Though Kimi ni Todoke is only her second series following many one-shot stories, it has already racked up accolades from various "Best Manga of the Year" lists. Winner of the 2008 Kodansha Manga Award for the shojo category, Kimi ni Todoke also placed fifth in the first-ever Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) contest in 2008.
The level of cuteness is astronomical. I'm so used to shojo manga focusing on the male-female relationship that it's refreshing to instead see friendship take center stage. This volume has a nice arc to the story and the way that there's drama without it being overkill is excellent! I'm also really loving the how expressive the art is.
I love this volume so much! The power of female friendship shines brightly, as misunderstandings are cleared up, and Sawako learns that she has friends.
¡Me encanta!
i don’t think i’ll rate any of these volumes lower than a 5 star. still so nostalgic and i just adore the cast. this is where a lot of misunderstandings begin but we truly get to see the friendship between sawako, chizuru & yano in this one 😭
4.5 stars I don’t know how many times my eyes watered, but I do know that they watered a lot–from both sadness and happiness. I have learned that the Kimi ni Todoke series has a heartwarming story about first love and friendships and knowing about what you want. This is a series that will make you smile…and sometimes it will have your heart shattering into a million pieces from emotion.
So much happens in this volume but all of it focuses on one thing: the importance of friendship. This is why I like this manga. It not only has a bit of sweet romance but it also has friendship in it. You don’t see that in a lot of shojo manga.
Sawako’s friendship with Yano and Yoshida is challenged by a lot in this volume. The rumors, Sawako’s low self-esteem, and her tendency to not care what she wants as a person are all things that get in the way with that. I read this volume without stopping because I wanted to see what happened to Sawako and her friendship with Yano and Yoshida.
There were a lot of sad moments in this one little volume which surprised me greatly. Some moments had my eyes watering so much that they started forming into droplets of tears! I just felt so sad for Sawako and the situation she was in. I am starting to feel like Sawako is a best friend of mine. This only made reading this all the more painful. But there are some really inspiration moments. And then there are some moments that were just plain funny.
Sawako develops a lot as a character volume two. She promises herself to think more about herself and I am proud of her for that. She is also starting to stand up against people when they are being mean to her friends. Sure, she is still a sweet girl who makes study notes for everyone in her class but she is becoming a stronger person.
All in all, this manga is still going strong. It is heartwarming and I can’t get enough of it! I also want to spend more time with Sawako
Such a moving story and teared up more than once! It is a VERYYYYYY moving story of friendship and communicating one's feelings, even when one doesn't always understand what they are feeling (though that also helps people TO understand when we DO communicate).
I absolutely loved how brave Sadako was in defending her friends and just her overall discovery of knowing and making friends. It was so beautiful and I think a very powerful read for teenagers.
I feel a little bad for Kazehaya because it's exciting (for me!) to know that his feelings for Sadako are becoming more pronounce and very eager to see how this romance starts unfolding!
Onto volume three and already ready to start collecting this manga (since I'm reading a library volume)!
Sawako Kuronuma is a victim of pop culture. With her pale skin, long straight black hair in a particular style, and an inability to put on a fake smile (it just looks creepy), Sawako bears a passing resemblance to Sadako, the scary ghost girl from Ringu (“The Ring”). A classmate accidentally called her “Sadako” in elementary school, and the nickname stuck, causing rumors that Sawako actually had supernatural powers/a curse, so people shunned her.
Sawako’s gotten used to being alone, but does yearn for connection. So the fact that popular boy Shota Kazehaya shows no fear of her and actively communicates with Sawako is a blessing. Jock Chizuru Yoshida and fashionable Ayane Yano (“Chizu” and “Yano-chin”) initially meant to tease Sawako, but quickly realized what a sweetie she is and their relationship is now friendly. Sawako’s learning to open up and slowly the rest of the class is beginning to realize they’ve misjudged her.
Except that as this volume begins, nasty rumors have surfaced about Chizu and Yano-chin’s past, rumors supposedly spread by Sawako! The whisper campaign makes it sound like Sawako’s just using the girls to get closer to Kazehaya. Sawako’s three friends find it suspicious that Sawako’s credited with the evil rumors, given her legendary shyness, but when they hint around the subject, Sawako’s poor communication skills make her feelings towards them seem ambiguous.
After Sawako is bullied in the girls’ room, Chizu and Yano-chin come to her rescue and the air is cleared. At least for now. But if Sawako didn’t start those rumors, who did?
One of the themes of this early 2000s shoujo manga, English subtitle “From Me to You” is “communication.” Sawako and her friends learn early on that the best way to resolve misunderstandings is to speak to the person you’re having a misunderstanding with directly and straightforwardly. While they struggle with this (Sawako isn’t good at confrontation and has problems finding the right words) and have to relearn the lesson several times, this does mean that interpersonal situations that might take several volumes to resolve in other romance manga are cleared up in a few chapters here.
Sawako is a good central character for a romance. She’s good people, but her quirks keep her from feeling too perfect, and her occasional missteps seem organic to her personality. Kazehaya is a bit flatter, as the boyfriend a lot of girls would have wanted to have in school–handsome, athletic and caring. His problems tend to come from outside, like the girl who started the rumors (seen in this volume but not officially introduced), and Kazuichi “Pin” Arai, the baseball coach who’s not at all more mature than his students.
Minor characters in this volume include Ryu Sanada, Chizu’s childhood friend who’d like to be a bit more, and an unnamed girl who turns out to be the one who nicknamed Sawako in the first place. She feels guilty about that, not enough to actually be Sawako’s friend, but makes sure to always talk to Sawako when they meet.
This is a very “sweet” manga romance story, and very popular in its day. There was even an anime!
Content note: Bullying, slut-shaming. Pin overindulges in alcohol.
Recommended for shoujo romance fans who prefer a little common sense in their relationships. Komi Can’t Communicate fans may also enjoy this as it’s a clear ancestor.
I love that this volume focuses on the friendship between Sawako, Yano and Yoshida and I love the wholesomeness of their relationship.
The plot is a little repetitive and there's the miscommunication trope (which I didn't mind because the characters respond inline with their personalities), but the payoff is so worth it. The resolution made me so happy and emotional. Sawako is so precious and brave!
This volume doesn't focus as much on Sawako and Kazehaya, but I love how they encourage each other to do their best. Kazehaya is smitten and I love that he's so stunned whenever Sawako smiles. The art and emotions in one of the scenes is so beautiful.
Love the characters, the art, the vibes and the balance between light-hearted and weighted moments. I think it's time to rewatch the anime.
This was so cuteeee! The friendship between Sawako, Ayane, and Chiziru is everything to me! It’s so sweet and wholesome, and I love that they care so much for each other.
Kazehaya is the greenest of green flags. I love him so much.
Reading this is really nostalgic. I remember watching the anime and reading some of the volumes when I was in high school and loving it, so I’m super excited to read it again.
Omg this made me tear up. I love that it's not just focused on the romance, but also on friendship. This volume focuses a lot on Sawako's relationship with Yano and Yoshida and I loved it. I do want to get to more of the romance soon and also find out what the heck is up with this girl that's been introduced.
Probably my favorite volume in the series. I think 90% of the appeal of shojo for me is the friends the lead has and the romance isn't even on the radar. I always get a laugh out of Chizu's reactions. I also like to see how different translators do with like-love when used platonicly.
Volume 2 of Kimi ni Todoke is basically the start of Sawako’s emotional-intelligence ✨awakening arc✨ and I am HERE.FOR.IT
The plot starts to slowly take off from here, showing us how much a single act of kindness can change the entire trajectory of someone’s life
Sooo basically: the sweetest girl alive, who unfortunately scares everyone because she looks like Sadako from 'The Ring', finds herself entangled in some drama caused by certain rumors that targeted her close friends🤧
The scene where she was standing up for herself and the people she cares about was really heartwarming to read about - way to go Sawako!🥹
AHHHH-
Got to love me reading some highschool drama hehe✨
I'd give this a 4.9! I'd give it a point more if it had more moments with Kazehaya!! Though I absolutely love the focus and time spent on going through each girl's emotions and how it's affecting their friendship!!
Y’all I cried again… Sawako… My Shaila… The ending 😭😭😭😭❤️ Istg I’ve never cried bcs of a manga before, yet I’ve cried for both of these… (Ugly crying with my nose running and all) Maybe I’m dramatic..
I LOVE THIS MANGA SERIES SO MUCH OMG! IT'S SO CUTE! After I read Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You, Vol. 1, I bought the next 9 volumes of the series, and the anime, and the Japanese live action movie adaption. I can't wait for them to come and I can me surrounded in all things Kimi Ni Todoke!
The Plot: This manga is about a girl called Sawako Kuronuma and she has the looks that would be perfect for a ghost in a horror movie. Long black hair, pale skin and quiet. But everyone has her misunderstood. Sawako is really just a shy teenage girl who wants to make people happy. The popular boy in class, Kazehaya, has always been friendly towards her. He's the only one that makes an effort to say good morning or interact with her. Through his actions he classmates are given the opportunity to know to real Sawako.
The plot of this volume is about Sawako dealing with her new friends. She hasn't had friends before, and due to rumours in the school, she might end up losing what she has gained.
This volume brought tears to my eyes twice. I don't think I've ever connected to a manga character like I have with Sawako. It was such a cute volume, and I can't wait to collect and read the rest!
The Characters: This volume really builds on the characterisation of Sawako, and her friends Yoshida and Yano. Sawako has grown so much in the two volumes, and I'm so proud of her! I am liking the fact that the manga is focusing on friendships ahead of the romance. You can see that Sawako and Kazehaya like each other, but that's more of a subplot for now.
I love this manga series, and I urge anyone who loves cute romances to read it!
3.5/5 Volume 2 brings more drama to the table. Yes teenage girl drama. Worried about ruining her new friends reputation by being around them Sawako takes her social awkwardness even further and helps make a mess of things.
The story is still super sweet and sappy but that works for me as a nice feel good story. I enjoy the art and the characters quite a lot. Still not a particularly deep plot and I don’t really expect it to become one. I can see people not sticking with it because of that. But it works for me as a sweet palate cleanser.
The cover this time features new best friends Yano and Yoshida as well as our heroine Sawako. It’s super cute.
