Follow Masilo, Kamau, and Raziya on their journey for truth, independence, and honor in The Kimoni Legacy Book 1: Initiation.
If you are looking for a high, Afro-centric, fantasy, action, and adventure book, with the vibe of both Game of Thrones and Alex Haley’s Roots, then look no further. The Kimoni Legacy features a vast cast of characters but centers around three very different siblings and POVs: Masilo the heir apparent and hero commander of the Kimoni armies; Kamau, the younger brother and aspiring initiate; and Raziya, the youngest sister and the scholar and brains of the three. Each has their own journey to face both within their family and father’s court, and in the sinister threat brewing on the horizon.
Like Game of Thrones, it is a political and court intrigue kind of story with many warring factions, who are at the start of the story, as yet unaware of the far greater threat that looms above them all.
Richards is a fantastic and nuanced writer, and he drew me in with one of the best openings to a book I’ve read. The world building is both broad and intricate, with spectacular attention to detail, the world, the people, the histories, religions, and mythologies, an interesting magic system… no detail, bit of lore or backstory too small. The cast of characters is humblingly huge, but the author has good voicing for all of them that helped me keep track of them all for the most part. It’s really the only thing I struggled to keep up with.
From a craft perspective, I really enjoyed how nuanced the action beats were during dialog, full of extra information for the reader, and making for a very natural and rich reading experience. Fantastic action scenes were realistic enough that I had to skip some pages because my imagination is too vivid and can’t handle that much stress or terror. That’s a me thing, not the author’s problem.
Bravo on this obvious labor of love and a terrific debut novel.
I picked this up out of curiosity at Octavia's Bookshelf in Pasadena a few months ago and was happily surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Clean, strong prose, deft character development and an engrossing exploration of a world based on African history and myth, The Kimoni Legacy is an impressive first volume in what hopefully will be one of many.
Have you ever read a book solely after getting consumed by its writing style? Well, for me this happened as I proceeded to read The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards. Albeit I was a bit sceptical initially about the plot, nevertheless, I was proven wrong totally as I delved into it and the tale unfolded before me. An epic fantasy adventure saga, The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards is a book which is both fast-paced as well as multi-dimensional. Flamboyant as well as intriguing and introspective, here is fantasy fiction, the first part in a series you cannot miss for the world.
You know I have always felt that fantasy especially the one which is infused with elements of tradition from across lands is always intriguing to read and delve into. Be it the tiny snippets of rich cultural heritage, the talk of the lineages across the wide expanse of space and time, the transitionary details such as transcendence from one school of thought and societal trend to another, value systems and kaleidoscopic world-building, fantasy is something that always keeps one pretty satiated right from the start. That is the reason fantasy happens to be my favourite trope and a genre which truly quenches my thirst for reading indulgent, great fiction.
I am indicating here a book I recently read Kimoni Legacy: Initiation by Omari Richards. An epic fantasy saga, this spell-binding adventure is a brilliant escapade which unfolds wondrously delving us into a world which is built upon the lands of Nahwalla. Revolving around 3 primary characters- Kamau, Raziya and Masilo, this first book in the series primarily works upon the initial world-building, setting the groundwork for the tale as well as the essence of the characters. The land itself is an object of highly captivating interest to anyone who reads about it, there are secrets here which are unfolding gradually and power too. Ah yes, a power which can turn upon its inmates as well. After all, secrets that swarm such a place do have power, ain’t it?
There is Kamau, who feels that indeed, he is the chosen one- set to kill the Eagle and return glory to his purpose towards the Kimoni clan. Whilst on the path to it, he must come face to face with an enemy which is a creature as yet unknown to mankind. Whether he resorts to the “forbidden power” or not to achieve this purpose remains to be seen.
There is also Raziya who likes to update her knowledge related to the tomes of the place and is much ahead and futuristic in comparison to the others around her. However, owing to an age-old ritual as her education gets endangered of being jeopardized, she tries her best to escape this predicament. As she proceeds on forth, surrounded by danger, deception and much more, she also encounters a plea for help which puts her in a new paradigm, making her have a higher vantage of things.
Then there is also, Masilo Kimoni, who has been committed to protecting the land right since the time he had aided his father in doing so. Channeling his father’s spirit of bravery, as Masilo proceeds upon this herculean task, he does so at the cost of collaterals which are pretty dear. Yes, a dead wife as well as a missing son are much more than he could have ever imagined even in his worst nightmares. And yet, as a dangerous conspiracy unfolds, he realizes that he has to proceed and do much more than he is deigned to. As the tale gets darker and the magic of it gets murkier, we readers cannot help but be sucked by the vortex of excitement and adrenaline that promises to take us to lands which are enticing and wondrous. Each thing kept playing in my mind’s eye like a cinematic roll, described so well that I felt to be present in the jungles of Savanna at a point.
Each character has been built and carved meticulously, ensuring us how each of them fits surreptitiously one way or the other into the main plot. The minute I had a rendezvous with them I knew they had their own story to tell amidst here, which was what egged me on to further dive into the next pages to discover the characters next. A remarkable feat as Omari manages to seamlessly blend in all characters so beautifully, tying them, and fusing their presences so flawlessly so that they come together perfectly in the final plot.
How the 3 primary characters of Kamau, Raziya and Masilo get inspired from stories and incidents around them, to further on their own destined paths was awe-inspiring. I could see them grow through these stories themselves akin to how a being gets nurtured with experience of the ages, strengthening their emotional roots.
Omari’s character building is on-point and I was spoilt for choice as I proceeded to read the tale. My PoV itself kept changing as I read along with different viewpoints every time I read a certain character's PoV, I was taken in by that and resorted to proceeding in that manner. Be it Kamau, Raziya or even Masilo, I was alternately flitting in between their perspectives.
I also must stress the fact that the book has several great quotes/ anecdotes, several of which I have highlighted and kept. Each one of them is illuminating enough, not only from the story’s PoV but on a holistic note as well. Life-changing hustle was what Omari had embedded between the folds of this enigmatic literary wonder coming straight from the lands of Africa.
This book being the first in the series, Omari has managed to poise this one towards doing brilliant world-building as well as settling the characters in their viable setups. Not only is the narrative picturesque but every page adds vivid imagery, making me replay the scenario in my mind’s eye. The entire setup, the whole essence of tradition vis-à-vis truth was enigmatic to partake of. Yes, at times I felt being a part of the lush and beautiful landscape of Kitwana Savanna, being immersed in the demographics of Africa and its rich culture.
Omari has managed to give a rich cultural and emotional intensity to the tale, making it fast-paced as well as introspective at the same time. Not only is there emotion but there is action as well, yes action promising enough to make you delve into this epic saga again and again. Despite being a tad bit lengthy at 700-something pages, Omari has kept the prose of the tale free-flowing as well as gripping and enticing enough to ignore that trifle bit. And yet, as we finish this brilliant first part in the series, I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment in an epic saga which promises to be a great piece of adventure for all fans of fantasy fiction. P.S. There is politics, there is emotion, there is action and thrill as well as so much more in this grand saga so go for this one, you guys.
☕️I picked this book few weeks back when I felt like reading something different and I don’t regret a bit, the storyline revolves around Kamau, Raziya and Masilo, Kamau Kimoni believed his future was set in stone: kill the Crowned Eagle, and return a man of the Kimoni clan. Raziya Kimoni prefers the company of her ancient tomes and longs to expand her knowledge. But when an old betrothal and a mutilating ritual threatens to end her education, Raziya seeks an escape. Masilo Kimoni has been a man since he first led his father's army against their enemies. Since then, he has had one sole duty: protect the land.
A story that’s filled with fantasy, adventure and action, the book starts with Introduction of the three characters one by one followed by their lives, destiny and purpose of living, it’s a beautiful book but definitely has a darker side to it, it has these gothic and thrilling vibe to it which kept me interested till the very end, the best part about reading it is the world building, author slowly prepares you for the world he transforms you into!
You don’t know where you are going but you gotta trust the process, I love the action factor of the book because it acted as a spark and whenever you feel that everything is going normal and fine, that spark lights up the entire reading process.
When I picked it, I didn’t know what to expect but it turned out to be mind boggling and simply jaw dropping especially if you are a culture, tribe, people living in clan, history, action and legacy enthusiast this book will surely blow your mind.
I loved each character and honestly I felt a connection with each of them at different timelines of the story, like I didn’t enjoy Kamau at first but I loved Raziya throughout and I started to like how Masilo was built!
The storyline unravels chapter after chapter, there are so many new things you will learn and discover in the process of reading it, honestly if you are a curious reader then you are sure enjoy it as much as I did! It’s a medium paced story but definitely have a lot of thud thud moments and fast paced scenes.
The map provided at the beginning is everything a thoughtful reader needs, it helped me throughout not just initially. The language is very very descriptive and creative I would say, I didn’t feel that book was dragged or stretched, the story is huge because it’s grand, because it talks about fantasy and origin like no other books have ever talked is what I feel!
I was totally immersed in it, though I will recommend you to read it on your pace and read it slow, I love the bonds between the characters, apart from these three there are a lot of more characters I loved!
It’s a mystical read with rituals, myths, magical and unmatchable energies of believers! My favourite part has to be the ending, I just loved how it ends, a very satisfying and captivating end and I can’t wait to read the next book to see where the adventure is carried further and what challenges the characters face!
I really loved it, I will highly recommend it to fantasy lovers and anyone out there! Go for it.
This is an epic political fantasy, firmly in the canon (in both length and style) alongside Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time and the like.
OVERVIEW: First in a planned series Slow-paced Features cutthroat familial and societal politics Multiple POVS 3rd person (limited) narrator Afro-centric Igbo-influenced lore, language, mythology, religion, and world building (Savanna setting) Large cast of characters, comprising many clans and cultures Multiple, intersecting plot lines, including a unique take on the combo of drugs, zombies, and plague Large-scale world building Secretive magic users Caste system No spice
PLOT: Book 1 is a coming of age story of three siblings from a powerful clan, each with with their own goals, traumas, and demons. Masilo (oldest), the warrior, seeks peace and restoring a family connection. Kamau, the overlooked middle child, seeks recognition and has a very interesting awareness and critique of justice in his society. Raziya, a scholar and talented arbiter, believes in saving underrepresented women. Her storyline was my favorite. Series wise, I think it’s heading in the direction of proving that if a society values and saves its most underrepresented, it can in fact save and uplift EVERYONE.
RANDOM THOUGHTS/NOTES: Unlike Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time series, there's no misogyny, but the text does deal with scary and difficult issues (TW/CW: genital mutilation, child-adult arranged political marriages)
Explores the right and wrong of justifying violence and whether some violence is more justifiable than others depending on the nobility/necessity of the cause, i.e., state-sanctioned war vs violent revolution. The writing doesn’t tell the reader what to think. It leaves us tense in gray area, as it should.
Explores climate themes. Humanity has caused too many natural imbalances. The land and other natural forces are at play, right alongside the characters, to restore balance and equilibrium.
The magic system relies on cultivated connections with the spirit world and spiritual knowledge of herbs.
No spice until the end of the book where there isnot-explicit intimacy featuring Masilo, the only adult-age main character, and another consenting adult and possible future love interest. (Kamau and Raziya, his siblings, are teenage children.)
Tips: I recommend the digital version. This is a long, complicated book, and I mean that as a compliment! I utilized the search feature for quick lookups. Seeds of knowledge are dropped throughout the book, and several times I was thankful for the convenience of the search function to reacquaint myself with names, topics, patterns, and historical events.
This is the most epic Fantasy I have read in a long time. Cecil B. DeMille would have a field day making it a film. It is a story of magical and political manipulation occurring in a complex, barbarous world based on ancient times in Sub-Saharan Africa. The physical and social settings benefit from rich and plentiful worldbuilding. The actions and mannerisms of the players are recounted in miniscule detail as well.
The three main characters have modern attitudes and ideals, but they somehow survive in this primitive culture, a stratified, cruel and repressive society where child rearing is done by threat and punishment, and 100% success is barely enough. I found it a bit of a stretch that three such characters would be born into the same royal family in such a society. Also, this kind of atmosphere creates a delicate balance, because too much repression and harassment eventually become unpleasant for many readers.
It is an interesting exercise to watch these characters from the points of view of their siblings, as the inner motivations and attitudes of each are so different from what the others observe.
These three stand out as fully dimensioned, sympathetic characters who develop naturally as the story progresses. The many secondary characters are also better rounded than usual, and considerable time is spent on revealing personalities, histories, clothing and behaviour.
The rest of the story is taken up with the multi-levelled conflict, with tension boiling under the surface of diplomatic words, and traitors behind every corner.
The main external threats the realm faces are both political and magical. Every move is hedged around by a labyrinth of treaties and other considerations. Every maneuver is accomplished through a haggle of office politics, no matter how small the favour, how low caste the servant.
The magical conflict approaches too much of a good thing. It involves the traditional African range of demons, witches, and sorcerers. Then zombies appear. And teleportation portals. This overabundance actually reduces the suspense, as we are soon sated by the constant new magical powers that seem to solve every conflict. The action is somewhat rescued by many battle scenes of all sizes and configurations, fully described in all their gory detail.
In total, I found this book entertaining but rather overwhelming, although the second half improved once the conflict became more defined and we got to know the characters better,
Highly recommended for fans of political intrigue and epic sagas.

Kimoni Legacy: Initiation, is a fast paced fantasy read. It is multi dimensional. The author has done a marvelous job at creating an afro-centric world. Fantasy reads with magic and heroes are cool, but fantasy reads with rich cultural elements, ethics and ethnicity representation and morals as well as values are pure gold! In this regard, I absolutely loved this book. I love how the land of Nahwalla has been represented. The book features wide range of characters that represents people of different values in real world. The author gives ample focus on the supporting characters too apart from the trio lead. The story has been told from multiple viewpoints by a third person narrator. I loved how the author slowly unfolds secrets with an interesting flow that keeps one hooked. The book cooks slowly but blooms beautifully. It takes enough time to build a good setting to establish a solid base for the plot. The book has multiple intersecting plot-lines that reminds me of Game of Thrones. But, authors skillful narrative technique keeps things simple so that readers don't get confused. If you enjoy politics in your reads, you are going to love Kimoni Legacy. Another thing I would like to mention is: Dialogues! I have highlighted so many good quotes. The prose quality is elegant. It properly maintains the vibe of the book. With well built setting, breathtaking adventure, gorgeous dialogues, twisted politics, creative characterisation and ethnic representation, Kimoni Legacy: Initiation is a must read for all fantasy readers.

The Kimoni Legacy By Omari Richards Genre - Fantasy Rating 5/5
The Kimoni Legacy is Omari Richards's magnificent literary expedition that takes you to the land of myths and legends, shining armor, legendary valor, bravery, and astonishing atmosphere created in the heart of the long forest land that still has some sacred alluring effect to make you hold your heart.
It's an exquisitely crafted story of Nahawalla. Once there were three siblings of noble heritage. On a vast colorful canvas, the author portrayed his story of secrets, power, and a creature that myth or reality no one knows. This land is under threat by an unknown enemy, it is a land where tradition and truth blend with each other.
Brimming with legendary tales, the jungle chieftain's life goes on. Author delved into the themes of blood-sucking Spiders, and cannibalism, laced with a battlefield story and heartwarming life saga that revolves around revenge. Witchcraft and vengeance are an undeniable call for the forest dwellers. Kamau Kimoni, Raziya Kimoni, and Masilo Kimoni, author created these characters in a way that perfectly captured the imaginary flow of fantasy and the raw essence of nomadic life lingered with politics, a sense of hope and resilience.
Omari's writing perfectly adapted their love for the homeland, fear of unknown territory, challenging fearful stories of unknown creatures, and emotional journey. The restless vengeance that wrapped up mindfulness is equally well elaborated creating a striking contrast to complement the bravery. And seeking independence, and honor in their life, a dream, a yearning for a good life infusing pain in the reader's heart in a deliberate style that is indulging in reading.
Besides the war story, Omari brilliantly portrayed the human emotional aspects that give more depth to every character and put dimensional patchwork in the storyline. The tapestry of the story unfurled slowly with an in-depth introduction of the main characters which showcases this prolific author's ability of observation.
Masilo's complex character is well defined by the conflict of his own emotional soft corner and determined heart; on the other side, Razia's character skillfully explores a strong woman, which emphasizes different shades of human personality.
The way the author penned every character that emerged from the book feels very realistic with their personality, and the character's idiosyncratic style is designed in a skilled projection that makes reading an amazing experience. Every character feels so beautiful and real that makes me feel like I am reading real-life stories.
The quality of Omari's writing willing to gives you goosebumps in every chapter of the book. It's an excellent literary journey for a fantasy lover, I would say unmissable. A perfect combination of war, mystery, and forestry, a day in a vast natural landscape, paintings of brave hearts. If you're a lover of political fantasy like me then The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards is going to be a treat for you. With a huge cast of characters this one spins with multiple povs and mostly third person narrative to give you an amazing journey in an AFRO centric, Igbo influenced lore that demands your attention from first to last. I just love the fantastic action scenes along with the political scheming in the narrative. The magic system was very very original to draw you slowly but surely. Yes, this one has slow pace to present the beautiful detailings of the world creation in an amusing way. Multiple plotlines are intersecting each other to build a world that is complex but amazing.
A strong clan's three siblings, each with their own aspirations, scars, and demons, go through a coming-of-age story in book one. Masilo, the eldest and warrior, wants to bring the family back together and find peace. The middle child, Kamau, is self-conscious and very perceptive about the justice system in his community. He also aspires to be acknowledged. Underrepresented women need to be saved, according to Raziya, a gifted arbitrator and scholar.
I loved the fantasy map that helped me to understand the complex actions of the book. The prose was great to sketch such deep meaningful fantasy saga. Many moral messages are there scattered throughout the book and I enjoyed all of them. I think this is an amazing story that would be loved by any fantasy reader.
I was searching for a book that would refresh my mood for a while and then I came across with The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards. It was just mind blowing and worth reading. I enjoyed every moment with it. The three progonists - Kamau, Raziya and Masilo were so so awesome and different. I just loved how they deal with their problems with so different tactics. Their feelings are so finely sketched by the author. It was as if they all are so real and close to my heart. Kamau wanted to kill the crowned eagle and return as a man of Kimoni clan. Whereas knowledge lover Raziya was finding an escape. Masilo only wanted to protect the land. Fantasy, action and adventure mixes to present us a beautiful journey of these three that is going to surprise the reader.
I haven't expected much from this one but was surprised to see how the author present so neat tribal culture of African origin with moral values and traditions. History, action and legacy comes live with every page. I just loved the map to follow this complex storyline. The language is spectacular to read. The dialogues, world building, detailings all are so beautiful and original. I love the infusions of myths and rituals with this amazing narrative. The end was genuinely satisfying and I couldn't ask for more. If you are a lover of multi dimensional epic fantasy that is built with a huge cast of characters and multiple povs then this one is a perfect match for your need.
As a fantasy lover I have read many many series and I do enjoy really long books with amazing magic system and detailed world creation but what really amazes me always is 'multiple povs'. Yes, this feature of fantasy novels goes really great for me. I do enjoy different people's emotions and psychological advancements during the important phases of the book. The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards is the latest book that I adored with all of my heart where the author used this feature so aptly to present political scheming in a big complex world where many characters are active for their own gain.
The world creation is also superb. I like how the author infused African mythological elements in the storyline and sketched so believable cultural ingredients in a fictional land. The imagination behind the scenes is really great. Sometimes I was really lost in so many schemes and characters. The map in the book really helped me to understand the proceedings many a time. I also loved the care the author provided to sketch diverse characters and their feelings. They aren't not flat and similar minded. This makes the novel an really good one.
The scattered moral messages throughout the book are really nice. The dialogues and the magic system are so beautiful and original. The third person narrative is brilliant for building a long storyline. I enjoyed every moment with this one.
I was looking for a book to lift my spirits temporarily when I stumbled upon Omari Richards' The Kimoni Legacy. It was simply amazing and well worth reading. I relished every second of using it. Omari Richards' The Kimoni Legacy will be a treat for you if, like me, you enjoy political fantasy. This one has a large cast of characters and tells its story largely in the third person, giving you an incredible voyage through AFRO-centric, Igbo-influenced history that captures your interest from beginning to end.
With a touch of enchantment, the epic adventure narrative whisks the reader to the newly constructed Nahwalla setting where they meet Kamau, Raziya, and Masilo. I fell deeply in love with these three siblings because of the exquisite way in which their emotions and sentiments are portrayed in their journey of fate. The backdrop context of the three of them was simply wonderful. In book one, the coming-of-age story of three brothers from a strong clan—each with their own goals, wounds, and demons—takes place.
The characterization in the novel is superb, and the exquisite writing properly conveys the atmosphere. The rich imagery always helps the reader visualise the scene, which is excellent. A good many of the thought-provoking discussions in the book have been noted by me. It was a truly enjoyable read.
Vast historical context for huge politics and their consequences is your choice of a fantasy world that has its own culture and belief system? Then look no further, The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards is just perfect for your choice. It has everything that goes with your taste - afro-centric world building, multiple POVS, slow-pace, politics, 3rd person narrator, large cast of characters, multiple intersecting plot lines, huge world building, good magic system, and low spice level. I haven't read such vibrant and diverse fantasy like this one for long.
The story presents three protagonists with very different morales to achieve their destiny. Their history and journey to protect their land is going to give you a fantastic time. I have finished this big chunk of pages in so short time for the gripping storyline and relatable characters. Their feelings and emotions were so mine. I was lost in this fantasy world from the very first pages. The world creation was really nice and detailed to satisfy readers like me.
I loved the narrative and prose quality. The dialogues and action scenes were just fantastic. If you love long, complex fantasy books then guys look no further, it's going to be your new favourite read.
Since my childhood I always enjoy vast complex plotlines. It gives me the space to understand the characters and their feelings in the journey. The Kimoni Legacy by Omari Richards is an amazing read that makes you happy if you're like me. It's an epic fantasy saga with rich cultural inputs based on afro centric world.
The book has multiple povs and intersecting plotline to amuse you through out the novel. It mostly narrated by third person narrator and that suits the atmosphere. The book has three very different protagonists with very different mindset. The story gorgeously sketches their background and journey. The world creation is dazzlingly beautiful. The language is prosaic and perfect to set the tune for entire read.
Mythological elements and dark political situation makes this book more unique. This one goes in the same bracket of wheel of time. The magic system and detailings of the fantasy world is so brilliant. The slow pace is so good for this type of books as it provides time to understand the complex actions. I enjoyed this one from start to finish and think everyone who loves big worlds of fantasy will love it too.
The Kimoni Legacy: Initiation is a captivating book. You won’t think you’re reading a first time novel from a young author. The rich descriptions of a new world are well-researched and vivid, leading to a clear view of where the characters are and what they’re experiencing. The character development is great. I genuinely cared for the three main characters and felt very invested in their stories. Reading chapters from the three different points of view and anticipating how they will overlap and come together in the end was exciting and definitely added to the experience of reading this book. Can’t wait to see what comes next!
There are so many characters and the action jumps between them. Then the author describes each person and tribe makes it impossible to follow. Quit reading after just 5%.
This is what they mean by an epic tale!!! Kamau, Masilo, and Raziya are so well defined. The language and prose are beautiful, and I loved the world building. This was a great series opener!!
