The Grail Cycle #1

The Call of the Sea

Rate this book
Once, the world was ruled by those with magic in their blood.

But once was a long time ago …

Ever since magic was outlawed in Kernou, Jenyfer Astolat has been living with a secret that would see her bound to the stake as food for the sea. But when her reckless lies see her married to a man she does not love, Jenyfer has to forget fleeing town — and forget about Ordes Merlyni, the charming pirate who has been helping her wield magic in secret.

Arthur Tregarthen never wanted to be a leader, but it’s a duty he can’t escape as the son of the Chif. As he struggles to hide the truth of who he is from his formidable father, a chance meeting with a Magic Wielder reveals secrets from his past that even Arthur didn’t know.

When a Witchfinder tricks Jenyfer into revealing her magic, it sets off a chain of events that propel her, Arthur and Ordes into games that have been eons in the making. But now it falls to them to make decisions that will shape the fate of the world…

The Call of the Sea is the first book in The Grail Cycle, an epic romantic fantasy reimagining of the Arthurian legends.

Kate Schumacher writes epic fantasy with romance subplots, complex politics and vast, sprawling worlds filled with myth and magic and faeries. These are worlds you can get lost in, worlds where you will find fierce female characters who don't need saving, and men who support them. You will find flawed, reluctant heroes, Celtic myth, power-hungry villains, complicated alliances and a cast of relatable characters.

Kate's writing is influenced by history, sociology, philosophy and mythology, and by politics. She writes multiple point of view stories with individual plot lines that interweave at different points throughout the narrative. Kate never intends this either - her characters are just bossy and rude and all have things to say.

I'll probably get back to this review as soon as I catch up with all the reviews I still need to write, but considiering release day is very close, I decided to make this a priority and list all the things that made this ARC an absolute success.
First of all, the Arthurian legends+Mermaids+Pirates mix was so well done I could have read a thousand more pages of this story.
Schumacher's writing is simply exquisite; she knows how to build a scene and how to create the perfect setting and atmosphere.
I love the three main characters equally, and totally appreciated that each one had a distinctive voice and how their stories were tied to one another.
If I had to pick a favorite, though, I'd go with Arthur. I have a soft spot for soft boys.
Romance was impossibly cute.
Everyone and their grandma knows I need my books to have a heavy side of romance, and while both romances (beccause there are two! bless schumacher's heart) are chef's kiss-done, they're not very prominent.
Not a problem, really, because the story itself is interesting and entertaining enough as it is.
The only "problem" I had was with the pace at the beginning, that was unfortunately a little too slow for my tastes. Luckily, both the story and the pace picked up and I was able to enjoy my ARC properly.

Holy wow! This is the first book in a new trilogy from Aussie indie author Kate Schumacher, and it does not disappoint!

Jenyfer is fed up with small town life, especially when the Chif has converted most of the people to the faith of the One God, who subjugates women and blames them for sin. Jen has always felt the song of the Sea inside her, and when a pirate ship arrives nearby, things begin to happen.

Ordes is the son of the feared pirate captain Tymin, and also possesses fae magic. When their ship takes them to a small coastal town, he knows there is something important there.

Arthur is the son of the Chif, and he doesn't know how to escape the life his father has pushed him into, trying to clamp down any part of him that is different or in defiance of the One God, including his magic.

The story follows these three characters on their separate journeys that are somehow all linked. As things unfold, there are lots of "a-ha!" moments (or at least there was for me lol), as well as trying to guess where they are going next. The spice is delicious after a good build up of tension. I enjoyed the Gods and hope to see more of them in book 2, and I can't wait for more reveals!

Call of the Sea is a well paced adventure with all of the good things thrown in, and after that ending I am dying for more!

I think many people who found themselves picking up this book are like me. And what I mean by that is someone who had a big Camelot/King Arthur/Merlin period where they picked up every adaptation, retelling, fanfiction, etc. they could get their hands on. In fact, it's something we share in common with the author, according to the author's note at the beginning of the book.

In that author's note, Kate Schumacher speaks a lot of truth.

"Within this series, you will find Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere. You will find Merlin and the Lady of the Lake and Mordred. You will find Morgaine Le Fey. You will find the quest for the Grail, the Knights of the Round Table, and Camelot. But you may not recognise them at first glance."

Indeed. This is unmistakably a Camelot reimagining. But it's been turned on its head in such a way that it is both recognizable and surprising. The way these characters develop, come together, interact with each other, etc. is all very fascinating to watch. And I'm so curious to see how the story develops throughout the series, as I'm sure we're in for more than a few surprises.

And this isn't easily won praise either. The beginning of this book legitimately made me rather sick to my stomach. The legends of King Arthur and Camelot have always had a heavy prevalence of Christianity and oppression. It is something that makes absolute sense for the time period and context of the tale. But it is something that I found myself forgetting about, as many retellings tend to water it down. "The Call of the Sea" does no such thing. The fantasy rebrand of Christianity was very real, very present, and very cruel. I found myself thinking that Jen is far more patient and resilient than me. And that the author is very brave to write in such a transparent and condemning way on this topic. And I am craving for that final battle in the upcoming books.

But despite it all, I kept reading. I found myself absolutely NEEDING to know what happens next. I loved connecting the dots to the original legends, myths, and tales. I loved the way the author did away with that dreaded love triangle. I love the way we get queer rep, fantasy, and a focus on character discovery and development. These aspects thrilled me throughout the read, and even after as I found myself just having to gush about this read to someone.

You can bet that the sequel will be getting pre-ordered as soon as it becomes available.

Quotes:

“That morning, ten-year-old Arthur knew for certain the One God was not the God of beauty and strength, for what beauty was there in bloodshed and pain, and what true strength was there in a hand that flexed with violent darkness?”

“‘There are many different types of suffering. You know that already. Do not measure your own pain against that of others.’”

I'm sitting here, trying to write a review and find words to describe how much I loved this book. After reading Kate's other series, The Fires of Aileryan, I wasn't sure there would be a series like that one, but here we are. The Call of the Sea, book one in The Grail Cycle series, is pure perfection, simply put. I was completely captivated from the first page, unable to put it down until I reached the end. The characters, the world, the magic-everything was so vivid and real, it felt like I was living in the story. I can't wait to dive into the next book and continue this incredible journey.

Kate Schumacher's writing style is so poetic and magical without being overbearing; it truly does feel like a siren's song, pulling you in and letting you go. I love how we follow multiple POVs (Kate is a true master of that), giving us so much more depth and understanding of the characters, their thoughts, wants, motivations, and fears. This is an Arthurian retelling, but unlike any other I've read. The world-building is so solid and vast, as is the magic system, the beliefs, the myths - everything is woven in this perfect mixture gifted to us. There is female rage and a fight against oppression, a religion based on that same oppression, old myths and folklore carrying the truth of the world and nature, and mythical beings crucial to the story. And there is love, love, and devotion on various levels, each so precious. Having said all that, The Call of the Sea isn't just an Arthurian retelling, just a story about pirates, sirens, and prophecies; it is so much more. The Call of the Sea is a story about finding and accepting yourself and those around you, finding your place in the world, finding and keeping those who matter, a story about justice, magic, and love.

Off to book 2, sirens are calling <3

HO-LY SHIT

Give me a moment while I recover from that last chapter.

You know how sometimes you want to read a book, but nothing scratches your brain in quite the right way? This book was everything I wanted to read right now. It had romance, it had folklore, it had adventure and so much more!

Here's a rundown of all the tropes in this book
✅️Enemies to lovers
✅️Arthurian Mythology
✅️Multiple POV
✅️Adventures on the high seas
✅️Pirates
✅️Religious zealots
✅️Mermaids/syrens
✅️Spicy
✅️LGBTQI+ rep
✅️Magic
✅️Faeries
✅️ One bed

In this sprawling world we follow three characters: Jenyfer, Ordes and Arthur. We cycle through each of their POV's as we get to know them, the prophecy and their histories. The writing was really well done and even though I had a bit of trouble with the pacing at the beginning, I loved the way Kate has given a voice and personality to each of these MC's.

I would definitely class this as a romantasy, though the romance (including spice) isn't as prominent. The focus is way more on magic, the quest these characters are on and the world building. There's a M/M and F/M romance in here and combined with the mythology it just creates a really addictive read.

Now, you need to know this book ends on a cliffhanger and the most dramatic reveal ever (and I BLOODY LOVED IT). So get ready, because this book will work its way into your mind and heart like a syrens song and it won't let you go ;)

Many, many thanks to Kate Schumacher for giving me the opportunity to read this book before the publication date. Dear Kate, please know I'll be more than available for book 2 as well!

I started MerMay with a high seas adventure! The Call of the Sea was a beautifully written story that blended the myth of King Arthur with pirate lore and the atrocities of othering people. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the crew and am looking forward to the next book because HOW COULD YOU LEAVE ME LIKE THAT?!
If you like pirates, Arthurian lore, females helping other females, and unexpected heroes, give this atmospheric read a go.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice rating: 🌶🌶🌶 (open door, low detail)

I bloody loved this book! It's a beautifully chonky, slightly steamy, romantic fantasy full of pirates, syhrens, fae, magic, gods, and a prophecy. It's also an amazingly re-imagined Arthurian legend re-telling, but if you're not a fan of King Arthur stories don't fret, while there are elements of the legend (names of characters, the treasures etc.) it's completely unique, and I'm certain you'll still love it!

The Call of the Sea has 3 main characters and is told in 3 POVs, which I just adored. I connected almost instantly with Jenyfer, the FMC, but also loved the MMC POVs of Ordes and Arthur.

Want some #queerrep in your reading? Read this!! One of my favourite parts in this book is how one of the MMCs overcame his history of secrecy and discrimination to start to feel comfortable with his sexual orientation 👏👏👏.

While this book is thiiiiick, 500+ pages, I absolutely devoured it! It was so easy to read, with beautiful writing, and engaging world-building; this is a book that makes you feel like you're right there in it -- feeling sick to the stomach when religious zealots order a rape, sailing on the pirate ship 'The Excalibur' with salty sea spray on your skin, drinking in a crowded tavern with a syhren's song in your ears.

The plot was soooo good, with the perfect amount of information sprinkled throughout to keep me interested, and the perfect amount of plot twists to keep me guessing. I managed to figure out a few while reading, but be warned, this book ends on a cliffhanger you may not see coming.

I need the next book now (4 book series, anyone?!), but in the meantime, I guess I'll just have to order the book box so I can have a gorgeous trophy for my shelf!

💢 TW: violence & battle scenes, death, religious persecution, religious discrimination against LGB+, self-flagellation (off-page), rape (brief scene), consensual sexual scenes (M/M & F/M)

☆I recieved an ARC of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own honest opinions.☆

Picked this up as part of an offer on the author's books, and to my surprise, I find this is a far more enjoyable read than I expected going in. It wasn't perfect, but it's a new twist on Arthurian myth, with a nautical slant perfect for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean (or if like me, you're trying to fill the nautical fantasy gap left by the end of the Kingdom Isles series)...

Jenyfer Astalot is your classic independent fantasy heroine, stymied by living in a village in the thrall of misogynistic, mindless fanaticism. When using magic to save the life of her sister puts her own in danger, she is sprung from captivity and swept off into a world of pirates, enchanted ships, fey sea creatures and ancient magics as she becomes part of a quest to recover ancient treasures that could heal the decline of their world...

Jenyfer is a compelling heroine as she struggles with her magical heritage & her growing attraction to the mage Ordes (their romance was particularly well written), and he's a compelling character too. The story's take on Arthur is also a great subplot as he struggles with his own identity and his clear sense of right and wrong against the fanatical tyranny of his father (Ulrian is a vile creature who I cannot wait to see get his and Jenyfer is stronger than me for not cracking her sister's skull open every time Lamorna blathers on about the One God... Her and Bryn are probably going to be problems in future books, I'll wager...)

Overall, a good start to this series and definitely intriguing enough to make me want to read the next one in the series (and check out more of Kate Schumacher's writing in the meantime). Fans of Merlin, the Witcher, the Kingdom Isles and Pirates of the Caribbean should definitely consider this book!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of 'The Call of the Sea' in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful! This was a superb read, and although it's a big book, I flew through it, every page kept me hooked.
We are introduced to Jenyfer, a magic wielder who has been forced to hide her power all her life in fear of the Chif of the town and the One God. She goes on an epic quest alongside a pirate called Ordes on a magical ship, The Excalibur, and along the way, discovers who she is and what she can do. The world-building was incredibly detailed, I was truly sucked into Jenyfer's life and I loved the slow-burn romance. It took a while to get there, but it gets there!
This is an original take on old Arthurian legends, characters you know and love are there, but they're hidden, and I did really feel the author's love for the old tales. There was a touch of Cornish folklore in here too, which I loved. Having grown up holidaying in that area and visiting Tintagel many times, it was fun to spot all the Easter eggs and hidden meanings. Along with Arthurian legends, you have Fae, sirens, and many other magical creatures. It was so much fun, and the end left me grinning! Really looking forward to the next installment.

This book felt like a dream. I've always been a fan of the stories of Camelot and Merlin and King Arthur, so as soon as I heard about The Call Of The Sea I knew I needed to read it.
The worldbuilding in this book was spot on. The author manages to create a world that I could see, hear, smell and feel the whole way through. There are multiple different plot locations throughout and it ran the risk of being too much description but somehow Kate has managed to keep it on just the right side of the line.
This is the first book in a series, and as such the plot is quite slow moving, and I felt that this book put more emphasis on character development and backstory, which I think has paid off fabulously - I absolutely love and adore and empathise with all of the main characters and I have a real understanding of why they act the way they do. Despite being heavily character focused, this book has plenty of action and the plot is set up really well and I'm super excited to see where it continues.
The romance element was really subtle, but when it happened, IT HAPPENED. There are two "couples" that we watch develop and overcome throughout the book and both have such charm and uniqueness that I absolutely loved.
There are some tough elements of this book - particularly a non-consensual sexual interaction, as well as domestic violence and discrimination. The author managed this really well and at no point did it feel too graphic or too much, but definitely be aware of this before "diving" in. (I had to get a mermaid/sea themed pun in before the end)

On the whole this was just a super enjoyable, comforting, and well rounded book that sets up for an exciting series I can't wait to carry on with!

This book is a re imagined ,totally different take on the Arthurian legend. It has Mermaids, Sirens, pirates , Fae , magick weilders, God's/ Godesses and prophecy.

It is so rich in its world building and character driven.
Each character is so well developed. Especially the MFC Jenyfer and MMC Ordes who is my new book BF! Also my heart went out to Arthur.

There are alot of complex characters and I felt like i got to know them all. I absolutely loved Katarin Le Fey , captain of the Night Queen and Temyris , captain of the Excalibur was a force to be reckoned with.
Jens development is brilliant, she is strong and I admire her .

The love stories with Jen and Ordes, Arthur and Jalen are just beautifully done. There is a level of spice but so tasteful, it didn't ruin the story. Also there is such great LGBTQ rep !

It raised some serious issues that occur today still in the name of religion, that still happen to women.

ARC REVIEW
This one has taken me a lot of consideration to write.
I really wanted to love it, there were many parts that I really enjoyed and it was well-written. The mythology and magical system were very intriguing and definitely the strongest part of the book. I loved the concept of an Arthurian reimagining x pirates.
The writing was good, however I found it to be very descriptive, and for someone who loses focus easily this almost lost me. I really struggled to make connections with the characters, to me they just seemed to be lacking something.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about it. There are lots of positives and many parts which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I also felt some parts lacking as well.

Such a great reimagining of Arthurian legend!

Ngl, I struggled at the beginning bc religious zealots really get my blood boiling but boy did it provide a good base for the story to kick off.

Apart from that, I'm officially in my pirate era. Katarin Le Fay was an outstanding character (so badass) and I can't wait to see where she fits among all the main characters. Shout out to Arthur and Jalen my new favourite couple.

If you're after some great adventure set at sea well... The Call of the Sea is where it's at.

I've always been a sucker for Arthurian legend and this book is no exception. I really enjoyed this book with its fantasy and mythology with a touch of the real world thrown in (think religion and essentially witch hunts).
I did not see the very end twist coming and I'm very glad to have a copy of book two ready to go so that I can keep going and find out what happens next.

Re-read: 4.25 stars

On re-read, I did find some of this a bit eye-rolling, cringe or tropey. Especially Jen and Ordes. And sometimes the writing felt jarring.

That being said, I still really enjoyed my reread and I'm excited to get into the arc for book two.

The characters are incredibly well-written and I can see what the author is doing with them. I wanted more Arthur as his chapters felt few and far between at times or were too short. His relationship with Jalen felt very carnal and, my main thought, as with the other characters was "why's everyone so horny when they're having a conversation?" It felt somewhat out of place.
The plot was a slow start as we spent a lot of time in Kernou. But once this gets going, it gets going. This is very much a setting up the series book, and it's quite the start of a series.

I'm looking forward to continuing it!

First read: five stars

NO WORDS JUST AHHHHHHH!

Seriously. This is so well-written, the characters are incredible and I am absolutely going to have a book hangover after this!

I will come back and write a more coherent and detailed review later on.

EDIT: Alright, my detailed and coherent review (forewarning this is like 99% gushing, 1% review)

I wanna start off by saying that Kate has written and re-created the Arthurian/Avalonian mythology in such an incredible, intricate and spectacular way that I am just in AWE! From start to finish, this book had me enthralled and it was extremely difficult to put it down or do anything else without thinking about it!

CHARACTERS

I. LOVE. THEM. YOUR. HONOUR!

(MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!)

Here's a list of thoughts on the characters:

• Jalen knowing who Arthur really is and loving him for it, even though Arthur doesn’t know who he is. *SOBBING* They better be end-game because AHHHH!
• Jenyfer’s oppression, assault, healing and sexual liberation was a cathartic and emotional journey to see. It was portrayed really well and I *emotional blabbering*
• That part where Jenyfer makes a guy stab himself and she LIKED IT because FEMALE RAGE!
• Arthur and Jalen. JARTHUR!!! Unlikely chosen one who’s confused and then there’s the mighty demi-god who loves and believes in him I CANNOT AHJDHAGDHDGD
• The fact Ordes was in love with Jenyfer before she was in love with him while she’s just *chilling* in her own chaos and being a total disaster? is a vibe. She just needs a hug.
• Speaking of Ordes, I just- He’s amazing. I love him.
• Katarin is my role model and I aspire to be that hot and deadly. Also if she is giving lesbian-with-a-sword energy and I am here for it.

WORLD BUILDING

Immaculate. Incredible. Amazing. Just *chefs kiss* Everything was explained really well and was well-balanced. No complaints. I loved the magical ships the most! Can I join the crew?!

I wanna go to Avalon. The way Kate describes and explains it is STUNNING! I literally felt so peaceful and relaxed just reading about it. So jealous of Arthur when he went there...

PLOT

Amazing plot, amazing storytelling, amazing amazing amazing! I did see that plot twist at the end coming as Kate expertly weaved a clue in at the start...

Um, I am scared and worried for Lamorna. I hope she kills him <3

OVERALL

Obviously my favourite aspect of this was Jarthur and I really wanted more of Arthur's pov in this book, however I have been told we'll get more of his pov and time with Jalen in book two!

The queer representation was done really well in this. I can't wait to see Arthur's character growth.

Just everything about this was so expertly crafted and written and I just- Kate what have you done? I shall NEVER be the same so excuse me while I just turn into a puddle and SOB!

This is genuinely such a fantastic release.

This book quite literally has everything. It has the fey, mermaids, sirens, pirates, magic, prophecy, romance, multiple points of view, LGBTQIA+ representation, and Arthurian legend with a unique spin. It even has a gorgeous map and pronunciation guide!

Yes, it is a lot, and yet somehow it works! Instead of making the book overly complex and confusing, everything was expertly woven into the story. There were enough plot points, characters, and points of view to keep me interested and engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The story is unique with some fun twists.

The writing is quite descriptive and beautiful. The descriptions of the scenery really pulled me further into the story and painted vivid pictures in my mind. That being said, at times the descriptions did feel overdone and drawn out which would pull me out of the story.

This is a slow burn romance and let me tell you: the tension is SUPERB. I love how the main relationship in this book is realistic. They're not all over each other from the moment their eyes meet. I thoroughly enjoyed the tension between these two and quite frankly enjoyed the early scenes more than the spicier ones. There IS spice in this but it is not to the point where the spice takes over the plot (so if you're not a huge fan of spice, this book is still for you!).

My only criticism is that the female main character felt as if she had not been completely fleshed out. While I did enjoy the fact that she was relatable (strong yet not invincible, has her weaknesses and past experiences to overcome, and does not melt into the arms of the first man she sees), she often came across as overly emotional and irrational. While I don't dislike characters who possess these traits, it felt inconsistent and unexplained. She would anger without apparent reason (or later explanation/self reflection) and would often make overly stupid decisions. I got the impression that many of the rash decisions she made were simply for the sake of furthering the plot. Could I have overlooked an obvious explanation because I loved this book so much that I plowed through it? Absolutely. Am I going to reread it to see if this opinion changes? Yes. But for the sake of being honest this was my consistent impression throughout the entirety of the book.

Is this book perfect? Just about. Was it good enough to keep me interested to the end, order myself a signed hardcover copy, and pay ridiculous prices to ship it to my country of residence? Yes. Absolutely. I 100% recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out.

If you are on the fence about shelling out the money for this massive 500+ page, unique, fleshed out, epic fantasy novel, do yourself a favor and grab yourself a copy. It is abundantly clear that a lot of thought, hard work, and love went into this book and it is certainly a worthwhile read. It has been days since I have finished it and it is literally all I can think about. I cannot wait to reread it!

This book is a hidden gem!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

King Arthur plus Mermaids and Pirates?? SIGN ME UP

Jenyfer is living in a town where the old magic has been outlawed. Just being who she is would have her sacrificed to the sea. When a pirate comes to shore Jenyfer finds in him a friend and confident who can help her with her secret. But she is caught one night, and the consequences set in motion a path she never would have imagined!
The Characters
Jenyfer – is bright and fierce. This is her self-discovery journey, and her love for her sister was refreshing.
Ordes – is calm, and mostly rational and has his own lineage to discover.
Arthur – is searching for a place to belong. If I had to guess, he is going to have to create it for all of them!
Would I reread? Yes! I love a good King Arthur legend!
Would I recommend? I would recommend this book to fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, and anyone interested in Arthurian Legends & retellings!

This book has:
Strong Female Characters
Slow burn romance & Spice
Ill fated love or fated mates… Idk yet!
LGBTQ+ rep
Magic

- Arthurian Legend
- Celtic mythology
- criticises some parts of religion (I myself am religious and in my opinion, everything that's criticised here is legitimate)

'It is no G-d of mine that takes away my voice and my freedom,' Jenyfer whispered.

And if you're still not convinced, here are a few tropes I loved:
- star-crossed lovers
- slow-burn
- forced proximity
- he falls first
- found family
- I'll burn down the world for you
- who did this to you?

This book touches on some pretty heavy topics, so be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading.

It's been a while since I read such an amazing book and I simply cannot wait to read the second one, especially after that ending.

Wow what a ride. An Arthurian legend with a twist that centres around strong spirited women, creatures of legend and myth plus dashing men.

Magic is outlawed and users are hunted. Enter our heroine, Jenyfer. She is trying to hide her abilities whilst being true to herself without persecution. However, the call of the sea cannot be ignored.

Jenyfer meets another magic user Ordes, our reluctant hero. Plans to flee are made, however Jenyfer is betrayed by one she trusts the most. With heart rendering consequences.

After escaping her confines, Jenyfer proceeds on an adventurous journey. Thwart with challenges, Jenyfer seeks her destiny with the help of unexpected allies and a new love interest.

Arthur (also from Jenyfer’s home town), does not want to follow the path laid before him by his cruel and vicious father. Whilst currently on seperate adventures, Jenyfer Ordes and Arthur are unknowingly linked by fate. Where will their journeys lead?

I’m excited to see where this series will take the characters and how the slow burn love interest will progress. Bring on book two.

I have provided this honest review after being given the opportunity to be an on ARC team. Thank you kate.schumacher.writer

Incredible world building and unique magic. This book captured me from the outset. Multiple POV’s; LGBT rep; swashbuckling pirates; intrepid adventures; mysterious magic; uncovered secrets; sexy demigods; fierce, sassy, independent women; and rebellion from the mind games and control of a religious cult. This story takes you for a ride and leaves you wanting more! Can’t wait for the next instalment of the Grail Cycle!

Holy wow! This is the first book in a new trilogy from Aussie indie author Kate Schumacher, and it gives us everything!

Jenyfer has spent her life feeling like an outsider, especially when the Chif has converted most of the people to the faith of the One God, who subjugates women and blames them for sin. Jen has always felt the song of the sea inside her, and when a pirate ship arrives in the bay, she feels things begin to change.

Ordes is the half-faerie son of the feared pirate captain Tymis. When their magic ship Excalibur takes them to a small coastal town, he knows there is something important there.

Arthur is the son of the Chif, and he doesn't know how to escape the life his father has pushed him into, trying to clamp down any part of him that is different or in defiance of the One God, including his magic, and his bond with a young fisherman.

The story follows these three characters on their separate journeys that are nevertheless all linked. As things unfold, there are lots of "a-ha!" moments (or at least there was for me lol) as you link things to Arthurian legend, as well as trying to guess where they are going next. I like that some parts are on the nose, like Arthur and Excalibur, and others are there to find if you know the lore well, and are revealed later. The side characters such as Tymis and Katarin provide much of the lore and world building in a way that doesn't feel like an infodump, which is great, and I know they will have much bigger parts to play moving forward as well. The spice is delicious after a good build up of tension. Ordes is such a gentleman. The bar really is low because he does the bare minimum that any man SHOULD do in regards to respecting women, but as with any good hero, he makes it seem chivalrous and lovely. Also fully ship Arthur and Jaren, omg. I enjoyed the glimpses of the old gods and hope to see more of them in book 2, and I can't wait for more reveals, especially after that ending!

Call of the Sea is a well paced NA fantasy romance adventure with all of the good things thrown in. Fantastic for fans of Arthurian legend as well as those who know nothing!

The Call of the Sea is such a beautifully written book. It's romantic, it's atmospheric, it's familiar and at the same time so completely unique.

The author has taken Arthurian legend and given us a spin on it with pirates, sirens, mermaids, magic, and LGBTQ+ rep. This story is full of romance, high-sea adventures, magical ships and amazing character development. It's one of the best, if not THE best, books I've read all year.

Jenyfer lives in a small fishing town on the coast, and the descriptions of the village and the smells of the ocean were so vivid, I swear I could feel the ocean spray on my skin and taste the salt in the air.

"𝙅𝙚𝙣𝙮𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖. 𝙉𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙝𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙣."

We follow three main characters in the story- Jenyfer, a woman who's drawn to the sea and the song always singing in her head and in her blood; Ordes, a charismatic, handsome and dashing pirate who is helping Jenyfer with her magic in secret; and Arthur, the son of the town's religious zealot Chif, who is hiding a secret of his own in his forbidden romance with Jalen, a magic-wielding fisherman. As events unfold in their coastal town and the war of religion begins to reach it's peak, these three are thrust into an adventure that seems fated by the gods and goddesses.

"𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙜𝙤𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙢𝙮 𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢."

I can't express how much this story touched me. I loved every single word written in this book. It felt so magical and gave me such amazing epic fantasy feelings. It's been a long time since I was so fully immersed in a world and I felt like I didn't want to ever come out of it. The story has some fun twists and turns and an amazing cliffhanger of an ending which has me waiting not-so-patiently for the next installment.

I received a free ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

So, this book has all the elements I love. Arthurian legend elements? Check. Pirate shenanigans? Check. Hidden magic? Check. Characters with spirit, spunk and heart? Double check.

Yet, for some reason, I didn’t find myself getting as into the story as I should have. I truly don’t know why. The writing is beautiful, the characters are well fledged out and the relationships are gorgeous. I especially enjoyed anytime Arthur was on the page.

I wonder if it’s the main character? But that doesn’t make sense either because, like I said, all the characters have all the elements I usually adore!

So, I absolutely recommend this book on skill alone. I will likely revisit it in the future and just see if I wasn’t in the right headspace to be sucked in.

EDIT: Realized I started and finished this book right as my dog became sick (she passed last week). Pretty sure that’s what was affecting my immersion. Will definitely reread later and update my rating if needed

This book had such a refreshing take on Arthurian legends. The plot was slower than what I normally like, so it felt a little long in some areas. I feel like after the major event, which was about halfway of the book, the plot was pretty stagnant/filler. But the faster plot is more about my preference than the book.

The world building, including the lore, was well thought out. The gods and myths were really blended just right for it to feel Arthurian and mermaid-y. The characters also have great backstories! And that ending....

Arthurian retelling
Gods, faeries, and mermaids
Quest and destiny
Slow burn
LGBTQ+ rep
Third person, multiple POV

Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Triggers include: Discrimination, sexual assault, violence, religious zealots

3.5✨

I'd also like to express gratitude to the author for sending me this ARC.

Pirates, witches, magic and Arthurian Legend.
Kate does such a good job combining them all into this story. There is strangers to lovers, one bed and forced proximity tropes which I love and there is so many unanswered questions that I just have to know.

The world that the FMC Jenyfer lives in has been taken over by a new religion that subjugates women and especially those with magic. This part was so rage inducing to read not because of Kates writing but because she captured so well how easy it is for our world to slip into this way of thinking. Gives very handmaids tale vibes and as a women makes you think about our own society and the things women are subjected to. When Kate meets Ordes he helps her with her magic but then she is tricked and forced into a terrible situation but one many women encounter around the world. The conflict of her wanting to know more about her magic her being tricked into revealing herself and trying to keep Ordes at arms length keeps tension high. Add in a prophecy, unknowns and revelations this is a great book.

Check trigger warnings before proceeding.

There is FM and MM romance mild spice.

The twists and turns are good and leave me wanting more for book two especially Lamorna and her story :)

Arthurian legend reimagined...

I had a feeling I was going to enjoy this book, and I was NOT disappointed! Although the start felt a teensy bit slow to me, I was soon sucked into Jenyfer's struggles. I really loved her as a MC: strong yet vulnerable, passionate and flawed, aching for a taste of real freedom. Arthur sure climbed into my heart as well, and I hope we get to see more of him in book 2.

Magic and religion created a thrillingly tense conflict throughout the story. Add in pirates, fey-creatures and gods, and we got a very unique retelling. What also made an impression on me was how dynamic some of the key secondary characters are, Lamorna in particular. If you're looking for a new take on an old myth, definitely check this book out!!

A massive thank you goes to indie author Kate Schumacher Fantasy Author for letting me read an e-ARC of The Call of the Sea! This epic romantic fantasy is book one in The Grail Cycle, taking a deep dive into Arthurian legend even as it’s reimagined for us romantasy lovers. How could anyone go past that?!

I’m a big fan of Arthurian legends, so it’s no surprise I’ve been desperate to dive into The Call of the Sea! But this epic romantic fantasy completely blew my pre-conceptions out of the water (much like a certain pirate ship can take down its enemies). Kate doesn’t just deliver a retelling, she embraces the imperfections within the legend and masterfully reworks them into something that absolutely glistens... It's a story of reluctant, uncertain heroes. But it’s also a love letter to the power of nature, particularly the capriciousness of the sea.

No pressure or anything, but it’s now my favourite Arthurian tale!
