An Atypical Love

Rate this book
Rohan can’t quite decide if letting his friend Conner play matchmaker is the smartest thing he’s ever done or the stupidest. As an asexual Dom who’s never quite found Mr. Right, after a string of misses, even he’s starting to admit it might be time to let the crazy owner of Bound & Controlled steer the show.

Dayton knows he shouldn’t trust Conner when he has that look on his face, but when the wicked sub promises him Mr. Right, common sense goes right out the window. But with most Doms at the club being too scared of hurting him to let him submit, he’s crossing his fingers and hoping that love and domination are finally in the air.

Sometimes finding Mr. Right is easy and sometimes he’s wrapped in an unconventional package…but love will always find a way.

Author’s Dayton has some physical limitations that impact the type of play he can participate in but there is no trauma in his background. This is a standalone novel that starts at the Bound & Controlled club, and some fun past characters make an appearance in the story (The Accidental Master series/M.A. Innes). You do not need to have read any other stories to enjoy this one.

If you saw my last review of this author, you know that my experience from her last book was awful. This book is getting three starts. The first 35-40% of the book felt like old Shaw. The two MCs were meshing well and the writing was very reminiscent of what we've gotten from the past.....then we hit 55-60% and things went down hill.

First, let it be known, that I have zero physical proof that this author is or isn't using AI or a ghost writer. Other than a gut feeling based on reading her books hundreds of times, there's zero evidence, but there is pattern that's developed.

The first clue is the repetition of words. I don't mean using a word once or twice, I mean a word being used over 20-30 and sometimes up to 350 times. In this story, I noticed the word cuddle was being used in almost every interaction between the two main characters. Again, a pattern that did not start until this year with the Beautiful Shame book. Another phrase used over and over again in this book is "good boy." Good boy was used 50 times. After it being used over 120 times in her last book, one would think that she'd take a minute to edit or have an editor read specifically for the over use of that term.

The second clue is the departure from well thought out plots and character interactions. This book felt like one scene repeated over and over again. Nothing varied much. Dayton spent most of the book in subspace and other than a dinner out, most of their interactions were scenes. This is the second book with Conner playing matchmaker that begins with a scene and seems to continue from one to another.

The last clue, for me, is the number of books this author has published in 2023. We have 6 published titles along with the many she has said are WIP. I'm not sure how it's humanly possible to write so many books in a 6 months period. Hence, why several of them read as if written by someone or something else. Don't forget the new Patreon that's been started with Patreon only releases. I'm not sure why there's been this push to publish more than necessary for 2023. Not sure if it's the influence of her PA or maybe she needs the boost in income, but her writing is suffering.

I'd also like to touch on Patreon for a second. Seeing the names of people who became her Patreons felt gross. Yes, I know that an author made it seem like everyone will earn $15,000-$20,000 a month using Patreon and that's why there's been an influx of authors going that route. However, it's a slap in the face to the people who have been reading and supporting her books for the past few years. In today's economy, there's not many who can afford to pay $25 every month to support an author in exchange for their name to be featured in a book. It's gross and any author participating in something similar should rethink that plan.

I had such high hopes for this book and even messaged a friend letting her know that it seemed promising...and then it collapsed. It's repetitive. Melissa was a huge bully. The interactions with Jackson, Cooper and Sawyer was one of the best parts of the book. Don't even get me started on that ending. Oy vey

TLDR Read at your own risk.

An Atypical Love by Shaw Montgomery is about Dayton and Rohan. These two just fit together. Their story was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written. I loved it!

I absolutely loved this story. Dayton and Rohan both have problems finding someone that fits. I loved seeing Connor helping both of them out by introducing them to each other. It was so fun getting to see previous characters and learning all about these two. I really hope that we get to see more of them because I was not ready for the story to end. This was such a wonderful story.

another DNF

What is it with this author *clears throat* this “new author” and their bumbling idiotic MC’s? I was pumped about the plot and there was one part, the first scene b/w Rohan and Dayton, that I was like there they are, finally a part written by the Shaw Montgomery/MA Innes I loved to read. But the first part where they first meet and were talking about limits, uh…no one talks like that! So formal and robotic. While the rest is a confusing, bumbling mess that even Dayton confuses himself with what he’s thinking and trying to say, if he can’t follow his own thoughts and Rohan is just as confused, how the hell are readers suppose to follow that mess!

For me there are a lot of ups and downs about this book. I LOVED (LOVED) the pairing of an asexual Daddy (not opposed to PLEASING his boy) with a boy who has physical limitations. It still managed to be really quite spicy while highlighting how in the spectrum of sexuality, wherever you fit is okay, and not hopeless. Dayton and Rohan certainly feel the effects of being being outside what is typically expected in Daddy/Boy relationships, but they end up being perfect for each other. I think Montgomery was pretty true to her characters - so for me these two do stand out in the catalogue despite the frequency of the certain phrases that include the words “wonderful”, “insane”, and “crazy” which are the catalyst for blending a lot of the MCs together in my mind. The biggest down side for me was that the book seemed to end fairly abruptly (almost like it was a part one or at at least needed another chapter). It’s an HEA but there’s an underlying subplot with Dayton’s parents that on one hand is addressed but on the other hand is not resolved. The biggest up side for me was getting to see Sawyer and Cooper and Jackson again, and in this context. Cooper and Dayton are the bees knees. Overall, 3.5 stars.

Loved it! Dayton is hilarious when he's tired, although he's thankfully not nearly as chaotic as Cooper (or Connor or Kevin or Eli or Skyler or Austin) in general, and Rohan is absolutely lovely in the most Dom-ish way. They fit each other to a T -- I love how perfectly their limits dovetail. Their scenes are hot as fire while still as soft as silk and I adore the aftercare Rohan lavishes on Dayton -- cuddles ftw! It was also wonderful to have so much interaction with Jackson, Cooper, and Sawyer -- I was expecting Conner and Melissa both at the start of the story, but I've missed that lovely trio, so their chapters were a nice bonus.

OK this was a better book than the previous book about alternative ways of being n a relationship. Though this book had great asexual representation I think we were shortchanged on the relationship aspect outside of scenes that the MC's were in. I felt the story was left a little unfinished what with Dayton not resolving any issues with his parents and in a smaller way not meeting Melissa (Rohan's best friend). I was not a fan of Melissa in terms of her being very pushy and it felt like even though she kept saying she was worried for Rohan, she kept expecting for there to be something wrong with Dayton even when Rohan kept reiterating that their interactions went well. I don't know. I think the plot was a bit disjointed, just like this review.

I am scoring this this high only because of good asexual rep in terms of showcasing that there isn't just one way to be with someone or even asexual.

DNF @ 57% The setup of this book was interesting and I liked the ace rep, but the book was so slow-paced with repetitive bdsm scenes and minimal substance, even halfway through the book barely anything had happened.

Perfect atypical story

I'm always a one click for Shaw Montgomery/MA Innes books. Mainly because I love her characters, the storyline and low angst books.
This one is a great example of that. I also love that this book is atypical. It's great to read a story about someone who is asexual and the guy that is perfect for him.

Rohan is an asexual Dom and as he has never found his Mr Right so he finally lets Connor the part-owner of Bound & Controlled set him up. Dayton knows he shouldn't trust Connor when he has that look on his face but when the wicked sub promises him his Mr Right common sense flies right out of the window. In the past most Doms at the club are too scared about hurting him to let him submit after a childhood illness gave him massive skin sensitivity so he is crossing his finger that finally love and domination are finally in his future. Sometimes finding Mr. Right is easy and sometimes he’s wrapped in an unconventional package…but love will always find a way.

I loved these two men. Rohan was suitably detail-driven and knowledgeable that he was able to scene with Dayton safely and his asexuality actually was an advantage in this instance. Dayton was just adorable with this inability to think or speak when Rohan was toying with him and how frequently that happened. I loved that Rohan has focussed on Dayton's comfort, pleasure and safety and the ends to which he was prepared to go to. I felt so invested in these two that I just wanted to have a hug with them. Easy to read, feel and understand it was easy to just carry on and not put this book down - after all sleep can be caught up with. This is an MM book with BDSM-like D/s behaviours and some sexual content.

This was amazing. Fans new and old y’all are going to love this. Rohan and Dayton have had a hard time in their dating history before they met. But here Conner has earned the matchmaker crown. High praise to the author here. With Rohan being asexual and Dayton’s health issues finding someone who fits isn’t easy. I love how we got their dating history. Seeing Melissa in all her glory was awesome. Seriously, if she ever did a book signing imaging how many characters would show up. I’m curious about the shop owner they went to. Makes me think of Derek. I do hope we see more of these guys. I want to say thank you to the author for these too. Because knowing and truly understanding are two different things. I think this will close that gap for some. This is one of the many reasons Shaw Montgomery is and has been for years my favorite author and my number one re-read.

Very interesting characters

This book is just as it is titled about a very different type of love story. There are a few scenes where there are other people there, but most of the book is just the two main characters Rohan and Dayton and how they learn about each other enough to make their relationship work. I appreciate when authors go to the lengths that Shaw Montgomery does in this book to present realistic different types of characters. If I had to boil it down I’d say it was soft bdsm that relies more on psychological Doming than physical.

Love it when Conner plays matchmaking.
Rohan is an asexual Dom, who has been looking for the right sub, but none seem to understand him.
Dayton is a sub who has nerve problems so is unable to do impact play. No Dom understands his problem.
When Conner matches them together they both click straight away. With Dayton needing the care and support and Rohan having someone to care for.
Loved it when Rohan introduced Dayton to Cooper and Sawyer.

Love, Love this book and the characters. It was nice to see Conner briefly, but Rohan and Dayton were interesting characters who each have unusual limitations on what they are willing to do. Both have had some pretty awful dates, so neither is 100% sure they should allow Conner to set them up, but once they meet, they just click.

It's fun watching them learn that the other is the perfect person for them.

Both Rohan and Dayton have had a hard time finding the perfect fit for them. Both have preferences that are not being met. So when a little matchmaking is offered, they have nothing to loose.
What they get is a perfect fit in each other.

This was a read that keeps you engaged with characters as the author spins a tale that is unique to these characters and their needs. An asexual Dom and a sub that has limitations due to his health who end up balancing each other splendidly.
With the addition of some previous characters and some not so savoury characters, this was a definitely an enjoyable read.

The business!

An unconventional love story of an Asexual Dom & a Sub who cannot handle pain of any sort. To accidentally knocking a kitchen corner, to being in a Club which allowed too many patrons and then some people falling over which caused havoc in the crowd.
Once they discuss all what they want out of a relationship, everything falls into place with loads of help from the Dom. I just love Shaw style of writing.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed Rohan and Dayton’s story. It’s sweet, low angst, moderately kinky, and it was fun catching up with old friends from the Bound & Controlled universe.
I was sorry for the book to end as I was interested to see how Dayton resolved his work and family situation, but am hopeful we’ll catch up with them in another B&C themed book

Atypical Love

I was intrigued by the blurb so I read this and loved it. It was unique. My first book I read with an asexual Dom. I love that it shows there is someone out there for everyone. Not everyone has the same relationship wants and needs.

Delightfully Out of the Ordinary

Atypical is a light D/s story of two men discovering shared sensory play and power exchange that fits just right. I was glad another book from Shaw Montgomery. Revisiting Cooper and Sawyer was lovely.

Different main characters than the norm

I absolutely loved these two characters and their interactions with each other. I also would have loved to see the results once the parents came back.

Rating 3.5. I love the dynamic between the two main characters but I think would have love a complete resolution to the issue introduced in the last two chapters.

Conner does it again! I love this little matchmaker and how he intuitively knows that two people will fit. In this story, we meet Rohan and Dayton. Rohan is an asexual Dom who is struggling to find someone who understands his boundaries. Dayton is a sub who cannot engage in impact play due to medical conditions.

I love how these two met. Their relationship developed organically as they learned boundaries and became comfortable with each other. It made me laugh when Dayton told Rohan he was a drama magnet. Very true! I love how Rohan was able to indulge his caretaking side with Dayton, and how Dayton was so concerned with making sure that Rohan’s needs were met too. The kissing and cuddling were cute.

As much as I loved the couple, I was missing a few scenes. Dayton never met Melissa though she was a big part of Rohan’s life. They never confronted Dayton’s parents or met his grandparents. Dayton’s living arrangements were never finalized and we didn’t get a scene of them in the future. There wasn’t a public scene either even though it had been discussed after meeting Cooper, Sawyer, and Jackson. I was left hanging in a lot of ways.

I would love to see these two in the future though!

I received an ARC for my honest review

This sexy BDSM story is also a really sweet romance. Rohan is an asexual dom, and Dayton is a sub with nerve issues that cause his pain tolerance to be extremely low. Each of them wants a relationship, but their differences from the "norm" have made finding that really hard. Thank goodness for nosy matchmaker Conner, who always seems to know best. (I really hope he got his flowers!)
I like the teasing banter between Rohan and Dayton, and I love seeing them finally meet up with Jackson, Sawyer, and Cooper. What a terrific friendship this will certainly be, and I hope to see more of it in the future.
I like the atypical-ness here. The usual elements of a BDSM story are mostly missing, but these men fit together perfectly. I would be happy to see more of their relationship as they continue to grow together, but I am still happy with the HFN ending provided. This is a fun story!

Another one of those books I loved reading so much that I got disappointed that there wasn't more. I wanted MORE!

This felt more like Act One of a proper romance than a full romance novel. I absolutely loved these characters, how they started, how they negotiated their kink and relationship, but I'm absolutely disappointed by what short shrift this couple got for their plot journey.

I love Shaw Montgomery, she writes about different kinds of love, here for me, was more important how Rohan and Dayton reconcile what makes them unique with a booming relationship.
I finished this book wanting more of these two. The playing they had was really engaging to me, how they think about each other and themselves... Well it felt very realistic. To me this was a well rounded story with wonderful MC, a well stablished world, well written and with an ending very firmly in how relationships works in real life.
Also, with Shaw you always have a chance to see some of her other characters, and they were some of my favorites, so it was a win win for me.
Don`t miss this!

Ummm it just ended

This for me was an ok read right til the end ..it just ended so abruptly and I had unanswered questions and it feels like maybe there is meant to be more ? Maybe another book but nothing i could find said this was part of a series

And it seems very similar to her last book...and wow cuddle was used a heck of a lot. I get it made up a a huge part of Rohan and Daytons relationship but wow there are other words for cuddle lol

Anyway my rambling thoughts are this isnt as good as other Shaw / MA writing ...and similar to the last book of theirs I read with a Connor setup ..new ideas needed it seems.

I gave this book three stars based mostly on potential. It started off strong, but then got repetitive with little character growth, conflict, or resolution for implied conflicts. For so much talk about Melissa and Dayton’s parents and grandparents, they never actually meet up with them. Too many loose ends and no true growth or resolution. Not even an epilogue to try to tie it all up like so often happens. Asexuality and Dayton’s issues were handled well, and you could see how they’d be a good fit, but you never see the fruition of that possibility.

Loved the Ace representation!

This was a really sweet and fun romance; I loved reading about Rohan and Dayton and their journey to finding love. The cameos in the book were awesome, Conner playing matchmaker is always entertaining and I loved seeing Jackson, Sawyer and Cooper again. And of course, Melissa, who definitely needs her own book.

If you're in the mood for an angst free romance with interesting main characters I would recommend "Atypical love".
