A secret romance was just the start of the story…

Tucked into a crook of the Norfolk coast lies Nelson’s Bar—an idyllic village where time seems to stand still. Maddy Cracey has called this beautiful spot home all her life, as had her husband Adey—until an epic row sent him storming out into a blizzard, with no sign of him since that fateful night.

Six years on, and Maddy’s life in the village has settled into a gentle pattern with her young daughter and Great Aunt Ruthie. However, when handsome stranger Raff turns up with a handful of long-forgotten love letters, their quiet life is upended as family secrets from the past are unearthed.

As Raff and Maddy get to know each other, they grow closer and a love story of their own seems inevitable. But when Maddy receives a mysterious message, she can’t help but wonder whether her own past is as distant as she'd thought it was…

My dearest, darling Maddy,

Thank you for your cards – or, at least, the first you wrote. It’s about the only good thing to happen to me this Christmas.

As for your second card – you’d obviously heard something of my Christmas plans. I have been with Antonella but not ‘with’ Antonella, if you get my drift. She and her boyfriend organised the whole farce I’ve been caught up in.

But who cares about that? I care about you. This is an I-like-you-too letter, an I-have-missed-you-like-crazy-and-want-you-like-crazy letter. An I-can’t-forget-that-night letter. And definitely a yes-I-want-to-talk letter, and I’m sorry I was a jealous idiot about Adey.

My dearest darling Maddy … it is a love letter.

Merry Christmas. Love, Raff xx

PS: I’m standing outside in the snow. Please will you let me in?
if I ever be at the receiving end of a love letter *deep sigh* I would simply pass away 😭♥️

***

I saw a review on audible saying that it's a charming plot involving the past…it’s slightly Christmassy but not overly festive with nice narration and I was sold 🥳

EXCERPT: As the early November wind blew Maddy Cracey along the cliff path from High Cottage that Friday morning it was hard for her not to think of her fair-haired, grey-eyed husband, with his naughty grin and capricious ways. Eyes drawn to the tossing sea, for the millionth time she sent out her thoughts to him:Adey, where are you? What happened that night?' Adey Austen had done a vanishing act one snowy December night nearly seven years ago, and since then, Maddy's life had been defined by a secret and a lie.

ABOUT 'THE CHRISTMAS LOVE LETTERS': A secret romance was only the start of the story… Tucked into a crook of the Norfolk coast lies Nelson’s Bar – an idyllic village where time seems to stand still. Maddy Cracey has called this beautiful spot home all her life, as had her husband Adey – until an epic row sent him storming out into a blizzard, with no sign of him since that fateful night.

MY THOUGHTS: The Christmas Love Letters is a beautifully written, emotional, heart-tugging Christmas read with a touch of both drama and mystery that I read overnight, unable to put down.
The characters are well fleshed out and relatable with reactions that we have all felt/experienced as life and love delivers unexpected blows.

I admired Maddy's fortitude, but she does lack some necessary communication skills, clamming up when she is stressed, or putting her foot in her mouth by speaking without thinking. Great-Aunt Ruthie, for whom Maddy is a carer, is a sweetie. She has lost so much during her life, including her sight, but she keeps a smile on her face and just keeps on going. She loves Maddy like a daughter. They have an easy and loving relationship.

I had all the feels reading this (arm yourself with a serious box of tissues) and enjoyed that the romance didn't overwhelm the mystery or the family-drama aspects of the story, but instead worked as an integral part of it.

I'm not going to say anything else about the characters or the plot for fear of giving away spoilers. But this is definitely my favorite Christmas read of 2023.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🎄closed door

If you haven’t read a Sue Moorcroft book yet, what’s stopping you?!

Contemporary fiction author Moorcroft knows her audience, has direction/purpose to her narrative, uses strong character voices (unique voices for each character), and always hides something within her stories that keeps readers turning pages. You can always be assured of a heartfelt read centered around life and love.

In a case of necessity, Madeline ‘Maddy’ Cracey, moves in with her Aunt ‘Grant’ Ruthie to High Cottage in Nelson's Bar, Norfolk, England. Maddy’s husband, Adey Austen, disappeared one night 7 years ago, leaving her the talk of the town. Struggling financially and trying to raise her unborn child alone, Maddy believes that the move is reciprocal - Aunt Ruthie needs assistance, too. Little does she know that there’s more on the line than helping her with her deteriorating eyesight!

Just when she settles and thinks she’s put the secrets and lies behind her, a man named Rafferty Edmonds shows up at High Cottage claiming to have secrets that would upend her quiet existence. Secrets that involve her aunt!

I loved the prologue and how it set the scene for intrigue! I had to keep reading to know more about the ‘gift’ and how these letters connected to the rest of the story. Furthermore, I absolutely loved that all my predictions were wrong with this one! Moorcroft found a way to surprise me with the path less taken and sensitively wove in some darker elements and padded them with a heartwarming tale. I’m always hesitant to pick up yet another book featuring a lost diary or lost letters, but Moorcroft’s examination revealed an intriguing story of real love and long-kept secrets.

This is one holiday read you won’t want to miss!

I was gifted this copy by Avon Books, UK and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

This was a great read and I really enjoyed it – the ending even gave me goosebumps! Not only are there dumpings of snow as Christmas Day draws nearer, but I loved reading about the characters and the mystery surrounding Maddy’s husband.

Maddy’s husband disappeared one night nearly seven years ago, leaving her pregnant, with lots of debt and barely a house over her head. The trail has gone cold and Maddy has since been forced to move on, although she can never forget about her husband and what was behind his disappearance. However, caring for her great aunt Ruthie and raising her daughter, Maddy has no time to dwell on what might have been and has moved on with her life.

However, the main focus of the story is Ruthie being reunited with her long-lost daughter. This was an emotional aspect to the plot and I loved how sensitively Moorcroft handles this topic. The path to being reunited is never easy and this was reflected by Ffion’s conflicting emotions and her natural protectiveness towards her own daughter, Chloe. Indeed, Maddy gets a sense of displacement as she becomes aware of Ruthie’s new, extended family.

Yet, this would not be a true Christmas story without a touch of romance and I loved watching the developing connection between Maddy and Raff. There are quite a few parallels between the two characters and I liked seeing how they are drawn to each other, especially when Maddy starts to receive mysterious text messages. They are both clearly meant to be together but with Ruthie’s changing circumstances and Maddy’s absent husband, it was never going to be straightforward. Yet, Raff is like a knight in shining armour with how respectful he is to Maddy and considerate to her circumstances.

But, the character that steals the limelight in this story is undoubtedly Maddy’s daughter. She is such a cannonball of energy and I loved her honesty: sometimes you just need a child’s unfiltered perspective to set the world straight! Her innocence and enthusiasm is loveable; I warmed to her and enjoyed her reaction to particular adults later in the story.

This was a great festive read about families coming together and new relationships being established. The warmth of Christmas shines through and all those snowy scenes had me reaching for a cosy blanket. A brilliant book to snuggle up to.

With thanks to Avon books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sue Moorcroft is an author whose annual Christmas book is one I always look forward to. She writes with heart, about relationships and holiday magic. The Christmas Love Letters is set in the small village of Nelson's Bar on the Norfolk Coast. Six years earlier, Maddy Cracey's husband left the house in anger and frustration and has not been seen or heard from since. In the meantime, Maddy had a daughter (she was pregnant when Adey disappeared) and has moved in with her Great Aunt Ruthie. She rents out her cottage to make ends meet and is Aunt Ruthie's care giver. A handsome man named Raff shows up at Aunt Ruthie's with a packet of Love Letters from Ruthie to his father. There are secrets shared in those letters that change their lives, for the better?

I really enjoyed this story of family, friendship, survival, romance, forbidden love, new beginnings and more. The Christmas Love Letters is a well-written and plotted story with heartbreak and more. My emotions were all over ranging from anger, sadness, joy, and more. The romance was an important part of the story, but not the whole story. I loved Aunt Ruth and Lyla, Maddy's daughter. They were the important ones in her life and they had wonderful relationships. Aunt Ruth or Granty Ruth as Lyla called her was more like a mother and grandmother to them. Maddy is a strong woman, one who figured out how to stand on her own two feet, survive and provide a stable environment for her daughter. She still doesn't know what happened to Adey, although she still wonders, she has moved on with her life. There is a mystery, secrets, family drama and more in this one and it was a wonderful story with an uplifting and heartwarming Christmas message.

Who doesnt love reading love letters right?!
The Christmas Love Letters is a heartwarming tale of love, family, and friendship, set in a beautiful small town in Norfolk, full of Christmas joy and cosiness that is perfect for the festive season!

This is a story full of nostalgia, romance, heartbreak and hope. I became invested in the characters right from the beginning. This one kept me intrigued with its family secrets, complex characters and parallel love stories.

Set in an idyllic village on the Norfolk coast, the authors amazing writing style had me feeling like I had been transported there totally immersed in the story!

Sue Moorcroft - The Christmas Love Letters.

It never ceases to amaze me, just how authors like Sue Moorcroft keep producing such wonderful books. Their minds must be an incredible place to inhabit!

#TheChristmasLoveLetters is a gorgeous story, all about love, friendship and the meaning of family.

Maddy is bringing up her young daughter Lyla alone, while also being a full time carer for her aunt Ruthie.
Their life is settled, but ghosts from the past are never too far away.
When a handsome stranger comes to their door, with a bunch of letters and a million questions, all their lives are changed one way or another.

Maddy is a tough cookie. Despite the uncertainty that hangs over her life, she strives to keep going and never gives less than 100% to her aunt Ruthie or Lyla.

I think I fell a little bit in love with Raff. He is such a sweet soul and in some ways he seemed a little lost. That aside he still manages to be a perfect gentleman. Well most of the time, if you know what I mean!!!

Once again Sue Moorcroft has brought together a group of characters who are likeable, occasionally they make you want to give them a shake, but ultimately they are relatable and blend together into something quite special.

I loved the festive feel in this book. Sue Moorcroft has captured the magical excitement of the season and woven it into a story that positively overflows with charm and warmth.

#TheChristmasLoveLetters is sweet and touching. It’s romantic, warm hearted and full of love.
I was completely drawn in from page one and thoroughly loved the journey that these wonderful characters went on. I felt a little sad at the end, because I just didn’t want to leave this lovely lot behind.

A big thumbs up to Sue Moorcroft aswell for writing a character with a visual impairment so realistically. You got it spot on Sue. And I say that as someone who lives with severe sight loss.

A feel good festive family drama… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a lovely and moving book. This book had all the Christmas feels, and so much love.

I loved the idea of the love letters being kept and read over and over again, Ruthie and Nigel had a love that just couldn't be, but they found a way to always be in each others lives. Raff and Ffion were great, they took the news about their dad and Ruthie well and the reunion between Ruthie and Ffion was so movng.

The other story line of Maddy and Adey was really quite clever and had me hooked. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, then a curve ball is thrown. The trip to Cornwall really was unexpected. Layla was a great character, a six year old child with a big heart and a good head on her shoulders. I loved her enthusiasm.

The Christmas magic still happened, even if it was getting close to midnight, I was so happy for Maddy and Raff. I loved reading this, and I was sucked in right from the start. A wonderful Christmas read about family and love.

I received a free copy of, The Christmas Love Letters, by Sue Moorcroft, , from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Maddy Austen and her husband Adey lives in Nelson's Bar,in Norfolk. Until one winters day when Adey and Maddy had a really bad fight, and left. Six years later, Maddy moved on, and then Adey comes back, upending her whole life. Will she stay with Adey or begin a new relationship? I did not care for Adey at all, he was really selfish and self centered. Maddy and her daughter are lovely though.

The Christmas Love Letters is the first novel I’ve read from Ms. Moorcroft, and I didn’t realise what I’d been missing until now. Not only did I find her romance with a difference utterly unputdownable, but she kindled all my emotions. But what grabbed my attention was her nonlinear narrative, keeping the mystery of two families’ predicaments alive and, more importantly, making me feel like I was right where I should be.

Through the eyes of Raffety Edmonds and Maddy Cracey Austen, they voice their thoughts in the third person, giving me a bird’s eye view of their doubts and fears and how they would deal with them. But what I liked most was how Ms. Moorcroft had woven abundant intrigue into the story–the letters for one, a disappearance for another. And the setting is breathtaking! Even though I’m familiar with Norfolk, I would love to visit the enchanting seaside town of Nelson’s Bar near the edge of a clifftop.

I quickly learned that Maddy had been left in a tight spot when things fell apart. Even though her past was troubled, that never stopped her from being a problem solver. I can’t tell you how much her tenaciousness, her ability to bounce back and how she protected her loved ones touched my heart. She and her spirited young daughter move in with her great-aunt, whom she gladly takes care of. So when a bearer of secrets appears out of the blue, their humble life is thrown for a loop.

The bearer is Raff, whose scruffy good looks and charm great-niece and aunt appreciate, myself included–not letting on; I’m sure you’ll love what he does for a living. Apart from his gorgeousness, there is so much more to this man and his roots, which Maddy will discover at a very agreeable pace. Frankly, it felt like he was opening Pandora’s Box. While surprises are in store for her, why is her aunt and she so eager for him to keep in touch? Their reasons are related to the same difference; however, when Maddy starts to receive unsettling messages–the twist I never saw coming fueled the story to the point that I was utterly dumbfounded and seething angry.

A good story needs conflict to give it that real-life feel, and Maddy had her fair share with an individual who went out of his way to rattle her cage. I also disliked him and clocked his transparency sooner than she did. That said, great secondary characters surround her, always willing to lend a hand or give her sound advice. Raff tries to do his best for everyone concerned but doesn’t escape from a couple of complexities. Yes, angst abounds, and I wallowed in every second of it.

My. Ooh. My! The letters! Who wrote them is for you to find out, but Maddy read them with such sensitivity that I wasn’t the only one to shed a tear. I had no idea how to put my thoughts down as her and Raff’s stories come together in a way that left this reader lost for words. I honestly cannot recommend this Xmas romance enough. Bravo, Ms Moorcroft!

Maddy, mother to young Lyla, found a home with her Great Aunt Ruthie when her husband disappeared one night almost seven years ago, leaving her pregnant and penniless – she’s now Ruthie’s carer, but through their very special relationship has also found the support and love she really needed to see her through the most difficult of times. With no sign of him in the intervening years – perhaps he did fall over the cliff on that stormy night – the time is approaching when she can call her marriage officially ended and move on.

But while her own story certainly isn’t over, an unexpected visitor then enters all their lives – Raff arrives with a bundle of love letters Ruthie wrote to his father during their earlier affair, and a number of secrets from the past slowly begin to unravel. At first, Maddy is fiercely protective, worried that revisiting the past will affect Ruthie’s frail health – but as the full story slowly emerges, and they read the letters together, it becomes plain that there are ends left untied and the chance of a happy ending. And Maddy finds herself and Raff becoming closer, as they learn to trust each other – might there be a chance of a happy ending of her own, or could there be some unexpected obstacles in the way?

I loved absolutely everything about this book – especially the heartbreaking background to the letters, the way the secrets within them slowly emerged, and their ramifications and emotional impact in the present. But that’s not the only unfolding story – there’s a great deal more to make this one a compelling read with a particularly uncertain outcome. The setting of Nelson’s Bar is nicely detailed and a wonderful backdrop (not the first time the author’s taken us to that part of Norfolk, but nothing to worry a first-time reader), and there’s a very strong focus on family – both chosen and real – which is something I always really enjoy. Friendship too, often complicated, sometimes disappointing, always layered, and so well handled. There’s that perfect balance between lightness – with touches of lovely humour – and those rather darker edges that are always present in the lives of the author’s beautifully drawn characters. And, of course, it’s Christmas – with just the right festive touches and occasions, and unexpected snowfall just to make everything that bit more difficult for everyone.

Emotionally, this book was everything I could have possibly wanted – but it’s a real page-turner of a story too, and one that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page (and my goodness, what a perfect ending!). My favourite book yet? Yes, of course it is – until the next one. Do add this one to your Christmas list – I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

I’m usually a massive fan of Sue Moorcroft’s books and whilst I did enjoy this one, I didn’t love it. Yes the plot line was good and it had some adorable characters but I felt it was quite drawn out in places and could have been wrapped up much quicker. I know I’m in the minority with this but whilst it is a well written warm-hearted festive read, it wasn’t one for me. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
