace?), and although that's never explicitly said on the page, it is highly implied. And sometimes, Wes doesn't want to have sex and just wants to cuddle with Hudson and Hudson doesn't even question it. I LOVE IT. This whole scene made me cry:

But even though I desired Hudson and most of the time, just looking at him was enough to get my engine revving, sometimes my body wasn't on board with the sex stuff. Sometimes it wanted cuddles and closeness rather than passion and orgasms. And the best thing? The absolutely amazing best thing?

Hudson accepted that without question. He always had.

The events in this book seem to wrap up things pretty well? So I am very surprised to learn we're getting a third book coming later this year, and I can't wait to see what happens because I have come to love the characters a LOT and wish them only the best.

3.75 stars rounded up

This is the beginning of a review where I will say once again - since apparently, it's my common problem - that I remember nothing from the first book *sheepish smile*. However, I will also say this happily, that I got myself immersed to the story without feeling too lost in the plot.

So, a short recap, after handling Crown of Osiris (in the previous book) apparently Wes Cooper's magic power is getting bigger. And it's NOT without its own consequences. While trying to deal with this new fact, malicious supernatural creatures start to appear in Toronto, not to mention that ghosts are acting weirdly as well. Wes, his vampire-lover Hudson, and their merry band of Evan, Lexi, and Iskander, must figure things out, before the havoc becomes uncontrollable.

On the paranormal part, I really loved it. I loved the sinister plot that happened with ghosts stealing items and becoming dangerous. I liked that these people put their thinking hats together, and trying to make connection of what had been going on. I also loved the introduction of new characters -- Ren Oshiro, Ben, Joelle -- which means the 'universe' is getting bigger.

Now, on the relationship part ... I have to admit, some of the "men-don't-talk" parts of this book frustrated me. Wes keeps secret (of his magic) from Hudson. Hudson doesn't share about his "errands" to Wes. Evan keeps the identity of his date from everyone. AARGH!! When you talk and you WORK together, it gives RESULT, people!! But, at least I think Wes and Hudson really learn about communication by the end of this book. Hudson also tries to be a better sire to Evan. Improvement *thumbs up*

I think Lexi is the MVP in this book, though. Despite being SPOILER! injured SPOILER! Lexi still able to help the gang, and she plays quite a big role near the end with Wes' situation. So YAY LEXI!

To close this review, I need to say something about Wes' sexuality though. The book highlights side-characters who are bisexuals and genderfluids. But Wes' sexuality, which I assume to be demi-sexual based on his stance on sex, is never stated clearly. Wes said, I didn’t often feel sexual attraction. Objectively, I could evaluate a man’s appearance as handsome, rugged, beautiful— but it was an aesthetic appreciation, not an “I want to jump his bones” kind of one

As an asexual reader, who always celebrates when there's asexual characters in book I read, I can't help feeling let down by the author's decision not to even write the word "asexual" or "demi-sexual" on page.

Audio review

A nice continuation of the series. I will say I found Wes kinda immature and bratty. It wasn't all the time, but when it appeared I have the story the stink eye.

The story synopsis is hard to explain. You get a lot from the blurb. Wes is trying to figure out why ghosts are congregating at a house and also who attacked his friend. The reason behind the ghosts is weird!!! Like, what? Unhinged much?

Then Wes and his Godness. Fun and hilarious, sure. And also crazy! How did that happen? The story tells you but I didn't follow it, lol.

I do recommend this as a whole and the audio itself was awesome! Superb narration.

3.5 for the story 5 for narration.

My review of the book is HERE, so I won't rehash it, I'll just say that the audio version is terrific and Greg Boudreaux completely nails it - once again.

I had quite liked the first book by Jenn Burke, „Not Dead Yet”. But while I loved the characters and setting, I wasn’t that impressed by the plot. Sadly, the second volume has more of the latter and less of the former.
I mean, of course it still has its characters and its setting. But it once again focuses on Wes and Hudson, and we only get short glimpses at the other characters, whose stories remain unresolved (which as such is fine in a series, but the way it’s done felt unsatisfying rather than promising, if that makes sense). I also had difficulty caring about Wes and Hudson’s issues, and it didn’t help that Wes Is Keeping A Big Secret From Everyone Because Reasons. I’m not a fan of that kind of thing - it’s rarely done in a way that feels believable to me, and it just made me dislike Wes, which didn’t help with my enjoyment of the rest of the story.
The plot mostly just seemed to drag on and failed to grip me. The villain and their motivation actually pissed me off (hellllo misogyny), and I found the final fight very anticlimactic as well. The only part of the book I found truly interesting apart from the bits where we find out stuff about Iskander and Evan were the last 10%, and even they seemed to last forever.
I had been looking forward to this sequel, but unfortunately it didn’t live up to its predecessor. I doubt I’d be interested in reading another book about Wes and Hudson - if volume three focuses on either Iskander or Evan, I might give it a try, otherwise I doubt I’ll continue this series.

My ARC copy of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

Reread 04/2023 review- 4.15~4.2 stars??

Reread 11/2021 review- 4.25 stars?🤷🏻‍♀️

Original 12/2020 review- 4.3 stars? Although I didn’t like this as much as the 1st, I still enjoyed it (especially all the angst 😍😁).

Oh! Also, I love me some Ace/Demi representation!!!!!!!! ♠️💜 And that scene between Hud & Wes, where Hud was completely fine with the fact that ーdespite what they were doingーWes wasn’t in the mood/feeling it (& that was totally fine... & stopping was no big deal) 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥰

Give Up the Ghost is exactly as angsty and high-stakes as the title suggests, and it's GREAT!

Content warnings include: violence and gore, death, blood drinking (in sexual and non-sexual contexts), sex on-page, character gets heavily injured and spends time in a coma and on the ICU, depression; mentions of suicide.

Especially the beginning of the book is brimming with angst. Following the aftermath of book 1, Not Dead Yet, Wes has changed, but his fear of the changes and what they might mean keep him from telling his friends. Meanwhile Hudson is keeping his own secrets, and their partners at the private investigation firm they founded, Iskander and Evan, have their own stuff going on.

There's tension as the plot gets rolling, with nobody really knowing what is going on while the secrets grow heavier and heavier and everything goes wrong.
It took them a bit longer than I would have liked to piece all the connections together, but when the plot picked up it was so gooooood.

The finale was not what I expected, with surprising turns and a completely different tone than anticipated, but I loved it for it's unconventionality and super emotional ending that totally made me cry.

I loved the characters. Wes's voice is hilarious, and Hudson is great, and I still adore Iskander, Evan and Lexi, all of whom got more background exploration in this book. There are also a few new characters that I hope will appear again!
The found family theme was very much in the foreground, and I loved it!
However, the book also left me itching to know more, especially regarding the side characters. Some things were mentioned and then never brought up again, which I hope means that those threads will be picked up in the next book.

Like in book 1, Wes's asexuality was handled amazingly. It was casually implemented and I loved how it translated into his and Hudson's sexual relationship.

There was one extremely weird moment where Wes finds out a male character who volunteered at a queer shelter has a girlfriend, and for some reason questions his motivation for volunteering there, to which the character exasperatedly replies that bisexuality is a thing. Wes's thoughts about that or why he asked that aren't described and it's never brought up again, but I found the question itself super weird. I do not think it's meant as him being hostile towards bi people (in an earlier scene he defends another bi character's sexuality) but it was..... yeah, weird. Maybe it was meant as a way to establish that the character is bi, but if so, it was done in a very unfortunate way.

Another really weird thing was

A wonderful sequel, and I can't wait for the next book of the series!

While the plot of Give Up the Ghost is closed in itself, I do recommend reading it in order after Not Dead Yet and not as a standalone.

I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I absolutely love Not Dead Yet and was excited to start on book 2. Wes and Hudson is now a couple, but still not very steady. Both of them keeping secrets from each other really frustrate me for half the book. There was no lack of sexy times, but I wish they will start trusting each other more.

Hudson, Wes and the gang came up with a new PI firm and there are some argument between them regarding the cases. There are a few paranormal cases that they took up and initially I felt overwhelmed, but of course we found out that it was all linked!

Wes is getting more powerful from the aftermath in Book 1. I actually not sure how I feel about his new status with this almighty power and it didn't help that Wes keep angst-ing over his predicament. Despite Hudson being a vamp himself, I felt that Hudson didn't really have any opportunity to shine. It seems that in all the crucial moments, everyone is dependant on Wes. I hope to see more of a balance partnership in future books or just let Hudson be the badass vamp that he is meant to be. As for Wes and Hudson's relationship, I'm glad to see they are finally moving forward to the next stage and trusting each other.
